I just got 2 little female convicts to join my 13 inch albino Oscar in his new, huge tank, and they're doing great! I was scared he would eat them, but they're way too quick for him. I got them to help clean up the tank, since oscars are so messy, and they are amazing at it. They love all the food floating around, lol.
after a few frys they tend not to be as agressive when having their babies.Yes they chase the other fish when they get close to their babies but they dont attack to kill or hurt. The first 2 fry their gonna be real agressive but after that they tend to be much more tolerant.Hope this helps.
I've kept convicts on and off for years and just last year I bought a few, long story short, my pair had babies several times in the end only 2 survived (I let nature take its course, survival for the fittest), now I have two young males, one's bigger and he fights my catfish for territory! My other convicts died of a disease which I couldn't cure (inflamed fins, let me know if you know what that is)
i like much your video and all you explain about the cichlids, i have just one male cichlid convict black streaps , i had another lind of fishs but he kill to all of them, now i do a 10 gallons just for him ,my question is why he remove all the gravel and make a hole and he stay there ? im trying to find a same kind od him but female but how he is a bigger is no easy find it same size
I’m setting up a 40 gallon breeder tank for a pair of convicts. I see that you have a pleco in with your fish. I’ve been trying to figure out what fish I might be able to use as a clean up crew. Something that would be safe around parents and fry. I like cory catfish but I’m not sure how the convicts would react to them being in the aquarium
+Sterling Peterson (Aqua Hound) I have a beautiful long finned Male Convict and I am going to buy a nice colorful long finned female to pair with him. I am moving out all the other fish hopefully today and will have an entire 38 planted aquarium dedicated to the pair. My question is do you sell your fry to one specific lfs or multiple different stores? I know convicts breed often, so does the lfs just keep taking them or?
Sir, what about thorichthys species, such as thorichthys maculipinnis? They are very closely related. Do they need the same temperature for general keeping? I am wondering because I saw conflicting information online. Some recommend as high as 79-82 claiming it boosts the immune system, while other as low as 72-75 in order to increase oxygen saturation.
i have 2 female convicts who ive had for about 3.5 years. they tend to have their moments where they seem to fall out with each other and wont go near each other for about a day, then are back together.
Convicts are hardy as hell. One of my favorite cichlids. Second only to Oscars. As stated very easy to breed. The only cichlids I've ever had breed are a pair of convicts. And certainly the only egg layers i've ever had breed. I highly recommend them. They're not as personable as oscars (at least the ones that i've had)
nice fish there, as a personal opinion don't like mixed tank with convicts they are one of my personal favorites but they will destroy everything else in any tank great for species only tanks
Will the convicts eat their fry, should they be seperated at some point , or can they be left in the same tank continuously? Thank great video, Ill be subscribing
I love this video, reminds me of when I had Convict's. They'll breed alright, we would take then into one of our local fish store for store credit till one day the owner (half jokingly) told us that if we brought him one more convict he'd ban us for life. I think they would breed about every 3 months, about 100 fry at a time. We eventually sold the original breeding pair for around $30.00. On a side note the fry we kept started breeding once they hit the 1 inch mark. And they say rabbit's are bad. ;)
Question. I was trying to see if there’s any chance I can get a small “clean up crew,” for a pair, and I was wondering if Kuhli Loaches could possibly work. Kuhli loaches are nocturnal and hide during the day, and then at night they come out and eat, basically being out of the convicts way. Is this possible??
I agree not all fish are blood thirsty maniacs, however, the general consensus is that the Convicts are an agressive fish and should be noted that they will be harm to smaller fish and even the big ones ;)
I have mine in a 30 litre tank, they've recently laid eggs but is this sustainable in such a small environment? we had no choice we saved them from the porcelain express at a friends house :(
i have one male convict in my 66 US gallon Community aquarium which consists of 3 bala shark 1 Red tail shark 1 angel 3 diffrent african ciclids 1 sucking loach and 4 guppys which are left from cycling. it is generally a peaceful community apart from the fact the convict chases almost every fish in the tank most of the time but i dont wont to get rid of him so any ways to calm them down abit ?
as soon as i introduced the male to the famales tank... the male lost most of his color,, and started pumping his gills/flaring his gills. is this normal?
I have a convict that I'd like to breed in my 55 gallon although my tank is shared with about 6 blue crayfish that love to hide in my clay pots.. Would the fry be in danger of getting eaten?
Heyyy bunny here💙🐰💙 but why do you keep an oscar with them.. can they go together???? I have a 220L sand tank cycling for a pair so yah now I'm waiting! Thats a very cool video btw .. new subscriber here! ✌🏻🌻 Bunny out💙🐰💙
I believe you cannot stop the circle of life with these little horn puppets. The only way would be to seperate them or just own the same sex of the species. Best of Luck!
I noticed there is a pim pictus cat in there I have 2 convicts one of each sex one angel 2 malawis one Malawi's killed the third after some serious time together weird 2 silver sharks one multi synodontis 3 plecs that's it any recommends should all these be OK? They seem to be so far
i know this is a old comment but i thought you might be interested to know that convict cichlids can breed with another fish called a blood parrot and the offspring is polar blue cichlids so thats why they get along there really closely related polar blue cichlids are half convicts themselfs they will cross breed so you will be getting a nice mixed gene pool dont be surprised if one of your convicts pairs off with a polar blue and starts laying eggs these are my favorite fish even though they are cheap and not sought after and breed more then i know what to do with them the way they defend there nest and cutely build there little nest in the substrate by sucking up mouthfulls of substrate and spitting it out to prepare it for the babys they are adorable and they will fight fish 20 times bigger then themselfs which makes them very brave in my opinion lots of personality i like oscars too but oscars are so huge and im worried my floor is going to collapse from the giant tank the oscar lives in
My mating pair wont stop by time the babies get 5 weeks old, they are ready for another round of fry unfortunately around the same time the now 5 week old are getting eating by their parents is this common
Hey man I have 10 new Convicts. I have in my tank currently I have 3 african cichlids 1 rainbow shark 5 regular goldfish and sailfin molly 2 tetras and 10 new convicts i got from a guy free and about half of them are baby and are about a 0.75 of an inch i have the kind you have but the biggets ones are the black striped ones and I only have a 1 inch pink or white conict and also half of the babies are black striped convict and are white convict and I have a 55 gallon tank is good for babies
Thank you very much for the information, it is very useful, I am planning to get these fish for my new fish tank, what is the minimum size tank that is required for them?
ohh and i dont mean to bomb your vid like this but ill say another thing. The male convict doesnt hang around much after the 3rd or 4th fry.I have 3 female and one male and before the fry get any real size he leaves them and starts another fry with one of the other convicts.I find jewels are much more agressive when they have fry, they take just about half the tank. But this is only their 2nd fry.All mine are about 3 inches.Right now i have 4 convicts,1m/3f 3 jewels,1m2f.....and 3 yellow labs1m2f...and U might not believe this but all 3 sets of fish are having fry at the same time in a 60g tank. The convicts and the jewels usually have them a week apart like this time, the lab is holding hers in her mouth as we speak.Imma make a video of them when they spit them out and yu can see them clearly. This was the best convict vid ive seen yet on youtube.GJ.
Thanks for the comment hombre and convicts seem to be most aggressive when it comes to the baby making process. Afterwards they are great parentals like you stated.
O the ol green pair eh? They ain't cheap, but if you get a good pair you might be able to make back some of that hard earned money spent those little beuties. Cheers
I would be in fear for your blue crayfish as convicts can be very aggressive towards other inhabitants in the tank when they have there fry near by. Best of luck :)
I had a male with my german blue rams and hatchet fish didnt work so good I temporarily stuck him into a 5 gallon octogon has enough room for the time my male german ram would get picked on by him and this korning found the ram dead earlier I found the hatchetfish dead and whats funny is none of my original 3 fish in the tank got killed I had a ram a hatchet fish and a catfish he didnt touch them but he really likes his new tank I will buy him a gallon and a female thanks for tips wish I would have know sooner of their ogressiveness
I very much doubt it and depending on the size of the tank, territory may be an issue. Every fish has it's own personality, but try adding them at the same time so they remain one big happy family :)
Cichlids tend to be an agressive breed of fish, so I would be careful with what you add. I don't know your tank size so I can't really give any suggestions. I'm not much help here my friend so check around the internet and see what other folks are mixing together. Best of Luck!
I just got 2 small ones with nice orange and blue on the bottom, I didn’t know those were girls. I was hoping for 2 pit bull type that can tolerate a very mean green terror. But I doubt 2 small girls can take the abuse. We’ll see
+Randy Cox actually i have added it in the tank and they r going well together.please check my video out.my english is weak so sorry for that.please like and subcribe.
Could I mix other cichlid whit my Black Convict Cichlid like: Kenyi African Cichlid Electric Yellow Labidochromis Bumblebee African Cichlid Acei Cichlid Albino Tiger Oscar Cichlid Blood Red Parrot Cichlid Tiger Oscar Cichlid Jewel Cichlid Jack Dempsey Cichlid Red Oscar Cichlid Red Devil Childhood
one of the best videos on youtube
Wow so freaking neat! I am loving this vid. I'm a new convict owner and aquarium builder. Ty for this info!
One of the easiest fish to get, keep and one of the best looking and most enjoyable personalities.
dont usually like or comment but ill do both, great video. nicely relayed information
Thank you for heads up. I was considering a pair for a 35 gallon tank. That is more frye than I can handle.
Thank You! Very good information, you have nice convict cichlid fish.
Awesome info! Just purchased 2 in my tank and i love them
Most wonderful information with most beautiful video :)
Best video I've found on convicts!

Best video out there on convicts
Awesome video!
Well thanks I will message you if I get the urge to make another iN-dEPTH. Tanks!!!
Nice job on this video. Your personal experience with them and explanation is very informative. Thanks
You should make a fire mouth care guide too! please.
I've kept convicts on and off for years and just last year I bought a few, long story short, my pair had babies several times in the end only 2 survived (I let nature take its course, survival for the fittest), now I have two young males, one's bigger and he fights my catfish for territory! im trying to find a same kind od him but female but how he is a bigger is no easy find it same size
convinced me to get these convicts doing my research first
Very rewarding fish to breed but would only keep them with bottom feeders when breeding or get large tank
Very informative thank you.
Very very useful, ours have just spawned!!! Lol, then we thought they were eating them!!!
Great video
I’m setting up a 40 gallon breeder tank for a pair of convicts. I see that you have a pleco in with your fish. I’ve been trying to figure out what fish I might be able to use as a clean up crew. Very nice fish you have and great info, it got a thumbs up and a subscribe.
What do you usually do with your extra fry?
I grew them out and gave them to the local fish store ☺

Cool video! My pair just bred for the first time this month. At what stage should I remove the fry?
Nice. Read the same thing on google earlier only difference is this is like reading a picture book.

Nice video, mine got swimming fry a day or 2 ago, when/what do you do when they get bigger, can i just leavm in tank?
I need more help in telling the difference in male and female especially when they're young?
Please help 🙏

that firemouth is looking for a fight.
thank you, for a good video. can you tell me what PH, suits this fish ? What is your PH ?

O I know what you mean with the local fish store story. Had a similar running with that myself haha. Tanks and glad you enjoyed!

Yes! I have a Yo Yo Loach with my convicts and they get along fine
i have 8 baby convicts in a tank now , will they all fight if they breed?
Do both males and females dig pits in preparation for egg laying?
I agree not all fish are blood thirsty maniacs, however, the general consensus is that the Convicts are an agressive fish and should be noted that they will be harm to smaller fish and even the big ones ;)

They are great fish
how many gallons is this tank?
cool video I subbed
Why did you say they should be kept on their own but there’s different types of cichlids in the tank
I would be in fear for your blue crayfish as convicts can be very aggressive towards other inhabitants in the tank when they have there fry near by. Best of luck :)
Thanks!
I give them to my Local Fish Store :)
he could be a honduran red point their similar to convict cichlids but little less agressive and more colorful
when do they get there color
I had a male with my german blue rams and hatchet fish didnt work so good I temporarily stuck him into a 5 gallon octogon has enough room for the time my male german ram would get picked on by him and this korning found the ram dead earlier I found the hatchetfish dead and whats funny is none of my original 3 fish in the tank got killed I had a ram a hatchet fish and a catfish he didnt touch them but he really likes his new tank I will buy him a gallon and a female thanks for tips wish I would have know sooner of their ogressiveness
That oscars gonna eat those convicts when it gets bigger
a full grown oscar would have a GREAT difficulty eating a full grown convict. I've bred BOTH in the SAME tank
it is allready near to fit it in its mouth lol ... he is underating the appetite of the oscar xD
Yeah nothin like a little protein snack for the oscar!
Agreed!
I love my cichlids I have 140 of them!! 😂😂
@Curt Jackson yep
how about a indepth jack dempsey
@ JD Smith. None in a 5 gallon. That is too small. Keep some shrimp or a few guppies in your 5 gallon.
I need that driftwood
Is that right??
and great upload
Tanks boss!
Holy shit they can take on oscar that size lol
can they mix w oscar and red parrot
If I put a female convict with 2 angelfish would they fight ???
I very much doubt it and depending on the size of the tank, territory may be an issue. Every fish has it's own personality, but try adding them at the same time so they remain one big happy family :)
k thanks:) one more question could i keep any other cichlid with them.

Convicts will kill angelfish they are much to aggressive for angels.
I just got 2 small ones with nice orange and blue on the bottom, I didn’t know those were girls. I was hoping for 2 pit bull type that can tolerate a very mean green terror. But I doubt 2 small girls can take the abuse. We’ll see
