Exodus was my first Ultima, but I never really understood how to play it until a decade or two later. But ya so many of the first steps for RPGs were taken right here. Also I LOVE the party from the FF1 clip, love the 3 Fighters, and love the names of the characters. I'll have to stop by NintendoComplete and drop them a like on their video and let them know you sent me :D
You know the more I think about it, I played Exodus before I played Final Fantasy, and I wonder if I loved FF and DW so much because they were like Exodus, but easier to understand? Maybe this is the game I should credit to getting me into RPGs and not FF1?
its possible I think it stands a good chance of coming out first. I know timeline wise on PC it did I'm just not sure from a famicom / NES perspective I didn't look it up.
@@geekstorian Yah I'm not sure on the dates they were released, but I know that I saw Exodus over at friends house, and then maybe even a year later another buddy of mine got Final Fantasy to play for a while. I got Dragon Warrior I think between them, but it was Final Fantasy 1 that I really got into. Dragon Warrior i just walked around and avoided crossing any bridges LOL.
I love the lore of Ultima. I never quite got on with the gameplay. I've only played the NES versions of Exodus and Quest of the Avatar, though. It seemed to me the further in to the games you got, longer the combat lasted, and at one point I just kind of had enough with the fights. On the subject of Ultima lore, my one buddy used the Virtue system in our D&D game (he was the DM) in place of a pantheon, so every cleric or paladin personified a virtue's ideals rather than a deity's. I actually really liked that concept. So, Ys next (if it hasn't been done already)? 😎
Ok using the virtue system in a campaign is a food idea that would really make you stop and think out choices more than you do. That was from ultima 4 wasnt it, the one that really didnt have a villian but just a virtue system you had to work towards?
@@geekstorian Correct - there really wasn't a final boss in Ultima IV. It had more of an emotional finale. The NES version also had one of the coolest character creation sections I've ever played.
I have a question. You state wizardry influenced ultima. How did it influence ultima when the series technically started in 1979 when wizardry started in 1981? Some may say ultima started in 1981 as well. However ultima 1 came out in June of that year and wizardry came out in September. So in every way, ultima was still released first. Either years ahead or at least months ahead of wizardry.
I was intending it to mean Ultima 3 not the ultima series, Wizardly had a lot of the aspects that made Ultima a big deal and used them in a game first thats more what I meant. Most games influanced other games around this time as the space was a lot smaller and everyone in the industry was heavily looking at what was going on with the other. More of a theory than a confirmed fact but thats how I saw it at least.
Ohhhh that makes sense. Thank you for answering the question, I really liked this video as RPGs are my favorite. And I do mean actual RPGs like this one and not Zelda lol. Well unless they are talking about Zelda 2 cause that was an rpg lol. Again great video man, I love to binge your videos
