The Build Room
Australia
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 10 พ.ค. 2020
Each week inside The Build Room we'll tackle various aspects of working on cars and other fun projects. Currently working on an 2020 A90 Toyota Supra and a 1976 RA23 Toyota Celica with much more to come.
Its not really a how to or training series, and I'm in no way certified so don't take it as gospel but I'll try to cover off on the issues I run into so you can learn from my many amusing mistakes tooling around in the garage.
We'll be tearing things down and building them back up including cutting, welding, painting, swapping engines, suspension, wheels and more. Sometimes it'll be a complete win and other times a massive fail - hope you'll join us on the ride.
If you want to know more go to thebuildroom.com and check it out. Thanks for stopping by!

This Is a twin turbo, I can see only one turbo.
It's a Twin-Power Turbo - just BMWs way of saying it's a twin scroll turbo, not that there's two turbos.
I have twin turbo too, 525D/ 218 ps/ N47 und I have the little turbo on the top of a big turbo. Another construction ).
You are replacing turbo as if it is 10 bucks even if it is second hand 🥴
Lol, you can get new cassettes for them but they're almost as much as a second hand turbo and I couldn't be 100% sure it would fix the issue. It was completely locked up, it wasn't something that could be serviced without new parts.
Hey great video. I don't really have the space, equipment or knoweldge on rebuilding a rack. But i bought one off ebay and while it does not leak it makes a bunch of noises and pops, and it makes that thumping noise when you turn the steeringwheel left/right very fast. I took it off my car and put the original one back on as they both seemed similarly worn The ebay seller let me keep the rack for free when i tried to return it. Since then though my rack has developed some play on the rod part and a clicking noise and starting to cause weird suspension problems. I was thinking of taking my ebay one to a rack rebuilding shop. I was wondering if the issues I mentioned would fix this rack since there is no leaking issues. Or will changing all these parts make it function like a new rack?
Are you sure the play and noises are coming from the rack and not the tie rod ends? If it's just worn out rod ends you can replace pretty easy with the rack in place. Otherwise you'd need someone to inspect your rack, it could be a bust bearing or something. Seals and bearings are fixable, damaged gears not so much.
I just got 1 identical from BIDFTA online auction for $70 US. Can't wait to get it home & use it. Great review
You'll find so many things to clean
Throw some cheap fish tank heaters in there to speed up the heating.
Good tip!
Can i replace the turbo on a 2013 528i xdrive the same exact way?
Yeah should be a very similar process however you might find clearances a bit tighter on stuff because of the front driveshafts.
@@TheBuildRoom Thank you so much for replying. I'm about to attempt this job. Any advice regarding dealing with the drive shaft. I can't find any videos on youtube regarding xdrive
@@hamburger6133 just take it slow and be ready to get your hands in tight places. You could also get yourself a copy of ISTA that has instructions so you know the correct order for things etc. Worst case you may also be able to remove an engine mount to get things out.
big help thanks mate
Glad it helped!
Laser Claning! By far the best solution for such parts. Solves all the problems that you mentioned! ...speaking out of experience after 2 years of laser cleaning. Professionally.
What do laser cleaners cost? Can they be used with any metal?
How do you clean things like carbs with so many internal pathways that light can't reach?
Wow. . .you're back and with a side kick. . .Dangerous Dave!! Where ya been?? Ah who cares, great content back in action! Yes, this looks promising for VC replacement. It would be a good choice to do so. The old VC can be used for parts, after all, you did some premium repairs to it.
Yeah mate have been struggling with time to work on the channel lately for a multitude of reasons, but am starting to get back into it - won't be weekly eps just yet but will be aiming to get back there at some point. Old VC is something i'm really on the fence with, hate the idea of cutting it up but at the same time i need a roof!
The guy with the lisp from O'Brien's could fix that door glass, just ask him 😂
Haha - yeah might take him a while!
Just found your video while searching for r34 diy and i wanted to say you did a great job. I appreciate the informative side and the on-the-job disaster resolve was great. Also nice to also see another west aussie r34 😁
Thanks man - have been hoarding parts for the '34 and just about to start a new round of vids on it. WA R34s are a rare sight for sure!
This is a great demo to show what can actually be done with budget tools, knowledge and persistence 👍
Thanks man, much appreciated!
Love the videos
That's great Chris - there'll be a manual conversion episode and some other R34 stuff coming soon so stay tuned
Great video 👍
Thanks 👍
Welcome back, you have been missed. That is a solid shell and defo not to be scrapped. I think you should build a street car out of it with a 18-RG motor , LSD etc...
Thanks Jeff - Doofa is getting an 18RG (at least until it's next incarnation) so this one is going to get something a little more special. Really want it to take over where VC has left off.
Still a beautiful car regardless of the condition it is in!
Agreed - perfect lines.
We have missed you, great video I think this car definitely needs to be saved, the more you look at it the better it looks
Thanks Fogz - overwhelming sentiment is to save it, so the question now i think its what do we do with VC - if i can find a roof from something that's decent maybe we'll do something with it.
Another excellent episode, great work Cam. I think I saw this car a couple of years ago under a waterproof cover outside a house in Lathlain. I spoke to the lady that lived there and they were in the process of moving to Vic Park I think, and were selling it, asking about $5K IIRC. I could not take it then as I was out of storage room. I think it's a better base to work from than VC IMHO. Bent box sections under the front and rubbish bonnet hinges are standard for this car as you said. How do you plan to treat the light surface rust underneath? I hope Dave has recovered OK. The old saying goes is that you have not worked on your car unless you have cut yourself and bled everywhere! Prophetic words from him at the start, quoting his blood group, and 15/32 socket is handy when you round off the 12mm nut you were trying to get off!
Hi Mitch - good to hear from you. The more i look at both cars the more this one looks like the winner. Rust wise, this one is pretty stripped to start so I'll probably throw it on the rotisserie and just have the underside, engine bay, jambs etc sandblasted back, then paint strip the big panels before some 3k epoxy - will be the on right way to justify next steps. Dave has full recovered so no compo claims! To be fair he was working with my Metrinch stuff too which is both imperial and metric so was pretty safe from rounding off things thankfully (as such he just resorted to sheering them off) 🤣
One of my subscribers told me that you picked up a parts car...... Any parts you are considering selling? Or maybe have extras of in the shed? Is the head liner any good to use as a template, or is it already in the bin? (I need head liner bows too, or at least the dimensions so I can make my own.... If you're willing to share that info obviously) SAVE THE CELICAS!
Headliner went in the trash, too ripped to be any good but i did pull the bows - could trace them onto some paper for you and send it over if you want. Coni makes ends i believe or you could 3D print. Hit me up on Facebook and I can give you a contact of someone who's previously made headliners (i bought one for VC)
@@TheBuildRoom Cheers Cam. If I know the dimensions, I think I can make some replacement bows for myself! Can't wait to see how VC 2.0 turns out!
satisfying tear down. good parts collection. love these celicas
Yeah lots on there to like - very hard decision between this one and VC.
Good to see you back Cam. This is def treasure. Lots of stuff ready to be recycled. Don’t look at it like a replacement for VC. It’s more a new project to go further than VC was able to take you. With all the ideas and learnings from VC, Stick this old dragon on the spit and do the do what you do, with us watching from a safe distance. Look very much forward to see you change the sill’s and fit flares. Also love the Supra wheels. Cheers O.
I feel like you're right there Owen, lots of opportunities here that don't make sense for VC, but plenty of options to continue on in a similar theme
Excellent working methods in the video, that man! Great guide overall, loved it! FYI, if you live in the UK (or anywhere that has regular crappy weather), strut top nuts and drop link nuts can be total bishes! (On-purpose spelling error for the more sensitive types - the sarcasm is also free, you’re welcome). Was interesting, but not surprising, to see that everything here was more or less identical to my 2019 F21 M140i.
Love the M140 - i have a F20 125i currently as a a daily and have thought about upgrading to the 140 just to get something that's practical but still has a B58. 👍
No link for compressor? I dont do car painting, but i do use mine for a little bit of everything and i woukd have been interested to know more specifics about this compressor (for home/hobbyist use)
This is the one - they come in smaller sized depending on what your needs are. sydneytools.com.au/product/chicago-hush150-silenced-150l-air-compressor
Nice cameo Dave - more fun, but more expensive. Cam has a type 😂
Tell me about it
Pleasant surprise. Good to have you back. 👍👍🍺🍺
Thanks man - felt good to finally get this one posted!
Haven't watched this yet but I know I'll like it . Good to see a new video out Cam 👍
Cheers mate - its been a long time coming!
That’s noisy
That's subjective
What size generator would it take to run this machine
Rated power is about 3.2kw for all four motors combined - not a small amount - I'm not sure how bad 15amp draw impacts that so I'd say best to ask a generator specialist.
I've got pictures of before and after carbs full rust and all I use 2 things both cheap and most people have at there house already 3 passes 30min each time comes out about 90% new looking
What
What 2 things?
yeah im not doing all that
Haha - yeah it was a bit of a mission - heaps of kms on it since now tho and not a single issue.
19:54 the image of Jay Leno, American car enthusiast and former talk show host
Hahaha - what a find! In the spirit of JDM Leno perhaps.
Can’t find the instruction.
Email me on thebuildroom@outlook.com and i'll send you a copy
Ay mate, you need to remove the bluish colored plastic sheet from the top of the cleaner's lid! Prevents scratching of lid during shipping.👍
Lol - yeah did that after the video - if you sneak a peak at the thumbnail for the vid it was gone, just wanted to ensure i didn't scratch it up first time out.
I was just wondering how the compressor is going after a few months of hard work now under your belt. Cheers
Yeah still holding up well, as a further improvement you can get better cooling on the motors if you take the plastic covers off which helps a lot.
Pinesol works amazing
Thanks - Will try that out!
I have haze on the inside projector light glass...Hkw to tackle that?
You'd have to heat the light, remove the clear plastic and access that way, or if it's just a small area you could try to get to it from the back with a sponge or something on a stick
@@TheBuildRoom Thanks. Will probably try the stick + sponge method from the back at some point.
I had a car cover on my suzuki swift turbo and it sweated everything and ruined my engine bay, never again
Yeah learnt my lesson on my old ta22. Never again for a car with good paint
Great video, so much detail. Did you have any issues with the timing chain tensioner when you owned this? I read they can be an issue on the earlier N20's.
No issues at all, but I think you either have a catastrophic failure or you don't. I still have mine and touchwood it's still going strong.
Your welds look like shit my man. I'm all for saying "I can do better than the other guy" with cars or really anything, but I think I stacked better dimes in 10th grade welding class. Hey it works 😅😂!
Looking good mate, mine is just sitting until i can afford a 1jz and gearbox.
Will be a nice combo for it when you get to it!
Hi. I'm on the edge of ordering a Vevor Ultrasonic 30 litre cleaner. I had anticipated using a degreaser in it for car and machine parts (I'm in food machinery engineering) so I was interested in you trying the different liquids. I was dubious about water on its own for greasy parts. I wondered if dishwasher powder might be better than dishwashing liquid? I realise it might be necessary to premix it, but I also wondered if it had more grease shifting power than a dishwashing liquid used by hand in a sink? It would be interesting to know if you ran another test on best cleaners to use.
yes i saw a video on the gye using cascade dishwashing pods on pistons and it even took off the heavy carbon on the pistons.he tried about 7 or 8 different cleaners and degreasers and cascade pods came in second and top pick was ZEP 505 DEGREASER im going out to bye the dishwasher pods tomorrow fo my new 10 liter amazon ultasonic cleaner.
From what I've heard you have to be careful with pods, especially on aluminium as they can have a serious staining on the surface. When it comes to steel however you can be a bit more intense.
Hi, first of all thank you so much. Im in a little trouble, i took Celica to a brake shop and they forgot to put the shims pins and i loose the all 4. i cant findt it anywhere ebay, rockauto, nothiing. Im planing on doing with steel weld and grinding. i apreciate any suggestion. Thanks again. Cheers from Mexico.
Just the shim pins, not the shims themselves? You might be able to bend up some spring steel, or look for someone wrecking a car and get the pins off that, they're no worth much as stock callipers. Lots of cars in the US that people are breaking.
Did you ever get to rebuilding the rear end the axel bearings and seals back there or is it still holding up?
Nah all still good, not putting enough power through it to cause issues I think 🤣
@@TheBuildRoomI have an axle seal leak on my RA24 and was curious to see how it’s disassembled great job showing a step by step really makes a newbie wanna take a shot at it
Did that same thing with the gaskets
Pretty sure it's by design so BWM can sell more 🤣
Hey mate recently came across your vids and loving it! Also thinking of getting a Celica ta22 or similar. Anything in particular to look out for these before buying? Also more updates on violet crumbles would be great!
Hey - great you're thinking of jumping into a 1st gen. Major thing is rust - standard spots are drip rails, bottoms of front and rear windscreen, top and bottom of doors, bottom of front fenders, front of bonnet, bottom of rear quarters, a pillar where the door hinges bolt on, spare wheel well and both of the sills. Basically anywhere there's metal. Also look for any damage to the chassis rails from accidents and look for a relatively decent interior as parts are hard to find now and quite expensive. Engines are hard to kill so usually that's just a maintenance and tuning bit. As for Violet Crumbles there's big news in the next episode that will be out in a week or two so keep an eye out.
@@TheBuildRoom Cheers mate you earned my sub! I will definitely look out for rust. Also would an engine swap be viable - have you ever thought about it? Nothing huge just a 2L turbo or something similar
@@Gunnerlol93Lots of engine swap options, of varying degrees of difficulty. Getting a TA23, RA23 or RA28 (Aus versions - US versions are RA24 and RA29) you will have an easier time on swaps as the engine bay is longer. Common options would be 18RG, BEAMS 3SGE, 3S-GTE, SR20DET, 1UZFE, 3RZ - all depends on what you want to get out of it and how much you want to spend. The old ToyMods forum is a good resource, and I will be doing some swaps to mine in the future, but haven't decided on platform yet.
@@TheBuildRoom Mate thanks! Would be epic to see one on the channel eventually!
Just recieved our r34 after having watched all your videos while waiting.. When i turned the car on i saw the aircon controller cycling through the time and was like.. " I know how to fix thatm" My son was most impressed... Thankyou so much. Now... to find the gearbox flush video...
That's awesome - glad it helped and good luck with the new purchase!
Stupid ways to fix rack and pinion, time consuming
What would you have done?
How did you know to put a towel on the wet spot?
Not my first rodeo 🤣🤣
I have to do this on my C34 stagea very soon.. Should be pretty similar i expect. Apart from less of the dash comes apart.
Good luck with it!
@@TheBuildRoom Had good luck taking it apart. Now just waiting on parts. It has the R33 separate blower tho.
Such an underrated car
Agreed - never hitting the US market meant it never really got much airtime, apart from the GTR love based on F&F franchise. It drives great for a 90s car.
