Hi Jay, I just discovered your channel last night (Saturday, November 9, 2024). I'm trying to get started in voice-over and am struggling with how to process my voice. I discovered your channel while I was looking for more technical information on equalization and specifically how to use the parametric equalizer properly and effectively. Hi Jay, Very much enjoying your videos! I’m trying to figure out whether I can do my own audiobook (as the author of said book), so I’m learning a lot from these feedback videos and want to thank you for sharing your expertise. Also, loved what you said about the pauses. It makes it so atmospheric. I’m curious to know more about when you’d use that sort of stillness and when things should maybe speed up. For sure it would depend on the scene, but how do you as an artist decide? And does that differ when you’re reading something in 3rd person vs when you’re reading in 1st person? Also would love to join a discord if one becomes available 😊
Glad to have you here! Congrats on the book!! Discord is linked above ;) Regarding pauses/speeding up, I wouldn’t say either would be affected by POV (3rd vs 1st). As far as how I decide, it’s somewhat dictated by the text and how one wants to treat it. One way to imagine it is the author writes it a certain way, and the audiobook narrator is adapting the book into another medium like a film director. So it’s kind of a combination of listening to the story and taking cues from my own emotional reactions to the story as I go. I sense I’m getting a bit esoteric, but does that kinda make sense? Let me know.

Much respect for your approach and content, Thank You! Did Jenny provide you audio of her "normal" speaking voice? While listening, occurred to me there are people who have been afflicted with situations that cause them to speak in such fashion. (Just thinking out loud to myself here) and I could be totally out in left field. Apologies if so. Keep up the awesome job!
No she didn’t, but she did say she was using a deep gravelly voice so I inferred it was an aesthetic choice for the material. Excellent point regardless!

A bit of both. Gut counts for a lot, but experience/training helps to guide and sculpt instincts with intention.
