I had an opportunity to get a complete late John Bull set for $20, but I chose the Lafayette over it. I like that they seem to run quite well for their size.
I personally own the Lafayette from Bachman. Although damaged in shipping and being tiny and fragile, I love just as much as you seem to love the John Bull.

I remember seeing this set at a Radioshack in the late '90s or early '00s. Good to see that they didn't use the same design as their 4-4-0s! I had a hell of a time trying to make those run properly when I was a kid. They were not fond of switches--or much of anything, honestly.
Yeah the really early ones weren’t super great. They got a revision sometime during their lifetime before the retooled one came out in 2014-15. The retool is definitely worth picking up. All the same charm with none of the drawbacks!
I got my John Bull from Ebay the front pilot tends to come off easily and is missing the spring. It tends to run fine. Mine must be the older style with the old school horn hook couplers.
Love mine, never ran it, sits on the shelf as a display piece. But its a nice little nod to the fact the train Club I VP is situated a block from the Bull's stomping path.
Trix makes a "Der adler" set every once in a while Der Adler was Germany's first steam loco and Piko makes a "saxonia" mixed train set featuring another very early loco, the Der Adler looked similar to the john bull, there is a operational replica built in the 80's I think.
I have always wanted to get the Bachman Jon bull but I have not found 1 yet and Bachman definitely did a great job Designing this model Despite how small it is

Yeah that spring is incredibly important. It’s really the only thing holding the pilot on the rails
