My family had the Colecovision. My friends had the Intellivision. I was kinda jealous because we had different games lol No longer have it. Don't exactly remember what happened to it. All I remember is playing Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Smurfs, Zaxxon and Looping 😂 Wish I still had it.
Oh wow, I've never seen that arcade, but I would have totally given it all my quarters back in the day just to sit in that chair
Hello there fellow trecky. I would have loved to play this back in the day or now on the arcade. The captains chair cab would be an incredible experience. I have played the MMO years back and it was ok.
Yeah me to man I would of loved this one. I never tried the MMO it didn't really look all that interesting from the trailers was it any good? Also good to see you btw!
@geekstorian Good to see you too, man. It was alright for an F2P MMO, but nothing special.
I LOVE this game! It’s actually not as difficult as you may believe because you can “dock” at the starbases in order to repair shields and such. You can play for quite awhile on a single credit!
Yeah I saw that and I also saw people blowing up the stations while I was looking at footage I have no idea "why" you would do that but they did. It still looked pretty complicated for a game around this time but it also looked fun as hell! Thanks for coming by and hanging out btw!
@@geekstorian hey no problem at all dude! I enjoy your content ♥️
Hadoken! I first encountered SF2 in a mom and pop movie rental store, oddly enough lol. Being a kid, barely tall enough to press the buttons-the characters were so big! And the crushing sound effects of a hard leg kick! The music 🎶 too! I’d say SF2: Turbo is my favorite street fighter followed by SFA 3, and SF2: the new challengers. Turbo cause it was such a leap forward from World Warrior, and also, I just like how fighting games back then were alot shorter than fighting games of today Ryu was my favorite character-not just cause he was the easiest to learn, but because of his personality “ceremony means nothing to him. The fight is everything” Thanks for the vid, Geeks!
Yeah I can see digging that about Ryu I think mine was Chun Li initially and eventually out of the original cast I think it became Ken because he could keep up and often surpass ryu but had a family and was successful!
My God was this fun in the sit down cabinet. The Colecovision version is really good!
never played the colcovision version it did look really really good though. I wasn't much of a trekkie as a little kid I grew into that so it wouldn't have appealed to me at that young of an age.
I'm a Trekkie and I wish I knew this game existed I would have looked for it and played it
99.9% sure you put this comment on the wrong video but yeah absolutely I feel the same!
I played the sit down version and as a big Stay Trek fan I was in geek heaven :)
I bet I hate I never saw this one to give it a go man! I couldn't help myself but do a video on it when I saw it!
@@geekstorian I'm glad you did, I think a lot of people didn't know about this.
this was one of the very first games I ever played in an arcade! (sit down version!) I was around 8 years old! I think I had MAYBE played pac-man before that, but saw this in our local movie theater and, not sure how, but convinced my dad to load it with quarters and let me play a game or 2! I had NO idea what I was doing, lol, but I think I remember it was fun!
Thanks for sharing man thats awesome! I never even saw this one in the arcade as a kid I'm sad to say I think I would of loved it!
this was a great part of my childhood. I remember installing unreal tournament sequels just so I could keep using this controller. it has the advantage over the PS-style controllers of being able to press a lot of buttons WHILE doing aiming. I think one of the reasons it might have seen modern versions or become the default design is because its easier and maybe more precise to use the thumb stick compared to using your wrist. still, I suddenly remembered this joystick today out of nowhere and I wished I still had it !. If I had one of these I'd 100% try it for a Skyrim run.
It would be cool to see one of these reimagined or reworked to work with modern hardware. I know at one point they had a project doing that or at least i think so not sure how far it went though may be worth looking into if you still have one. Tha ks for hanging out btw!
Woah, did you see Digital Foundry just did a 2+ hour video on Sunsoft yesterday? I wonder if you inspired them.
Lol seriously?! Ok thats kinda awesome this was a series i wanted to do to get some incite into where the heck these companies went that looked like they were killing it in the industry and give an overview of what i gound its cool digital goundry did a much deeper dive!
Activision like atari would've been great. But they've fallen from grace.
Yeah theor culture shifted to much and then eventually just ended up owned by microsoft. Thanks for coning by btw!
As someone who directly remembers it, and its competition, at the time, it was quite obvious that, despite the shiny "64bit" moniker, most of the games on the N64 just weren't all that visually,... Good. Some were decent but texture mapping was a real issue for the console, leading to a LOT of quite dull looking, murky polygons. There are a great many Saturn games which looked more visually interesting because they had more detailed textures. And thats the SATURN. As you say, people couldn't justify the expense of the carts when many of the games looked murky, muddy and dull.
See I don't recall much of the Saturn from around this time I had one friend who had it and it had some very pretty games but the library seemed small and its presence in stores was limited due to the way they launched. Most people I knew had a N64 or a PlayStation and though I think how the N64 handled 3d graphics better since thats what it was made for most preferred the PlayStation because it had cheaper games and "more" games. I honestly think all the 3D games from this era look a bit rough as it was the first step into this avenue of gaming and the tech just wasn't really "ready" yet. Thanks for coming by and hanging out btw!
I had both genesis and snes (im 37) and i never heard of this until the retro game "scene". From what i remember the genesis was mostly sports games to my peer groups while the snes was the rpg console. Both had fighting, shmups, puzzle, platforms, but they specialized in one or the other (sports for cool kids/rpgs on snes for baby nerds like me) I have all the mini consoles except for ps1. This turbo is like stepping into an arcade. The gameplay is similar, yet different enough, as well as the sound to what im used to that its so new and enjoyable. This probably wouldve been for the upper middle class kid, little to no friends, loved anime, etc... in my opinion. Id probably have had this +cd or the duo if i even knew about it.
yeah I think only a few people who really sought out the more obscure consoles got this one when it came out. I feel like most of us discovered it later as we either got into retro gaming online or started collecting. I disagree a bit that genesis was only for sports though. I had one and it had a good number of rpgs, platformers, shooters were there "as" many no not at all but enough to make it a super geeky type console if you wanted it to be. Thanks for hanging out btw!
Imagine going from ET on Atari, to Legend of Zelda on NES.
lol I know people who did going from a more point based game to something like super Mario or Zelda blew a ton of peoples minds in the day man. The 90s were similar with how fast things moved it was a really cool time in gaming!
I was playing Bonk and splatterhouse like there was no tomorrow. Way a head of it's time. Wish it had been managed better could have been the future.
yep I agree they had the potential to be a super strong contender it just wasn't marketed in a way that it got the attention it deserved. Thanks for hanging out btw!
Splinter Cell is a favorite. I didn't like the first dishonored but after the 3rd one. I kinda went back to play a couple of hours of the predecessors
@DREADPOOL keep on rocking 😎 🙌
never got to mess with splinter cell I just wasn't into a lot of stealth games at the time and its still not a mainstay. Every so often I run into one that I really need to play and I dip in like with Dishonored. I did hear great things about Splinter Cell though!
@@geekstorian You owe it to yourself to play the entire Splinter Cell series!
Always appreciate you ❤
He does great work. Love the breakdowns
thanks Batman!
I bought this game specifically because it was described to me as an early real-time strategy game, which is one of my favorite game genres. I’m sure HZ is a fantastic game, but I’ve yet to actually play it 😂
Yeah I keep meaning to either download a ROM for it or pick it up for the switch it was 8 dollars the other day that way I can stream it at some point..
Sunsoft was a force to be reckoned with on the NES and even on the GameBoy to some extent. Figures that they ultimately took themselves out; being a great developer is quite a bit different from running a great business 😏
yeah their management was just.....stupid, I can't think of another word. I mean electronics sure do more of that real estate ok a bit out there but sure, golf course though...da fu?!
I wish Densha games got localized. There are hardly any good train simulator games out there.
yeah they seem to be few and far between now I think they are just super niche so not many get made.. Thanks for hanging out btw!
This is nuts, lol. I want an air traffic controller game now.
hahaha! I wouldn't be surprised if someone does it at some point!
Point and click adventures were so freaking cool. I can't remember many by name anymore, but my middle school had a computer room run by a teacher who had a lot of games that he'd make copies of and give us access to play them. One of the games may have been King's Quest? I recall the game having a knight. There was also one that had green aliens. Boy, I wish I could remember their names 😩😢
Think one is actually kongs quest the other i think is day of the tentacle look those up see if you find it good to see you btw omega!!!
Geeks!! While this genre isn't one that I'd ever played, I've been fascinated by it ever since I first heard about it from the Japanese TV series, Game Center CX. There's a fully-translated game from Densha de Go on the Nintendo 64! I've considered importing the controller for it so I could give it a "Go!"
Ive heard great things and that switch commercial woth the throwbacks to the OG one is amazing!! Of nothing else try to find the switch release
yes i have played a few titles from the series on psp and will try and find it on switch as im wondering if its any good on there
Yeah i think it was japan only i cant recall of the switch is region locked or not i dont “think” it is so good luck! Also thanks for hanging out!
Love the adventures of Lolo series, rented the first two games all the time with my sister and I trying to work our way through it. I don't remember getting all that far in it when I was a kid though. Didn't beat any of them until I bought the games much later on the secondhand market. I can beat the US Lolo 1 almost in my sleep, I can beat Lolo 2 fairly easily, might take me a little longer, and I have beaten 3 once. But then I tried the Japanese Lolo 1 and 2 and the difficulty difference compared to the US versions is INSANE. I can't beat any of them. I still play it to this day and there are level editors out there for the games that are really straightforward and easy to use!
awesome man love hearing these kinds of stories! Thank you SO much for coming by and not only watching but sharing!
@@geekstorian Always happy to see people talking about Lolo! it was my fav game series on the NES, with Mega Man not far behind.
The legendary Gun Pay Tokyo.
thanks for coming by and hanging out.
The NegCon's biggest flaw was its plasticy, child toy-like design. The concept and function of the controller itself was actually brilliant, as it mimics a steering wheel in a strange, but oddly satisfying manner. It is to this day still baffling me that no other company has picked up the mantle and built upon this idea with hall effect sensors and what not, I'm sure it could be a great success if design and marketing is done right.
Yeah I think people feel the motion controls help with this enough at this point. Not sure I agree with it there is something to this concept that seems like it should be explored more IMO at least because your right its a really good concept that could do with some refinement to see if it can be modernized in a way that could make racing games more fun. Thanks for hanging out btw!
Btw, there's an error in the video title. Says Densh
Thank you going to fix this now!
All I know about the Wonderswan is that one time it made Vinny Vinesauce scream
well that's more than I know currently so that's something! Thanks for hanging out btw!
Arcades were the best place to experiment with new ideas
absolutely they were!
This is one of those specific types of experiences we lost when arcades went extinct. I don’t know if I would enjoy it particularly… But it is quite the setup. I’m sure Train lovers greatly appreciated it. Another Cool video GeekStorian. Love this series.
Thanks man really glad your enjoying it!
🫶👏
thanks for coming by man!
First fighting game I ever played and owned was Street Fighter II on the SNES. To this day I prefer it to modern fighting games because it doesn't have all the extra stuff. Still, MvC is always a favorite of mine too... Not sure I have a favorite character, but I do use the faster ones like Vega and Chun-Li more often.
Yeah i can totally see enjoying the simplicity of the earlier ones for sure. The new ones have so much going on it sometimes becomes a struggle to remember everything you need to be doing! I was also a huge chun li fan never got huge into vega though he was cool lookibg just not a good fit for me.
My first introduction to the X-Men and then like a week later the cartoon was announced on Fox. Great times
absolutely I will still occasionally boot this up on an emulator or on my ipad to play a round or two of it because its so much fun. I would LOVE to see a Konami beat'em up collection with this in it! Thanks for coming by and hanging out btw!
@@geekstorian with the popularity of the 97 show, I would love a sequel. Kinda how they did Shredders Revenge or Streets of Rage 4. Subbed and looking forward to checking out your other videos. Cheers!
@@darthalba3785 yeah a follow up based on 97 would be cool and also Thank you so much!
Street Fighter 2 was important because it was one of the first fighting games to do everything right. Still to this day, it's a game worth playing.
absolutely, thanks a ton for coming to hang out btw much appreciated!
Sad as it was my favorite console 😞
Yeah it could have done way better in the states. Honestly i didnt even see one in my area till i had a genesis and a Super Nintendo and no one really tried to sell it even when i did so it was mostly unknown in my area. I didnt get much into it till later when i got into the retro gaming scene. Damn shame to so e good titles on it to be sure!
@@geekstorian I was fortunate to have had one, I was actually all set to get a Genesis and my older brother said “don’t get Genesis all your friends have that, you can play it at their house, get Turbografx” I remember replying “ok, but what game should I get?” And he said “get Bonk, he’s carnivorous nerdy!” 🤣 And history was born. Later I got the cd add on and imported games also like Dracula X rondo. I sold the Turbo to get the Duo when it came out. I was a big fan of the NEC stuff. By brother passed away in October 2018, this is one of my fondest memories of him, he wasn’t always the best person or big brother.
Video games has surpassed comic books, too.
It does seem that way at this point yeah for sure!
The real battle was Atari 5200 vs. Colecovision.
BOTH AWESOME SYSTEMS.
From what i read on this and well saw as a kid a LOT of people stuck with the 2600 not that the 5200 didnt have fans it totally did but intellivision totally played off the 2600 compatibility! Your right though both had great games!
Street fighter 2 was definitely the game that started the fighting game frenzy. Favorite street fighter character is Ryu. Nice video man
Thanks man glad you liked it and yeah Ryu wss a hugely popular main i thi k my favorite was chun li and later sagat in the SF2 line of games!
Great video Geekstorian! SFII is still my favorite fighting game. Ryu is my go to
Yeah Ryu is a solid go to if you can get the dragon punch motion down that was his big hurdle back in the day getting that one motion down!
Very cool
Thanks Batman!
Tekken fans on suicide watch right now for not being included when you rattled off important fighting game IPs 😆😆😆😆
lol Tekken was huge but I didn't really include it in this one because I tend to rank 3D fighters against themselves I may do one on Tekken later as Virtual fighter kinda started the 3D fighter but I feel like Tekken was the MOST influential 3D fighter overall.
I've recently been playing Street Fighter Alpha 2 on the Snes and I'll be firing up the saturn later tonight when my S-Video cable comes in for it. Because of this video I'll be playing Street Fighter 2 Super Turbo on Saturn when that cable comes in :D This game helped shape my childhood, it was easily the most prestigious win when on arcade, the person who was the best at Street Fighter was considered the best over all in the arcade.
Yeah there was nothing like unseating someone in the arcade who was wrecking everyone! It was one of those times where even a new player could come in and surprise people and it took real skill to see the patterns and mix it up enough to get the win something I still struggle with today!
Excellent breakdown Geekstorian. Street fighter 2 absolutely defines fighting games as a genre. You can argue MK is more iconic, or that Tekken took things to the next level. But SF2 was first and that deserves recognition. Personally my favorite fighter is Killer Instinct. I just loved how it had the insane combos and unbelievable graphics style. Thanks for the excellent video! 👍
Thanks Hummus glad you liked this one, this was a childhood favorite and got me hooked hardcore on fighting games from that point on! Killer instinct is one of my favorites btw amazing game the 2013 one is INSANELY good if you haven't tried it!
SF2 is a real game changer. As a kid Guile now Ryu. But I’m not as good as I used to be 😅
I was big into Chun Li and Ryu as a kid, I've gotten an affinity for Guile over the years he's super tricky in the right hands! Thanks for hanging out btw!
Nice Ryu edit, and loved the game too..pve and pvp got leveled..no more pong, nice vid,new..thank you
Thank you glad you enjoyed this one!
My daughter always plays as Chun Li and kicks me to death.
lol that was my bae in the original it was corner punch punch punch into throw repeat or lightning kick! to death lol
I have Street Fighter 2 for Super Famicom (I took the two tabs out of the cartridge slot on my SNES so I can play Japanese games).
Nicceee never played the Famicom version!
Ken is my favorite but I can play any of the 8 very well.
I was a ryu giy originally these days between the two its definitely ken i feel like they rounded him out better as a fighter. Always good to see you btw!
@@geekstorian yeah when I got it on snes I learned to play all the characters. I remember playing it all the time with a buddy and 2 arcade stick controllers. In later versions I still only wanted to play red Ken. No other colors lol.
