I love the digitized sprite look so much and wish they still made games like this. It’s something so realistic yet totally not realistic and retro looking about it. Strangely more immersive for me at least. I like the look of the digitized crowds in those fighting games and would argue they look more realistic than newer 3d model crowds like in the sports games. Of course their animations are no where near as realistic or fluid as the modern stuff but it still gives me more of a real crowd feeling, even though they are essentially cardboard cutouts lol. Would love modern 2d games with digitized sprites though.
yeah there is something really interesting and immersive about that graphical style. It may just be nostalgia but I find MK3, MK3 and SF3 super visually appealing to this day because of the detailed sprites! Thanks for coming by and hanging out btw!
@ no problem man thanks for making a video on this and yeah I definitely think Nostalgia absolutely plays a part. Sega Genesis was my first console growing up and I had MK2. I know people today would think it looks silly lol.
Dude, this vertical shooter is a trip! 😂 Still, it looks pretty fun! Awesome job researching this oddity, GeekS! 🙌🙌
Thanks man really glad you enjoyed it. Soon as insaw it i was like what..the hell gotta cover this lol
Never heard of it, never seen it. Thank you for the Video 👍 I learned something new.
Your welcome I'm thrilled you enjoyed it and learned something new. Thank you so much for hanging out!
❤
thanks for coming b y Batman!
Interesting game, I've never seen or heard of this one. The 3x3 grid style of control kinda reminds me of the shooting sections of Snatcher on the Sega CD. It also had a 3x3 grid and you would select a grid and then press shoot when the enemy appeared.
Snatcher Is Much Easier With The Lightgun th-cam.com/video/VGw5VNrW4RA/w-d-xo.html
Huh I don't think I ever played snatcher. I had the Sega CD that game just doesn't come to mind at all I'll have to look it up
@@deegeegeeretrogaming6684 Yah I have a Justifier and I do play it that way. I think visually that game looks waaaaaay better on a CRT as well. A lot of people that play it today will not be playing it with a light gun though.
My first experience with Mario was inside a store owned by one of my cousin, with Super Mario Bros played on the NES who served as a "sample console" for customers. I played the hell out of it. Today I own a lot of Mario stuff, even a giant fluffy action figure of him standing on my bed's cushions. 😃
lol I love it, I have a few Twomps and a bullet bill around the house myself! Thanks for hanging out btw!
Definitely deserves to be on the series. I’m not sure how much it’s a genre maker as it’s a platformer. For me though, it’s an honorable mention as it was inventive and inspired other great games. So I do think it earned its spot even though it would need an addendum to the definition of genre makers to be here. Still a well deserved spot though.
I think the swappable weapons on demand on demand level selection added enough to the platformer genre we hadnt seen to make the list personally but maybe thats just me. Thanks for swining by btw man always good to see you!
Here to say that I love 20 and 30XX, they're easily some of my favorite games of all time. Yes indeed, I am a huge MegaMan fan. But I mean it
Im big in the main megaman line i beat the first 4 or 5 of them and the fist 4 of the X series. Which given how many there are isnt a ton but its still a lot of game. I really so need to try out 20XX and 30XX they look great! Thanks for hanging out btw!
Sunsoft lover since the early days here. I jumped like a child when I heard for the first time that the company had to release some official collections for the Evercade retro system. Their soundtracks (with their now historical "samples synth bass" on the NES) are the reason why I make chiptune music today.
Nice!!! Yeah i almost dropped down on that evercade collection but most of the games i love from them are licensed games save blaster master. Love me some chiptunes btw sometimes i pull up playlists of just that to listen to at work or walking the dog!
@@geekstorian Blaster Master is a masterpiece of creativity, there are absolutely no doubts about that. My favourite Sunsoft game remains Journey to Silius by the way, I love it to the point that I'm searching to grab its soundtrack on vinyl for a bargain since years...
The video has a lot of good information, but the pronunciation of Shigeru Miyamoto and Gunpei Yokoi's names were awful. If you are going to cover stories about Japanese game developers, you need to get their names right. There are dozens of videos on TH-cam alone that you could have referenced to get proper pronunciation. It lacks professionalism and grates on the ears if you know how their names should sound.
I appreciate the feedback hopefully you had a good time watching regardless. Either way thanks for giving the video and the channel a chance!
@geekstorian To be clear, I did enjoy the video and I will continue watching future videos. I hope your channel grows and thrives.
It's ok Mario, you aren't the only one who was an accident
LOL nice Luke, glad you could finally comment and thanks as always for coming by man!
@geekstorian lol glad I could finally comment. IDK it wouldn't show the comments section. I tried over and over, eventually I was able to comment
Mama Mia! It's a Mario Time!✌🏼 I love how Mario's first outing was as an Ape Hunter
I know right talk about going hardcore from the jump! good to see you Aries!
I think SMB was the first game I ever played. I still own my original copy of SMB/Duck Hunt and SMB 3.
what no SMB2!!!!!!! Seriously though all great games! Also starting with SMB is a good way to get into gaming!
@geekstorian I got SMB2 as an adult. We rented it when I was younger, but, of course my neighbor owned it.
This is advanced stuff.!..I played donkey Kong Jnr. on hand-held lcd..and some..but yes,Kong had to be saved..yet Mario broke it wide open.!..we built this city..
thanks for coming by man always a pleasure to see you!
Kokotoni Wilf..but Rygar won me..loved the pace..but way back then we played for a high-score..It was almost ritual, old arcades
Very cool ❤
thanks for coming by man!
I absolutely thing it belongs here. Megamanlike games are some of my favorites.
ok glad. I wasn't the only one who thought this way. The more I thought on it the more I was like .....yeah...yeah this makes sense!
Definitely a series unlike anything we had ever seen, and...one of my favorites
Yeah I was on the fence on this one then was like no at the time this really sort of changed the game at least for me it seemed that way glad at least one person agrees lol.
@geekstorian yeah this one blew me away as a kid, I can't think of any games we had ever seen like Mega Man before.
I had Mega Man 2 as a kid. My friend had like every Mega Man game, so I played pretty much all of them.
Love megaman 2 I think its still my favorite out of the 4 or 5 I've played! Good to see you btw Scrambles!
Amazing channel ❤
Thanks Batman
The R360 was one of the greatest things I remember from my trips to Las Vegas as a kid!! I spent everything I had saved for the trip on this game! I think it was like $12 or $15 per play so $100 went pretty fast, but it was sooooo worth it!! Got my dad to try it once and he was turning green when he crawled out!!! 🤢🤮😆😂🤣Have only ever seen 3 of them in my life, 2 in Vegas (working) and 1 in Reno (broken) Would love to find one again!! It was more than a game, it was an experience!!
Lol love this story! Thanks a ton for sharing it and its awesome you got to see so many of these in person your poor dad though 😂😂! Thanks for hanging out btw!
They need to remake this game
I wouldn't be opposed to it, it looks like a fun one to play with friends! Thanks for hanging out btw!
This is Aleciious.!.bless the barley..I feel sad never got this beauty..hops away, yes.!
lol good to see you man hopefully you liked this one!
Similar to Chuck's "Cat Fighter!" cabinet, where you had to place a cat on a tray under the control panel to activate the Start screen.
CAT FIGHTER!!!!!!! meow. Good to see you hasselhoff!
@geekstorian I only get the time to lurk anymore, but I'm always trying to support you guys. Great video, as always. Hope all is well with you.
Saw one of these at Pier 39 back in the 90's. That Arcade had all the rare games of the time somehow.
thats awasome! Did it play ok? Also thanks for hanging out btw!
The perfect Arcade game doesn’t exist….. 😲
and so...the hunt begins, good luck to you on your quest sir!
I hope someone does a review of the games featured in the Simpsons. S1-S8.
ok I kind of love this idea not sure it would fit with my channel but its an excellent idea!
@@geekstorian It's likely to bring YT's tactical team down on you. Doh! Keep up the great work in the meantime. It'll pay off. AJ at why files was under viewed for a year and went ballistic in a few months.
The bar top machines from the 90s were so bizarre. Gambling, porn and fight games. They had weird swivel mounts.
yeah honestly bartops were kind of weird I remember loving them sometimes frustrating layout wise depending on the game to use but you ALWAYS wanted to sit down and try them even if its a game that you had played a million times on stand up unit because somehow it just "hit" different.
@geekstorian Less frustrating than table top Ms. Pacman. Idk why, something about the table just wasn't right. I blame the Russkies. Brezhnev, that freaking guy.
There's gotta be a barcade somewhere that has this setup. It's kind of brilliant 👏
I know I kind of want to find one and try it, its a really neat idea!
Nice
thanks for hanging out!
Very cool
good to see you batman!
My Uncle still has the first Odyssey and Odyssey 2. My husband and I are trying to talk him into giving them to us. I remember my Uncle bringing it home to my Granny's house when I was a very small child (toddler age...4 maybe) . It was love at first sight! A couple years later my parents got my brother an Atari and I played it more than him and so on with the Nintendo. I spent a big portion of my teens in arcades. I still enjoy gaming in my free time.
Awesome story thank you so much for sharing and sorry it took me so long to respond! Thanks so much for sharing this again and for hanging out!
0:40 wait Nintendo was on the rise? No one told me. Is Atari ok? What happened to Atari?!!! Lol
lol good to see you man thanks for hanging out!
@@geekstorian I love how you ask people if they’re new to the channel. Dummies aren’t already subbed to you, there shouldn’t be any new comers cause you should be looking at million subs at least by now man ;)
@@terran0797 lol I appreciate it but I'm a niche thing and thats ok. I have fun doing it and people like you enjoy it thats enough :)
I played the remake, zero mission for the first time recently and loved it
Zero missions amazing! There were a few head scratching parts through it on how do you get to certain points but that's par for the course. All the stuff they added and the map system are phenomenal! Thanks for coming by and hanging out btw!
Picked up a Lordsvale MVS arcade cab a few months back for £150 & I love it :)
Good snag man , those things look sooo cool it would be a blast to own one with some good carts in it! Thanks for coming by and hanging out btw!
@@geekstorian I'ma bit too busy renovating my house to fully appreciate it right now, but hopefully next year I'll get more time to spend on it & bring it back to it's former glory
i played the six-player and never knew how special the design of it was until now. although, it was always special to me. when my parents and i went to the theater, i played it every time and for as long as my parents would keep giving me quarters. i liked to play as colossus because he had the strongest feeling melee moves, as far as i remember. the theater was sold six years ago and while they still have an arcade, they dont have x-men.
if anyone knows somewhere i can play this in minnesota, please let me know!
Thank you so much for coming by and sharing this story I love hearing all of these :). Also yeah I had no idea till I looked into it how wild the design was or how few there seemed to be one around and maybe I was seeing the four player and thinking it was the six player cabinet who knows!
@@geekstorian of course! Thanks for providing the space and listening! I might have seen the 4 player and mistaken it too, but i want to say i can remember the double screen and how you had to stand right in front of it to get the best seem between the two
I need to play through Super Metroid as an adult. One of the best SNES games of all time.
Yeah its a great game but then all the major ips had hige bangers on that system. Super Metroid, LTTP and super mario world to name a few!
I love Metroidvania games so much, and this is one of my favorite series for creating that genre.
this was the first game my mom got me for my NES so yeah it always has a place in my collection :)
Nothing terrible to say about current saturation, yet,I want to say we were more dedicated back then..less fanatical, more awe
I can see that thanks for coming by man always good to see you
@@geekstorian keep it coming,I be watching..good to see you too yes..envious of that man-cave you got there..again.!
I hate backtracking, backtracking makes me feel as though I'm never making my way forward. I guess this is why the Metroid games are the only Metroidvania games I like
I can see that, I like the exploration of it personally but I totally see why it would annoy the hell out of people.
@geekstorian yeah to me I feel like I'm never making progress lol
❤🎉
good to see you batman thanks for coming by!
I'm lucky enough to be friends with the (recent) owner of one of these. It's working almost perfectly as it's being restored. Played on it once, the flight controls were not registering pull up commands and so i was spinning (and screaming) like mad inside the machine. Had to press the huge red stop button inside the cab. :D It's the pinnacle of SEGAs technological achievements on the arcades and makes me proud of having such a beauty of a machine close to me.
ok I'm not sure if I should laugh or not but that story is both really really funny and unnerving. I think I would of lost it myself I was in there and the thing just started spinning wildly lol. Its super cool you got to play one though thanks a ton for sharing!
Yeah, I got arguably the same feeling as riding a car that's unable to turn. >_< You can definitely feel the Gs haha.
Played on both versions of the latest densha de go arcade cabinet. The seat unfortunately is just a regular seat, no moving parts. The game is super fun regardless.
yeah it looks like its pretty fun. I did know only some of the versions had any kind of feedback in the seat which is unfortunate its a really good addition IMO. Thanks for hanging out btw!
This is actually similar to the mechanics used in an old Tank Driving Training Simulator used for the actual US Army
is it really? I've never looked into that so I have no idea its good its good to know though thanks!
@geekstorian th-cam.com/video/AcQifPHcMLE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=eRg6sx6htRGm0AUa
Mascots really become synonymous with platformers. I think mascots kinda died off when platformers did. As they resurge, so will the mascot character
Yeah i think your right the other part is using the char outsode the game to which most of the ones we mentioned were for various companies or manufacturers and you just dont see it much anymore platformer or not
@@geekstorian yeah the whole gaming landscape has changed. As the next generation of gamers are leaning more towards FTP games like Fortnite and Roblox, there really is no marketable character there.
Great show guys!
My favorite part of this is that this devolved into "list off popular/notable video game characters" instead of actual mascots, then segata sanshiro comes up who is by definition the mascot for the Saturn, and it's like "eh. . . nahhhhh"
Lol well he was and he wasnt in japan for sure but wothin the criteria we set earlier which is easy to miss admittedly maybe not so much. Mind you thays retroroots definition so take it woth a grain of salt 😂😂😂. Thanks for chdcking it out btw!
Very cool
Thanks for coming by man!
thats a dope a** room bro. i wonder how much the pacman table tops cost. i havnt seen one in forever
Appreciated man but its some b roll i found floating around so oong ago i forgot where. Sorry to disappoint but my soace isnt setup for that kond of arecade right now. It is a killer arcade space though i agree
I remember seeing this game being made fun of in early 2000s game magazines and the internet and honestly the most shocking thing now is seeing how limited the graphics and concept were. For some reason from the photos in those magazines I always thought you would sneak up on people on a rail like Pokemon snap style and have to earn a probe and that the animation was a lot more fluid lol
Yeah its kind of a weird game and more a gimmick thing that would only really work in the arcade and even then only certain places. Its still a fun talking piece and interesting part of gaming history. Thanks for hanging out today btw!
cartridges were the right way to go, but at the wrong time. since the optical format only lasted 1 and a half more gen. many ps3 games required installation, the same for 360, ps4 and xbox one, all of them. and now it is the same, but with ssd, which are cartridges, but much more advanced, the optical format is useless almost to this day, only to install and sell is useful, you can not play from it, so if, for example, a n64 cartridge would have had the same capacity as a cd, not much more expensive, because there is a huge difference would be noticed. but it came out at the wrong time
Your not really wrong the problem was the cost of materials to make them at the time and the fact larger storage on a cd was cheaper. You also have to recall that around this time no one was installing anything to the console that didnt happen till the OG xbox. So while slower on read time it did allow the medium to move forward at a time it would of been handicapped by the prohibitive cost of carts. So much like you said good idea WRONG time for it. Tha ks so much for hanging out btw
@@geekstorian yes, that's what I mean, with the little ram that the consoles had at that time, you could wait a few seconds to load, but over time, when the technology was advancing, the reading speed did not advance with the size of the memory, so it stopped playing from the disk. a ps5 game would take more than 5 minutes to load or more if it would only run from the reader(per stage/section), since the reader reads in MBs per second, VS GBs of ram. in the ps1 gen and ps2, it was about 300KB vs 2/3MB ram, that is, 10 seconds. and in the next(ps2 gen), about 5MB for 32/64MB of ram, ie, even less, but in the next gen, and began to rise the difference, in the ps4 even more and now, in the ps5/Series X, because even more, so now all consoles bring ssd
