Hi. Your Dad told me about your channel so I’ll be checking it out. Definitely interested in the value of solar panels and adding them to my house one day.
Awesome! Let me know if you have any questions!
UPDATE!!! (as of 12/18): Tesla has increased the Model 3 referral discount to $1500 off! Model Y is $1000, S/X/Cybertruck are $2000! Make sure you take delivery by 12/31! Use my referral too: ts.la/kimberly23427
Do the numbers change , when you’re leasing the cars from inventory Tesla associate told me it’s better to buy a brand new car versus inventory ones as the difference isn’t a lot and at tops 100-200$
I've got no experience with leasing so I'm not too sure to be honest. And in terms of that Tesla employee, we bought our Model Y in February with a $5500 inventory discount, then $1000 Cybertruck reservation discount, transferred FSD for free. Inventory was totally worth it
Why aren't some cars eligible for the 7500 rebate even though they are spec'ed the same as the ones that are?
Batteries...for the Model 3 it means it has an LG pack in it that doesn't qualify due to sourcing (and also happens to charge slower). The Model 3 that are eligible for the tax credit have Panasonic batteries that qualify (and also charge faster). Tesla produced both for a while and if you indicated that weren't eligible for the tax credit they'd match you with an LG pack.
In your example it was the exact same price and car for the demo vs unused vehicle lol
I don't quite understand their demo vehicle pricing. I think the discount should be steeper for demos personally (I like to floor it on a test drive, etc).
I just had virtual power plant pop up for me this week. My application is pending but I'm looking forward to this. Hoping to pay some of my Powerwall costs.
Thanks for this video, this is the exact explanation that I was looking for. I used your referral code for my panels and batteries thanks!
Awesome! If you don't mind me asking, what's your name? I'm always curious to follow along. Installed yet or have an install date?
@@TheMahkus David U. Everything is installed and running as of June 18th. I’ve been waiting on PTO from SCE since then.
Ah nice!! Hopefully you should have PTO soon. Used your referral points to get our universal wall connector and we love it! Thank you!!
Does it only work for new Teslas or will it work on other HOV eligible vehicles as well?
Any HOV eligible vehicle, the stickers will be the same!
I have Tesla Solar and two PW3. I can’t even charge my PW to 100%. No way I can charge my Model Y on solar. That just drives more grid consumption for my house since my PW3 would be even lower.
Are you on NEM 2? How does the true up payment look for the year? Do you get a payment from true up as well?
Yep we're on NEM 2. First year we had our system was about $250 payment for excess credits. Used a bit more the next year and got about $40 for excess credits the next year.
Might be best to figure what your solar production is during your charging time and average it out and base your amperage charging speed accordingly . In general you probably need to cut the average by half . If you had 48 amp max going to 24 maybe more appropriate. That maybe better for all things concerned with charging . Less demand and heat on the electrical devices . If you solar system is large enough you more than likely are charging on solar but probably sending a bit back to the grid . The key is limiting the amount of more expensive grid connected power Not difficult to figure out the average setting but you want a charger that can have a charger that can adjust the average . Fluctuating the charge may not be healthy for the system outside of the vehicles energy management system
I have self powered turned on, 20 percent reserve. But, when I go to Energy, if total usage was 35kwh, solar is 17kwh, battery 10kwh, grid 7kwh. Isn’t a powerwall about 13kwh? If I have 2 and set reserve to 20%, shouldn’t I have about 20kwh to use? I would expect that powerwall used 20kwh, and then grid would be at 0…
Does it obstruct the front camera of tesla?
No front camera on the Model Y. It doesn't block ultrasonic sensors on the older Model Ys either.
Your system and usage mirror ours almost exactly. We are getting ready to add 2 PW2s to our Enphase PV system with micro Inverters. I wanted PW3s but was told they are not compatible with my AC-coupled Enphase system and we don't want to wait for that capability to materialize. Our grid is very stable here in southern IL, have gas heat/range and a fireplace. Our home is a 5-year-old high-efficiency small home and my math indicates 27 kWh of ESS should be more than enough even during an outage when the sun isn't out much. Our estimated cost for 2 PW2s is just at $16K after all credit/incentives. Great info and answers all my questions. Thanks
We are getting ready to add 2 PW3s to our 12.5 Enphase PV system. Given the 30% Tax Credit and the $300 per kWh CASH REBATE (27 kWh X $300 = $9100) from my utility, I'll be OTD for about $17K. That's about $5K less than a 24kWh GENERAC generator I was initially looking at. I've crunched my numbers every way I can and the 2 PW3s and my PV system can power our small new high-efficiency villa indefinitely, with little compromise. We'll be an "ISLAND OF PEACE and SAFETY" in a sea of chaos.
That's a killer incentive from your utility! Do you have to agree to VPPs or anything to receive that incentive? You're going to love the Powerwalls. They truly are the icing on the cake for home solar generation!!
Hi, what’s your firm version? I just got a PW3, and it drops the solar production when battery is discharging. I saw you have a good solar production when it’s discharging. So wondering if my system has some issues
We're on 24.12.3. Your system might have some issues. Solar should be priority in covering the house load and then powerwall picks up the difference with no change in solar output
Are you perhaps looking for other houses with similar setups to yours to be able to digest the data and make more content? I have a 10.2k solar roof 3 with 4 batteries and 2 tesla ev’s
Nice system! I wish I could do that, but barely have enough time to make videos as it is! Will hopefully have new content out soon.
@@TheMahkus I do have a question how did u convince Tesla to give you 2 inverters, I was not able to get another, and now my system technically, Max is out at 7 kW
I asked for our system plans prior to install and double checked. All our panels are east facing, so with 12.24 kW worth of panels we needed the second inverter.
Do you know if you have two Teslas and two Tesla wall chargers would charge on sunshine work via the load sharing? One of the best videos I’ve seen on load sharing was from Derik on TH-cam but that was years ago.
At this point unfortunately Charge on Solar only works with one vehicle at a time. Pretty sure you could have the one running with regular charging settings, and the other using Charge on Solar and that would adjust via load sharing if draw was too great for the circuit
Hey, How often do you clean your solar panels?
We live in an area surrounded by farms so they get dusty every couple months. I usually get the hose out maybe 2-3 times a year when they're overly dusty and we don't have rain (it doesn't rain for most of the summer here). I don't pay to have them cleaned, though, cost of cleaning doesn't come anywhere close to what the increase in production would be.
I must have an absolutely fundamental misunderstanding even still of how this works. I put mine on Time Based because my peak price is 9am-9pm. During peak, I don't ever want it pulling from the grid unless my powerwall is below threshold (about 25%). Yet, often around 5pm, when Solar doesn't quite cover my home load, it'll pull from the grid rather than the battery. For example, incoming Solar is 3, home usage is 6. The deficit is 3, so it'll pull 1.5 from the powerwall and 1.5 from the grid, even though the powerwall is at 100% charge. Why wouldn't it pull all 3kw from the powerwall, I just don't understand.
I want an answer to this question before I install power wall
Good job!!!!!! I think 2 is best!!!
You could already do this through a third party installer. I got two PowerWall 2's back in 2021 without solar. I use them for emergency backup and time-shift my loads to draw from the batteries during peak hours since I switched to a time of use plan with my utility. I would of gotten solar if I could have but can't due to living in a townhome. The biggest drawback to a non-solar install is the cost, these things are EXPENSIVE and you don't get any tax credits/rebates with a battery only install! I hope long term to see battery costs come way down so they are more affordable for the average household. It's a really nice system to have.
The old tax credit (the one we claimed in 2021) required the Powerwalls to be only solar charged and not grid charged for 5 years to claim the credit. The updated tax credit no longer requires that - so you can claim the tax credit nowadays for a Powerwall only install. Without the solar (or with cheaper rates) the time shift of the loads only will prolong your payoff period, but I agree, I really lile having the backup protection of the Powerwalls. And for us, it pretty much keeps us completely off the grid except for during the winter!
@@TheMahkus I just had a third PowerWall added to my system this month so maybe I can get the tax credit on that install? That would be exciting! Of course if I had known that I might have opted for 2 more instead of one. I did a run time test last summer and got 16 hours with two of them. Three brings me to around 24 hours estimated in a summer outage. Of course that was without any load shedding so in a actual prolonged outage I could probably stretch longer. In winter I could probably get multiple days since I have a gas furnace.
@@samnewby9783You should definitely look into the credit!
Thanks for sharing, let me ask your opinion. My solar is 4.8kW size with one power wall. Will it be a good idea to join virtual power plant? I’ve been off the grid from the most part, including when charging my EV car.
That's a good question! All depends on your preferences and a couple different variables. Do you overproduce throughout the year? You will have to use the grid if you deplete your Powerwall during the event. We use our excess credits for that, but if you don't net export you'll pay retail rates for those kWh after the event (which are probably still cheaper than the $2/kWh they give us during an event!) If you're in an area that doesn't lose power that much, I'd say go for it! You can always set a reserve limit so you have a little bit of backup in case of an outage.
Have you considered installing a dual fuel heat pump? You can select how much gas vs electricity to use whereby using more solar power and less gas as needed. This is a common practice in Northern Colorado.
Our house is pretty new, so current HVAC system has a ways to go before we replace it. We'll definitely be going that route once it needs to be replaced!
Just got a 20.5kW + 2 Powerwall 2 system installed and now waiting for permit to operate. I had no idea this even existed. Going to set it up once our system gets turned on. Thank you!
You should be able to operate your system before PTO and it'll just keep all your production behind the meter! Charge on solar is ideal for that kind of situation actually. Or is your utility forcing you to keep it off?
I don't produce enough solar to fully charge my powerwalls but during the morning and afternoon the battery is at 100% and any excess energy goes to the grid and I don't get paid for that. Can I set a powerwall grid charge limit to say 80% so that any charge that would trickle to the grid go to my powerwalls instead?
You should be able to set a backup reserve level for the Powerwalls. If you set it higher (closer to 100% backup) it will put all your solar production into Powerwalls. It won't use the Powerwalls in that setting though. Do you run it in self powered mode or time based control? Sounds like self powered mode might be better for you. It will prioritize your house load, then charging the batteries in that mode. Only when the batteries are full and house load is covered would it start to send back to grid
After 9 months, has there been any functionality updates? Any additional feedback? Also, how about a video on charging your 3 PWs - How long does it take, average kW, etc... Seems like you use 100% overnight based on this video.
Not too much in functionality updates - they have allowed the two sliding charge level bars to be set to higher/lower percentage levels now. Still hoping they add the ability to prioritize a Powerwall charge level (ie. fill it up to 100% then start Charge on Solar) in the future. I will keep the Powerwall charging video suggestion in mind in a future video! Depends on the season but we use anywhere from 30% or so a night in winter to pretty much draining the Powerwalls during summer nights if the AC is running all night.
Thanks for the updates. Should be installing 15kW, 4 PW3 soon.
That's going to be a monster system! Congrats!
Thank you so much for sharing the information. I am considering installing 2 PW3 without solar. I live in Texas; we have free nights plan: 8PM thru 6AM, our rate is ¢0.00 With PW3 charging during the nights, and discharge during the days. We may have $0 energy bills.
Go for it!! Just make sure that the 27 kWh capacity of the two Powerwalls is enough for you to last from 6am to 8pm without needing to touch the grid. Using AC and such it'd be tough for us to do that during the summer with 3 Powerwalls. If you're thinking about it use your referral code (or mine if you need it!) and take advantage of the $500 off before it ends on April 30! Everything is refundable up until you accept designs, so might as well lock in some savings while you think about it!
Tesla recently offered me the opportunity to join its Virtual Power Plant to use my three Powerwalls in the next few months to earn (up to) ~$1,100. Each year SDGE pays me ~ 3 cents per kilowatt hour of my substantial excess production. I suspect Tesla will pay a bit more. I bet other viewers would appreciate your opinion on which is the best option. Care to opine, or make a video to explain these options?
What is the per kWh rate that the SDG&E VPP pays? For us with PG&E it's $2/kWh. Definitely worth it to discharge them whenever. Some companies do fixed rates based on storage capacity (I believe on the East Coast I've heard that more commonly). If you're a net exporter the VPP rates are generally going to be quite a bit more lucrative (for us about 40x) than the rates you get paid for excess at the yearly true up!
Appreciate it, man. You explained everything I needed to know.
Glad I could help! Let me know if there's anything you have questions about!
I charge 100% off solar also but installed my own system, not a Tesla system.
Awesome! Do you use automation to control the charging at all?
No, I just plug my Tesla in when I want to charge it. Since I drive to my shop pretty much every day and plug in when I get to around 30% - 40%, automation is not needed. My car will charge up usually by 3pm easily, and then the inverter goes dormant unless my batteries need toping off from the night before.
Hey! Thanks for sharing your experience. Wanted to ask which powerwall setting do you prefer: Full self powered, or time based control?
I run my system in self powered all year. I adjust my backup level only. Usually run 100% self powered 0% backup from about March to October, then switch it to 60% backup 40% self powered when the solar production is too low to refill my daily use from the Powerwalls. We have east facing panels and crazy high peak rates so the 60/40 split allows me to avoid peak rates and still have a backup in case of an outage. We get charged non-bypassable charges of about a nickel per kWh even though we're net exporters, so I keep it in self powered to avoid those fees as much as possible.
I keep seeing "free" power walls and solar panels on the ads here and on TV. I'm guessing that is just a sales pitch.
Yes
But there is a 30% tax credit if you pay enough in federal taxes to take advantage. You can take it (split it) over two tax years which is nice
For the most part it's a sale pitch, yep. If you keep them long enough and they reach their payoff period (for us with expensive electricity rates it's only 5 years) the system will be "free" after that. You'll get the 30% federal credit, then a little extra if you can do VPP events...so it all helps. But realistically nothing will be completely free...
Nice setup. Recommend adding a Chargehanger...
Thanks! I'll take a look
I wish there was a toggle to prioritize the powerwalls over the car or the the other way around.
Agreed! I really don't understand why they don't allow you to set Charge on Solar to start after the Powerwalls reach a set percentage
1043 for us in Mar…Your still up 2-1! Love the charge on solar too.
How big is your array and where are ya located?
12kW. Mid Atlantic ….East West setup max production is 8kW. 2 powerwalls
Always great content. Pretty sure you can get gas on good burritos as well (jk). Can you please include some of your utility company's rate plan (off-peak, mid-peak, peak, etc.)? Also are you able to analyze the cost difference from off-peak, mid-peak, and peak using the Tesla App? Finally, it would be interesting to see if the Powerwall return on energy cost for the 4pm to 9pm peak times is returning a greater value on average than the solar panels. Note: Here in So. Cal. for SCE, the 4pm to 9pm is the mid-peak for the winter period and peak for summer. Summer SCE Rates On-Peak (Weekdays Only) 4pm - 9pm 61¢ Mid-Peak (Weekends Only) 4pm - 9pm 49¢ Off-Peak 12am - 4pm 9pm - 12am 38¢
Haha! My brother made the same comment about the burritos!! I'll include our rate plan in the April update! We are on PG&E's E-TOU-D plan. Tesla doesn't break anything down in terms of cost savings during rate periods unless it's vehicle specific charging data. I'd have to figure out a way to compile the data for those periods...I'll try to do my best at some point but I can't guarantee it :)
Can you explain why you say that it is "inefficient to use the power walls to charge your vehicle". Because I look at it as I'd rather charge my car (which is my highest consumption of electricity) for free using solar. Then use the grid for my house which is significantly smaller amount of electricity. So if for instance I use 500 kWh to charge my car for the month then I could use the grid at $.34/kwh which equals $170 every month and then use my power walls as back up for the 3 times a year that the power goes out. Or I could use solar/powerwakk to charge my vehicle at a cost of $0 every month. I hear people say this and I guess I'm not understanding why it's more economically efficient to use the grid to charge the vehicles. Thanks!!
It's my understanding that PWs are AC in and AC out so effectively you're going solar (DC) to inverter (AC) then if going to Powerwall (DC) or house/vehicle (AC). If discharging from Powerwall you're taking that DC and going back to AC to charge...everyone of those conversions is losing efficiency. So if you can avoid using the battery and either using solar/grid you're skipping one extra conversion from DC to AC
@@TheMahkus The PW3 as I can tell seem to be DC-Coupled... (I found this on google)-- "DC Coupling: solar panels create direct current (DC) electricity. Powerwall 3 takes this power and stores in in a DC battery. As your home uses energy, the unit converts it to alternating current (AC) for use by your appliances and all the other devices in your home." So it seems that it goes from solar (DC) to PW3 (DC) then the PW3 inverts it to AC then to the house. So nothing lost. But I'm no electrician so I already admit that I'm probably wrong!
It's quite a letdown to hear that Powershare is limited to home backup only. I'd be more than willing to invest $70K in a Cybertruck if it allowed for energy arbitrage and participation in VPP. Without the ability to monetize the energy stored in the CT, it's hard to offset the depreciation, especially considering it will just be parked in the driveway most of the time.
I'm hoping that something will change to allow this, but I really think this is probably the utilities tying the hands of Tesla. They limit exports based on solar production, so I guess the power company is trying to guarantee you're not going to be charging somewhere else and not paying them and then selling it back at a premium rate (which is likely what I'd do). We'll likely see many more details as it releases and gets closer but it makes sense to me why it is like it is.
@@TheMahkus Could you clarify what you mean by "They already limit exports based on solar production"? Specifically, is the export limit related to the size of your 12.24 kW solar system, or does it depend on the actual energy generated by the solar panels? For instance, if your Powerwalls are fully charged by 1PM and you're using your AC during the day, resulting in no "excess" solar energy being exported to the grid, how do they determine your solar production for the day to enforce the "export limit"?
Powerwalls can be configured (or may be forced to be configured - if your transformer in your neighborhood/location is already at max capacity) to set an export limit in kW. Have read of utility companies also requiring a separate meter be installed to determine if amount of excess being sent back is more than what your panels realistically produce. This prevents someone from hooking up a generator and running it to send more back than they actually produce...basically what the Cybertruck could potentially do if you were to charge somewhere else and then dump the batteries back into the grid. What'd I'd like to see it used for is peak shaving - where it could be used during peak hours to handle the house losd (not just in an outage situation) so that all solar produced at peak could all be sent back to the grid while not having to discharge the Powerwalls during that time.
What type of system do you have? And how many powerwalls?
We have 12.24 kW in east facing panels and 3 Powerwalls!
0:56: So in a few more years, you will get a payments of like $1.25?
With the same payout rates and this year being the program minimum, I would expect this year's payment to be the lowest possible for us. We set reserves to 0% and allow the Powerwalls to go full send. Of course could opt out of events and make less, or keep some in reserve and make less - but where's the fun in that?
Where in CA do you live? I currently have solar and I want to add 2 PWs. I called PG&E to make sure that if I added PWs I would not move to NEM 3 and I was told that I would not. I do not have my electricity cut off so I do not think I'd be eligible for the PW deals.
We're in the Sacramento suburbs. Generally you can add Powerwalls without changing NEM status as long as you're not adding any inverters (solar panels I think you can add 10% or less of total system capacity without changing your status). Yep, unless you're in one of those crazy PSPS areas where they're constantly being shut off for safety you wouldn't have any current deals for PWs (you can claim the 30% federal tax credit though on Powerwalls!). You'd get $500 off with a referral (if you're not a current Tesla owner) - or loyalty points if you are. I just got an email that they're doing a giveaway too for a free Powerwall in April.
@@TheMahkus Thanks. I have never got a check for my true up. They just credit my account. I am not sure it is worth it to pay approx. 21K for 2 PWs (-30% approx. $15K) when I breakeven with my current solar set up. Of course, I do have a Tesla and I don't charge at home much because I have free super charging until the end of this year.
oh actually cpuc recently proposed something different: “Recently, the California Public Utilities Commission offered a less contentious proposal: a flat $24.15 per month fixed charge for most customers, lower $6 or $12 charges for low-income households, and lower overall rates tied to usage.” that seems way better than the initial proposal but i’d like to keep the flat fee closer to the current 10$
I'm fine (as much as I can be) with an increased flat fee - the other income based amount was ridiculously expensive and absolutely unnecessary - and would have taken away any extra income our system generates. We currently pay around $11 a month in connection fees, although I'd rather not pay more I'd understand if they increase it.
what do you think of the planned ab 205 income based monthly billing that was approved. hopefully that will be repealed.

Did you enroll in the VPP immediately after installing your Powerwalls, or did you wait for 90 days to receive an invitation from Tesla?
I signed up for the VPP after the VPP season ended in 2021 (I believe around November'ish). It was a pop up that showED up in my app after I received PTO in late October - system was installed in August of 2021
I'm glad I don't have to think about different time of use rates. My electricity all costs the same regardless of time of day, and the connection fee is a fixed daily amount. Electricity imported is around 20 cents per kWh and export is 8 cents....this makes it simple, I keep the system on self-powered and try not to import anything. The only thing I need to consider is how much reserve to keep for a blackout vs how much I use overnight....if I set the reserve too high I may reach that limit before morning and pull from the grid. Then the sun comes up and fills the battery and I end up exporting electricity which I could've used myself had I lowered the reserve. But set the reserve too low and them get a dark cloudy day, and run the risk of not charging enough to get through a long blackout.
Yep! This is somewhat of an older video of mine - I do things mostly the same but now utilize a 60% backup/40% self powered split during the low solar producing months when the Powerwalls wouldn't be refilled fully by the solar. Allows for that reserve in case some thing happens but avoids importing during our peak rates too.
I haven’t seen many people talk about usage strategy with NEM 3.0 , I have an EV and my whole home usage including EV is about 9000 kWh/yr. I am not sure if it’s worth it to get solar/battery now with NEM 3.0 … I would say my average monthly electricity cost is $210, but the loan for the solar+battery is $260/month for 7kw system with 2 batteries for 15 years. Any tips?
Usually your rates will dictate how long it takes to return your investment on your system - and that's a big part of if it's worth it. For us with PG&E it's between 5-6 years. So despite having a solar loan you're still paying towards an investment in yourself as anything past that 5-6 years is money back in your pocket you won't be paying to the electric company. Otherwise you'll keep on paying the power company year after year (and rate increase after rate increase). As long as you plan on staying at your house for as long as the return on your investment period is it'll make sense. Plus you'll be addicted once you realize having the "gas station" on your roof makes your house and EV basically vertically integrated. Then comes switching house appliances to electric to get rid of the natural gas bill!
Check back when interest rates are lower. It will make more sense then.
Does the app let you check the battery health? How is the Battery health after all the use? How long have you had the Battery?
The app doesn't have a way to check battery health - I believe if you dig into some of the API you can pull raw data - just haven't felt the need to yet. We've had our system for 2.5 years...haven't noticed them storing any less than when we had them new. Theoretically you could charge them up to full and discharge them down to 0 and see if the numbers match the 13.5 kWh usable for each Powerwall.
