Summer in full swing, weather is nice, let's pump up the tyres and head for the trails! We tend to cycle close to where we live in relatively rural Cheshire (England) but I knew that this place is a great place for an easy enjoyable ride. We packed the car and set off nice and early, something we can definitely recommend.

    Is anyone able to tell where the junction that joins the two paths (to go back to the car park) is? After the old brick hut I cannot seem to find the junction I just go straight up the hill and find the path by fluke but I really want to go up to the junction point to complete it properly

    Lovely insight into the task you are undertaking. You've done a grand job on the Olives. For brambles, I find sharp secateurs (like Felco) and a pair of glass cutters or other armoured gloves really work well. Keep up the good work!

      That would definitely save some money, especially in France. The trade off then is the speed and convenience of course because the alternative roads are much slower.

    I really found your humour disagreeable. You made your journey far more expensive than necessary by travelling on the peages. Using the N roads would have save you a lot of money for about an extra hour’s driving a day. As for the hotel, why were you so rude about it? You obviously chose it knowing what it was. It will have been cheaper and cleaner than anything similar in the U.K. if you had wanted luxury why didn’t you chose and pay for luxury? You touched Spain? Isn’t it over 400 minimum miles from the French border to Portugal? I won’t be subscribing.

    Imagine the same journey in an EV? You'd be suffering from PTSD by the time you arrived.

      That depends and I definitely wouldn't mind doing it in an EV. I'm not sure if you have, but if you look at our other videos you'll see that my wife and I drove the NC500 in Scotland (from Cheshire) in an EV without any issues at all. There's a tool for every job and not every tool suits every user. An EV may not be the right type of car for you for a journey like this but if I had more time I would have actually preferred my EV over the Diesel. The journey would have taken a bit longer, but it would have been more comfortable without the diesel sound in the background the whole way.

      No problem whatsoever if taking three days for the journey. I hope you haven’t fallen for the negativity. There’s a great video about a man who drove East to West from coast to coast across Canada in 72 hours. You ought to watch it, you might learn something.

      Hi David! Every journey has a purpose and a set of conditions. We wanted to take it easy as it was the first time we've done this type of road trip. It was pretty easy over three days but we decided that if we were to drive all the way again we'd do it slightly differently and try to get it done in two which I think can also be done quite comfortably. We also drove pretty much the whole time at leas than the speed limit as we wanted to enjoy the drive, talk and enjoy the changing scenery 😊👍

      @robertp.wainman4094 I know what you mean and I agree in many ways. Six, eight or twelve cylinders sound very nice, don't have to work hard at motorway speeds and settle into a nice gentle rumble in the background. 1.6 litre 4 cylinder diesel not so much though 😉

Nothing happened to our tools and there were no obvious signs that anyone tried to get inside of either of the barns, but things have definitely changed a bit, more on that in the coming videos 😊 We have plenty of plans for the land, but we're at the slow end of the proces at the moment. We'll definitely keep everyone updated through vlogs so bare with us 😉

    Please explain better the stickers on the back lights of the car. I did not understand it very well, and I m driving to Portugal soon. Thanks

      Sure, you don't need any stickers on the back lights, only on the front. Car headlights (front) are calibrated to light up the road and sights to the side of the road which in the UK are to the left. When you drive in mainland europe, to the left you will have oncoming traffic and as such the light that is meant to light up signs in the UK will shine straight into the eyes of oncoming traffic. That's why you need to buy those stickers and put them in the correct place on your headlamps. The stickers should come with a guide telling you where to stick them based on what car you have. Order some online and read the leaflet in advance if you can, if not you can buy them at Eurotunnel or maybe on a ferry if that's what you go for.

    Could you tell me what 4g camera you use please?. I've been looking at the cheep chinese ones, but not sure if they support bands 1,8,20 which seem most common in Portugal regardless of whether MEO, NOS or Vodafone are used?

      It's made by K&F Concepts and comes with a SIM card that is supposed to connect to the best provider in the area where you use it so it's not for a specific provider. We ordered and had it delivered to the UK but it's being used in Portugal. Have a look at a previous vlog if you want to see what it looks like, I think the one called a few jobs on our farm or something like that shows us putting it up. It will also feature briefly in the next vlog we'll be uploading. Hope that helps 👍

    Thank you for the costs. I have been considering doing this twice a year utilising the Schenghen travel allowance. But I am now thinking it may be cheaper to fly with a budget airline and hire a car or take the train. Seems you did not have any issues importing your tools and other items, but if you did it could have got even more expensive.

      It very much depends on how long you're going over for 😊 For a week, fly and hire definitely. If you're going over for a month or want to cross borders, go for a road trip, bringing your own car starts to make more sense. One option to consider is using a ferry to Spain instead of driving through France. That alone will save on a night's accommodation (if applicable), a tank and a half or two of fuel and about £130 or so in French tolls. A ferry is roughly the same cost also as the Eurotunnel roughly speaking.

      @@DJAAdventures Thank you for your reply. I was imagining the ferry from Portsmouth or Plymouth to Santander being several hundred pounds, (as much as £500) depending on the time of year, which is why most people drive via northern France.

      Maybe in August, but even then I doubt it would be quite that much (also depending on the quality of the cabin you book). Stating the obvious here, but the time of the year you travel makes a big difference to the cost of a ferry or Eurotunel crossing. Based on the limited comparison research we did on the way, I would expect the ferry to come out cheaper than driving all the way most of the time and also quicker as I think the ferries to Spain are overnight.

      Driving is a totally different experience than flying, and if you not done it before and you like driving, I would really recommend it is worth a higher cost, in my opinion 👍👌

      @@danutastokrotka556 I will drive certainly, as there will be items that I wish to transport. But utilising my Scheghen visa I can only spend 180 days a year in Portugal. I will want to come and go, so flying budget airline at £100.00 return UK to Portugal rather than £1200 return drive three or four times a year, makes financial sense. For that money I can buy a local car and keep it fat my Portugal home to use when I am there.

    Just to make very clear on the statement "seek legal advice if you can" I would like to rephrase that for anyone saying that into 'Seek legal advice, always'. One simple must do that. No matter if you do things with or without an estate agent. Estate agents lie(sell). Thats all they need and want to do usually. They can say something has a habitation license but if it doesnt and you purchased it then well you cant live there and need to find a... Real estate agent to sell. (Altough you did explain things why and how later on) 😀 So this is basically a reiteration p.s. You gave awesome advice

      Are you referring to central Portugal in general? There's not much industry in that region and younger people move to the cities to earn a living, the same happens in a lot of other places in the world, just the way it is.

      It is sad that when we are younger we race for material things and fun, but while the life passing by some of us just realising that the real value is somewhere els i.e. piece, harmony and balance of life, conection to the nature etc. I love your footage 😍💖😍

I live in the south of France and many portugees work here , because they did not find jobs in their own country Is it now possible with telework or is there another reason ? I am just wondering Is it only because the living is much cheaper ? In that case it means you have to work in a rich country and live in a poor country ?? Portugal is in the EU, and is experiencing the same stupid polical rules as we do here in France so what makes the difference ? And do not tell me it is the climate, it is the same as here So please explain

    Great comedy, just curious but do the buildings have habitation license? My wife and I have been searching but have heard mixed things about what you can and can’t build

      Hey Sam, thanks! Nope, they don't have a habitation licence. In my experience unless a house is clearly used as a house and was built to certain standards it's unlikely to have a licence, I certainly wouldn't expect a stone barn like the ones we have to have one. Some of the fully converted buildings you may see for sale may have an exemption certificate if they're quite old, but in my limited experience that is also rare. We're in the process of sorting out the paperwork now and will keep the updates coming in the videos as news becomes available.

      It's been a while since that trip, so unfortunately I can't remember the exact location to be honest. I do remember there being a hotel very close by with its own car park, a waterfall close to that hotel and those were pretty much opposite what I think was a hydro power station on the other side of the Loch. Sorry I haven't got the exact place, but hopefully that will be enough for you to find it on Google Maps:)

    If you want to get rid of the mimosa trees you'll have to pull them out from their roots. If they're too big to be pulled, try peeling their bark at about 30cms from the ground and go as deep into the roots as possible. That'll dry them and kill them.

      Thanks for the tips! As you know it's a bigger job to do it properly and we just didn't have the time during that visit. We saw the bark peeling technique in use at a national park near Coimbra as well. Hopefully next time we'll have the time to do as you suggested 👍

      ​@@DJAAdventures Yes, it 's a load of work. When they're small they are very easy to pull out, specially just after the rain when the earth is wet and soft. When they become bigger (2/3 meters) it becomes a lot more difficult. Unfotunately cutting them wont do as they keep on sprouting again and again and their roots penetrate deeper into the soil... nasty weeds from hell!

      They are definitely troublesome which is why we wanted to tackle them at least a bit in the time we had. We've seen people use them in some really interesting ways though so I'm hoping to keep some and use them as a renewable resource in a controlled way, not too close to the house though.

    To find out the status of any property, plot of land or building, before you make an offer, get a copy of the Caderneta Predial of that property from the seller or agent, take it to the local Camara Municipal and ask them what you CAN DO and CAN'T DO with that property. Ask if the property is registered as rustic or urban. Can you renovate an exisitng old building for habitation? Build new? How many square meters can you build? The local Camara has the answer to all your questions. The Caderneta Predial is like the ID document of a property, all properties have a Caderneta. It shows the property registration number, the status such as rustic or urban land, or mixed, the owner(s) name, the boundaries, total area. Agents cannot offer a property for sale without having received the Caderneta, so don't be fooled if they say they don't have the Caderneta. If they don't give you a copy of the Caderneta it may be because they are trying to hide something, they don't want you to find out there are problems. It happens a lot. The seller(s) can print as many copies of the Caderneta Predial as they wish from their online tax account, all free. If you want a written reply from the Camara Municipal, you can fill a PIP request form (Pedido de Informaçao Prévia) and it'll cost you around 30 Euros. But if they are not very busy at the Camara, they'll give you all the information there and then free of charge. Just get a copy of that Caderneta. Any decent agent & seller will give you copies of all the documents speedily.

    There's a lot of misunderstanding about the 1951 EXEMPTION from having an habitation license. Here's some points: 1. The habitation license is a document that started being required for all HABITATION buildings built after 1951 to present date, it is issued by the Camara Municipal of each area, and it states that the building was built to be a habitation according to all the requirements at the date of construction. 2. All buildings built for habitation BEFORE 1951 were exempt of having an habitation licence, that exemption still applies today if these buildings are in their original shape, not renovated, and that's why those habitations can be sold without an habitation licence today. 3. This exemption to have an habitation license ONLY APPLIES to HABITATIONS. It does not apply to farm support buildings, such as barns, sheds, animal sheds, shepperds huts, etc with roof or without, even if people lived in such places. For instance, sometimes very poor folks came to work for a farmer and may have lived in those stone barns a long time ago, but it does not make them into habitations. Same for shepperds living in stone barns etc. 4. What matters is if the land where the old stone barn stands is registered as URBAN, which means that a habitation can be made in that urban plot, either by renovating the building already there or by demolishing and building new, subject to the required approval of the project, of course. If the plot of land is registered as RUSTIC you cannot build anything, unless the status of the plot is changed from rustic to urban. EASY if the plot is in or near a village, very DIFFICULT if it's in the middle of nowhere, IMPOSSIBLE if it's in the middle of forest because of the high risk of forest fires. 5. The habitation license must be upgraded each time there are major renovations done to the house. If you buy an habitation (please note the word HABITATION, not barn or farm support building) that was built before 1951, it should be exempt from an habitation license if it is still in its original shape. You can buy it without an habitation license, and if you don't do anything to it, you can sell it again without an habitation license. BUT... if you renovate it you'll need to upgrade its status and get an habitation license. You won't be able to sell or rent a renovated building without an habitation license. The exemption is NOT forever... only till the house is renovated and the documents updated. If you are going to buy a renovated building it should have an habitation license. If it doesn't, don't buy it without one. 6. The 1951 exemption does not apply to any other buildings that were not habitations when they were built. Estate agents often say stone barns are exempt from an habitation license because they were built before 1951, they are (almost) telling the truth because... stone barns don't need a license or any document to be a barn, but they are not and never were an HABITATION. You can't make a home / habitation in a stone barn. The exemption is not for stone barns & agricultural support buildings. A barn is a barn. Different from an habitation. It's like saying: I found a bridge built before 1951 and therefore I can make a home under it without an habitation license. Bonkers? Hope this helps to understand what is an exemption from habitation license.

    In Portugal buyers NEVER pay anything to a estate agent. I'm worried you've been SCAMMED. I don't understand WHY you had to sign a contract with the estate agent. Again... I think it was a scam to get some money from you. You don't say what kind of contract that was? Do you have a copy of it? You may be able to claim compensation for being misled and taken advantage of, you may be able to get something like 50,000 Euros compensation. The only contratct that is signed when you decide you want to buy a property is a Promisory Contract (Contracto de Promessa de Compra e Venda). It can only be signed with the OWNER of the property (not the agent...) and that contract states that the owner promises to sell the property to the BUYER for xxx price and the buyer promises to buy it, under some terms & conditons such as a date for completion. If the seller broke the terms of the contract he would have to give the deposit back to the buyer IN DOUBLE as a penalty. If the buyer decided he no longer wanted to buy, with no good reasons such as being misled, or the seller did not have the correct documents to finish the sale, the buyer would loose the deposit he paid. BUT... the Promisory Contract is only necessary when the buyer is going to apply for a loan from a bank to buy the property, as the bank will need to have a copy of this Promisory Contract to prepare the loan / mortgage. Banks in Portugal don't give loans / mortgages on land so this contract would never be needed in this case here. You don't need to sign a Promisory Contract if you are ready to buy and have the money. If you made an offer and it was accepted, you then agree a date to complete the sale with the seller and the seller books an appointment with a notary (any notary anywhere in Portugal, but usually a local one) and you pay the price agreed to the seller at the notary when you sign the deeds transfer by bankers cheque or through your solicitor as was done in this case. You could sign a Promisory Contract to SECURE the property for yourself, if there were a lot of people interested and the seller might sell to someone else if you had not sign a contract. A DEPOSIT is paid with the signing of a Promisory Contract: always paid to the SELLER never to the agent, and later it would be deducted from the total price of the property, and you'd pay the balance at the notary on day of comletion. In all cases the Promisory Contract should be signed at a solicitor or better still, at a NOTARY. It incurs a fee paid by the buyer. Buyers & sellers can sign such contrats between themselves without involving professionals and save the fee (the portuguese do that all the time) but it is not advised if you don't understand the text, don't know the language and laws. You did well to involve a solicitor, but perhaps you should have done it earlier before signing any contract. Don't sign anything without a solicitor. The going rate to hire a bilingual solicitor to help you with the buying process will be around 200 to 300 Euros and this should cover all work to check all documents relating to the property are in order, prepare the Promisory Contract if there is one, as well as advising the buyer on status / type of property they are buying and possible pitfalls. Not all solicitors are equally competent. For anyone intending on buying a property in Portugal, please be aware of agents, AGENTS DO LIE about the property legal details, it's very common, they just want to close the sale and get their commission, they'll never suffer any consequences for their lies. Please be aware of solicitors as well... someone posted on another video that she got a solicitor through a recommendation on an expat Facebook group and got charged around 3000 Euros, when the going rate is around 200 to 300 Euros. A notary, which is registered with the government and acts to uphold the law / legal process for the government, charges around 300 Euros for the transfer of deeds. Solicitors have less reponsability than a notary. A good way to find a good solicitor is to ask any notary in the area you are buying. Notaries do know solicitors well as they work with them every day. They also know which ones to avoid... but they can't tell you about those, of course.

    Your pretty funny. Talking about not having a Portuguese bank account how do you pay property tax? Walk up to the office and pay ? And another crazy thing I keep hearing is others using your land for sheep or something else, I would hate that. He’s probably been doing it before you got there but you own it now. On another off grid show I watch they had ppl hunting wild boar in their backyard so you would hear gunshots. He had to run over without getting shot and asked them to get off the private property. It’s crazy how they just walk around not giving a beeeeep. Anyways love your videos keep it up. Sorry I don’t know your names yet.

Regarding the grazing of sheep on our land, when we bought the land and the farmer came on with his sheep as he was used to, he did check with us if we were ok with him continuing and he did also say that he will stop if we don't want him to. In our case it's actually beneficial for us if he continues as he is in a way looking after the land for us a little whilst we're not there. He's also one of the nicest people we have ever met. Regarding hunting, you need to remove your property from the hunting map and also place appropriate official signs on the borders and it should then stop. Of course I don't know where you're from etc, but personally speaking from our side, I think there are some cultural differences to get used to but in our experience the Portuguese people are very welcoming and polite 😉 New video coming in 2 or so weeks, in the meantime feel free to check out our blog, link in the description 😉
