The air compressor on my Prevost was very clearly original, and it was passing oil. I also was noticing issues that I believed had to do with needing to replace the governor. In this video I go over replacing the air compressor.

    Hello Ted, Great video and thanks for sharing. If you don't mind me asking where did you placed the light wiring plug and the brakeaway cable on your bumper. If you can share some pictures it will be much appreciated. Thanks again for sharing.

      @TedsGarage 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      On my setup the breakaway cable comes from the brake controller (a Brake Buddy that sits in the footwell of the driver's seat) and then runs a wire with an actuator up. I actually run that the whole way up to the hitch on the bus side and connect it with a carabiner. I don't have a light plug either, I have wireless trailer lights that I put on either side of the Jeep's bed and those work well.

      I'd have no issues driving this on the street, especially with the right brake pads. I have Hawk pads on that car. Pedal pressure may be slightly higher, but still perfectly manageable.

    I see your fan is removed and there are electric fans, do you have a problem over heating on steep grades?

    • @TedsGarage
      @TedsGarage 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I have several videos on the electric fan setup, including a report on how well it worked for me. I've since sold that RV, but I put a good number of miles on the setup in winter and summer. That RV always required that I pay attention to coolant temps on grades, and isn't like my Prevost that seems immune to temperature rises. I did have to do a few tweaks to the system, and there are a few things I'd do differently if I did it again (or may have changed if I kept the bus longer), but overall, I found that any cooling limitations were generally not worse, and I did some steep climbs out west towing a heavy trailer in the summer. I was in the right lane and going slow, but still accomplished them. Check out the videos I made on the fans, I've got some good info in them.

    when my water heater is on it builds too much pressure in the lines. The water comes out in bursts at first when the faucets are opened. Would this resolve that?

    • @TedsGarage
      @TedsGarage 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      This could potentially solve your issue. For just general pressure buildup and release, this will help to stabilize those since it essentially expands some with pressure, whereas in a normal RV system you have no area that can expand. However bursts I more often associate with air in the system, which makes me wonder if you've got the air fully bled out. Either way, this is a pretty cheap upgrade to do and should make an improvement in overall water system performance so long as you've got the pressure in the tank set appropriately.

    I have the same problem with my ‘99 XL, oil in the compressed air. My air dryer is always heavy with oil and I change it yearly. After your video I’ll be changing my compressor right away. Prevost has a rebuilt compressor for $850 with core exchange. My question is , how do you clean all the exiting line of oil? Can that oil damage something if left in the lines? Thanks so much for your videos and Merry Christmas!

    • @TedsGarage
      @TedsGarage 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I didn't bother trying to clean the line out of oil. The air dryer ends up being a filter for it anyway, and in my case the contamination was small enough that I expected that the dryer/filter would absorb it naturally fairly quickly. If you wanted to try to clean it out, I would try disconnecting it at the dryer and blowing it out with compressed air.

    Thank you for making these videos. Very useful for those of us trying to understand how these complex machines work. Any idea what the expected life span is of that air compressor? mileage or age?

    • @TedsGarage
      @TedsGarage 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I honestly have no idea what is considered typical life on these. Probably the bigger thing is that when you see signs of it going out (either oil in the wet tank or blowby from the crankcase) it's worth replacing. I have seen a lot of reports of people saying their rebuilt air compressors haven't lasted very long if they go with cheap units. So to me, the big takeaway is buy a quality unit. That's part of why I decided to buy mine from Prevost, it was an OEM rebuild and not a no-name, so hopefully it should last longer.

  • @jspolsky
    @jspolsky 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I have a 2002 XL2 with low mileage so I am pretty sure it's the original compressor. It has a symptom where sometimes when you start it up, none of the tanks air up at all. My mechanic told me to pump the brake a few times when this happens, and indeed, after I do that, the tanks start filling up. I don't really understand that at all. How do you detect that the air compressor is passing oil? Sorry if this is a basic question :)

    • @TedsGarage
      @TedsGarage 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@jspolsky if you have oil coming out of the wet tank like I showed in this video, that’s a good indication. Pumping the brakes will help to unstick any valves that may be preventing the tanks from filling.

    Great video Ted. I have the same problem with my 12.7 Series 60 on my 2002 MCI. We took a 4700 mile trip around the country and when I popped the air drain, a bunch of nasty oily crud came out. Also, I seem to have developed some blowby that I heard can come from either the piston rings, the turbo or the air compressor. I'm hoping that it's the compressor so when I change it, I will kill two birds. I'm not usually that lucky though, and I really don't know how the compressor can cause blowby. Otherwise, the compressor works great, but it does look like the original unit which would have about 475k miles on it. I also appreciate the comments from your audience. They are helpful too.

    • @TedsGarage
      @TedsGarage 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Definitely sounds like you should start off by replacing the air compressor. The way it produces blow-by is when the rings in the compressor itself are leaking air past them. The air compressor's crankcase actually connects to the rest of the engine's crankcase. Remember that it's oil-fed, and that is engine oil that has to drain back into the crankcase for the engine. Good luck. It's not a fun job, but hopefully you'll only have to do it once.

      Now that I've been into this video and looking at some others, I am ready to order my compressor. If you don't mind, I have another question. That first smaller hose that you removed with the coolant in it... that hose doesn't appear to connect to the actual compressor, as it appears to connect to the block at the top and then it runs down below the compressor someplace. Did you remove it only because it's in the way, or (?), I'm having a hard time figuring out which hoses related to the compressor are coolant. The short one at the rear with the squeeze clamp is pretty obvious. The other hose at the rear looks to be the air supply hose (the one with the 2-bolt flange). So I am having a hard time figuring out where or which hose is the 2nd coolant hose. I'll do some more looking obviously. Maybe it doesn't matter, as I plan to drain the system so I can avoid the "spray". Thanks Ted!

    • @TedsGarage
      @TedsGarage 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@glennman9890 That first hose I removed was connected to the head on the compressor. That's the coolant supply, and the hose with the clamp on the back is the coolant return. You're also correct about the hose that's the air supply with the 2-bolt flange. Good luck!

    me and a friend did this on my 2000 Prevost XL last year and since we knew we were getting rid of the 12v DN50 for good we removed the big alternator and the bracket which opened up a lot of room. We also partially drained the coolant from the block to a point below the coolant lines. To aide in getting the new air compressor positioned we welded a heavy eye bolt onto a plug that fit one of the threaded inlets on top of the compressor head. Then we used an engine hoist to lift the compressor into position. Having the alternator and bracket removed made this doable and made the repositioning of the compressor much much easier. On an XL this worked great, not sure you would the needed clearance on an XL2. We also removed the crank position sensor beforehand, replacing both sensors and then threading the wire back down after the compressor was reinstalled. We then installed the factory alternator bracket for the big DN50 but installed a much smaller air cooled Bosch with a custom bracket my buddy made that mates to the big heavy Detroit bracket. Removing the DN50 made sense for me since I have a 12v house system on the bus and don't try to run the rooftop airs with the inverters. The 12v DN50 is a liability in my opinion.

      @@gruponemesis On buses with a 24v house system they are, and that's the more common configuration for Prevost conversions (Liberty/Marathon for sure). On other conversions they're 12v (Royale/Country Coach). The chassis alternator is always 24v. The Vanner system then utilizes the chassis 24v bank of start batteries for both 12v and 24v chassis needs. The big oil cooled DN50 is only for the house systems.

    My compressor on my series 60 has a relief valve that a genius put between the compressor and the engine block. Apparently you can turn the head around or somehow put that valve on the other side of the compressor. The new valve is a bit longer and wont fit between the block and the compressor so we re-installed the old one. Maybe its on the governor? Its been a couple of years since I looked at it. My other issue is the 2 speed clutch fan. I think I need to replace the sensor as I had to over ride it and run it continuously. Its very hard to get to it.

      You'll like it on your C7, that's basically the same engine I did this on. Whether or not it will give you EGT depends on whether the engine's ECU knows the EGT, and then whether it's transmitted on the J1708/J1939 connection. In your case, the C7 doesn't have an integrated EGT. However, I have another video on how I added EGT to my 3126B: th-cam.com/video/UyZEdqaIkOg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=nRIIp5O_TQRp6lGx And then also check out this video on an easy way I lowered EGTs by about 100F: th-cam.com/video/6iA9XPyhXPc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=eN5Y738wJ6qledEt

      It will work if that DDEC supports J1708 or J1939. I don’t know if a DDEC2 would support that.

    I have the same cat RV set up. I'm thinking of a air to water intercooler... Also contemplating a side radiator & spinning it with a fan belt set up like a CORVAIR... I'm baffled on why they made the intake a 180 degree sharp bend to the manifold. doing a air to water would allow a nice design with clean air flow...

    Hey Ted, I work on a converted prevost for a charity in the Ottawa area, would you happen to know the part number for the filters? I cannot find anything when I google the number in the prevost service manual!

    • @TedsGarage
      @TedsGarage หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you go to the Prevost website (Prevostcar.com) and then click technical manuals, you’ll be able to look up the different manuals for the bus you’re working on based on the VIN. The manual is very long and divided into sections. I believe the last section has those part numbers.

    Hi 👋🏻 and thank you for the video. I'm trying to learn how to get my RV (35000 pounds I believe) a bit higher off the ground. I got some wood put under 1 of tires and it wasn't enough. My RV is on a lopsided incline, so 1 end is sitting much higher than the other. I need to get it lifted, I'd say 2 feet off of the ground, so I can add more wood and try to level it out. Do you have any suggestions?

    This is an old video, so I don't know if you'll see it. But I'm buying an older MCI right now, and the rads are rotten. My plan was to toss the original rads, and install 2-4 large diesel radiators with electric fans. The fans you picked will actually fit pretty well for me, so I'll probably end up using 4 pairs of them. Your video has given me a nice confidence boost. Thanks.

    • @TedsGarage
      @TedsGarage 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Another suggestion if you’re doing that: adding some scoops on the side will help get natural airflow in, which will help the efficiency of the fans. Is the MCI 2-stroke or 4-stroke? The old 2-strokes had more cooling issues.

    • @TinkerLynx
      @TinkerLynx 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      2-stroke 6V92 in an MCI 102-A2 And yes, especially with the automatic transmission they had lots of cooling issues even when in good shape. I'm not totally sure on the size of the original radiators, but I believe the 8v92 ones are 24.5x19.5x 7.25" thick. I was originally thinking four modern radiators stacked in two pairs. But I'd need a fairly powerful fan to for the effectively 4.4" thick core. But your video gave me the idea of removing the heat load from the engine oil and transmission. So I'm now thinking just two of those radiators, but with an air cooler in series before the stock plate coolers for both and a thermostatic valves so things still warm up quickly in the winter. And four sets of those fans (I actually found your videos while trying to find fans that where powerful enough). The new rads are too large to fit in the original space (I specifically wanted a larger area to reduce the needed fan pressure for the same cooling). So I have yet to decide if I'll put them on the back above the engine bay like the later MCIs or on the lower side doors.

    • @TedsGarage
      @TedsGarage 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That sounds like a very cool project (pun intended). Reducing the overall cooling load on the radiators will be a must for you. Also make sure that you add.

    • @TinkerLynx
      @TinkerLynx 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Make sure that you add enough electrical capacity to run the fans was what I was going to say.

    Great video! I too am planning on separating the trans cooler from the engine cooling on my 3000 and have a question for you. How did you determine the output side from the transmission to the new oil cooler. Just thought I'd ask before crawling under the coach. Thank you! Side note: I have a buddy with an American Revolution that did have this trans cooler failure....uggg....I am so glad to have found your video as I didn't think to separate like you have shown.

      The way I found the flow vs return side was simply to have both hoses located where I wanted them but disconnected, and then started the bus with my wife watching. As soon as she saw flow I shut it off. Loses a bit of fluid and is simple but worked for me. Good luck!

    Because of your vid I bought a Vibratech dampener. My series 60 vibrates so bad. I've checked king pins, replaced shocks twice, new tires with balancing, 3 axle alignment, rear suspension height adjustment and driveline checked for play in u-joints. NOTHING. So the dampener will be here tomorrow and I'm gonna install it Saturday. I'm also gonna use one of the old bolts as a guide like one of your commenters noted. I'll come back and tell how it works out. Thank.
