Michael Clarke Duncan was ROBBED of the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Michael Caine was good in Cider House Rules, but Michael Clarke Duncan SHATTERED hearts and souls with his performance.

It's probably because the movie itself is so manipulative and because the magical negro trope is such tricky territory.
This one should have won, but it was up against The Sixth Sense, which won that year. I think the Sixth Sense made a bigger impact because of word of mouthy. I never heard of Green Mile until I rented it in the early 2000s.

The most heart wrenching part of this film to me, is when Boss talks to John Coffey about “On my day of Judgement…” and Coffey says “I’m tired boss… I’m tired of people being ugly to each other.” That entire dialogue was heartbreaking and both actors crushed it.
"I'm sorry for what I am".
I saw an interview with the director and he said Tom Hanks was giving an Oscar-worthy performance off-camera to support Michael Clarke Duncan - and MCD was superior in the moment.
I saw it in the cinema and that scene just knocked me sideways.
The actors absolutely took it to another level. A phenomenal scene.
I have always thought the most heart-wrenching line is, “Don’t put me in the dark. I’s afraid of the dark.”
John Coffey’s lament. “I’m tired of people being ugly to each other”. Me too, John.

When he said, "Don't put me in the dark." it broke my heart. I watched this in school and even boys were crying. I had to walk outside and cried like a baby.
My theory is that he was afraid of the dark because that’s where he goes in his mind when he’s feeling other people’s pain or healing them. The clue is that when he heals Miranda, she says that she dreamt they were both wandering in the dark, and found each other.
by far, the best reaction to this movie I have ever seen. Not only were you honest with your emotions, but you got many of the connections that many miss. Great job.

Exactly. You caught on quickly to the small details. Many people miss the instances where John feels an evil presence as Wild Bill arrives on the Mile, and also when John is watching the movie as the projector light surrounds John like a halo. Mister Jingles is over 60 years old by the end of the film.
Stephen King discovered pretty early in his writing career, that the most scary things he might bring to paper, are not the monsters, he can come up with - but just ordinary humans.
And the things they do to each other.
They don't call him "The King of Horror" for nothing.
The King of Horror is more fitting himself in real life.
That's why the mist is so hard to watch...

Yeah, I'd have to agree about it being the best reaction to this movie. I've seen a few where the reactor(s) don't even shed a tear. I can kind of understand, to a point. I have had issues showing any kind of emotion when it comes to death due to watching my grandfather pass away in front of me when I was 11. That direct emotion is severed for me. However, watching others cry makes me reconnect that emotion. My wife asked me why I watch sad videos. It's hard for her to understand.

I'd say from the start of the 90's he was on a pretty amazing run, I can't think of an actor that has had a better decade run of movies really, from Philadelphia right through to Castaway. You could even extend it a year or two to include great movies like The Burbs, Road To Perdition and Catch Me If You Can.

If his life scales as Mr Jingles has he will live centuries at minimum, if not millennia.
@@mnomadvfx I don't think so. Mr. Jingles, John brought back to life, Paul he just shared a vision with. Paul had obviously aged considerably, just not nearly as much as his true age would suggest. I'd peg Paul lasting decades more, but not centuries.

And what a talent in Mr. Duncan. It was buetifull how he made this giant imposing mountain of a man so wonderfully innocent and endearing. This role deserved every award out there. Really miss this great talented man.

5:16 In the book, John Coffey was 6'8". Michael Clarke Duncan was a little shorter at 6'4", so they gave him platform shoes for the role.
Funny thing is the actor who played the warden is taller than him (6’7)

@@tomaskennedyTom Hanks is actually 5'8". There's a lot of big-time actors that are filmed well above their height, giving them styles of shooting that make them seem taller than they are, for example Tom Cruise. You'd think he's 6', but he's like 5'7".
People wonder why Stephen King is so beloved as a writer. This is why. He writes about human experiences and uses the supernatural to accentuate the stories. I’m glad she caught the the JC nod and everything else. This has been one of the better reactions to this movie.
I watched The Mist once and the ending really got to me.
She even got the halo behind John's head!
Stephen King definitely gives plenty of nods to God in his stories.
The book was easy to adapt to a screenplay; it's almost word-for-word the same as the book.
Nowadays, only the worst kinds of murder are eligible for the death penalty, but in the 1920/30s when this movie took place, lots of lesser crimes were, including even car theft and burglary in some states. By setting it then, Stephen King brilliantly made it easier to sympathize with the inmates, because you really don't know what their crimes were.
You are such a sweet, empathic person. And watching you react to all these amazing movies is a joy.

Michael Jeter was fantastic in this movie. You felt his despair and anguish. When he yells "no" it cuts right through to your soul. And Doug Huchison really did an unbelievable job at making you hate him. Top to bottom, this cast was fantastic.

Id say that Percy is one of the top 10 movie Villains in cenematic history. He ranks right up there with Darth Vader.

I think he did better than John's character
A mouse's lifespan is approx. 2 years, so 32 lifespans for him and he is still going. Paul is just 108, so he has a long ways to go since the average lifespan for a human is 65 or so. 2080 (65 x 32 lifespans) years at least left + more. It's terrifying and a really heartbreaking ending.
Modern day Methuselah (who lived for centuries in the Bible).
There are times in life when annoying sniffling is right and proper. The Green Mile is several of those times.

You know that the actor is doing an amazing job when they actually make you hate them. Also, a lady who likes little cuddly mice? Schweet. But she looks married given the ring. haha For anyone wondering, at 31:47 he is saying to the mouse, "Goodbye, my friend. I love you, my little one."

This is one of the best movies of all time. I've seen it so much, scores of times including "reactions" like this. I'm always mildly surprised that so many watching it, even for the first time, do not make the connection of Stephen King's book from which this came. King's works always have a element of fantasy-horror. Carrie. Salem's Lot. The Stand. It. Your reaction was spot on.
I remember it like it was yesterday. I was around 11 maybe 12 years old at the time, sat down and watched this movie for the first time back in 2007, parents asleep upstairs around 10pm.
Im not the type to cry even as a child, when i sat and watched this alone, it changed me inside, i cried harder then i had in years and to this day, its still the hardest hitting movie ive ever watched all these years later.
You're reaction mirrored mine in many ways, you'll remember this movie for years even decades to come, its just that much of a classic.

This movie kills me every time. One scene that I’ve grown to appreciate more every time I watch it is right before Del’s execution. You can tell he’s fully rehabilitated, but people weren’t given those sort of chances back then. “I sure wish I coulda met you guys some place else” absolutely destroys me

I have seen many, MANY reactions for this film, from other reactions. But there were VERY FEW that knew that Coffy was innocent from the early part of THIS FILM. This makes YOU a BEAUTIFUL HUMAN BEING. Yes, this world is, CURRENTLY, an ugly place (at the moment), but I'm SO PROUD to see that there are STILL people, LIKE YOU, are still here NOW. @@Stone_Horse From the book.....Eduard Delacroix was a death-row inmate incarcerated at Cold Mountain Penitentiary for raping and killing a young girl, then trying to cover up his crime by burning her body. The fire was near an apartment building that caught on fire and killed six more people, including two children. After a lengthy trial, he was sentenced to death by electric chair.
I raised a son by myself, always felt I had to be strong and not cry in front of him. Childhood issues, but every few years I would watch this movie to get it out. It was bottled up inside for so long. This movie was the only thing that would allow me to get rid of all the unshed tears. One of Stephen Kings biggest fan. I've read all his books. This is one of my favorites. Your reaction had me crying right along with you. Not ashamed of crying anymore, gets all the toxicity out. Feels cleansing now, instead of weak. Another thing to add to the JC notes is that Tom's character Paul is name of the man telling the story.
Have no regrets. Any movie that can be so moving that it makes you touch on feelings you'd rather not feel is a good thing. We all need to experience such strong emotions and feelings. Whether we know it or not, we're much better off in the long run. Empathy and compassion are in such short supply these days, we need to find a way to find it, no matter the source.
I may have watched maybe 30 reactions to this movie and yours is one of the best.

Hey girl, sending you a hug all the way from germany. You've chosen one hell of a movie. One of my favorites. Still, the one favorite I rarely watch. Because this is some heavy. heavy stuff. And it hits close to home considering the fact that I work in a prison fortress here in germany. We have no death penalty, for that I'm grateful but as a warden, who is working with so many different inmates for almost 8 years now, you are also getting in touch with all their stories, their lives, regrets, hopes and dreams. It's not for everyone to work in a place like this but I'm happy. For I'm convinced that what I do here every day has some meaning and purpose.

Damn what an amazing heartfelt reaction. I've seen this film around a dozen times and about the same amount of various reactors reacting to it but never have I had a reactor break me as much as you did, I felt your sadness so much it just made me want to hug you.

This movie is phenomenal, on many levels. It evokes such raw emotions from the people who watch it and connect with it. You're right, there are many quotable, memorable lines. I never tire of seeing it, and seeing others react to it for the first time. Great reaction video.

@LiteWeightReacting you'll find yourself wanting to watch it again, it might just be a little while. I think that the movie makes a good test for finding out what kind of person someone is. If someone can watch it and not become engrossed, and very moved emotionally, it speaks volumes about that person's ability to be empathetic, in my opinion.

I am SO disappointed that this guy isn't directing movies anymore.
I mean, his first 2 flicks are undebateable all-time classics, and then he made another great film in my opinion with The Mist, and The Majestic is oretty good too. WHY walk away after that streak?
Despite any individual belief, if you cry when you watch this movie take heart. It means you are a functioning human. This is a sad tale beyond sad.

Great reaction like always, love this movie. The late Michael Clark Duncan said this was the hardest role he had to prepare for. For emotional scenes, Michael Clarke Duncan would recall his father leaving him as a child. There are some fun-facts about it. Fifteen mice were used in the movie. Each spent months being trained to do different tricks.
Coffey's bed was built shorter in order to make Michael Clarke Duncan look like a giant He also stated that he was genuinely scared when he had that shotgun pointed at him. I missed reading the books when they first came out and kinda wish I would have read them before watching the movie.
And congrats not many people realize at firsts that John Coffey is a Christ figure. He appeared out of nowhere, as if he had just “fallen out of the sky.” He had foreknowledge of future events. He can see the good or evil that is in men’s hearts. He can heal illness and afflictions and resurrect the dead (if it’s not too late). He is innocent, with a pure soul, yet he is made to suffer and die because of the sins and wickedness of others. And even his initials are J.C., just like Jesus. (Recall the scene where John is watching his first-ever flicker show, and the light from the movie projector is illuminating his head from behind, just like a halo: The Christian symbolism is unmistakable) Keep up the good work.
And btw you should react to Schindler's List it will break your soul and its another you must watch movie.

As a 'tough' grown man, I can say this film has me in absolute tears every single time I see it!
Soon as we saw you tearing up just 5 minutes in, I knew this would hit you like a ton of proverbial bricks! - it just tugs SO hard on the heart strings, & that's before the supernatural element even kicks in.
I think this movie, the cast - & Michael Clarke Duncan especially - deserve all the praise in the world: in my humble opinion this is nigh on the perfect movie. Shout out too to Doug Hutchison playing Percy: you can't hate & revile a character so much if the actor isn't making your skin crawl with a great performance!

An average mouse lives up to 2 years, and Mr.Jiggles has survived over 5 decades that was the reference Paul meant a mouse exceeding over 25 times it's expected lifespan when you convert that theory to say 60 years average for a man, then Paul could possibly live up to 1,500 years before he nears his own for longing Greenmile.

Interestingly enough, in the book, "Mr Jingles" was first seen on the mile before Del got there IIRC.
The guards called him "Steamboat Willie". Steamboat Willie was the first version of Mickey Mouse in the 1928 animated film "Steamboat Willie".
Later, Del changed his name to "Mr. Jingles".

Oh no....saw the title and knew this poor young lady was going to be crushed, She was despondent over Brooks in Shawshank...she's going to be a mess after this.
Shawshank is the far superior film, but Green Mile is *FAR* sadder and more cynical. Shawshank lifts you up, Green Mile crushes you.

In the book, Del knew a girl that had spurned his romantic advances so he tried to scare her by setting fire to her apartment house. 13 people died in the blaze. He was guilty of doing something stupid rather than evil. He was an OK guy for the most part. Wet sponge or no, this is not a humane way to execute a person by any stretch of the imagination. Del did not deserve that.
Not quite right. He raped and killed a young girl then to cover it up he tried to burn the body which caught an apartment building on fire killing 6 others including 2 children.

I remember it differently....Didn't he rape and murder a young girl before starting a fire, (to cover up the crime) which accidentally caused the deaths of six more people (including 2 kids).
I read it 25+ years ago, so I may be wrong....
