I’ve gone back to 99% hand brushing lately and it’s been a fun ride. Much like when I was a kid and the hobby was nothing but joy. My Airbrush sits quiet for ages before I even remember it’s there. 😂 A good way to keep the paint from bleeding under the masking tape is shooting a thin layer of clear varnish before the colour. Works wonderfully for me! Been using mostly Revell Aqua Range lately and I love their products. Would be great to see you review these Aqua paints. Great video, lovely little Mustang (actually it’s the very next in my build line!). Cheers!
i forgot how easy thinned paint bleeds under masking when doing brush painting and thats a great tip to help stop it i use aqua range paints and find them very good and would have used one of them but i didnt have the colours needed most of my aqua range paints are modern greys for mordern jet fighters thanks for the comments
Hey- thanks for this video. I loved building models as a kid, but they looked like they were made by a kid. I just got back into it and realize that my skill-set is no better than when I was 10. 😂 I particularly need an education where it comes to painting. This really helped! Greetings from “New York-shire”
Great tips! 👍 I always soak my parts in warm soapy water for a few minutes, then rinse them well and dry them. I find the plastic takes both the glue and primer better...
it used to be something i did for every kit but have stopped doing it so much anymore i do find airfix can sometimes have a good bit of the release oil on them from production
Great job, and a I enjoy the old painting by hand, learnt some tips from you in this upload, will try out your techniques, many thanks for taking the time to share this with us, always nice to pick up tips from others. Will catch up with your other uploads too!
I have enjoyed it, great video. I have built Mustang in 1:48 scale, have to built one in 1:72 yet. I have learned a lot and I also paint brush my models..
What a cracking video.....I've been tempted to have a go at brush painting, so your tips have given me inspiration to do so. I was really worried about the metal effects, but you have shown it's possible to get a great result. Many thanks....videos like this are what the hobby is about
your welcome and its good to see its helped someone i forget how easy and quick brush painting can be compared to all the cleaning and preparing you have to do with a airbrush
Really enjoyed that, brilliant tips and tricks 👌 I e got an airfix buccaneer kit that I’ve had for about 20 years and this has given me some confidence on actually getting it built 🤓👍
I don't own an airbrush. Always brush paint with humbrol or AK acrylics using Tamiya x20 thinner. It must be very thinned and applied in several quick coats and don't over paint until it's fully dry. I never use a primer either but find humbrol 80 to be great undercoat. Then when finished buff with a cotton wool pad before applying decals. If buffed you shouldn't get silvering. Agree about that silver, it's superb.
always struggled with ak acrylics with airbrushing compared to hand painting i now tend to sand with the despiae small sanding sponges becuase the 2500 grit version is great and the sponge cleans easily with ipa
thanks for the video I've recently started in the hobby in my 30's after giving it a go as a kid but finding it frustrating, i've built three kits so far before this video and it's safe to say I was ready to pack in the hobby as every video is about using an airbrush to get the best finish but I will be using your techniques on my next built and hopefully the models turn out great
Enamels ( no brand, the ones you can buy at the paint shop) and brushes. It's 90% skills, 10% gear. I 've seen people using oils with a very nice outcome. For me, a well done weathering it really makes the difference.
cheers pal yea i have more weathering stuff ie pencils, pre made panel lines paint. ammo oilbrusher ect and i still go back time and time again to the cheap artist oils that you can mix any colour to gain multiple weathering effects
I've never used Tamiya paints. My go to are Humbrol and Vallejo. I have a real liking for Vallejo they go on so smooth. I prefer brush painting, always prime before painting. I like Vallejo primer or Humbrol spray primer. I use my wet pallete a lot which I find works for me. If I use thinners I've found humbrol or AK to be good.
tamiya paints a great for painting with a airbrush i have a wet pallet and if i am doing a lot of figure painting i use it but for large area painting i tend to just put what i need into a paint tray
I’m really enjoying your videos, having started model making again after many years. I have picked up many tips , thank you. I hand painted my first kit, and quite pleased with the results. However, I think that going forward, airbrushing is the way and I would like to ask whether you use a small electric compressor or a can system? Can you also please recommend a decent system to start with? Many thanks, Adrian
i use 2 styles of airbrushes a cordless battery type and the air compressor the cordless battery airbrush is a fantastic starter one for anyone trying airbrushing for the first time
true enamels are getting harder to find now i think and can be very smelly when using them i also think the newer true acrylics are very good paints but nothing like enamels for hard wearing
Do you recommend assembling the model mostly first? like assemble the main bits, paint, then work on small bits however appropriate , or paint then all on the little plastic bits
you can paint internal parts while on the sprue if you would like ie seats cockpit details ect i tend to build the main parts and then paint it small delicate parts i tend to put on cocktail sticks or in some small vice grip holders i have and paint them at the same time as painting the main parts and will add the small parts once the model is mostly finished
i just got my first model it was the jas 39 and it took like 2 hours to do and hour to paint and like 30 minutes to attack and paint all the rockets and i feel like modling is kind of a pain in the ass but at the end where i was painting it it seemed so worth it i might get the a 10 warthog next
What are your deciding factors on which color primer (white, gray or black) to use? And why? I’m taking a break from the tedium of trying to build wood ship models and want to try a few plastic kits for more immediate gratification.
i tend to look at what colour the kit is going to be if the overall colour is silver i will always go black primer if its a bright colour ie red or yellow i will try and do a grey primer for grey aircraft i tend to stick to black primer and then paint shade with white especially in center of panels all above is a good base to work from but if you only have 1 primer colour then go with that as it only helps a small amount having the right colour primer as the main job for primer is to give a good flat coat to spray onto that is very hardy and will accept all paints painted onto it
great video , i'm just starting modelling can you use gauzy agent on enamel paints i've been looking the Pledge product equivalent i've seen on some videos on you tube to add the gloss finish any ideas what you may recommend ?
i have used it on enamels and it has been fine i used to use pledge future polish years ago but gave up on it when it became hard to get in the uk i mostly use windsor newton for gloss and flat coats of varnish as the price for them is very good compared with other brands
@@yorkshiremanmodels Thankyou for getting back to me, I have been watching loads of videos it’s so confusing theres seems to be so many ways to paint and weather them etc, is the Windsor and newton ok on enamel paints ? Regards Peter

The best brush finish I have ever seen was Humbrol 11 from the 1960s. The thinner was almost certainly turps. Humbrol sprayed so well. Now I hate painting. Thanks for you efforts.
You can brush paint with Tamiya acrylics you’ll just need to thin em more than usual and over a layer of primer. I only hand paint tamiya paint for tool handles and small details.
A few times I could not understand the product you are recommending because of your accent. Tamiya "white or wide" glue? Do you mean medium glue? Another time, you said Winsor & Newton flat varnish. What varnish is that? Acrylic varnish? Oil varnish? WN has many types. Please be specific, thanks. I enjoyed your video and learned a lot.

Nice job. It remember me when model built was pure fun without complications.
does still happen but the more detail we get with models the more we want people to see it and not smoother it in thick paint
