  • Our journey continues and this video picks up from our B&B in the north western tip of the route. We were able to charge at all of the places we stayed at and our hosts were wonderful at every stop!

    So many questions.
what time of year did you do the trip, I may have missed that little bit of information?
From a charging perspective, were you able to charge at many of the hotels or did you use public chargers and if you had to were they in reasonable locations and fast chargers?
    cheers

We did it in October so it was quite chilly most days and rained most of the way as well. We chose our accommodation partially based on where we could plug in overnight, at some places it was a designated EV charger and at some it was using the 3 pin granny charger. I have linked to some of the places we stayed at in the descriptions to the two videos from the trip. The B&B that we stayed at by Achriesgill for example was a granny charger through the window overnight so make sure that your hosts are aware that you would like to charge overnight, some will let you some won't. We didn't book anywhere that didn't allow charging. Also if you are going to be using a regular plug then make sure you know how to do it safely.
We used repid chargers throughout the trip as well and had hardly any issues, only one location let us down and that was at Torridon but even with that we had enough power left to get us to the next rapid. Planning is key though, check the status of the charger you're heading for before you go there and check recent comments on ZapMap. It doesn't take long and is worth doing. All chargers were in convenient places for us.
Feel free to ask if you have any other questions. What car are you planning to do the trip in?

Hi, thanks for the information, it's good to know it is actually possible to do the NC 500 in an EV. We've been wanting to do it for a while and just moved over to an EV with theoretical range of 262 miles but in reality closer to 170 in real life.
How many days did it take you and how long was your journey to get to the start?

Our e-208 has on a bad day range of 100 miles if things are really against us so you shouldn't struggle at all, we certainly didn't. The key to making it as smooth as possible is to book accommodation where you can charge overnight so that you start with a full battery or close to it and choose your rapid chargers based on recent feedback on ZapMap.
You could do it in just two or three days if you really wanted to just sit in the car and drive at the speed limit all the way, but we wanted to take our time and stop every now and then. We budgeted a week for the trip and I think it's a good amount of time for it, you can do it quicker and slower, we could easilly spend a month on that route and not be bored one bit.
