มุมมอง 21K12 ปีที่แล้ว
"The Fishless Nitrogen Cycle Part 2" In today's episode of Aquahound's Dirty Little Secrets we conclude the Fishless Nitrogen Cycle and see if Dr. Tims One and Only Live Nitrifying Bacteria really works. Enjoy!
How to Acclimate using the Drip Method
มุมมอง 31K12 ปีที่แล้ว
In this episode of AquaHound's Dirty Little Secrets I will be covering acclimation using the drip method. This method of acclimating your fish, invertebrates, and corals is a very slow but efficient way to acclimating. The drip method is by far a better way of creating a less stressful transition to your tank compared to that of the float bag method. Enjoy!

"The Fishless Nitrogen Cycle Part 1" In this episode of Aquahound's Dirty Little Secrets I will be covering one of the most least understood topic in the fish keeping hobby...The Nitrogen Cycle. This episode will be part 1 of 2 episodes as I will cover the water parameter results in each and will use Dr. Tims One and Only Live Nitrifying Bacteria to speed up the cycle.
How to Acclimate using the Float Method

"Acclimation Using the Float Method" This is the first episode of many more to come of Aquahound's Dirty Little Secrets. This show is all about using one of the two ways of properly acclimating your investments. The purpose of acclimation to take the water that aquatic life is in and match it to the water parameters and temperature of your aquarium water. Enjoy and leave a comment if I missed a...

Convict Cichlid Eggs!!!
มุมมอง 11K12 ปีที่แล้ว
My convict cichlids finally had enough and laid a pile of eggs on an open rock face in my cichlid city. A dangerous act none the less, but they will protect them at all costs. Convicts are notorious for being more productive than rabbits when it comes to makin babies.

      i know this is a old comment but i thought you might be interested to know that convict cichlids can breed with another fish called a blood parrot and the offspring is polar blue cichlids so thats why they get along there really closely related polar blue cichlids are half convicts themselfs they will cross breed so you will be getting a nice mixed gene pool dont be surprised if one of your convicts pairs off with a polar blue and starts laying eggs these are my favorite fish even though they are cheap and not sought after and breed more then i know what to do with them the way they defend there nest and cutely build there little nest in the substrate by sucking up mouthfulls of substrate and spitting it out to prepare it for the babys they are adorable and they will fight fish 20 times bigger then themselfs which makes them very brave in my opinion lots of personality i like oscars too but oscars are so huge and im worried my floor is going to collapse from the giant tank the oscar lives in

    I keep hearing something about convict being monogamous .. Quick Q&A? When convict ‘s mate-they mate for life? False!!! this is so false-coupled off possibly but wit hundreds in ex:180gal community tank- my 1yr. Experiment was a crazy Experience, most of what we hear is true, however-there are several myths floating about like #1 again-in equal sizes & numbers-with Equal female to male ratio-or paired up-they do tend to get very nasty-& pair off..however I’m 100% both jump ship/at any Convict related/enticement 100% tone down-living wit various different fish. As a Bass eats a sun fish when it’s natural predators are always present upon 🧼 soapy suds on top of the surface water Sick? Naaa just -8-convicts got nasty & rough-ending in -well/hundreds, upon hundreds & nesting, guarding whenever I see the foam..I start to look. It honestly depends on their size-but in general if you keep Convicts & dont sell them for a living-follow advice or it will be the end of keeping fish. Trust me & you need -2jack’s -2Jags, -2true giant Blood 🩸Parrot(who would never mate with any of my Convicts) & his buddy -2 red fin shark-barb-8” these two r egg devours my convicts r three different colors & personal feel -the days of the black convicts-r just long gone-with pinks/snows/blue eyes/H.Red-pointers-I achieved all three colors without any form of hybridization-as these-4-are all convicts

    Sir, what about thorichthys species, such as thorichthys maculipinnis? They are very closely related. Do they need the same temperature for general keeping? I am wondering because I saw conflicting information online. Some recommend as high as 79-82 claiming it boosts the immune system, while other as low as 72-75 in order to increase oxygen saturation.

    Yeah. This doesn't look at all correct to me.. If you did properly add the other 18 drops to bring it to 2ppm, and it's now gone down near zero (It looks like it's pretty close), then it would have converted to nitrite. It looks like that's around .25ppm now, it certainly doesn't look like zero, but it would have been much higher from a 2ppm ammonia dose (Probably near the top of the scale). So, if most of the nitrite has also converted, it would have become nitrate, but it looks like the nitrate is near zero and that couldn't happen unless you did a water change, or screwed up the testing. Did you follow the instructions properly for the nitrate test? My guess is that you didn't properly shake bottle 2, (It needs 30 seconds or more of hard shaking before you use it).

    You keep messing up using the word "Nitrite" when you mean to say "Nitrate" (or Vice Versa) making things ten times more confusing than they already are....examples are at 2:55 and 8:47. You should loop this with the correct term or your just confusing people even more. Good video otherwise!

    I've kept convicts on and off for years and just last year I bought a few, long story short, my pair had babies several times in the end only 2 survived (I let nature take its course, survival for the fittest), now I have two young males, one's bigger and he fights my catfish for territory! My other convicts died of a disease which I couldn't cure (inflamed fins, let me know if you know what that is)

    • @apaulmcdonough2170
      @apaulmcdonough2170 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      When Ammonia is eliminated and the Test reads 0.0ppm, also Nitrite reads 0.0ppm AND your NitrAte keeps slowly Rising. This is when you have a Functioning Nitrogen Cycle. If you are doing a "Fishless Cycle" you have to keep adding Ammonia until the end. Best to keep your Ammonia at 2.0ppm to produce ample Bacteria. *If you get near 4.0ppm - this will stall your cycle because TOO Much Ammonia is detrimental to the Ammonia Bacteria.* Once Fish are added and you feed them they will produce the Necessary Ammonia. YOU will lower the NitrAte Level with routinely scheduled Water Changes.

      A Paul McDonough i tested last night my ammonia is at .25 ppm and nitrite at 0 ppm

    • @apaulmcdonough2170
      @apaulmcdonough2170 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wabajack8250 1) How long have you been working on getting the Cycle started? 2) Fish in the Tank, or NO Fish? 3) Size of Tank? 4) Have you added a "Biological Additive"? 5) Are you providing the necessary Ammonia? 6) Has your Testing shown any Nitrite yet? 7) Ammonia is eliminated by being converted into Nitrite. Nitrite is eliminated by being converted into NitrAte. First the "Ammonia Bacteria" must proliferate enough to create Nitrite. The "Nitrite Bacteria" cannot begin to proliferate without an ample supply of Nitrite. Answer my questions, then I can provide you with the Correct Information.

      No, you got it alright. ;) Definitely not fully cycled. Either he didn't properly go back and dose it before the video, and converted .1 of his .2ppm ammonia into nitrite (giving the weak purple in this video), which makes most sense to me. Or he did properly do it, and it's _almost_ done, but he totally screwed up the nitrate test and didn't properly shake bottle #2, so it's reading zero when it's actually much higher.
