The actor who played Burke took his mother to the premiere for this film and his mother cheered when Burke got killed.

@@malhiluvu I remember a passing reference to the Sentry Guns in the theatrical version of "Aliens." The Special Edition Laserdisc(!) of 1990 was an eye opener, with the deleted scenes adding weight to James Cameron's tale.
The fact that people can't even recognize Michael Biehn Kyle Reese/Dwayne Hicks from the previously watched picture makes him even more underrated then he already is
I am such a fan of his! Ever since Terminator in 1984. I saw him in some movies before Terminator. He's in a few background scenes in Grease. He's always next to the main jock guy.
I met him twice in the late 80s. Super nice guy! Easy to talk to, best handshake ever. He's made 2 of the best Heroes in movies history and 2 of the best Bad Guys in movie history.

What makes Ellen Ripley a legitimate badass is that she's fearful and traumatized by the Aliens, but she puts herself back into the fray to confront it, and through the movie you see her overcoming it while the marines are stun locked, and SHE'S the one who takes full charge.

Not only that - they sell it. Sigourney's portrayal makes it so completely believable, you don't even question it.
Sigourney Weaver is just an amazing actress. That scene in the elevator where she mentally prepares herself to face her fears is so well acted. You can tell that she is terrified, yet she pushes those feelings away to get the job done. Just fantastic.
Hicks was Kyle Reese from Terminator and Vasquez was John Connor's foster mom.
Bishop was the detective in Terminator
Hudson was one of the punks who got killed by Arnold at the beginning of the first Terminator movie.

I get where you are coming from but telling someone that the almost universal opinion is that the rest of the Alien movies do not measure up is hardly gatekeeping.
Bill Paxton's quotes from this movie are legendary! My family still uses them to this day. "Game over man!" "What we gonna do now?!" "Thats great man, why don't we put her in charge!" Great actor(s)!

@@zombiespongebob6903 They call the longer cut Special Edition. Same with The Abyss and Terminator 2. I guess James Cameron does not want to make the theatrical versions seem inferior. In all 3 cases, I prefer the longer cuts. I feel they have a little more heart. But that's a matter of taste. Sometimes I might prefer a movie that flows better, with less time between action scenes.

Why do people keep misinterpreting what Jennifer Lawrence said? (Who am I kidding, I know why.) She didn't mean she was the first female action hero in history. She was just the first one aimed specifically at the "Young Adult" audience that loves books like Twilight, and Divergent etc. Obviously, Aliens and The Terminator were definitely not made for that audience.
When Ripley said the iconic line, "Get away from her you b***h!" I guess the whole audience cheered. I would love to have been there.
i was there. it was something to witness. The whole theater is dark and so is the movie, so you feel like you're IN the movie.
I can vouch for that. The women's cheers in the theater the night I was there , at that moment , was an incredible crescendo
I was in the theater when it was released and yes everyone cheered when she said that line coming out in the loader. It was great
not a guess, when i was there, everyone was cheering in one or the other way...
I wasn't lucky enough to have seen it at the cinema - I'm a little too young - but did see it on the small screen with sone friends who also hadn't seen it before. I can't explain in enough ways that we Brits never say "HELL YEAH!". We're just not that emotionally effusive. But that night was an exception.

Carrie Henn also befriended the actors in the alien costumes. The director was worried she would be traumatised in the scene when she was seized by an alien but apparently she had difficulty not laughing when her 'friend' surged up from the water.

I always thought that the Queen had no control over the eggs hatching. I thought they hatched when they sensed a human host nearby. CO2 or something.
Ripley was gonna honor the deal, but when that egg opened up she changed her mind like "You know what? Nah." Flame on.

Fun fact: Paul Reiser, who plays Burke, took his mom to the premiere with him. She cheered at his death. That is good acting, when someone who loves the actor hates the role so much she cheered his death.

The fact you got so invested in a MOVIE from Decades ago... shows how goo this movie is. The Extended cut had the turrets you described. The first 2 are the best but there are many others... kind of worth seeing for experience but do not get your hopes up for the "quality" of the story.

I think "Alien" is one of the greatest movies ever made, but I LOVE "Aliens". Cameron did such a fantastic job of honoring and following the original, but made a movie that was all his own. I have seen it so many times and there are so many little details; like Gorman's redemption arc when, at the end, he and Vasquez replicate Vasquez' and Drake's handshake over the grenade.

@@LiteWeightReacting The quality of movies in the franchise drops off sharply (how could it not), but it's worth continuing. I recommend the Director's Cut of Alien 3, as the theatrical cut was so badly hacked by the studio that the director (David Fincher who also made Seven, Fight Club, Gone Girl) disowned the movie and tried to have his name removed.
I can't wait to see Alien:Romulus, which takes place between Alien and Aliens on the timeline. The trailers look amazing.

@@rayward43 I honestly lost respect for the series after watching 3 and pieces of 4. They just jumped the shark. The predator crossovers were just a desperate cash grab, nothing to do with art or integrity. Like the Freddy vs Jason movie. It would take a lot for me to give them a chance again with Romulus or any newer ones.
Supposedly Paul Rieser (Burke) took his mother with him to see the premier of this movie. At his character's death she turned to him, yelling in the middle of the theater "that's what you get!!" So yes Burke is a character that not even his own mother could love.. lol
I like how the story shows where he got his sense of humor from (he was a stand-up comedian before becoming an actor).
The queen reveal is one of the best scenes in movie history. Absolutely hostoric.
The movie with the auto-turrets was THIS ONE...The Director's Cut.
Yup! Someone posted above (from my perspective) discussed some of the differences. You should definitely watch the Director's Cut, but watch the theatrical release first for sure!
IMO the only good adds to the Director's Cut are the longer hearing at the start, the auto-turrets, and "that" last scene with Burke.
@@jakeage3024I love this movie to bits, and generally prefer the extended editions (looking at you, LOTR) but I really did not care about the Director's Cut. In my opinion, it ruins the pacing, affects the suspense of the arrival at the planet and, frankly, most extra scenes are nothing to write home about. Yes, including the sentry guns. I personally prefer the TV version of Aliens that adds the "Burke tells Ripley about her daughter" scene but otherwise matches the theatrical version.
Everyone swears there are hundreds of aliens in the movie, but in fact there are only eleven shots of any aliens (not counting the queen), 10 showing only 1 alien and one shot with 3, totaling about 13 seconds of screen time. Your imagination is triggered by the motion trackers, the soldiers' cameras going staticky, and clever camera angles. Genius directing.
And Cameron had only 5 costumes for the creatures, that's why no more than five on the screen at the same time

There is a scene where dozens and dozens are mowed down by Sentry Guns, but the aliens are conveniently off-screen most of the time (only... I think 3 are actually shown), but that's not present in this version, only in the Director's Cut.

@@HistoritorJimaldus With the exception of the Queen, almost all shots of the aliens are flash-cuts that last less than a second. Several websites have timed it, and most conclude that they're on screen for between 11 and 15 seconds.
While Bishop is something of a red herring, you have to consider that he's actually with the Marines, and not the company.
Fun fact: Vasquez is also John Connor's step mom from Terminator 2. She is one of James Cameron favorite actresses. She was also the Irish mommy in Titanic. This was her first role.
Also - you can catch glimpses of Miles Dyson as one of the Marines.

‘Game over man’, and ‘get to the chopper’ were my catchphrases growing up. Then as a teen I added kindergarten cop to my repertoire with ‘who is your daddy and what does he do’ and last action hero’s ’rubber baby buggey bumpers’. Arnold was my catchphrase goldmine
This film's special edition includes a reference to Ripley's daughter, who died while she(Ripley) was drifting in space.
So, fun fact, you've seen the actress who played Vasquez before. She also played John's foster mom in Terminator 2. Apparently she thought Aliens was supposed to be a movie about illegal immigrants, or 'aliens', from south of the border, and auditioned in character, costume and all. James Cameron was so impressed with her audition that he wrote the character of Vasquez into the movie just for her.
One of the classic lines is what Ripley says to the alien queen when she is in the loader and comes out of the big door in the spaceship
The most cheer-inducing line in cinema history?
When I went to the theater to see this I hadn't yet seen the first Alien movie, so I had no idea what to expect. Needless to say, I was totally blown away! I couldn't even get out of the chair, so I had to sit and watch it again!
There's an extended version that shows someone gives them the coordinates of the alien ship, Rebecca or neut's family finds the alien ship and her dad gets the 1st face hugger😮
There's also more character development for Ripley as Burke tells her something about the time while she slept and near the end, Ripley and Hicks trade first names (a GREAT scene)! The Director's Cut is the ONLY version I watch anymore.
Also I'm not sure if it's in the directors cut or a delete scene but Ripley finds Burk's body in the hive at the end before finding Neut.
I absolutely hate the director's cut and everything about those scenes. They ruin the pacing, they are unnecessary, and to top it off, there's an extra "Newt scream," in the alien ship reveal, which for me is like fingernails on a chalkboard.
You also see Newt playing with her brother. The comic showed the more gruesome scene of Newt's brother saving his sister and sacrificing himself.
@@BlackStudies Here here! It's best those scenes are left on the cutting room floor - totally agree that they ruin the pacing. The plotline with Ripley's daughter is the only thing worth keeping there, imho, but the film still works fine without it as "Ripley finds a reason to live again because of Newt."
The automatic turrets in the hallway that you remember is in the Director's Cut of this movie.

The scene in the locked room when the scanner is going off is such extteme suspense. The payoff shot of the aliens advancing in the ceiling is so crazy.
Ripley 100% cried when she learned about Ash being complicit with Mother in Alien. Women CAN cry and still be absolute total badasses
I saw this in the theatre back in the day. When Ripley walked out in the exo-suit the crowd went wild. Everyone stood up and cheered. Awesome.

I'm just some 46 yo dude watching this on a whim. Watching the reaction on your face, while shouting "Get Fucked, Burke! Get Fucked!" Brought a giant stupid smile to my face.
The turrets scene is in the extended version of this movie. Your reactions are just so good. I really enjoy rewatching my favourite movies with you! Can't wait for more 80's movies.
The Turrets are in the Directors Cut of this movie and in that version it explains that Ripley had a daughter that is now dead due to Ripley being in space for over 50 years so that was the connection with Newt.

I still remember when I watched this the first time when we'd binge on 6-8 movies in the late '80s after a trip to the video store. My sister refused to watch Aliens, but when she came into the rec room and said "What are you watching? Oh". She stood in the doorway and watched the rest of the movie. She couldn't bring herself to sit down, but also couldn't stop watching.
𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐀𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧 𝟑! Many criticize it (see the comments below) but don't worry about the naysayers, it's one of the most unique Alien films: it can't be compared to anything in the series either before or after it. The first 3 A-movies are all classics.

Actor who played the Sarge was actually a combat veteran Sargent during the Vietnam war and also decorated for his service.

Hard to believe that Carrie Henn's portrayal of Newt was her only acting role. She went on to become a teacher.
Given how badly child stars tend to end up, I'm glad she got out of there asap.
That said, Newt is my favorite character in the whole movie, with Vasquez coming in second place, and Ripley third.
the scene when marines are preparing after hibernation was shot as last scene. Cameron wanted that whole group is integrated more after whole movie. So they look more relaxed and enjoyed this cantene scenes
Back in the day I had the board game. I loved that the game allowed for plot points to be played out differently (such as it was difficult, but not impossible, for Spunkmeyer/ Ferro to survive the alien attack, which meant from that point the remaining survivors would have access to all the weapons and ammo that were on the dropship). During the later alien attack, it was also possible to try and convince Burke (again, high difficulty) to open the door which would save time in the escape from Operations. I think you had two turns to convince him before he would run away, but that meant two wasted turns if he doesn't listen.
As an alternative strategy, the game manual suggested to fire a grenade down the corridor at the door. Burke goes BOOM, door goes BOOM. Problem solved. They called it the 'Let's Nuke Burke' option :)
theres a pretty great newer boardgame for Alien called Legendary: Alien (i think.. i have it, but its buried in a closet) where you can play a cinematic version of each of the first three movies. :)
Also, theres a fantastic RPG also called Alien RPG that is an absolutely amazing time if youre at all into tabletop roleplaying games.
Vasquez's last line is a great moment. It's a cruel line as written, but by the pain in her voice you know it's just the smart mouth she uses (with her friends) when she's put in a corner.
This film (like predator imo) does wonders with the character depth that can be achieved with just a few words and the way it's delivered.
Did you notice the actor who plays Boggs, the leader of the sisters in shawshank redemption playing one of the marines, I think he’s called drake.
Yep, UK actor Mark Rolston turned in a convincing performance as "Boggs Diamond" in "The Shawshank Redemption." Here he's SmartGun operator "Pvt. Drake."

In the extended cuts Newt is reprimanded by her mother for always playing in the air ducts, which she'd been doing for years. That's how she survived in the complex and knew her way around the ventilation shafts. Also, it was Burke who sent Newt's family to investigate a crash-landed spacecraft, with her father being the first victim of a face hugger. That's how the xenomorphs arrived on the planet, and also what Ripley was talking about when Burke said it was a "bad call". A lot of crucial scenes were cut from the theatrical release.

Lot of people knew Paul Reiser as a "nice guy" actor. When you have no expectations you can see that Burke is a weasel.
In one of these reaction videos they didn’t see Burke’s betrayal coming at all. It was pretty funny.

Your comment about the marines seeming like they went through stuff together is spot on, all the actors did a bootcamp together, and drew the graffiti on their armour and guns. Ripley, Gorman and Burke didn't, so they seemed like outsiders.
If you are looking for a great game to play in the Alien Universe, Alien: Isolation is a fantastic one. It is set between Alien and Aliens.

@@LiteWeightReacting If you play it, you might want to watch the Special Edition of Aliens first, since there's a scene in it (deleted from the theatrical edition) that introduces the protagonist of the game.
The Director's Cut has the scene with turrets. There's also a scene where we find out Ripley had a 10 yr old daughter, and she finds out that she died of old age while she was out there. I think this helps to give extra weight and meaning to her relationship with Newt and I can't understand why such an important character moment was left out of the theatrical release.
The first and second are so good...
The third is also still watchable :)

I saw the original Alien on opening weekend in 1979. Was blown away by it! But when Aliens premiered in 1986, my mind was REALLY blown away and these two movies will forever be enshrined as my favorite cinematic adventures.
If it hasn't been commented yet, the knife scene with Bill Paxton (Hudson) and Lance Henriksen (Bishop) was Lance actually doing the trick. He practiced and actually got that fast at it! And everyone on set knew they were gonna put Hudson's hand under Bishops...except Bill Paxton. That is a genuine reaction
Absolute BS. You can see the speedup of the film clearly when looking at the movements of the other actors, especially Apone's head.

Probably best you get hold of the Director's Cut, as there was a lot removed that bring a whole lot of context to the movie, like why Newt and Ripley bonded so quickly, her calling Ripley "Mommy" at the end, how Newt knew which air ducts to go through, how the colony got infested all of a sudden after being there for years no problem...
Ripley was one of the all time great heroes of cinema. People who say there are no female heroes in movies dont know jack. The best ones are female. Ripley, Leia, Sarah Connor etc

Not that I am trying to defend 'the company', but Burke knew about the 'acid for blood' because Ripley had informed them about it at that 'board meeting' near the beginning of the film (the one where she asked "Did IQs just drop sharply while I was away?").
Since there was no (publicly made known...) distress call, this species likely tickled the company long before Ripley was found. It may also be the reason the company deliberately assigned such an inexperienced leader to investigate, and only 2 squads worth of marines! 🤔

The special edition gives more back story to both Ripley and Newt, and gives Ripley's motivation to protect her more weight.
The auto turrets scene is an additional scene from the extended version. (For me the best version) In that version they talk about Amanda Ripley, Ellen Ripley's daughter, that's why you better understand Ellen's maternal instinct with Newt among other things. Greetings from Spain.

I was 15 when this movie came out and it is one of my all-time favorite movies. I loved Sigourney Weaver returning as Ripley. This was only the second movie I had seen Michael Biehn in after he played Reese in The Terminator. I loved him as Hicks. Jenette Goldstein, who played Vasquez, had roles in Terminator 2 and Titanic. She also co-starred with Lance Henriksen(Bishop) and Bill Paxton(Hudson) in the 1987 vampire movie Near Dark. I love the score the lte James Horner composed for this film. That was some amazing music. Back to Michael Biehn, after I had seen him in this and The Terminator, I saw him in a small role in a 1979 made for television movie, A Fire In The Sky, which is about a comet that is going to hit Phoenix, Arizona in seven days. For a made for television movie from the 70's, the special effects were quite good. Especially when it came to the destruction of Phoenix when the comet hit.

That knife scene wasn't sped up at all - it was Lance Henriksen's party trick, being able to do it that fast - and while Bill Paxton, the guy playing Hudson, was always in that scene, the script didn't call for him to be sat down and included in the knife part itself, that was snuck in without him knowing. So his reactions were all entirely genuine.

James Cameron was reportedly so obsessed with how it turned out that he damaged his relationship with composer James Horner so much that they refused to work together again until Titanic a decade later. Horner then worked with Cameron again on Avatar 1 before Horner died in 2015.
Also, the auto turret guns are in this movie, but you have to watch the Special Edition of Aliens. It's about 18 minutes longer, and the characters actually bring up a comparison to bees as well.
Everybody gives Hudson a lot of shit because he's high-strung...like really high-strung. We'll give you that.
Who got into the colony computer system? Who found the colonists? Never mind how that turned out; who found them? In Medical, who JUMPED IN FRONT OF THE KID at extreme risk to his own life? At the end, knowing he was about to die in a gruesome manner, who bought the rest of the team a chance to survive with all the badassery in the world?

You're missing out by not watching the longer 'Special Edition' version. The auto turrets are in the special edition. Alien 3 has much to like, but over all most people feel it's a let down. If you watch Alien 3 make sure you watch the restored cut. Alien 4 has one cut only. Then there's the Alien vs Predator stuff, but make sure you see Predator 1 and 2 first!

@@LiteWeightReacting If you watch 3, be prepared to see Hicks and Newt die in the opening credits, Ripley land in a prison colony with murderers and r*pists, almost get r*ped, and then die. And there's a magic alien egg on the Sulaco, which shows up out of nowhere, and breaks continuity. Which means it doesn't really follow Aliens, and the entire story depends on it. Without that magic egg, there's no movie. Now you can avoid it. You're welcome.

Alien 3 and Alien resurrection destroy what mythos was built in Alien and Aliens. They are not completely terrible movies but they take Ripleys character down a depressing and disappointing road. A huge fall from the underestimated badass character she was in the first 2 movies.
Watch the first 5 minutes of alien 3 and you'll realise that the biggest villain of the movie is the damn screenwriter. An absolute travesty.
Then there's 2 Alien vs Predator movies which are worth watching to see how they went about the crossover but make no mistake, pure money grab movies. Unrelated to Ripleys story.
Then there's the 2 Ridley Scott prequels, Prometheus and Alien covenant. Alien was Ridley Scott's baby so you should watch these prequels.
there is a cut scene which shows the TRUE fate of Burke. When Ripley is searching for Newt (just after she finds the locator) an arm comes from the wall, startling her. Burke is attached to the wall and begs he with something like "oh god I can feel it, it's inside me!" so Ripley hands him one of the grenades and moves on. You soon hear a muffled explosion. The scene you keep mentioning IS from this, but the special edition. It has extra scenes.
The Special Edition / Director's Cut has many important scenes missing from this one, and also includes the Sentry Turrets you mentioned.

The marine who gave Ripley the locator beken, & showed her how the gun work's also played Kile Reese farther of John Connor 😊
Michael Biehn (Hicks), Bill Paxton (Hudson), and Lance Henriksen (Bishop) are also in The Terminator. In fact, there's a meme that the latter two are the only two actors to be killed by a xenomorph, a predator, *and* termimator.
