This channel is about refitting an old (1974) Swedish 36ft sailboat, an OE36 designed by Olle Enderlein. And also about our lovely Shipman 28 sailing the Baltic Sea.

Sorry for the delay with this episode. Here I show you how I made some plywood panels to separate Quarter berth from engine bay, also complete redone the quarter berth. I also paint a cockpit locker inside and make a recessed box for the engine control panel. The HDPE fuel tank gets pressure tested, too.

We sailed to island of Gotland in Sweden on our Shipman 28 Viktoria in 2022. This is part 3 of the series. We leave Visby behind and sail to Fårösund. We visit the small island of Fårö and someone stole our bike. Or borrowed it? In the end we sail back home passing a grounded multihull sailboat.

In this episode I have to remove cabin sole and main bulkhead from my OE36 sailboat. And all deck hardware etc etc... But good news is that I receive my brand new HDPE diesel tank! Although there is more to disassemble I promise you, this is the final episode focused on breaking the boat apart. The future ones will be more about building and reassembling it.

I want to give you a hint about batteries, when and if needed. Have tested LifePo4 and been disappointed with the sheap none bluetooth batteries. Hear you mention dc-dc so I suppouse you will put also lead as start battery, which works fine. Buy only Victron smart chargers anď LifePo4 with bluetooth.

Run away from buying a boat like this. Don't just walk away, run! Even if it was for free, don't take it. The amount of work, time and money that it will need is enormous. Whatever work that you think it needs, multiply that by 10. The same goes for the time and money that you think it will take. You could literally spend years fixing a boat like this up, and still not be finished. Please do yourself a favor, and buy a boat that doesn't need anything except minor repairs and is ready to sail. You will save time, money, aggravation and frustration. The only reason to buy a boat like this is if you are a masochist. LOL (but also seriously).
I think you should tell us the name of the original builder (not the designer) so we will all be sure not ever to buy one of their boats. Name and shame!.
I din't understand : how the keel could drop off if it is supported as you did by the heavy woo blocks you built under it and on its sides. Basically you are lifting the hull (the boat) with the small wedges you inserted. If you supported the hull by a stong wooden structure and letting the keel hanging, it would have dropped off as soon as you removed the bolts . What you are doing is lifting the hull off instead of letting the keel trop off. I'm not saying this out my imagination because 28 years ago I did exactly that on my boat with a keel which had approximately the same shape, with the same hull. What a friend and I did was supporting the boat as strongly as possible on its sides by beams and two strong transversal boards under the hull that took its shape. slammed in bid wedges made of strong wood, the keel fell, welifted it to clean it and sand blast it, we cleaned the under structure that was hidden by the keel, did some minor woodwork in place with water ingress and rot, cleaned the bolt holes after removing the the latter, changed a couple of bolts with new 25mm stainless rods, hardest part was to find someone who had a lathe to make the screws on both sides of the new rods, let dry then refitted the keel with a massive silicone layer, let the putty get tacky in order that it would be squished out by the weight of the hull, brought back the keel under at the same exact old position, screwed the rods/bolts back as much as we could due to the fact the the keel was quite low, then lifted the keel (the process took a whole day because we're talking of a 700Kg of cast iron and it was basically a game of trial and error to have everything perfectly aligned), squeezed veery slow curing epoxy resin in the holes while lifting it, then bolted the the rods and … "et voilà". Took us two weeks. I don remember this well because I took a leave of two weeks to do the job and the last bolt was tighten two hours before my train left the station for Paris !… It's not a difficult job. Nut doing it alone must be a real pain in the but … especially when you have to run and climb inside and out to fix the keel back. Good luck!

As someone who loves projects but has back problems I have an appreciation for your methods of using straps and leverage to your advantage.
This might seem like a silly question but what would you say the largest waves you would sail in with a shipman 28
I have experienced more than 2m high waves during the Baltic Sea crossings to Aland and Finland (according to weather buoys) during last years. The boat handled them well. Much more important is the interval of the waves and the nature of waves, are they breaking etc...

Did you use the white Q-Cell powder to thiken the epoxy for glueing and filletting?
I bought the thickener from a local industrial supplier, they called it "microspheres". They are very small hollow glass beads indeed although they feel like powder.
I was wondering, does your shipman 28 have hydraulic propulsion. The shipman i have does and i want to convert it back to shaft drive.
Now, she came with Yanmar 8hp engine and shaft drive from the factory

Hey, I remember seeing this when you first published the video and being appalled by the misalignment of the mast step. Now that I am myself going about refitting a small sailboat I found something similar and was shocked at first… but since I don’t have a laser I took to other measures, literally. I found out that the boat is not exactly symmetrical which isn’t surprising since it has been laminated by hand in the 70’s. So I checked the first that it was misaligned with the keelbolts and the rudderstock and the bow and started to feel bad. Then I realized that the boat must be looked at from outside too. So I set up some reference points and looked at it from stern to bow through the referenced centerline from tiller to center of hatch to mast hole thru a track that is in the centre of the deck on this boat and to the bow. Lo and behold it was all quite neatly aligned, although if I focussed on it from inside it was not. I don’t know what this means per se, I am relieved I found alignment somehow and can go on without moving the maststep. Remember to check thoroughly how you put it back because the hole in the cabin top might just be right where the mast step was on your boat earlier. Obviously the job was good to get redone in yours and you did a brilliant job so far. I’d be happy to talk more about boat refitting if I’m ever in Estonia. Terveisiä Suomesta ;)
Note: my Maststep is right on top oh the keel between two keelbolts, just a centimeter on center which bugged me a while
A bit late now , but the red plastic plug you found , looks to be , what i know as a raw plug . Interesting place you found it , because i'm at a loss as to why it was used on a sail boat . Its normal use is for mounting a surface box to a brick or block wall . You simply drill a hole , slip the plug in , usually with the help of a hammer , then screw the box to the wall . The plug forms a bond between the brick , and screw , holding the box securely to the wall . What its doing on a boat , is beyond me . Maybe it was used as a holding for some component , i really don't know . But the filler could have been some kind of anchor for the plug . Anyway , just thought i'd drop that information in for you .
That's exactly that it was. But why, remains a mystery. There are many better ways to attach something to the hull.

The glass work like all the rest is looking great, are you wet layering and then vacuuming bagging it all?
The mast base was laid dry. Then the bag was built around the dry layers of fabric. Epoxy resin was sucked into the fabric by the vacuum pump.
You have to feel real positive after this work. Good to see some additions.

I believe, if I recall, that when you put a hand plane of a flat surface, rather than resting it in the blade, rest it on the side cheek so the blade is not impacted.

It looks great, your work. The most western lighthouse is close to Cach Cais. I visited that place in 1967. (some years ago)
