Lionel doing HO? Never thought I’d see the day. I thought they’d just stick to O scale.
Yes. And more of these please.
I've heard that some have had good results with vape fluid. There's lots of scents available, though perhaps it's best to find one that is nicotine free.
Idk why but I just can’t stop rewatching this video
My Great-Uncle had a wind-up Ives train as a boy (in the late 1910's and early 1920's) and he told me once that it had a smoke function...apparently you were supposed to slip a lit cigarette into the loco and it would create smoke...oh nopw THAT wouldnt fly with anyone today!
The scented MTH fluids will smell better. Burnt batting usually means you don't have a good saturation of smoke fluid. Using a wick batting that wraps around the heating element will yield better results as more surface area of the heating element is exposed to fluid and can generate more smoke but it is important to keep the wicking saturated to prevent burning it. Using MTH smok units with a good installation of smoke wick will yield good smoke on the "LOW" output level and you'll never have a burnt wick. Set it to "HIGH" and you'll smoke yourself out in a very impressive display but the wick won't last nearly as long. I usually alternate between the "MEDIUM" and "LOW" settings depending on how much smoke I want to see & smell.
as a C&O transition-era modeler I am thrilled, just hoping these are quality and good runners. The Kanawha (what the C&O called their Berks) was the main road engine for the C&O in the era I model, and as you pointed out, I have to use 20+ year old proto 2000s with known gear issues and limited availability in terms of road numbers. With these Lionels I will literally double the number of Kanawhas on my roster. Hoping to see more details especially about the DCC-ready models (i.e. do they include speakers already).
The main ingredient in Bachmann smoke fluid is propylene glycol. It's essentially a more concentrated version of theatrical fog machine fluid. Propylene glycol is also used as a disinfectant, so it's about as safe as smoke fluids get. (It's also the main ingredient in vape liquid, although in that case it's usually mixed with glycerin.) I run my smoke units on straight food-grade propylene glycol bought on Amazon - it's cheaper than the Bachmann fluid, performs exactly the same, and seems to have less of a lingering smell.
Hey I have an issue with my only modern engine a 675 it run well but I had it on my older track with my zw and after 2hrs it’s wheels fell off so I turned off the power and after fixing the wheels I turned the power back on and it would not turn on any advice on how to fix it
@@Stubacca16 like is it not receiving power or is the motor turning and not sending that power to the wheels?
@ like not receiving power
@ check your pickups. May be disconnected or you may have fried the command board
Thanks and I love your videos man keep it up
JT Mega has hundreds of flavors and they come out with new runs every year so if you want the best looking smoke and inoffensive smells this is the brand to choose. I got Apple and Pina Colada along with regular coal and oil smoke for my oil burners.
JTs gummed up my early MTH fan motors. Switched to Lionel premium instead. More smoke, no issues. Hot chocolate scent is great in The Polar Express
3:26 that’s why diddy had 1000 bottles of baby oil
Once, at a train show, my friend put way too much smoke fluid into a Lionel prewar scale Hudson, I believe it was, and as it went around the layout, there was this massive white cloud rolling around the layout, even when you couldn’t see the train itself, the cloud was there, and this was the MTH stuff, and some poor kid who was like at the same height as the cloud started coughing and wheezing as the train went by, lol
I've been using JT's Mega Steam exclusively for a decade now. I've used it in steam locomotives from K-Line, Lionel, Marklin and MTH and have no complaints.
The worst part has to be that some people have allergies to smoke fluid. . . It seems to me at least, that the economic and health and smell-wise, best future for smoke on model trains has to be the ultrasonic water vapor systems that are becoming a thing in the uk.
What if I use the same valve oil that I use for my trumpet
3:30 HO scale FA in the background? Teaser for a new video?
At the 3.09/11.25 imagine the JT bottle be careful because the tips on those the ability to put the smoke through it in are very fragile I put it into the engine I must have pulled it out too fast and I noticed glass came off so careful with those thank you
can never forget JT mega steam wins the smell competition because it has so many cents. u can use your trains like an air freshener with this stuff. i got vanilla scented
He broke into diddys for that baby oil
Broadway limited smoke fluid you kind of forgot about that but I'm not blaming
I'll be expecting a review of that legacy gp30
2:42 an HO scale egg liner body how cool
I think the baby oil is kind of a strange one from the get go, but anyway I’m definitely trying to see if I can get into o scale.
Great video! thanks! Who makes the eggliner?
Independent seller in Australia! Just search “ho eggliner” on eBay!
Test Marklin
For HO stuff, I recommend the Marklin fluid or JT mega steam
ive been looking into the stuff that the film industry uses for tiny fog machines and considering the output those tiny machines have, maybe that stuff is perfect for trains. its worth testing, but I dont have any smoking locomotives, so I'll have to make my own, which is stupid cheap.
What about glycerine mixed with a little bit of water? According to leokimvideo that is a good smoke fluid
As someone who grew up with the MTH Proto Smoke scent in the house on a near daily occurrence since dad had a steam locomotive, I guess I'm used to it. I will say though, the Lionel formula has changed since 2008. Me and my brother both got steam sets that year (I got Hogwarts he got Polar Express). The Lionel smoke fluid from those sets created quite the show. Ot was thick, strong, and within a very short time, we had to air out the 40 by 10 by 12 layout room because it was so thick.
3:27 diddy smoke fluid
Bruh 😂😂😂
The only thing offensive about the baby oil is… yeah
Bro got the diddy smoke fluid.
vaping the lionel smoke fluid
I love JTs mega steam. Great selection and doesn't seem to bother my smoke units
Flash points of "Alternatives" is a critical piece of information and I'm glad you mentioned it. I would like to stress that "Less likely" means it still can catch fire. I've seen fire damaged models because someone tried to save a couple bucks on smoke fluid, only to have to rebuy a five hundred dollar engine.
I was wheezing when you brought in the baby oil
When you finish the ho egg liner you need to do an N scale version Conrail.
Let's just hope they don't go for all nylon/plastic gears for amazing looking engines and go with some sort of brass or stainless metal gears. For the price they are, I shouldn't expect to be having gears replaced only after a couple years of an engine coming out. The imported brass Veranda and Challengers had cracked gear issues too for something that isn't more than a decade old.
Looking at the bachmann bottle, that isn't smoke oil, it's Propylene glycol and glycerine. Which would explain why it didn't produce a lot of smoke, the oil based smokers aren't going to be at the right temperature for it. It's basically...vape juice? which I have also seen used in a few smoke units purely for the meme.
I remember being in a panic for lacking smoke fluid for my first steamer. I thought of using mineral oil, but decided to bite the bullet and get the Lionel smoke fluid. Been doing pretty well for me. Also I basically have my mth smoke unit turned off 99% of operations, your statement on the odor is true.
