    I have only flown into Milan to visit northern Italty, so I cannot really speak to Milan. I love Rome for its people, for its food, its history, its beauty. I love to walk in Rome. My language study there was awesome. I lost my phone there, I got lost (which made for more walking than anticipated but great adventure). My friendship with my hostess in whose home I stayed helped my language skill. She has a generous heart. I have been back to see her once and will go again next autumn. Italia, qui vengo!

    Grazie mille per questo video fantastico! Like others in the comments i too would like to learn and see a video about Italian migration within the country over the past 100yrs. I have only been to Roma for 1 week but it was easy to tell the people there were very genuine. After being born/raised in the northeast US, the gogogo of work I am done with and rather live in a city that values time and a little slower pace, so I'd vote Roma. 🎉 That cafe/restaurant/take out late in you video, I went to it or one like it with coworkers for lunch ... it was like organized chaos (not a bad thing just a saying) when ordering, which was very easy to get used to in my opinion.

    Allow me, but on some things I totally disagree, some contradictory. You say that Rome was an insignificant village of less than 200 thousand inhabitants, which is true the second but not the first statement, Rome has always or almost always been the capital of something until 1871, it is the city that in any case from the Renaissance onwards has seen the work of the best artists of the peninsula, who have given us the city that is today and we are talking about Michelangelo, Raphael, Bramante, Pietro and Gianlorenzo Bernini, Francesco Borromini, Caravaggio, Nicola Salvi to name a few. From the unification onwards Rome has had, like Milan, an immense immigration from other regions of Italy first and from other nations later, otherwise it would not be explained how it went from 170 thousand inhabitants to 3 million in less than a hundred years. Even Rome, like Milan, has lost its dialect, leaving room for ''slang'' (an accent derived from it), and even that life in Rome is more relaxed is something to be demonstrated in a city with unbearable levels of traffic and public transport bordering on decency. I don't know about you, but in Rome I only hear people swearing.

    • @HowtoItaly-2004
      @HowtoItaly-2004 18 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      First of all, thanks for your comment. Let me answer point by point, but first I just want to make you think that this is a youtube video made, mostly, for foreigners. It is not a peer reviewed paper. So, sometimes, you have to emphatize concepts. Exactly for this reason, you have to understand that, of course, Rome was small but not Insignificant. I was emphatizing. And, yes, Rome has always been the capital of something but, I insist, in many aspects the city was backwards compared to other Italian cities. It is true that also Rome had a massive migration, I am myself a prof of that since part of my family originally comes from Abruzzo and Calabria, but the emigration was and still is different from the one to Milan and the North in general. What you said about the dialect is something i completely disagree with. Yes, my 93 years old 7 generations roman nonna does speak different from me, but not that much. Roman dialect is still very recognizable even in younger generations. You call it an accent and not a dialect just because, like Marchigiano or Umbro is a dialect of central Italy closely related to Florentine, this is why you just hear the "accent". If the standard italian was veneto, Roman dialect would be a dialect. In Milan the situation is completely different. An entire dialect has nearly been completely lost.

    From Lombardy, more precisely 35 km from Piazza del Duomo 😉 What you say is true, but I would add that, concerning the view, it is very flat on three sides - West, South and East - but, on fine days, looking to the North from Milan, we have a lovely view of the Alps, with Monte Rosa in the North-West and Resegone (Lecco) in the North-East. Concerning the dialect, as you say, in the city itself few people still speak Milanese, but if you go to the smaller towns in what is now called the Metropolitan City (former Province) of Milan, people still speak “rural” versions of Milanese, alternating with Standard Italian depending on the person they are speaking with. Concerning work, again you are right. If a person has the right qualifications, it is not difficult to find work in Milan. My grandson graduated from the prestigious Milan Polytechnic in September and he has already found work with a Milan-based German software company. Similarly, in the hospital where my daughter works, she is training (as nurses) three girls from Foggia, Bari and Taranto.

    I love Milan for the Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio (older than Maria Maggiore in Rome), the Duomo (where Augustine was baptized) and La Scala, the greatest opera house in the world (and I attended an opera there as recently as 2019). I love the unique Ambrosian chant of the Archdiocese of Milan, and back in 1978 I spent two weeks in the Biblioteca ambrosiana studying those chants. I love the Last Supper, though an experimental technique shortened the lifespan of the work. The city has an energy and an optimism that continually recreates "the miracle of Milan." But Rome! Half the cultural treasures of the world are in Italy, and half of those are in Rome. A whole country is contained within the city-limits: the Vatican City State. Things ancient, medieval, renaissance, baroque, neo-classical and modern co-exist in the larger urban space, not divided into zones. Government offices and the bureaucracy are there, but also a culture of learning with both pontifical and secular universities, a vibrant publishing industry and bookstores, unsurpassable restaurants and serious musical life with the Gonfalone concert series in various acoustic spaces, the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in the new Park of Music, and the under-apprciated Rome opera (where I pagliacci premiered in 1892 and Tosca in 1900). Though the Roman people have moved from the center city to the suburbs, many of them return on Holy Thursday each year when all the historic parish churches reopen with decorated altars of the Blessed Sacrament. On that one night the streets are filled not with tourists but with Romans, who try to make a visit to as many churches as possible during the time available. On that one night the true spirit of the Roman people manifests itself. Every Holy Thursday my spirit is in Rome with the Romans.

    Years ago, I went to Charleston, South Carolina for a week because I had heard that it was a nice city to visit. While I was there, one of the things I learned was that, after the Civil War ended, the formerly Confederate South was bankrupt. The northeast U.S., on the other hand, was doing well economically. In the late 1800's and early 1900's, something called "urban renewal" was very popular in the U.S. Old buildings were torn down and replaced by larger and more modern structures. This was probably the dawn of the skyscraper. However, a poor city like Charleston could not afford to do that because the economy in the South was still in bad shape at that time. Guess what now attracts millions of tourists to Charleston every year? The history and historic buildings that remain there because the city couldn't afford to do urban renewal when it was popular. It really is a beautiful city, and tours are everywhere. It's a great place to learn about American history, and homeowners living in the historic center are bound by strict regulations when it comes to renovating or even painting their home. I mention this because it seems like there is a similar parallel between Rome and Milan. Milan might be an economic powerhouse and a great place to find a career, but there probably aren't many skyscraper tours around the city. Rome, on the other hand, has held onto its priceless history, and that is what tourists and pilgrims are drawn to seeing. Wealth and modernity seem to go hand in hand. I'm not saying that those things are bad because the Italian government probably depends heavily on the taxes it collects from the Milanese economy. However, modernity often seems to push ancient history aside. For those of us interested in that history, it comes with a cost.

      But the "historical center" of Milan is still there including some buildings going back to Roman times, as "the bible priest" mentions in his comment: Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio, Duomo (the largest Gothic cathedral in Italy), La Scala (1776, an interesting year ;-) ), Biblioteca ambrosiana, and Santa Maria delle Grazie, with Leonardo's Last Supper. I would add the Castle (Castello Sfrozesco) that goes back to Medieval Times, which is why its name recalls the Sforzas, who, after the Viscontis, were the last Dukes of independent Milan. Other historical cities that can be reached easily from Milan are Turin, to the West, and Verona and Venice to the East, while in the region of Lombardy itself there are several cities of historical interest at about 1 hour's distance by train: Como, with its lake, Pavia with its Certosa, Bergamo, with its Città alta, and Brescia, with its nearby lakes. A bit farther to the South-East, we have Cremona, the home town of Stradivarius, with museums dedicated specifically to violins and a high brick bell tower (Torrazzo), and Mantua, which was a really important Renaissance city ruled by the Gonzaga family and so it is full of buildings and palaces (Palazzo Ducale, Palazzo Te), decorated with frescoes. Going back to the modern buildings of Milan, they are mostly outside of the limits of the "historical center", which are still recognizable, so it would be wrong to think of Milan as an exclusively modern city.

      @@FrancescoRossi-q4s Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I believe the Duomo di Milano is arguably the most beautiful church in the world, especially as it appears from the outside. Many of the churches in Rome are much more beautiful on the inside than they appear as you approach them. However, the exterior of the Milan Duomo is spectacular, and I think it's even more beautiful than St. Peter's is from the outside. It also looks like a church that could only be built by a city with a lot of wealth. 🙂

      Keeping in mind that Switzerland south of the Alps, in particular the Canton of Ticino (Lugano, Locarno, Bellinzona) is and always has been Italian-speaking, i.e. the Italian language is the primary language, while German, French and English are taught as foreign languages. Italian-speaking people from Ticino also emigrated to the USA, for example to California, where they made "Swiss" cheeses and dairy products and were also involved in wine production. // On a more serious level (DNA, etc.), this is perfectly true if by "Swiss" you mean Central/Western European and if by "Roman" you mean "Ancient Roman" as representative of the Italic populations. // The (Southern) Ticinese dialect is very close to Milanese and on the Internet you can find videos of a show called "Frontaliers" in which the actors talk in a mix of Italian, Lombard and Ticinese, which is really funny if you understand these languages. The show is about the interactions between the Swiss border guards and people coming into Switzerland from Italy and they focus on all the stereotypes. However, it is the Swiss guards who speak more fuently in Lombard dialect and have difficulty with Italian. // Lastly, and I think Prof. Luca will agree with me, the present-day population of Rome is very mixed and, since Rome became the capital of Italy, many people moved to Rome from all parts of Italy, so the descendants of people from Lazio are probably a minority. In this respect, Rome is similar to Milan but, as mentioned in the video, while people coming to Milan find work mainly in the private sector, in Rome the public sector is dominant.

Concerning design, my Sicilian grand-daughter-in-law is an industrial designer in the kitchen furniture business and she works regularly in places like India, South Africa and London, because they want an "Italian touch". Also, in the automotive industry, I believe that about 30% of the components of German cars are "made in Italy", for example Brembo brakes which are made near where I live in the province of Bergamo.

      PS. Concerning Brembo, its name derives from the name of the river Brembo, which flows into the river Adda, which then lows into the river Po, and finally into the Adriatic Sea. The river Brembo is very short but the strong flow of water was harnessed centuries ago for industrial purposes, as with many similar rivers in the provinces of Bergamo and Brescia (which for centuries belonged to the Republic of Venice and produced, among other things, swords, suits of armor, helmets, etc.). Another industrial company well known to people in the USA is Beretta, which produces the pistol known as the Wop9 (Beretta M9) used by the US Military. This company is located in a similar valley called Val Trompia, in the province of Brescia.

    For god's sake, the last thing Italy needs is a right-wing con man eager to colonize and export his development model and capitalistic work organization, dictating his rules and pressuring governments to embrace his point of view even about social issues like demographics and sexual orientation choices. Take a look around the web and see the trail of failed enterprises and defrauded investors he left behind, along with the considerable amount of work force hired, exploited and then nonchalantly dismissed at will without notice. And also his recent (and instrumental) endorsement of a totalitarian, arrogant, ignorant (as well as convicted) american president sharing the same hypertrophic ego, speaks volumes about the rule-dictating, billionaire-gang-up style we can expect from his business model once stretched over Italy. Well, you did a quite good job of explaining why. It makes sense because he is an astute person, right. I mean Italy has the greatest PM in the world(ask Elon), great cuisine, great automotive, great fashion, great history that Unesco reports to possess over 60% of all the important art, achitecture, and statues, in the whole world. It also has Immense influence of Western civilization and culture. It has Immense natural beauty, Immense palaces galore, great hotels galore, and can cater the best of everything to those who have alot of money, like say Elon Musk. It has the Catholic Church(I know it's a "separate" country), and Italy's birth rate is very low, which is right at the top of his issues. So, yes, Elon should and does have an interest in these. It seems just natural.

      @HowtoItaly-2004 Does it seem that way to you? I guess obviously so. But I see it differently. I think if you are talking about through the lens of the mainstream media for decades, then certainly yes. If you are not looking throught the 'filter' of media, the story is quite different actually, with only the facts. Especially in the last years. If you believe Italy's lack of geopolitical influence makes no sense to you, given the evidence, you're right. But as with anything, what actually makes sense, eventually comes to be. I factually see that happening in the last years, but if you see it differently, I do understand why. Let me give you just one of several examples, that got very 'low' media coverage, and not accurately either. Why did Viktor Orban sign on with the E.U. to send many Billions of dollars aimed at 'destroying' Russia, and his 'great friend' Putin? Giorgia Meloni and Italy, is why, and Only that, because he nearly dispises Nato, the E.U., and the U.S. Yet he chose to side with Italy, against Russia, and essentially China, etc, too?? Yes. It's fact.
