I received my HL2 plus a few days ago. After watching On7off and you I’m up and running and have already had excellent audio reports! If it wasn’t for Kurt and yourself producing these videos I probably wouldn’t have biught1.Thanks Chris Gm4zji
Thanks for the video, are you running Protocol 2? What are the benefits comparing to Protocol 1? Thanks
I find the jpc a really comfortable and versatile antenna, I use it a lot combined with a 560 cm telescopic whip that allows me not to use the coil for the high bands and use it only for 40 meters. I like it so much that I also purchased the dipole version that I use a lot even from the terrace of the house with good results!
Nive video. Thanks for sharing. I have HL2 on the way
Good video, thanks for this! What M&P coax was that you're using?
Thanks for your comment. The feeder is Messi and Pauloni Ultraflex 7
Thanks, bought one. Watch the video to know if the one I received totally match this one. Thank you for this video.
You are welcome. I love this mic
Any further updates?
Sorry, I missed this! It's working just fine. I have it between the HL2 and the KPA-500. I trigger both with a simple phono lead and they both do band switching. I had to use a 6dB pad behind the HL2 and this gives me pretty much any power level I like up to 500W.
I have the same dela loop that was originaly sold my ProWhip 30 years ago, and it looks easier to assemble than yours. The two poles slide into tubes attached to the mounting plate. It is drectional as to say but the suprise is it is not side on as many think, but end to end. Great antenna for portable, I have a drive on mount with 2 inch ally pole and raise it just above my car. Don't know why I don't use it more. Verticals just seem quicker to assemble.
Thanks John. I wasn't aware of the directionality! We will look at that the next time we use it :). Ian
Nice video. What is the make of radio you using?
It's a Mission RGO One
Good to see you sticking to low power. I love my EFHW but if going portable I would use a Rybakov vertical for ease of deployment and suffer the vageries. 73 M7BLC.
@@johnnorth9355 thanks for the comment :). We generally use 50W as it is easy to run off a battery. As for ease of deployment, it takes me about 3 minutes to deploy the bandhopper on its own :)
Thanks for a great video, very nice location. I was interested to know if you get the adapters to add guy wires to the poles with the antennas? 73
@@hiltopuk hi Phil. I got it from sotabeams www.sotabeams.co.uk/multi-function-guying-kit/. You might like to get some larger rings from them too
Really enjoyed the vlog, as before. What radio is g0vgs using please? And the logging programme. Thank you Phil , Suffolk.
The radio is a Mission RGO One
@@bayamateurradiogroup Thank you. I hadn’t seen one before, clearly works well. Thank you. Phil
Great video Ian. Lovely weather - must have been a great day out. When at a great outdoor location with a super low noise floor, I guess there’s never going to be night and day differences between wire antennas - main concern for me is ease of deployment for the given location. Nice to see you all enjoying outdoor radio. 73, Tom, M7MCQ.
Loving it Tom. There is nothing as good as portable radio :)
Didn’t hear what band you were operating, but presume it was 40M? At the height of the antennas in your experimental configuration, of course both are operating NVIS. Given that the antenna were both 1/2-wave, no surprise on the similar performance. I did a similar experiment when camping in the Sierra mountains in California based on a bet from a ham friend that a resonant 40M >horizontally< configured dipole would perform better than an inverted V (in this case, one modeled after the NATO AS-2259, but cut for 40M). The dipole was strung between two trees at about 15’ (approx 4.6M); the peak of the V was the same height. Ground was granite with a shallow coarse, dry sandy soil overlay. Contact made with a station 400 miles (644km) distant, also with an NVIS antenna. Transmit power, coax, etc. the same for both tests. Results: Far end reported Rx from me one S unit stronger on the inverted V than the horizontal dipole. n6med
It's all fun and to be honest, I was surprised the EFHW did as well as it did. I remember once some time ago, we operated from Ingleborough cave mouth and we strung an 80m dipole across the valley. It looked tiny in the sky but worked a treat :). Ian
Food for thought!! thanks for the tests, the efhw should be better when the band opens/closes and of course the dipole should be good for unter Eu working. I have tried the link dipole on 40m vs an Ampro vertical again i found for dx the vertical was ok be the dipole as an inv vee with apex at 22 feet was great as stations found me weal on the Ampro. I think the Ampro is ok for limited use but you cant beat a full size aerial!!! g4lds
Nicely put together video Ian, The eagle eyed will have noticed that we changed from the Bandhopper II to the Bandhopper III but we were only active on 20 & 40m..... Most of the contacts were made on 40m. We used Ian's radio for this event so that both antenna was operated from the same radio at 50w.
Very good Ian.
Thanks Stu. I am working on the next video today.
thanks for that, both work great with a small footprint. i have the jpc-12 and will use it and find a link dipole works great. of course it will its full size non compromise. ! looking to mount the jpc-12 on my 7'' magmount on the car and playing with an adaptor to do this really for the height!
That result was just how I expected it to be on local inter g & Europe contacts, A center loaded vertical radiates like a 5/8 wave out to the horizon, Where the Slidewinder will shine is on DX Contacts, Because the Slidewinder is a ground mounted 1/4 wave that radiates at a low angle take off, Good to see it held it's own against a center loaded vertical on local/ european contacts.
Great comment. I agree but DX was hard to come by on the day. 20m was very short (I could clearly hear stations in the south of England). Brian did work a Belgian station but that was as far as we got. That said, I have worked Stateside on both aerials on CW and SSB when activating POTA. Ian
Great as always Ian, I know we both had a very chilled out day with good company and some great kit to experiment with.
Yes, extremely enjoyable and a good laugh :)
Top Job as always, nice video.
Cheers Ray :)
Very good video. Cheers Stewart
Thanks Stewart
Great comparison. I wonder what it would be like using the sectional antenna for the slidewinder? It could also be centre mounted
Difficult to do unfortunately as the JPC12 is not 3/8 thread. That said, on the tripod and with the extension mast on, it does lift the feed point and the coil considerably. Ian
Hi Guys. Bands seemed a bit dead, or maybe it is because there is not a "DX Commander" in sight . 🪔 Stewart, G3RXQ
You'll Never get Ian's Battery in your Manpack..... It's a Two Man Lift!🤫
Hi Folks, just by way of interest the Delta Loop covers 40m through to 6m and won't tune on any band at basic setup, however tunes down 1.1 with the Internal Tuner on the Kenwood TS-480 Sat. The Antenna is cheap as things go made in the town of Bolton by G4YKB Ham Radio Solutions..... Thanks for putting the Video together Ian..... Shame the bands were quiet again! Specification Loop is a Delta ( inverted triangle) Loop is supported by 2 telescopic fibre glass rods Length of each rod is approximately 11 Feet Width of top span approximately 11 Feet Connection is by PL259 Input tested up to 400 watts SSB Antenna is Omni-directional Back plate is 5mm opaque cast acrylic sheet Mounting clamps supplied are 50mm There are no serviceable or adjustable parts in the transformer housing box and all components are potted
Interesting, thanks. I’m G8VSM (an oldie!) having just regained my 1980s callsign after a gap of several decades. Now on a very steep learning curve. Live very close to you and would like to be in contact but I have given up on Facebook and Twitter and no longer have accounts. Looked at your blog but no contact details there.
Thanks for the comment. Welcome back to the hobby :) You can find my contact on qrz.com. Ian, G0VGS
Australia 🇦🇺 is 🇦🇺 watching 🇦🇺 Western Australian..nice videos
your video just disappeared I don't know why but it just stopped in the middle of it Yeah when we start to think it was kind of fun to watch
Not sure why. It is all there
But where did the rest go?
Into a box ready to build another aerial :)
I’m just ‘sat’ in a field. Sitting surely?
Ahh. I do apologise for my less than perfect English :)
I heard “set”, so I feel your English is fine. 😄
What a beautiful countryside, to set up your station in!
Good job 🇬🇧
Well tuned, looks like a nice venue to operate from. Chris M0VUE
Great video pal, hope you and Linda are keeping well and enjoying the Motorhome. Hope to catch you on the air soon mate. Ian 🙂
Thanks Ian. We are having a great time. You can follow our Motorhome adventures on Motoring Matilda :)
@@bayamateurradiogroup cheers mate I will check it out now 👍
Thanks for sharing, nice wee setup there. Tried that half wave on 20m vs a 20m vertical with radials on my recent TH-cam channel, vert won hands down. 73 zl3xdj.
Hi Brian and thanks for the comment. I would expect a vertical to outperform as a DX aerial every tie. I have used 1/4 verticals a lot, especially with raised radials and phased. They rock. the beauty of the EFHW is its portability. Throwing one end into a tree makes it useful just about everywhere. Another tool for the box ;). Ian
@@bayamateurradiogroup absolutely agree, I am now testing a 3 ele parasitic vertical long path with one driven ele and two parasitic reflectors, and getting Fantastic results. 73 zl3xdj
@@brianfields4479 Great stuff. I remember when we were on Tiree, we tried out a 4 element phased vertical array in a straight line. Awesome aerial but too narrow :). Got to love playing with wire :)
The bands have been very hard work, But you got out in the fresh air & the weather was kind to you.
Thanks for QSO. EFHW is definitely working Ian. I use one for my main wire antenna at the moment, apart from my resonant monoband end-fed halfwave made by G-Whip for 40m. 73, Dave
Just need the conditions now Dave!
Great to see you out and about, I’m still settling in to our new home and it will be some months before I have an operational QTH but I’ve been out with the KX3 and participated on the Mills On The Air and had a great time as the WX was kind. I’m just having a break from fitting skirting snd architrave boards and your the perfect relax for 1/2 hour. Aerial seems to be working great and little noise! Thanks for posting, look forward to the season ahead 73 Mike
Thanks Mike! Glad to hear you are settling in :). We have not moved for 32 years and have no plans to do so! Ian
@@bayamateurradiogroup 38 years in our previous, have to own up it was me who wanted to move!!!
Any updates on the amplifier how well has it worked for you. I'm considering purchasing the 100w version. Thanks David
I will try and do an update soon. Suffice to say the amp is superb!
Thank you for your time and efforts. I am a new sub.
I just bought the identical key for my portable rig.
Well done good video, that core is quite big :)
Hah! Yes it is but it will handle some power if needed
Done about 50 summits with my tactical pole it works well. Also being that lenght on my back pack its easier to walk through thick bushes and not catch on stuff like the old poles did.
What a great beer 🍺🍺 Belly 😀😀😀😀
Paid for in full :)
Looking forward to the review video and the Choke Balun build....Thanks for the video
As soon as I can Charlie. The balun is built and the image is at the end of the video. 6 turns followed by sic turns on the opposite side of the core.
Great video. I was searching Slidewinder videos as I am interested in getting one. I was amazed to find this from my local area. We often take the dog to Hest Bank.
Thanks for the comment. DM me on FaceBook (Ian Maude)
