Part 7 French Farm Lyon Salt Production
#edwardsemenjutin
In this episode we are on the way home. Shortly we visited the area where salt collected for the salt production. One which we usually have on our tables. In shops it says Marseille salt on packages. Some of you may be familiar. After that we were passing on the way Lyon and need to find accommodation for a night. May be a bit tired of staying in a camps so we decided to find a hotel on the way. After some search we found one in a pleasant french farm area.

    I watched your Hiker video. HUGE difference in efficiency! I know you don't purge the hose with the hiker, but that's not 15grams of fuel. I have the original Nova with CEJN quick disconnects. It's been a great stove. Only one issue. When I first got the stove and shut the burner valve off while hot it would thermally lock up and I had to heat it up with a torch to free it up. That happened twice before I realized there is really no reason to close the burner valve at all in normal use. Only if you have to shut it off in a hurry, which I've never had to do, but since I'm aware of the issue, if that were to happen, I just have to make sure to open it back up before it cools. I can only guess that the long valve body has a larger thermal expansion coefficient than the spindle. Probably fixed on the later models. It's been a great stove since and though I don't use it as much as I used to, it still works flawlessly.

    • @foxdogcattop
      @foxdogcattop 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes efficiency can be different in different condition. And conditions are nearly every time are different. After some years of usage I am already not counting much how fast. Just need get dish cooked or water boiled. But what I like in Nova burners that when those are on max how they break through the wind and do the job. If to fry something quickly or to boil a water.

    It's a modern 111C? And that's not a bad thing. I wouldn't take it on a month long hike, but if you're base, car, or atv camping or only going short distances, it a great choic in my opinion. Pretty impressive efficiency too!

I already had a Nova and loved it, and had a 111B and a 111T and loved those too, so not a bad combination. The purchase was not approved by the boss, my wife. This was not the hilltop I was willing to die on. I was looking for one of these and a 199. So many stoves, so little time. She rightfully pointed out that I would end up getting 2 of each, as I usually do. One user and one for the collection. In the end, logic defeated me. Haha!

I tried to make something similar to hang my coffee rig from a similar setup, except I was using a large aluminum percolator and using the rig with springs to hold my Coleman Peak 1 550B to the bottom of the pot. It was working great for about 20 seconds until the springs got red hot and stretched to many times their length in a couple of seconds, dropping the stove and the pot fell off between the elongated springs, dumping the still cold percolator and its contents on the ground. Yeah, the gas canister got cold and pressure and output were noticeably lower. Listen here: 1:06 , here: 4:54 and here: 8:28. To be accurate, each test has to start with a canister with the same amount of fuel in it at the same temperature. It makes a HUGE difference with canister stoves. Liquid delivery stoves(upside down canister) minimize this, but still need identical start conditions. The fuel canister simply got colder with each test and produced less gas pressure (Amonton's law) and the fact that phase change in the canister from liquid to gas is endothermic(absorbs heat and gets cold). You can test your fuel burn rate by keeping the canister on a scale and measuring how many grams per minute are being consumed. If you did this test with a liquid fuel stove, to be accurate, you have to wait for the stove to cool down and refill it to the same start weight of fuel and same number of pumps with identical timed start procedures for each iteration.

    • @foxdogcattop
      @foxdogcattop 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      yes you completely right - all components of the test has to be equal and the same - fuel temperature and amount of it, pressure in the canister, temperature of pot metal, external/ room temperature, temperature of water, currents of the air arround of the flame. May be forgot something. But it cone to a scientific test finally. But I am not still sure will the lid increase the boiling time unless it is a lid on a pressure cooker. :)

  • @mikemorgan5015
    @mikemorgan5015 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Well done. I like your real world testing of actual time to use the stove. These are well designed stoves. I was disappointed that they stopped using the dual control generator with the cleaning/regulating lever on the other side. Those are even better in my opinion. Much easier to fine tune the output with them. Identical in power and ease of lighting though. If fuel conservation is important, use a lid for faster boil/heat retention. If you don't want the added space/weight of a lid, use a couple of layers of heavy aluminum foil as a lid. You can fold it up and re-use it MANY times. Please don't forget to close the pump knob after pumping. If your check valve fails or gets something lodged in it, you will lose pressure and possibly get a vapor flame at the pump. Not as dangerous as a stove with and NRV submerged in fuel, but the air stem seal is part of a dual redundant system. Thanks for posting this. I will check out your other videos too.

      Thank you for good words. I just wanted to show the difference between cooking equipment fuel types on sample of Trangia. So the people who thinking which equipment to buy could have an idea. I personally like gasoline. But disadvantage of it for indoor use preferable an alcohol priming.

  • @koffibanan3099
    @koffibanan3099 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey, my experience is wildly different: kettles are equally fast and a lid makes it boil a lot quicker. I think the gas pressure got lower during the test, because the canister got depleted + the canister got cold from all that use. If you were to repeat the test, you'd need to use a fresh canister each time; or just use the alcohol burner, but then leaving it to cool completely before each test. In any case, these "lab" tests don't really mean that much when your camping. I have an Optimus Nova (older Swedish made model like yours I believe), which I have an adapter for to put inside the trangia with some fiddling. The standalone Nova boils water much faster indoors, because the pot is closer to the flame I believe. Outside, the Nova is much faster inside of the trangia because of the windshield. But a lid always makes it faster :) Anyway thank you for taking the time! Will you post new videos?

    The new split tubing on trangia kettles are useless, soon as the kettle warms up it spins around on the handle. burning your hand is to easy now, a massive downgrade. I will be making my own that will work as intended.

      Now I understood. You right. That one Trangia call mess tin. I had similar experience with that split tube handle cover I remember. Also I am using often the thin cotton gloves when cooking on different camping stoves. To grab something hot happens so many times to me. So I am wearing gloves for protection.

    Very good video and setup. Please for the stove with silent burner, do not start it, if there are still flame on from priming. It doesn't work the same way like the roarer burner. Not to cause under-burning and damaging it.

    Primus Mimer, due to it's wide head, is'nt maybe best suited for solo hikers. If used with smaller vessels, like a half-liter cup/pot, the flame will go up around it, which makes the stove quite inefficient. Takes more time and fuel. The wide head, however, is very good to have while cooking for a group of people, using bigger, wider vessels. Then the flame is distributed on nice wide area and the heat is more even, helping with the efficiency

      Приветствую, Та ,что у меня в видео, это Maggiolina , Итальянская. У этого производителя ничего надувного нет. У них вариации между моделями по ширине и подъемному механизму и допы. Стенки просто очень качественный непросвечиваемый брезент. Когда светло, то на улице внутри палатки темень. Высыпаешься в ней хорошо. Верх и низ толстый стеклопластик. Верхняя половина с звукоизоляцией от дождя. Очень все с моей точки зрения качественное. Но она тяжелая. Мы ее на крышу машины с парнями вчетвером ставим. Точно не знаю, что вам предлагают. Поэтому если хотите именно Maggiolin-у , то вам предлагают не её. 100%.

    I am not entirely convinced a leather strap is an upgrade. If you’re out for a long time - your kit will get greasy, dirty and wet and pretty soon that strap will be a sticky wet thing. Leather doesn’t really wash all that well - the original strap does. It also does not soak up stuff. Also the buckle system with holes in the leather is less flexible in terms of tightening the set with different amounts of things included or just packed in different ways. The orginal allows any setting. But other than that it’s pretty neat looking, pre-use.

    • @foxdogcattop
      @foxdogcattop ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Leather used for ages and some times this greasy look of a leather add some charm! If to look from practical side yes synthetic strap is a choice. Happy hiking!

      @whynottalklikeapirat ปีที่แล้ว

      @@foxdogcattop I know. I have been making whatever leatherworks I need for years. However - this is light leather. I suspect it’s not going to end up all charming weathered and amber-golden from the stuff that comes off a trangia. The soot will just simply leave grey-black-bluish grimy streaks and smudges and the sticky stuff likely won’t be smooth, shiny and oily, but sticky and greasy in the way of dried yellow-brown food fat, and it’ll come off on your fingers and travel on to other parts of your gear (and you). Not to overly belabour the point, but I have a sheath for an old swiss army knifeI made from a similar piece of leather. I treated it with oil and wax, and it’s perfectly serviceable and reasonably waterproof, but I can shake the feeling that with some of the smudges on, some which happen to be trangia-related it has a strange kind of greying morbid look to it. Maybe in 20 more years who knows - (or I could have just dyed it from the outset and it would have be a little more forgiving). Anyways - just an opinion, thanks for the content it’s a nice looking set, I like the red pan.

    I don't get it! You managed to turn an expensive cook set into a super expensive cook set. So you bought a red handle and then you covered it with leather? What do you do with all your left over bits? You can always recycle them by sending them to me. Otherwise, great video....

    • @foxdogcattop
      @foxdogcattop ปีที่แล้ว

      No man, you understood wrongly. No need to cover one cover with another cover. Red plastic handle can be used as its own. Leather cover can be used on handles without any cover just not to burn fingers. Simple. Also leather cover can be used for camping spoons forks to avoid rattling. So multi-use available what everybody likes. I am not big fan of recycling since prefer things which serves a lifetime. About making expensive already expensive items I do not think that Trangia stands out much in price comparing to other cook sets. As for me my first cook set was Trangia only because when choosing in between others I liked an idea that I get burner wind protection and set of pots in one box. And that was at that time within a budget for me. Later possible to upgrade by type of fuel size of pots and pans. And what I like in Trangia there’s options to upgrade. Anyway thanks you a lot for your thoughts!

    Hi Edward, would you rekommenderas the hard top over the soft top?

    • @foxdogcattop
      @foxdogcattop 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both awnings are good and same regarding ease of setup. Soft case is usually cheaper. But I prefer hard top because it is first of all more aerodynamic. For long distance driving it is important. Then comes that it is easy to keep the hard case clean. You just clean with cloth and soap in a spray bottle or it cleans easy itself on a car wash. Look as new after few years of use. Soft canvas cover will be more complicated to clean and dry. Not sure it will look at all like new after even one travel. Also as a life hack from my part when opened - bottom part of the awning hard box can be used for storage of small camping items. Like lighters, knifes small ropes, cell phones. flash lights and so on. Kind of a shelf which I like to use a lot when I am under an opened awning set up kitchen space.
