    The lighting was kinda bad but it was at 0 ppm and you are right about the drops. I had to go back and add the other 18 after everyone starting commenting about my mess up oops :) Thanks!

    No I was suppose to add 20 drops which I did after the video. I messed up in the video so just stick with what the bottle recommends and you will be fine.

    I don't get it - it looks totally 'not' cycled. I don't get it.

    • @nwimpney
      @nwimpney 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, you got it alright. ;) Definitely not fully cycled. Either he didn't properly go back and dose it before the video, and converted .1 of his .2ppm ammonia into nitrite (giving the weak purple in this video), which makes most sense to me. Or he did properly do it, and it's _almost_ done, but he totally screwed up the nitrate test and didn't properly shake bottle #2, so it's reading zero when it's actually much higher.

    First of all, thank you for your videos! They have been very useful as I embark on resuming the freshwater aquarium hobby after 20 years! I need advice regarding the fishless cycle and the use of Dr. Tim's nitrifying and ammonia solutions in my newly set-up 225-gallon tank! Prior to using Dr. Tim's solutions, the ammonia reading was 1.0 ppm, nitrite 0.50 ppm, and nitrate 0 ppm. The following day after using Dr. Tim's solutions, the values changed to 4.0 ppm, 0.50 ppm, and 0 ppm, respectively. The next day, the values changed to 2.0 ppm, 0 ppm, and 0 ppm, respectively. Are these changes suggestive that it is safe to introduce two or three cory catfishes? Thank you!

    Hey mate, I’ve had my new tank up running for a week I added the cycle chemicals aswell and then let it work for couple days, just put fish in on the 8th day and some cherry shrimp 🦐 they are all thriving looking well. Just wondering when you would recommend doing the first water change? A week from now or every 2 weeks? Some places say once a month. It is a 60L Fluval Flex tank. Thanks

    i dont understand, why your nitrate drops to zero? did you change the water? if theres no nitrate, no one will consume the waste given off by fish if you start putting some fish, can someone enlighten my mind.

    • @gmlasam
      @gmlasam 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Bisaya Lyrics...if you seen his API test, his Ammonia level is 0 which means the bacteria eating ammonia is doing its job because and that bacteria is producing Nitrite. But, the bacteria that is suppose to eat Nitrite is not doing its job or not enough of that Nitrite eating bacteria ( level is .25 which should be 0) which explains why his Nitrate level is 0 because that Nitrite eating bacteria produces Nitrate. When the bacteria that eats Nitrite is doing it's job, the Nitrite level will be 0 and the Nitrate will be present. GET IT??

    Question Sterling. About 1 week ago I added ammonia & Tetra Safe Start to start the cycle. I added too much ammonia, so it was high. Today, I added Dr. Tim's one and Only. Tonight I tested things. Ammonia, Nitrite & Nitrate are 0ppm. pH high at 7.8. I am going to be doing Discus fish, planted. My question is.... can the tank be cycled (fishless) so fast? I just don't believe it. Sterling, do you think I should add more ammonia for the bacteria to eat and test it again in a day or two? Hope you answer soon! LOL Thx

    Hi there could you ansewer a question, do i need to do this for plants to?
    I have my aquerium that has never been used so should i full it up first and then plant my plants and then add my fish?

  • @SoumakDutta
    @SoumakDutta 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    what happens to the Nitrate? did you do water changes? I don't quite understand that.

    • @Katkiwi25
      @Katkiwi25 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ammonia is broken down to nitrite, which inturn is broken into Nitrate which is the least toxic substance that builds up in the tank. Nitrate is then simply dealt with by doing regular water changes.

    • @SoumakDutta
      @SoumakDutta 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      what happens in nature to the nitrate?

    • @Katkiwi25
      @Katkiwi25 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All i can say is water with nitrates (slightly toxic) is poured down the drain, where it eventually reaches a treatment facility with the other wastewater and is filtered and cleaned using denitrifying microbes.
      In nature Nitrogen gas is converted to nitrate compounds by nitrogen-fixing bacteria in soil, which then becomes ammonia.
      Ammonia is converted to nitrates by nitrifying bacteria in the soil. Plants absorb nitrates from the soil and use these to build up proteins. The plant may be eaten by an animal, and its biomass used to produce animal protein. Urea and egested material is broken down by decomposers. This results in nitrogen being returned to the soil as ammonia.

    • @SoumakDutta
      @SoumakDutta 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ah i see! Thanks Kat. I have a planted tank so i'm hoping that atleast some of the nitrates will be absorbed.

    How do you k ow when the cycle is complete

    • @apaulmcdonough2170
      @apaulmcdonough2170 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      When Ammonia is eliminated and the Test reads 0.0ppm, also Nitrite reads 0.0ppm AND your NitrAte keeps slowly Rising.
      This is when you have a Functioning Nitrogen Cycle.
      If you are doing a "Fishless Cycle" you have to keep adding Ammonia until the end. Best to keep your Ammonia at 2.0ppm to produce ample Bacteria. *If you get near 4.0ppm - this will stall your cycle because TOO Much Ammonia is detrimental to the Ammonia Bacteria.*
      Once Fish are added and you feed them they will produce the Necessary Ammonia.
      YOU will lower the NitrAte Level with routinely scheduled Water Changes.

      @wabajack8250 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A Paul McDonough i tested last night my ammonia is at .25 ppm and nitrite at 0 ppm

      @@wabajack8250
      1) How long have you been working on getting the Cycle started?
      2) Fish in the Tank, or NO Fish?
      3) Size of Tank?
      4) Have you added a "Biological Additive"?
      5) Are you providing the necessary Ammonia?
      6) Has your Testing shown any Nitrite yet?
      7) Ammonia is eliminated by being converted into Nitrite. Nitrite is eliminated by being converted into NitrAte.
      First the "Ammonia Bacteria" must proliferate enough to create Nitrite.
      The "Nitrite Bacteria" cannot begin to proliferate without an ample supply of Nitrite.
      Answer my questions, then I can provide you with the Correct Information.

    you did not follow instructions on amonia bottle.youneeded to add 20 to 40 drops for a 20 gallon tank. not 2 drops. This is a good way to cycle if you do it right. This is inconclusive the way you did it.

    • @michaelshort2388

    doesnt it say that n02 is at .25 ppm you said 0ppm on your vid and you said in the last vid that you were supposed to add 1-drop per gallon of the ammonium chloride and you only added two drops in a 20 gallon tank (just saying) i think you either messed up how much you added or didnt read the directions to us right..good vid though.

    now its 4 drops of amonia per gallon

  • @nwimpney
    @nwimpney 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah. This doesn't look at all correct to me.. If you did properly add the other 18 drops to bring it to 2ppm, and it's now gone down near zero (It looks like it's pretty close), then it would have converted to nitrite. It looks like that's around .25ppm now, it certainly doesn't look like zero, but it would have been much higher from a 2ppm ammonia dose (Probably near the top of the scale).
    So, if most of the nitrite has also converted, it would have become nitrate, but it looks like the nitrate is near zero and that couldn't happen unless you did a water change, or screwed up the testing.
    Did you follow the instructions properly for the nitrate test? My guess is that you didn't properly shake bottle 2, (It needs 30 seconds or more of hard shaking before you use it).
