Jeep joins Horsa Glider for Market Garden 80 commemoration
As our tribute to the largest Airborne Operation of the Second World War at that time, we wanted to display a Jeep, ready for air-lifting, alongside our original Airspeed Horsa glider exhibit. The Horsa was a British troop-carrying glider used during the Second World War. It was developed and manufactured by Airspeed Limited (a subsidiary of de Havilland Aircraft Company), and was named after the legendary 5th-century conqueror of southern Britain. The design team led by Hessell Tiltman was based at Salisbury Hall, London Colney, where the de Havilland Aircraft Museum now sits.
The Horsa was capable of accommodating up to 30 fully equipped troops. Others carried a combination of troops and medium equipment, such as the 6-pounder anti-tank gun, or the famous "Jeep" such as the one we have displayed here.
The Airspeed Horsa glider we have at the de Havilland Aircraft Museum is the most complete original example in the UK.
This video is being published to coincide with the 80th anniversary of Operation Market Garden in which hundreds of Horsa gliders participated.
Many thanks to Stuart from the Shuttleworth Collection for lending us his late-war Jeep for the duration of this display.

The Horsa Glider restoration team fashion a new plywood section for later fitting to our unique airborne landing exhibit. Bernie, Terry and Martin shows us how it's done using decades of learnt woodcrafting skill and knowledge. The hundreds of people involved in manufacturing this aircraft during WW2 would have used the same skills and it is worth remembering that this month, September, is the ...

Did you know that de Havilland also built aircraft ENGINES? In the early days of Aviation, having the right engine was essential; they had to be Powerful, Lightweight and Reliable. At first, like many pioneers, Geoffrey de Havilland built his own engine, called the Iris. Later on, he focused on designing aircraft, and turned to Major Frank Halford for the engines. Frank Halford was an independe...
de Havilland's first all-metal aircraft - the DH.95 Flamingo
มุมมอง 11K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
The idea behind the Flamingo was to create a short to medium range transport aircraft capable of carrying up to 20 passengers. At that time the aircraft which could have fulfilled this role would have been the famous DH.89 Dragon Rapide, one of which is currently being restored by the Museum. The Rapide is a wooden twin-engined biplane, and only has space for 6 to 8 passengers. The larger DH.86...

At the de Havilland Aircraft Museum, we have a display consisting of some of the rarest aircraft components in the world. These fragments belong to an aircraft that Eric Brown called “second to none” - the little-known DH. 103 Hornet.
