Hi,
In 2016 I bought a new narrowboat hull. It was a "sailaway" but there was still plenty to do - hence the title of this channel.
I'll be looking back and discussing all different aspects of the fit out, as well as taking you on my latest cruises, plus anything else narrowboat related.
Let me know if there is anything you are particularly interested in!

It's my penultimate cruise although I didn't know it at the time. I discover a sunken boat... is it an omen? *Sorry for lack of dialogue in this one, snow seemed to have found its way into the camera and some of the audio was unusable!

Nice to see you again JL. Thank you for sharing your recommendations. I forgotten about the series featured at number 1. Have to agree that Robbie Cumming is top of the,it’s for content, presentation style and showing what it’s actually like to live aboard. Happy new year, Simon.
I think Narrowboat was one of the first ones that got me thinking about it seriously, just pipped old Robbie to the top spot on the day :)
Happy Christmas Johnny, good to see you back🙏🙏
Not back properly but doing my best!
Great to see you again Johnny. . . Thanks for the selection of shows to watch. I can't remember some of them so something to watch now. I think we all loved your Christmas day dinner and drinks. . . sort of a tradition 😏 . maybe next year ?. Hope you had a lovely Christmas and looking forward to seeing you in the new year. Take care 😊
Hi Mark hope I didn't dissapoint you too much but I just didn't think I had anything new to offer regarding xmas day!
@ not at all Johnny, it was still good to see you. You have a very comical way of presenting your Christmas videos whether it’s intended or not so it always makes them appealing to watch. . . . . Just puts a smile on our faces.
Keep up the good work...
Hi James. Thank you, I will do my best.
Hi Johnny. It's great seeing you. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas 🎄. Thank you for introducing me to some new videos to look up. Look forward to seeing what you come up with next❤️.
Hi Penney, plenty more ideas in the pipe line. All the best for the new year.
Hope you can get hold of a few of the rarer ones!
You made it past the YT copyright police, Johny. Happy Christmas.
So far! I always wondered, as there are plenty other critique/review vids around (though not for boating!).
Merry Christmas to you 🎄🎄. Thanks for this entertaining list. Seen most of these over the years. Would have liked to have your annual Christmas dinner vlog. It's become a traditional watch in our house! Take care.
I have to say, I wasn't really feeling very Xmasy this year so I think this was a safer bet!
Thanks for posting your selection. Have a good 2025.
I was surprised just how tv programs there are - no wonder everyone is taking up the lifestyle!
Great to see you again JL, good to see you looking well. Interesting selection of programmes. Hope you had a great Christmas, and wish you a Happy New Year, all the best for 2025, hope we see you sometime soon, take care 🚢🚢🚢
Hi Chris, and thanks. All the best to you for 2025.
A couple of those new to me, thanks, will look for them.
Hi David - ah, good. I was surprised how many there were - originally I thought I'd struggle to find ten!
That’s a great selection Johny. I had only heard of a few of these so there’s plenty of watching ahead for me. Not a factual canal programme as such, but a very amusing and absorbing drama is The Flower of Gloster, which was a children’s series from the 1960’s. It is only semi scripted and there are many scenes with real canal workers talking about their way of life. The Anderton lift is shown working with the motors and pulleys. It’s on TH-cam.
Thanks for the tip, will definitely be checking that one out!
Nice to see you ....merry Christmas ❤
Hi Loraine, and a happy new year to you!
Nice one Johnny, I'll try and scour the net and see if I can find them.
One or two "rarities" on there but hopefully some of the newer channels might "dredge them up" at some point.
i watched narrowboat Dover if you listen carefully you can actually hear a grumpy worker in the background insulting Alan Heard while hes presenting
Hi Nathan - in which episode? I'll have to look out for that!
@ProjectNarrowboat it's the one where he's laying the insulation in the floor and he's talking into the camera and you hear the worker in the background say presenter in a very dissmissive condescending pissed off tone I was surprised they left it in lol
Good one!!
Thank you!
Hi, MERRY Christmas to you and yours. Blessings 😊🎉
And to you to, all the best for 2025.
Christmas 2024 has officially started with my annual re-watching of this video. Happy Christmas @projectnarrowboat
@ProjectNarrowboat
Hi Sue, nice to know your still getting enjoyment from that one. Four years ago already. All the best for 2025.
Thank you for your candid & honest thoughts. I have now subscribed :)
Hi and thanks - if it's someting you are thinking of trying I would never put you off but it's definitely challenging at times.
@@ProjectNarrowboat kind to reply. :)
Question: (you have solar) so, is it possible to store that extra energy in summer for winter use ? I suppose in "theory" it may work but not certain. Thank you for your educational video about such an important subject.
You would need an extremely large bank of batteries, about one (100ah lithium) for every days use. So if you had around 180 batteries, probably. They could be housed down under the floor space if the boat was designed for them, but they are too expensive to make it practical.
@@ProjectNarrowboat Yes indeed and thank you for your reply.
Looking forward to your next Vlog, Johny. Will you tell me what video editor you prefer to use?
I use Shotcut. Tried one or two others which struggled to run on so-so lap tops. It's perhaps a tad basic, but gets the job done. Plus, it works in Ubuntu as well as Windows.
Love the Oxford hair cut 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed!
Nice to see you It’s been a long time?
Hi Ruth. Yes, the time has been pasing so quickly. I still find myself drawn to the canals.
Thanks Johnny, a pleasure seeing you again with water .
Hi Gary. I wish I'd made that video on a sunny day, the canal is very picturesque and it's a nice little town but every thing was so grey on a "typical" English autumn day.
Thanks for the visit to Aylesbury. I do love seeing places far from my home in Tennessee. Nice to hear your voice again.
Hi and thanks. I could certainly do a few more places like this - hopefully when the sun is out - we do get it sometimes in the uk, honest!
So nice to see you again - you look good. My husband and I love the Christmas you shared with us all. It is a classic we watch every year. love, from America.
Thank you very much. There were several xmas's!
Brilliant seeing you on here again Johnny. . . Aylesbury looks a fine place to visit. 😊. Look after yourself bud.
Hi Mark, Yes I do like Aylesbury but once again (as per my Leighton Buzzard video) a grey day didn't help it to look its best. It also has quite a large out lying area of useful places retail/industrial etc so it is quite a complete town of its own.
Good to see you back Jonny. I didn't do that arm because i just couldn't be bothered with all those locks and i think the water levels were getting low.
Hi Will, well have at it next time you pass! Which probably won't be long knowing the amount of cruising you do.
It's great to see you back mate 👍
Thanks Ian, well not as back as I'd like to be but it was good to see that canal again.
Hi Jonny great to see you again🎉🎉. I didn’t know you had another channel. Can you please tell me where to find it? Thanks 😊
Hey Penney, I think I actually put a link in the video at one point - and it should be shown at the very end. I don't think many people know about it for some reason!
I have missed seeing you!
Hi Rick, thank you, sorry I'm not about much at the moment.
Hi Johny I bet you really want to be back on the cut !! Still on the Aromat I am.
It was so strange to think it was eight years ago I was moored there with my brand new project boat. Oh the Aromat - that stuff works with just about everything... salad, eggs, potatoes...
Nice to see you back 'On the cut,' Johny.
Thank you and I was technically "afloat" at one point (don't tell crt!).
Hi nice see you back regards
Hi Glyn, thank you. But where on earth does all the time go?
Nice to see you back on the canal. I’m surprised you didn’t show us David Bowie’s statue to commemorate his first gig in Aylesbury. John Otway also came from there. I had a day out walking down the canal and left my phone on a bench at the basin. I thought I’d never see it again, but a guy from the University handed it in to a woman working at the cafe. My friend put a message on Facebook and the woman saw it, so I got it back. There are are some good hearted, honest people in Aylesbury.
Oh - well the reason I didn't show David Bowie's statue was that I just didn't know about it! I didn't do any research before hand - not that I ever really do - it was a spur of the moment one this.
Great vlog! Hope to see more in the future.
Thanks, I'll see if I can keep posting albeit a bit sporadically.
Good to see you Jonny, are you missing your sea legs yet?🤔
Hi Nick, undoubtedly. When the time is right...
Good to see you well Johnny, stay well mate👍👍
Hi John, thank you. Best.
Great idea that would be quite easy to replicate. I was trying to guess the diameter of the rebar and thinking you have 12 or 16mm there? Now subscribed.
Oh that's a point - I don't have them now so I'm not 100% sure. Certainly either 12 or 16mm. The thing with them was that because they were relatively thin, they pierced the ground well (even going through hard obstructions on occasions) and of course they were so strong that they never bent. The pattern on them kind of allowed you to twist them in but also gripped the ground. And when removing you could grip them really well. Way better than anything else I ever used.
Hello Johny, so good to see you again. Glad you're OK. Very interesting Vlog. Love to see some more Vlogs, as I like your presentation style. I remember the Christmas dinners you made on board. Wishing you all the very best. Spoolbox.
Hey. As I always tell people, I do have a lot of ideas for vids that I just haven't gotten around to yet but in the meantime you can always find me pottering about over on my other channel!
I suspect you're tempted back ...? I know we certainly are (sold our nb in 2022)
Hi Sue, I think about it often. But the time will have to be right - need to be free of other distractions and able to commit. However, I did by a few tickets for May's raffle so you never know...
Great to see you looking so well JL, good to hear the positives of boating, hope to see you on here soon, take care ⛴️⛴️⛴️
Hi Chris. Yes there are plenty positives - hope to get back some day but I just don't know where the time is going.
Great to see you ! Have wondered if you are ok.
Alive and kicking and heading for 60!
Great to see you back Johnny. . . . we all miss you. Thanks for sharing with us the good bits about boat life. Take care.
Hi Mark, thanks for that. Sorry I haven't been reading my messages so often - where does the time go? Yes, plenty good things about being aboard.
It's amazing how fast time goes by Johnny. . . Can't believe it is nearly Christmas!!. . .which means we could see a famous JL Christmas vlog ??. Take care bud.
Great to see you❤
Thank you. I'd like to post more often but chats aren't really my forte, I'm more an out in the field kind of guy!
Good to see you back! ❤
Hi Wendy and thanks. Not fully back but you never know.
Great to see you’ve not forgotten us with this little vlog. I get the impression you miss boating (but not in these last weeks of rain!), is that true? We miss your lovely videos and interesting ramblings of your canal life, but, hey ho, keep popping up with other bits and bobs. We’re all waiting. Take care and enjoy life.
Hi Susan. Oh yes, definitely miss the boat, no place better to be on a fine English day. But of course life isn't that simple.
Hello, ahh this brings back memories!! Not just of your boating journey but of ours before we moved back to land. One I miss would be the boating comarderie and the chitchat at locks eith others along the canal path.... what are your plans for next half of the year, more walks or is there another DIY subject on the horizon? Hope u r well. Xx
Hi Lynette. More walks AND more diy to come! I'd love to do something canal based if and when I get the opportunity. I really don't know where all the time goes though.
Hello Jonny. 👍
Hey Will. I just can't keep up with your vlogs you are so F A S T !
@@ProjectNarrowboat 2 a week. 🤣🤣
I agree with your list, mostly, but you missed cruising the boat. Driving the boat around all the different obstacles and in and out of locks is the best fun of the canals for me. Never knowing what is going to develop and what challenges you are going to meet on the way is endlessly enjoyable.
I always found cruising the boat single handed to be rather hard work. Glorious at times though...
Have to admit, i had completely forgotten about you Jonny 😔 it's great to see you again, glad your doing ok.🍻👍
Well I'll keep my hand in for now, and see if and where things may lead.
