The Ultimate Guide: Building and Weathering Airfix Starter Set Scale Model Kit
Pretty good for 1984.
It's always good, see how someone make mistakes before starting a new model😂
Just watched this again , I’m a slow learner lol not really just enjoying the vid
Brilliant review thanks. I have subscribed and just starting out at 62yrs old. I struggle with filling especially when you have to join aircraft sides and there is a gap. So if you have the time maybe you could do me a short video please. Many thanks. Not tried airbrushing yet just painting which looks awful tbh. So took a dive and got the Fengda Airbrush FE-183K So its a start 😁😁 Cheers Tony (Rotherham)
Q: I just got one. To spray @ 8 psi what ratio of paint to thinner u recommend ?
Nice build ! Sabre is a beautiful airframe. The Airfix kit looks really nice and your paint work is top flight. Keep them coming, always fun to see your videos.
Great info , thanks.
To correct what i said in video as pointed out to me Tamiya xf are acrylic resin paints tamiya lp are laquers paints if i say tamiya x-20 i mean x-20a sorry for any confussion
You, Sir, are a gentleman. Keep up the good work.
a good video to confuse the newbies....
Nice video mate. Tamiya are inaccurately labelled. I found out the hard way. Same as Mr.Color in that they are an acrylic lacquer. Tamiya do a proper lacquer paint more acmvailable in tge USA so do a yellow top thinner for that. Great paint with their thinner but prefer the larger range of vallejo and dont want the chemicals in the air. Vallejo color is for brush mostly though can be airbrushed but thats what Vallejo Air is for. 2 choice like Hataka. You will get tge oh so sensitive Tamiya fans complaining ( they all use iphones you know lol). Acrylic lacquers are a little stronger and may flatten better but once its all dry and your model is varnished/lacquered so what. Vallejo do a mecha range which is good for wargamers who handle their figures/models much more and has a lovely smooth finish. Great video pal. Covers an important subject that can save many minutes of washing out your airbrush. They have so many names for industrial thinners it is confusing. Well done buddy. I wonder if the critics do videos or just winge. Theres a way of correcting things or adding pounts without being arrogant. Nice one matey
cheers pal for what you have said tried to make it so people would understand that most "acrylic" paints are water based but a few ie tamiya call some of the paints acrylic and its easy unless you know that mixing water with these will result in a disaster as i have found out in the past i understand i should probably have explained it differently ie not use the word enamel as it may make some people think that they are enamels when they are not also in uk we dont get the full tamiya range ie the enamel stuff so i suppose in other areas of the world different products may get mistaken if i dont give the exact product name which is fair enough in my book personally i just do the videos as a way to keep me busy and as a way to help other model makers where possible in the couple years i have been making videos i have made mistakes and admit it and also accept when i get told that i got something wrong i also remember from when i first started model making and only paints we had was the humbrol and revell enamel small tins and now we have more paints than you can imagine thanks for the comments and glad you enjoyed the video
Tamiya XF acrylics aren't "inaccurately labelled". You are presenting disinformation ignorant of the facts unaware of their chemistry and choose to remain so. Tamiya XF Acrylics are NOT an "acrylic lacquer' any more than Mr. Hobby Aqueous which GSI Creos themselves refer to as a "water based acrylic" are. Both contain chemical solvents in their carrier, but are true Acrylics. Q.E.D. it's a bonus that Tamiya XF acrylics are compatible with their own & GSI Creos high odour hobby lacquer thinners but do not require them, X20A being Tamiya's recommended less noxious and lower odour thinner recommended for their XF Acrylic range. If you want to witness definitive incompatibility, combine any of the thinners from Tamiya or Creos Mr. Color ranges into a Vallejo polymer acrylic and watch what happens. 🤭 Tamiya LP are Tamiya's bottled lacquers the equivalent of GSI Creos Mr. Color Lacquer range. To reiterate Tamiya X & XF Acrylics (as opposed their X & XF Enamels, so labeled supplied in their signature small square base bottle) are true acrylic based paints NOT Acrylic Lacquers. Q.E.D.
Sheesh, tamiya LP is a enamel? Figure out ur paints, later
tamiya are lacquer paints but need to be treated in my old mans view like enamel paints as they will gunk up airbrushes and your normal paint brush if you try adding water to them as they are labled as acrylics now i aint gonna get into a argument with you as i was only trying in the video to show even if the bottle says acrylic then dont presume they always are anyways thanks for commenting
Precisely. And he's just spreading this misinfo abetted by arrogant reinforcement from others even more ignorant... were that possible. 🙄
@@yorkshiremanmodels FFS how many times do you need to be told. Justt as Tamiya LP is NOT an enamel and behaves nothing like an enamel, Tamiya XF Acrylic is NOT a "lacquer" paint. They are labeled as Acrylic because that's what they are. 🙄Quit being lazy and arrogant. Do some researched homework. As for gunk up airbrushes. That's beyond hilarious compared with Vallejo Model Air and Model Color guaranteed to tip dry in the nozzle ferociously without handling their finicky thinner and flow improver composition and ratios characteristics when spraying with kid gloves.
X-20 is Tamiya's enamel thinner. It is not compatible with Tamiya Acrylics. X-20A is Tamiya's acrylic thinner. Note the A suffix for A(crylic)? Similarly it is incompatible with Tamiya's Enamel paint range. Go rewatch your video and stop showing X-20A whilst referring to it as "X-20 enamel thinner". Way to confuse and misinform newbs.
as you correctly said its x20a thats the acrylic thinner but in the uk there is no tamiya x20 what we have is tamiya lacquer thinner i know from past experience you can get the x20 enamel shipped to uk but its damned expensive and as such i dont buy it or know anyone that does and thanks for pointing it out about the x20a as i forget we cant all buy the same stuff around the world and as such should remember to word stuff better cheers
@@yorkshiremanmodels You're still confused. Read what I wrote and listen to what you said, then subsequently wrote here in response. If you're confused and presenting that disinformation, the lay or wannabe modeller has no hope. It's not difficult. One just needs to know the product and pay attention in presentation. You were ascribing properties which were completely erroneous to the products mentioned and displayed. Clearly a fail on both points. I mean, how much harder is it to say X-20A and get it right than saying "X-20?" Even so, that error alone doesn't justify you compounding it by referring to the chemical composition of Tamiya XF Acrylic and Tamiya LP Lacquer as, paraphrased "really being enamels". You Tube viewers outside the UK watch the same vid -not prefixed by for parochial UK viewers only. Perhaps be mindful of that? Bottom line. Misinfo is misinfo. Locale doesn't justify it.
From your comments, it is clear that you are an intelligent and experienced modeller. We are all at different levels in the hobby. Yorkshireman is a decent and honest man that ALWAYS pre qualifies with a statement that the methods used are what He employs - from His personal experience. Never does he suggest that everyone should use the same products in the same way. He has fun, and that is the primary reason we do this.
@martinriise8806 Facts don't care. They are what they are. Note I said misinformation not disinformation in my references to his repeated and numerous erroneous assertions which mislead perpetuating mythology & ignorance. His response is to justify in order to preserve ego abetted by his fanboys. 🙄 No matter how hard they try to convince themselves & others otherwise, 0 + 0 can never = anything but 0. He needs to get it right. His own confusion in the vid is exacerbated by repropagating his fallacious nonsense to those who know no better which turn perpetuates it. Think of my helping him as the Dr. curing the spread of an infectious disease,... because I care. 🥰 Someone has to. You're welcome. No charge.
So much misinformation in this vid right from the beginning. i.e. Those two Tamiya paints you refer to at 0.48 as "enamels" are NOT enamels. No? Go look up their respective Tamiya MSDS. It's freely available online. That Tamiya Acrylic XF-7 is an acrylic resin based paint. QED. It just doesn't use a water based thinner as its carrier as Vallejo do for their polymer acrylics. That Tamiya LP-55 is a lacquer NOT an enamel. The chemistry is entirely different. I noted on a prior occasion you delete comments which don't suit your narrative. No wonder you get SFA views. Let's see if this one stays. 🙄
The main point he was making is its not a pure acrylic, though its advertised as that. Should be displayed as an acrylic lacquer so people can choose a thinner more accurately aka Mr.Hobby if Tamiya thinners aren't available. Good paint, but not a pure acrylic so bad labelling. He is talking about mixability after all
i know they are lacquers rather than enamels but i was trying to explain how they behave more like enamels than acrylics and as such should not be thinned with water as for deleting comments ect i have never ever deleted a coment or intend to and if your posting stuff swearing ect then youtube will auto remove them cheers
@@RedViking2020 1. No that wasn't the main point he was making -literally. 2. And you're wrong too. That Tamiya XF-7 bottle he showed and referred to IS an acrylic resin based paint, not a lacquer. It doesn't behave anything like an enamel. And XF acrylic's carrier isn't lacquer thinners although hobby lacquer thinners can be used with them. 3. They are advertised as exactly what they are. They were around a long time before Vallejo, MIG or AK Interactive polymer resin based acrylics using water as their carrier. 4. X-20A is its thinner. He referred to it as X-20, Tamiya's enamel thinner a mega mistake as the two are completely incompatible. He also referred to LP as an enamel inferring the same "X-20" was used for both. FFS! Clearly as clueless as you are. 5. You can't just refer to the entire GSI Creos' thinners range as "Mr.Hobby". And Creos' Lacquer thinners are prefixed Mr. Color just as Mr. Hobby prefixes their Aqueous Acrylic thinners. Creos make a range of quite different chemical composition thinner products of even more confusing nomenclature with similar incompatibility characteristics to those of Tamiya. One needs to be SPECIFIC and 100% accurate when providing information about intra-compatibility. 6. Tamiya is distributed so well world wide, "aren't available" is a straw argument. Case in point, he was holding a 250ml bottle of X-20A in his hand. Talking about "mixability" in just those instances illustrated, bottom line is that the misinformation he provided was 100% erroneous. There's no justification or defence to that. Time to place ego aside, admit that vid is full of holes, errors and misinformation indeliberate or otherwise and just do the vid again, perhaps scripted this time?
@@yorkshiremanmodels As you can read here, I neither swear nor abuse and the post was apolitical. So no. The comment referred to inquired politely two years on since you posted the vid if you had actually since built that Hobbyboss 1/35 Marder III Ausf. M (Late) you did an inbox review on. I surmised giving the answer "No" must have somehow been embarrassing to ego, as the my inquiring post mysteriously disappeared into the deleted aether. I've already elaborated elsewhere that Tamiya XF Acrylic is an acrylic like Mr. Hobby Aqueous H prefixed range are an acrylic, Tamiya LP is a lacquer the same as GSI Creos Mr. Color C prefixed range are lacquers. And let's not touch on Mr. Hobby Acrysion and what its thinner is.
@@RedViking2020 Tamiya's XF Acrylic range paints are not a "lacquer" even if they are compatible with a range of manufacturer's lacquer thinners, and they don't require lacquer thinner to thin them. They are a true acrylic resin based paint regardless Tamiya X-20A or a compatible chemistry non-lacquer thinner is the primary thinner produced & manufacturer recommended for them. That they are compatible with most brand hobby lacquer thinner is a bonus. Their MSDF is readily available. Moresoever Tamiya's XF Acrylics were around in the hobby a figurative aeon before the likes of Johnny come lately usurpers Vallejo MIG, AK Interactive et al polymer water carrier base acrylics were. Both are acrylics. Q.E.D. If is speaking on mixability, our friend needs to get his facts straight, literally. Facts don't care about intent, just accuracy. Speaking of which you can't just refer to the entire GSI Creos of thinner products as "Mr. Hobby". If you want verbose confusing nomenclature, no one tops GSI Creos. *Mr. Hobby* is Creos Aqueous thinner prefix, Creos' equivalent of X-20A. Even Creos refer to it as "water based color" despite inclusion of additional chemical solvents. No? Go check their website for the former and MSDS for the latter. *Mr. Color* is Creos lacquer thinner range offered in three different chemical compositions vs Tamiya's two. Then there's Acrysion Thinner... for Creos' water based acrylics. 🙄
For the oils, can you use odourless mineral spirit?
yes it should be fine
Great advice and I found myself agreeing with you on all points, Mr Hobby primers, oh yes but I do like AK paints both the acrylics in dropper bottles and the non acrylics in jars. Cheers mate.
i prefer the bottle ak paints but i do use both
I use Vallejo primers quite often, and they are a very good primer IF you allow them to cure. Not dry: CURE! And that will take about 48 hours. They are an acrylic polyurethane, and polyurethane needs to cure in order for it to work properly. That's how they are formulated to work. I have read that mixing them 50/50 with Quick Shine acrylic floor polish (the successor to Pledge/Future) will shorten the curing time and increase its hardness, but I've not tried that for myself.
used to use pledge a long long time ago and eventually went over to more dedicated modelling gloss when pledge was removed from sale
Agree. Vallejo aren't my favourite acrylics, but I have a rather large collection (around 100 colours, all the RLM, Panzer RAL, RAF sets) of Vallejo Model Air (90%) and Model Color (10%) from when I standardised on them a few years back, so I continue to use them. They definitely need to be permitted to evaporatively dry and cure for > 48 hours for my liking before recoating, masking or generally handling them expecting some resilience. I found that they perform best thinning with a quality medium or thinner too. After experimentation I'd never use water, even distilled. I've used Vallejo's own Thinner Medium, but I prefer and use Lifecolor Acrylic Thinner to thin them with as I find it works better than Vallejo's both in terms of laying down, adhesion and leveling, but also avoiding the dreaded airbrush nozzle tip drying. I use it with their grey primer too. Give a very satisfactory prime coat, but as you say, need to give it time to cure. I suspect Lifecolor Thinner contains a smidge of retarder in its constituency. I've started restandardising on Tamiya Acrylics with a few GSI Creos Aqueous (same thing) thrown in for good measure -I don't mind mixing for colours/ shades. Also used Tamiya Lacquers before heading to co-standardise on AK Interactive Real Color Lacquers (now a large and growing collection approaching that of my Vallejo range). Those two are my go to now, again with sizeable ranges of Tamiya Acrylics and Real Colour Interactive Lacquers. I use a range of thinners to thin them with from Real colour High Compatibility through Tamiya Lacquer thinner with and without retarder as well as X-22A, the latter confined only to the Acrylics. Problem free. Love 'em all. With the exception of Lifecolor used with their own thinner, all the water based acrylics even from the big names like AK Interactive, MIG Jimenez or Vallejo are finicky IME&O. As always the disclaimer, OMMV.
Totally agree with the Vallejo model air range but I still thin them with levelling thinner, especially the metallic. Ref your Gaahleri video; look out for Black Friday, they have massive discounts plus there are discount codes with Gary's Stuff & Nigel's Modelling Bench channels at the moment. Keep it up matey, the channel is going great!
Currently using the one shot primer from Ammo brilliant primer as you mentioned. I use Ultimate airbrush thinner for most Acrylic paint Tamiya, Mig, Vallejo find it thins them all brilliantly and clean up with Ultimate Airbrush Cleaner. Great Video very informative 👍
heard a lot of people are moving over to ultimate airbrush thinner and i have used the cleaner before and found it to be a great airbrush cleaner
Thanks so much for a great video, best one of its kind that I have seen.😊 Have come to some of the same conclusions, but also got some new ideas to try for future builds. Curious to try the Galleria matte varnish that you so highly recommended. Is that a water based product, does it need thinning for the airbrush ? Type of thinner, and air pressure ? This is a comprehensive "primer" (pardon the pun) on your favorite coatings. Thanks again, Your channel is excellent !
glad you liked it the galleria matt varnish i believe is water based as it can be thinned using water i tend to thin it with tamiya x20 as it makes it dry a bit quicker and it does need thinning for airbrushing
Thank you for sharing; For Brush Painting "old school" enamels, do you recommend we still use a Primer on the plastic?
honestly i never used to when i brush painted my models in the past using enamels and found the paint went down fine
Intresting video and subject. ....i find Humbrol from an Aersol can are fine....finish is good and dries VERY quickly
i dont use spray cans so couldnt really comment about them in the video
@yorkshiremanmodels when used with a "can gun" you get much better control over the spray can......and you dont get any paint on your finger.🤣🤣
Expensive though. Good as a primer
@@Damien-q8t lol i get paint everywhere pal not the first time a pot of paint has been spilled thats for sure lol
@beercrazy5487 i know that feeling,lol🤣🤣🤣
I could never get on with standard airbrushes. Found them too awkward to operate. This might just work for me.
going to try some fine detail this week with it to see if its better control than my usual airbrush
Nice build. It's a pity that Airfix have moulded the wrong type of canopy rail, as that type was only used on the all-clear canopy.
cheers pal didnt know that
Looks great to me. Im half way through one of these. I hope i can get mine that good.
its a cracking kit and hopefully you enjoy yours
@@yorkshiremanmodels I have just made a seccond one. Different box and scheam. Havent painted either yet though. Then i did a tiger moth and a 109. Not painted them either. Just got a bit carried awway with building.
Looks good to me YM, the weathering is probably accurate for a well used workhorse.
cheers pal
what happened to the old Airfix No 11, 'silver'? the last times I have tried it the finish was a matte grey of indeterminate finish. Is it me, or is it the paint. The best brush finish I have ever seen was Humbrol 11 from the 1960s. The thinner was almost certainly turps. Humbrol sprayed so well. Now I hate painting. Thanks for you efforts.
think humbrol changed the paints a while ago and the silver may have been one of the paints that got redone
First i love your videos, say it as it is real breath of fresh air. Now just getting back to modelling and having problems with my varnishing. so Tried humbrol and vallejo both with not brilliant success with one that i had to scarp the model completely as the gloss ruined the paint work! So just bought a new airbrush with a 0.5 needle to varnish so seen Windsor an newton before, so what is the flat you use and do you thin it with anything and what psi do you spray with? Also could you give a link for the brush pens I have knocked over my bottle of micro sol so many times. thanks North is best.
the brush pens i got from amazon and think they are around 5 quid for 3 pens the windsor newton matt varnish i thin with tamiya x20 around 60 to 40% thinner but you can use water instead but it takes longer to dry
There's something lovely and simple just using brushes.
it also saves a lot of time messing about cleaning airbrush just to change paint colour
I have one of the basic Ghaaleri airbrushes, it's by far the best airbrush I've used to date, I have managed to get very fine mottles on Luftwaffe aircraft with the .03 nozzle and needle. They are great airbrushes but I can't see me using the swallowtail one as the one I have is absolutely fine for my purposes and by the way, I'm sixty six. Thanks for another great review
i find if i polish the needle with some really fine polish the airbrush tends to spray fine details even better
A good no nonsense video. As one who suffers from cockpit anxiety could you say what was the adhesive you used. I didn't quite catch what you said on the video.
@@conradrobinson3315 I used Elmer's goes on purple dries clear glue I got it from Asda in UK but I have seen it in many places for sale It is quite cheap as well I used to use basic white glue but it wasn't very strong
Lovely work, mate! 👍👍
cheers
Barbatos Rex swears by this airbrush how it performs brilliantly really thinking of getting this after your review now. Saw it on eBay for £109.99 but without the fan cap 👍
going to try doing some fine details with it this week sorry about the late reply but i have been full of cold the last week or so and work has been hectic so gave modelling and youtube a break for a week
Aye up! I've heard the swallowtails are great! Thanks for the review... 😀
your welcome pal
Which is the Matt varnish you use and how do you thin it? TIA!
i use windsor newton matt varnish i usually thin it about 60/40 and use tamiya x20a but i have recently done it at 70/30 and though its thicker it still sprays well
Thanks mate, love the work, you’re a great help to a beginner like me!
Thanks Yorkie, I've just seen this on youtube, I'm off to poundland tomorrow, cheers mate.
its from a while ago that video and knowing uk inflation since i did it the prices will probably be higher now
I have enjoyed it, great video. I have built Mustang in 1:48 scale, have to built one in 1:72 yet. I have learned a lot and I also paint brush my models..
Glad it was helpful!
Wonderful build...
thanks
Cracking build Yorkie, just about to start mine 😉
good luck pal and hope you enjoy yours as much as i did
Excellent build! Nice kit. I built the vintage Monogram time ago.
never done the monogram version
Very nice kit build jet RCAF F-86 Sabre. Love jets.😊😁😀☺️⭐⭐💯🤗
Thanks 👍
Best so far Yorkshire.
cheers pal
The airbrush looked 'okay' but not brilliant. That compressor, well awful, mine doesn't have an expansion tank and works much better than that one. I can get fine mottles with my present airbrush with a 0.3 needle. I don't want to sound negative but that compressor is awful, thankyou for the review.
the compressor was awful pal and i couldnt believe how loud it was
Spot on, on the Swan Morten blades and handles, simply the best.
certainly my favorite
L😁😁ooks like a great kit. Thanks for not pronouncing "decals" as "deckles," as many modelers do.😁😁
yea i may say some weird stuff at times lol but i was always brought up with calling them either decals not deckles makes me cringe when my wife calls them stickers
@@yorkshiremanmodels When I made dead simple Airfix kits in school 60 years ago, they were transfers. That's still how I think of them, I have a strong dislike of anything that even hints at American English.
2:10 you should always use fresh rubbers 😉
hehe best advise for many reasons
This is my first visit to your channel and so far I am impressed, and I am only @ 7:28 into the video. It is refreshing to hear an online model maker who does the build in their own way and style, too many of the builders push their own opinions onto viewers making beginners think that their way is the only way and that their reviews and final opinions about the build quality etc is the most important opinion, and when beginners see it they can be put off from trying different techniques of their own to produce the best result for themselves, model making is a hobby (for most people) and the bottom line is that it has to be ENJOYABLE otherwise it is not worth doing. Thanks for sharing this build, excellent result and I got a couple of good tips for me to try, I am a beginner myself, at 61 years old I am just returning to the hobby after approaching a 40 year hiatus, and as you can imagine things have moved on so much from the late 1960s-70s when I gave up model making to concentrate on other stuff, and then started working on real aircraft and couldn’t find the energy or frame of mind to start again, until now that is. Thanks again for sharing, subscribed.
thanks for the comments and your right that model making should be fun i also came back to model making a few years ago after a spell away from the hobby and it was my daughter who convinced me to make youtube videos i make mistakes and show them because at the end of the day i believe in showing all the good bits and bad bits of kits including my mistakes that i make and welcome to the channel pal i hope you enjoy it
Really cool. ✈
thanks
This kit is on my wishlist. I love the F86, even more so in British, Australian and Canadian colours! Excelent build too chap!
Glad you like it!
you did a terrific job. I found the fit abysmal, and finally junked it . Dane
you can get a bad kit if the moulds for the kit are not lined up perfectly had the same kit twice before and had 1 of them so badly moulded it was a pain to do while the other exact same kit was a dream to build
Really lovely job, Yorkie. A very nice Canadair Sabre F4 in RAF markings you got there. A real cracker.👍
