The Lord Ruler | Mistborn Lore
The Lord Ruler is an enigma of a man. Near the beginning of my channel, I made a video in defence of the Lord Ruler. Was he as much of an evil man as people assume? Or was he more of a ruthless utilitarian caught between a series of difficult choices and power he could barely comprehend, let alone use effectively.
While I won’t rehash that discussion here, I did feel it was prudent for us to examine the man behind the title. It’s worth recapping and looking at what we know about this man who once ruled a planet and had an entire religion dedicated to him. Who was the Lord Ruler? What do we know about him and his history?
It should go without saying that there will be spoilers for the first Mistborn trilogy in this video - at least concerning the Lord Ruler, his past, and his identity.

How To Deal With Worldbuilder's Disease | Writing & Worldbuilding
มุมมอง 1.7Kปีที่แล้ว
Worldbuilding is one of those elements in fiction that is unique to sci-fi & fantasy and its many subgenres. And for many of us, it is what initially draws us in to the genre. Some people get drawn in because of the worldbuilding of some other author’s story. Others simply get drawn in at the prospect of worldbuilding their own setting for a story they want to tell. And while I would definitely...
The Stormlight Archive & The Murky Morality Of Colonialism | Philosophy Of The Stormlight Archive

Is Colonialism evil? It’s a loaded question that requires quite a bit of unpacking. And this is the internet, so directly talking about a topic like this will probably result in a hate-mob knocking at my door. That is unless I look at the question through the prism of allegory, metaphor, or story. So let’s do just that! The Stormlight Archive, despite not yet being finished, is probably my top ...
How South Park Exemplifies Free Speech | Raven's Rants

In today's video we discuss the concept of Free Speech through the lense of South Park. Do we allow freedom of speech, but at the same time the freedom to offend? Through looking at how South Park tackles free speech, we can h...
Outline Vs Discovery Writing | Writing & Worldbuilding

Writing. It seems so simple, in theory. Just think up a story then put words on paper, right? Oh if only it were that easy. Oh sure you could just do that, but in all likelihood, you’d end up having to start over anyway. You see, there are actually different approaches to how one can go about writing a novel. These approaches are all on a sliding scale, but there are two main styles of writing ...

What is a man? Or more specifically, what does it mean to be a man? What must one do in order to become a man? These are questions that have plagued young boys and men for millennia. These are questions that have never been given a universal answer and I doubt that they ever will. W...

Freedom is a word that means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Some see it as the ultimate liberating force. For many readers, the first sentence may not seem to be the most important part of the book. But readers generally don’t know how the sausage is made. Willshapers can use spiritual cohesion to combine the physical realm with the spiritual realm and thus teleport. Jasnah (Elsecaller) used transportation in the city of Thaylenah Battle. She transported her soulcasting to others. It was incredibly impactful. Lightweavers can "substantiate" their illusions into near-real objects, which are nearly as sharp and deadly as a shardblade. They can materialize weapons at will from behind their opponents, making them extremely unpredictable. They could soulcast a wall behind their opponent, then use hard light to slam them into the wall, or stab them from below or behind. Dustbringers can ignite the air. They can use abrasion to make things more abrasive and rough. Dustbringers rock.

In all of my amateur, never to be published fiction. The same first line always appears "It's not easy, being the daughter of a Goddess". I suppose the limits of my writing are exposed by never coming up with a second sentence, to rival that. The first sentence opens the door. The second sentence shows you what is behind it. I peaked with the door. Oh Dear.

I'm fine with the traditional fantasy races as long as you do something unique with them. Like how an elf from skyrim will differ from an elf from dragonage. They may both be immortal, pointed eared humans but their history and motivations bring you to two different conclusions about them.

I'm with you on this one. Hrathen was easily my favorite character, and I found myself enjoying the scenes that he was in more than any others. Hearing his thoughts made me feel the tension, the disillusionment, the struggle, and the determination that comprised his character. Raoden and Sarene have their own journeys and arcs, but Hrathen's is the most poignant and visceral.

It's kinda hard to take your analysis sincerely when you repeatedly use woke and other terms to discuss the sometimes admittedly skewed viewpoints on the left when it comes to diverse casting, yet barely remark on the much more destructive and biased viewpoints that emanate from the right whenever a character (even completely original ones) are anything other than straight and white. You also barely remark on the decades of casting where traditionally POC characters are played by white actors on screen even when the characters' racial heritage is integral to their story, examples that still persist to today (from years of blackface and minstrel-portrayals in older media to more recent examples like Ancient One in Dr Strange played by Tilda Swinton, and ScarJo in Ghost In The Shell, come to mind). Your analysis tackles raceswapping of white characters for black or poc actors, even though the reverse is much more pervasive and more detrimental to storytelling and the craft of acting since black/actors already have very few roles in most popular media and any raceswapping for white actors further lessens opportunities for poc actors on screen. You barely remark on the fact that most shouts against any sort of diverse casting in Hollywood these days are indeed heavily rooted in racist, homophobic, misogynist or xenophobic sentiments and rarely actual legitimate critiques against the quality of storytelling. It's hard to accept your take as a centrist position on diverse casting if your talking points skew critical of the leftist takes and are not nearly as critical of the right-leaning positions. Just my two cents...

As someone who suffers from mental illness, he doesn't write it very well at all. Because real mental illness has the habit of rearing it's ugly head when you need it least in your life. If's not conveniently not a factor as soon as you need to perform in order for the plot to happen. Also, stuff like PTSD makes you emotionally volatile with anger issues. Yet we never see Kaladin or Dalinar or any of the other characters that have to be traumatised by the stuff they went through, irrationally lash out at random people around them. Unlike for example my granddad who fought in WW2. None of them show realistic PTSD in their social interactions. They are perpetually nice to each other at a level that is unrealistic even for totally healthy individuals. The characters are pretty much all one dimensional.

Worth noting is that these "laws" are tenets Sanderson set _for himself,_ specifically, based on what he has found works best for his own writing. They make perfect sense if you're Brandon Sanderson, and they might be handy if you want to write _like_ Brandon Sanderson or find that you have a similar style. (i.e. you _really_ like very specific hard magic systems.) But they're not going to apply to all works of fantasy, because everyone has their own taste and methods of worldbuilding and storytelling. Brandon has said as much himself, and I think it's important to clarify that when discussing this subject. Case in point, I personally have some issues with the second law, or at least parts of it: I don't like magic having costs, and I think it should be limited in terms of scope and power but not necessarily in application. My approach is to have the basic mechanics of the system be as simple as possible while allowing for maximum versatility and creativity.

Thing is, I have this nasty assumption that I can't write until the world itself is finished at least to 70-80%. Otherwise it wouldn't feel alive enough, only mere decorations, and I don't want to risk those decorations falling apart once you start looking closer. Or even worse - have some aspect of the lore be left unexplained for the time being, write for a while, then come up with a brilliant explanation for that aspect, only that it would clash with what you've had already written, so you'd have to not just edit a lot, but start completely from scratch. I want things to be logical and plausible, I want everything to make sense, to avoid plot holes.

Kelsier is deeply evil, every bit ad evil as taravangian, ruin, the lord ruler, or Rayse. He is nothing but a murdering and a egotist, caring only for himself. He never really cared for the skaa or freedom or anything. If anyone believes their is a good quality Kelsier possesses they are guaranteed, all the way, maximum level wrong. Some people mistake this because he helped overthrow the Lord Ruler and fought Ruin as well as other deeds that look good if only looked at by the deed itself. Even sacrificing himself wasnt done for good or altruistic reasons. Kelsier did everything people mistake as good merely to get revenge on the Lord Ruler and later Laras and Ruin for being the gods that made the world fucked up. Kelsier hasnt even changed sense becoming immortal. He started a group called the Ghostbloods merely because he wants power. He wants to be considered a god. He only protects Scadrial not to protect the people the way a real hero would but merely because he is purely, undoubtedly, irreparably, and irrefutably evil and thus the world is HIS and the people are HIS and so must not be harmed to taken over because only HE is allowed to do that. Its the bull shit his Ghostbloods have been up to that made organizations like the Set able to rise up as well as beings like Autonomy being able to get a foothold on Scadrial. There are some good people in the Ghostblood but they are being lied to and fooled by Kelsier. He keeps secrets from those who thinks he doesnt and has them thinking he still has power when he doesnt because his ego wont allow him to let others see themselves as more powerful than himself. He keeps all secrets from others while allowing them to have none from him. He believes HIS murders are good and justified because they must be ad HE is the one doing them. He knows he is evil and does not secretly believe he is a hero. He knows he is equally or even more evil than the Lord Ruler but is okay with that. He embraces it. He knows Roshar is about to fall and refuses to even a little bit help. Instead he wants his people to do as many evil things as possible to get what he is after as quickly as possible as only it is what he wants only that matters. If he cannot get what he wants from Roshar then he happily wants it to hurry up and fall no matter the death toll because he might be able to achive his goals more easily if everyone that could resist him is dead. If an evil Shard like Odium offered Kelsier everything he wanted but in exhange he would have to betray and kill his own Ghostbloods he wouod gleefully do so and revel and enjoy the fuck out of their shock and despair as he betrays, tortures, and then murders them. He wouldnt even allow their murder to be swift or just a death as he would also mangle their souls by ripping them apart to make Hemalurgic spikes and enjoy it extra that they die extra badly and extra painfully while they just get killed and he still gets the only part of them he sees any use or value in, their powers. Kelsier hates all people but himself and respects nobody but himself. People only have value if they produce something he can use, have skills he can use, and are instantly hated rejected when they do not. Their only purpose then is to be horrifically tortured for any useful information they have, then hideously murdered slowly and to ultimately become a spike. This is the only methods he will use as they are the ones that let gim have fun with torture and murder. For daring to not be useful enough to him to justify their not being tortured and murdered by way of becoming a spike. Its THEIR fault they are being tortured and murdered. They torture and murder thenselves. They force him to do these things to them against his will by not having done more or knowing more or being more important in a way that benefits him. Its their fsult they become spikes because they have to pay for forcing him to murder and torture them so it might as well result in them at least becoming something finally useful, a hemalurgic spike. That way at least some part of them can finally not be a total failure and waste of existence. He enjoys hurting and killing them because its his revenge against them for not just being useful right away but forcing him to against his will exert effort on forcing them to become something useful versus just being that automatically. If they cant do even that much they arent allowed to be alive. Because in their place could be a useful, not useless failure that can be of benefit to him. So endless billions just need to be tortured and killed until his goals are achieved and all thats left is a mix of people who are all at least some type of useful. Its because of this philosophy he has active via his agents on Roshar that turns Roshar against Scadrial and causes the two to war in the far future Cosmere. The reason he and Hoid hate each other so badly is because they are exactly the same and are both rwually evil and selfish. People like the Lord Ruler are the purest of heroes compared to these two as at least he did have good intentions and tried to save the world and fix the issues brought by Ruin. And even Ruin the Shard is innocent in comparison as its just a Shard forced to act as it muat per its Intent. The only being the the entire Cosmere as evil as Kelsier in all the different ways Kelsier is evil is in fact Hoid who told the people of Roshar he would willingly let Roshar fall if doing ao got gim what he wanted and kept Odium stuck there. The Rosharans NEED to suffer and die and they should not just gleefully and happily like this being done to them but WANT this to be done to them. Odium being free would make Hoid's schemes a tiny bit harder, less than a trillionth of a trillionth of a single percent harder over millennia. Their lives arent valuable enough and nor are they csred about enough or important enough to cause Hoid even that small annoyance. Its just millions and even billions eventually of useless people dying. That can never be cared about because a trillion times zero and still zero and thus thats all the consideration they are allowed to be afforded. Its their fault for not being important, powerful, knowledgeable, or valuable enough to convince him to care about them. Currently Rosharans are doing the only thing that gives them any value to either Hoid or Kelsier, and thats dying in droves and suffering to the point their minds literally break to keep Odium occupied. All of these things are irreparable, objective, and irrefutable facts that cannot be denied or even challenged to the tiniest or slightest degree by anyone who is actually saying objectively true things. Some will say otherwise but only because they want and need Kelsier or even Hoid to be good and heroes because they are fooled or they knowingly lie because they are just as bad but hide it because if tohers knew or they acted on it their lives would fall apart in the real world. So they need these two evil fucks to not be evil because that means they can believe or fool others into thinking they arent evil. But not even the slightest nugget of true evidence can be offered to refute these facts as there isnt any. The books clearly paint exactly only this precise description of these two characters and offers no other interpretation accept by those who are deluded or are purposely lying to hide their natures. Kelser needs and deserves to die but I am glad he isnt because the stories need a real villain to commit these atrocities so that we csn be entertained by them. And so a real hero like Kaladin or Wax can stop them. Or me, but Sanderson cant ever create a hero in his story as good or innocent or objective as me as that level of competence and not being flawed would be boring. Not much of a story if the hero with pathetic ease immediately finds the villain and kills them within 5 hours tops of starting the role, ya know?

Ek het so paar jaar terug Way of Kings gelees. Hierdie jaar het ek Words of Radiance en Oathbreaker gelees. Maar ek het die Graphic Audio reeks ook gekry. Dis baie goed. Ek geniet tans Rhythm of War.
