As for locomotives not recommended for beginners any of the early diecast ones with open frame motors like Mantua or Roundhouse would definitely be on that list. It takes a lot of work to get one sort of running most of the time.

Thankfully I have never had this issue. My railroad consists of underfunded commuter rail systems so there are very few cars for the diesels to pull.

Lionel inc and Mac stuff is underrated and affordable

Until Lionel gets their act together there is only Mantua Red Box "Pro Series" Locomotives to hold them accountable for Dealing them dirty. If there was one thing that I could say is that Lionel is stuck in the dark ages, the Model Railroad Industry has moved onto Realism instead of "Toys" like you said. I don't have anything against Lionel, but the way they are puncturing their brand and making it Gimmicky makes the Carnival Game look more honest. I am sorrowfully Disappointed in Lionel's Business Model, if this is going to be the norm with them. I am not surprised they used Mantua Tooling which I don't blame them for. I would only be purchasing Steam engines from BLI (In N scale) Kato or Bachmann (In HO), and maybe Rapido, Riverossi, & Athearn if they make them cheaper (probably Roundhouse, not Genesis)

It is amazing how detailed the toys that were coming from China were in the late nineties, early 2000s and how inexpensive they were at the time. Nice toys stores at that time had beautifully detailed battery operated and mechanical tin toys in the ten to twenty five dollar range. It was it little, late, golden age of tin lithography.

One of the fun things about O guage is that there are so many options. O guage trains have such a long history that one may choose from over a century of toy trains and they will all run on the same track. There are so many fine products from the long history of Lionel, but there are also great trains, rolling stock, and accessories from Marx, K-line, Pre-War American Flyer, Williams, and so many lesser known makers and it will all run on that track from Menards. It opens up over ahundred years worth of fun for the collector and operator.

These O gauge things don't have a market anywhere else The 1920s track and the whole 3 rail thing is totally unacceptable as well as the rails!!! I do understand the vintage collector thing as a thing, don't understand making updated (better detail, realism) that still runs on what looks like huge girders? Started with code 125 (steel) track 00 just before code 100 became standard (preferably nickel silver) Current is code 83 or 75 - or finer for the light line modelers (HO) possibly code 55. If not purely a collector of vintage -What is the appeal of 3 rail and code ??? 250? larger? Not coming down on you -curious as to why?

That said what I also do is I remove weights from wagons where it’s easy to do so

I still have my father's Lionel 262 steam loco and cars from 1931 that my grandfather bought for him. It runs great, and I love the ozone smell. Ever now and then l'll set up a "Carpet Central" làyout and run them.
