The MAM Journals - 2024 review or, How Not to Create a "Successful" YouTube Channel...
A look back at 2024 . The 3 most viewed videos and my favourite bikes of the year. Unusually for me a short moan, as I explain why I think Silverstone race circuit currently has the wrong approach to motorcycling and what they could do to resolve it ...
My 100TH , and for now last video, I go through how the channel has done this year, what I have learnt so far and what my plans are for 2025. Not as heavy going as the description suggests , it is an easy going half hour review of the year ...I hope that you enjoy it !

I’ve own one of these for a year now… I’ve had all the sports bikes and motocross wanted something to tour on and not speed everywhere… This bike is awesome the handling on it is mental I surprise all the sport bikes when it come to the bend especially when I’m over taken them 🤣 Yes there’s some nicer look adventure bikes but I love mine… my dad used to have the older vstroms 650-1000s had a few of them that’s the main reason I brought one… these bikes are legendary every person I’ve spoken to about them love them
Awesome close up shots! It’s awesome getting to see all the minor details
I raced a 1976 GT750A one day at Snetterton in 1977. Believe me - once was enough. The ground clearance was awful, and the steering became dangerously light over a ton. I lapped a lot quicker on my RD250D...

I have one of these for year 7000 mls and i think of selling it for a BMW R1250RS. I drove the one of my friend. He took my GT for maybe 70 mls . At first i wanted my GT back but the more i got used to the rs the more i enjoyed the unbeleavable punch of 1250ccm boxer engine. We drove very fast and fun fact a friend was not able to follow us (GT and RS) on his S1000XR. I guess i'm not exactly a BMW fan. And the RS drive told me to change the shock and keep the GT. Seems he did like it either. So now i probaly will improve the chassis of the GT with a new YSS Shock and keep it.
@@donaldduck9424 There is a comparison ( slightly tongue in cheek) between my GT and my GS , on the channel 👍 I upgraded my 1250 to the 1300 now ..

Great video! Along with many bikes, I used to have an F800GS, loved it, we went everywhere as the 'big-bike TET route guinea pig'. Then I chopped it in for a 701E for more demanding stuff several years ago. Always missed the GS's ability to handle anything like, riding over from Germany, across UK, doing the off-road "Coast to Coast" with friends, then turning round and riding back through the snow. 1200mi+ in comfort and with ease. Roll on to last year and I bought the same bike as in this video. LOVE IT!! Now getting it TET ready to go back across Picos, Pyrenees and down to Italy, via the sweeping mountain passes. A very capable and adaptable machine in any form.
@@625Joe Thanks for sharing your views and experience ! I bought the 1300 for our touring fun but if I was , like you , looking for something capable of a bit of both would have another good look at this model . Good bike . Very capable 👍

Noooo.... just signed up before watching this video. Sorry! 100 for you to catch up on … Looking forward to my tours . Might be inspired then 👍

@@F3udF1st The DE is a lot of money . RE a bit more reasonable . Suzuki has historically delivered great performance for the money . Some models are getting expensive now ….
A great video, informative, well presented and its a beaut of a bike. I had a S4 & crikey that was a beast. It was like starting up a tractor on a cold morning but when warm and on the road there was no stopping it. Sure, I had to wrestle with it but the noise, weight and blunt nosed power was part of the enjoyment, especially on a motorway, being buffeted, over taking car's and thinking your lid will surely come off at any moment. The colours of the TriColour are outstanding, really sets it off and I do envy you owning this as they are not cheap and finding one is not easy. Spot on video.

Seems to be a charming motorcycle. I like your pleasant review of this bike from the past.
When you fit that to your yapper 20:17 I'll come back to hear.
When you fit that to your yapper 2017 I'll come back to hear.
I built a 400/4 out of a box of parts I bought back in the 80s. Modded the hell out of it, too. Good times until it, and me, were munched by a blind car owner one dark night. We both ended up a mangled mess. The bike itself, particularly the engine which I fully restored, lived on in another 400/4. Would love another because these felt great to ride with a "woomphy" nice sound, but the prices are way too crazy for me these days. A 550/4 might be a cheaper option, as it never had the charisma of its little brother but was essentially the same bike, just bored out a little and a few minor changes to its engine. The cam chain tensioner was a bit better too, but not by much!
I had two GT750's a drum brake 72 and a 75. According to the magazines at the time the 75 was much the better bike with better brakes and more power; but in reality the 72 was much the nicer bike to ride; except for the braking. The 72 had a wider spread of torque, it could be ridden easily around town at 2500 rpm in forth and had power pretty much from idle, much like my GT550. The later bike felt fast when cranked because it was peaky. It would come on the pipe at 3500 but with the taller gearing it was a dog at lower rpms at normal traffic speeds compared to the early bike.
Excellent albeit brief review Michael, would be good to hear your thoughts should you ever get the opportunity for a longer trip on it! I think it's a fine looking bike and although I've never owned a 'cruiser' type bike before ( except the Honda Valkyrie F6C, which wasn't feet forward) reckon I might give one of these a go. Fitted with a screen and some panniers it could prove pretty capable.
Thanks for the really good and in-depth review. I do like the style of the BSA and from yours and other reviews its built well and a solid bike.
Great review. I'm seriously considering purchasing one of these bikes but not sure about chain drive after having so many bikes with shaft drive. Can you please speak to the maintenance you do on the chain? I understand you haven't had to adjust the chain much but what about cleaning and lubing the chain? In your experience is the chain maintenance pretty straightforward and easy on this bike? Thanks.
@@Rob-w3r I do keep the bike clean and when on the ramp , include the chain in the process . I suspect one of the reasons I haven’t needed to adjust the chain much is because I do clean and lubricate it . It isn’t hard work or difficult . You just need to keep on top of it .
Thanks for your quick reply. How often do you clean and lube the chain and what chemicals do you use?
@ About every 500/700 miles . Usual chain cleaner, brushes and lubricant .. nothing special . Much easier if you just find 20 minutes to keep on top of it .
Thanks again. I understand you have a shaft drive BMW as well as your Suzuki GT. Would you say maintaining the drive chain on the Suzuki is a pain in the a** compared to the shaft drive on the BMW? I do a good bit of touring here in the US....most of my trips are 2,000-3,000 miles with shaft drive bikes. How do you clean/lube your GT chain when you're away from home on long distance touring on a bike with no centerstand? Last but not least, how hard is it to keep the rear of the GT clean when cleaning and lubing the chain every 600 or so miles? Sorry to ask so many questions....I love the GT but this chain maintenance stuff is new to me.
@ I suspect you are over thinking this Rob . I have toured , 2 up , 2000 mile tours and not needed to adjust the chain until I got home . Adjust before you go and keep your eye on it . Just like you would tyres ?
That's not a bad looking bike company must of listened to a decent designer 😂
@@marc9089 😂 Looks are subjective .
I think thanks to having only 2 cylinders the 650 sounds better (to me) than the 900. And the green color rock. I would still pick the W800 over this one, but I think that Kawasaki did a graet job with this bike with a mix of a new tech and retro design.
Great video! Have you found which cleaner is suitable for the rims? Mine is a GSA1250, also Rallye but with gold anodised wheels, I'll try with some Diablo Gel from Chemical guys after a long trip to give it a try
Thank you . I use S100 bike cleaner . Need to be careful with it and follow the instructions but it does work . I have actually changed the bike now and bought the new 1300 .. with gold wheels 👍
A None standard horn on this ! I had an air horn on my first one !! I bought a multi tone horn kit for a car ( before they became illegal in the UK ) and used the smaller horn ( the large one wouldn't fit between the horn mounting and the front mudguard !) The small compressor went under the seat ,where the tool kit should have been .The negative from the compressor went straight to the negative on the battery and the positive went straight to the horn switch on the handlebars via some little box thingy ,what not . A relay ? It wasn't half loud !! It made people jump if they weren't expecting it ! A lot of people asked " Does the horn actually work ? Can my kid hear it ? " . A big change form the Honda horn which just made a very weak " eeerrrh " sound !
Splendid review. Just starting to see these here is the USA. Was torn between this and the 350 Classic. In the end settled on the Classic in Halcyon Green. Best from Ohio, USA.

@@michaelmam Got the 1000SE as some good deals around at the moment. New 1100 still a few weeks away from my local dealer and the new colours don’t thrill me. The water buffalo was a failure from the beginning! AMA rider Gary Nixon rode one in the AMA dirt track series, it failed there as well. It was just too heavy. this was early seventies.
Great honest review, im looking at buying one of these but weary of the seat height and overall size as im 6ft5 and a little on the chunky side i don't want go be towering over the bike. Anyone got any real world experience on this that is tall and hefty?
Loved the Star Trek reference! Kirk always trusted Spock and Scotty and would indeed buy this bike, IMHO. I'm strongly considering buying this bike. It's been a looooong time since I did a lot of riding so I ask you and all here, would you "relearn" on this bike using rain mode? The IMUs certainly would help to attenuate rusty mistakes. Thoughts?
@@maboswel For what it is worth my perception of the challenges faced by returning riders is more about weight and balance . Bikes are only fierce if you open the throttle quickly? The bike is heavy and carries its weight high. Push one around if you can , to help you get a feel for it . You will need good foot contact both sides to hold it 👍
@ Thank you! It’s definitely heavy. I’m 6’3” and about 220 so I think I should be able to muscle it around, even though I’m in my 60s. Really appreciate the advice!
