Join myself and my brother as we drive, Hike, Climb and stay in a charming bothy in the remote area of Assynt in Scotland.
Setting off at 3 am from Edinburgh we parked up, hiked to the bothy, left our kit and packed lightly to climb Suilven at 710 meters. Not all easy going so watch us as we climb into the clouds.

Big thanks again to my brother for the trip and banter along the way.
I would love to do a kit list but sadly i don't feel the urge to promote any brands for no return. Maybe in the future when brands and makers reach out that will change.

Now that is sad to hear, there must be some people posting where it is and thats the problem in a way. Nice, I’ve done over 50 nights in my Grampian 2 and it’s been a great buy. Survived 60kph winds up at Fort William when other tents were failing all around. As long as you’re careful about touching the ceiling in the morning with the condensation. I use the “rear” vestibule for storing my food as it keeps it off the ground and covered but if an animal really wants at it then it doesn’t have to destroy the tent to get it.

Grampian 2 is fantastic, way more sturdier than many tents. feel very safe in it. You have tested yours in real proper heavy weather and great to hear that. All good tips and advice for all to read, thanks for sharing. Steve 👍

Thanks for the comments, this bothy in particular is a private one and with the respect and wishes of the owner they prefer that people don't disclose where it is. You will probably find that there are many bothies like that around Scotland and some you have to pay a fee to stay in, thats just the way things are so if people get upset, angry or annoyed about it then hey it doesn't effect me in anyway shape or form. Check out the Mountain Bothies Association website there are many bothies in it that you can stay in and all fantastic in there own way. Steve 👍

Hi Steve. WOW, that brought back some great memories for me mate, thank you so much for taking us along. 3 years ago now me and Dad, walked from the car park at Glencanisp Lodge to the bothy and then to the foot of Suilven. It was such a warm day and my Dad was really struggling in the heat so we just sat down had our sandwiches and then walked back. We may not have got to the top of the mountain, and yes, I think it is defiantly a mountain, just look at her, but what an amazing few hours. I made a promise then to myself and Suilven that I will be back. All the best mate. use trekking pole for the rear raised forthe guy line takes the outer from the inner

  • @that_which_is_not
    @that_which_is_not 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Not sure if you’ve seen but a few people use a trekking pole behind the tent, to lift the outer away from the inner. It essentially means that the middle guy line tensions upwards, wraps around the pole and then heads back downwards to the ground to secure it. Might be handy if you use a pole and it would mean you wouldn’t have to mod the tent. Good video btw!

    • @Campingonthewildsidescotland

Hello thanks for the comment, yeah i have used the trekking pole a few time and works a treat. You worded that way better than i did in my other videos so thanks for bringing that up. With the trekking pole in place it still has a bit of sagging at each side or end, nothing major but i have seen patches you bond to the outer and guy line them to pull they bits out so might do that. The tent still functions well without the ends tied out its just being picky i think since i do use the tent alot and probably worth doing for the long term. Steve 👍

Good question, my daughter has the Phox 2 and its a great tents, i guess the Phox has more room to manoeuvre but not for sitting up and you cant cook in the Phox. Bobcat i find has a great door system that gives you a few options on how to open it. Downside to Bobcat its tight for space and rucksack and kit are in the porch area and takes up most of the space there. On a plus for both tents they are both equally solid and can take a good battering in the wind. My choice is the Bobcat only because i like to be able to cook and sit up in a tent. Steve 👍

I agree Tiana, can be a bit of a life saver in some ways but for just general users having simple candles and lighters in the bothy can change someones mental state so i find doing them makes me feel good that others appreciate them. Steve

Sounds like a wonderful night. We have a wood burning fireplace and use it a lot. Helps get through the long Canadian winter. We've had a lot of rain lately, which I love because it makes the fire that much more cozy. Nothing better than adding some good food and good company to the mix. You are a great story teller and we really enjoy your podcasts 😊❤

@@TianaBaker-ej3fl aww really good to hear that, i can paint that picture of the long harsh winters you have. Charlie is great company and gets stuck into helping out and loves exploring different places. Long dark cold wet night with good food and company to share stories and thought are treasured. Its making memories and when you just let the adventure unfold you never know what happens or things you find to make it memorable. Steve

Hi Steve, loved listening to this, very calming and soothing. I’m going to go back and rewatch the video. Thank you mate. I’m hoping to get a wild camp in myself this Friday evening. The first opportunity to use my new camping on the wild side mug. 😀 All the best mate 😀🥾⛰🏕️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Hello Dave nice to hear from you. Thanks very much on doing that, the podcasts go in to a little bit more like describing things and the smells and feelings which is pretty hard to do on a video for time. Its nice to do them and allows people to listen anywhere without being tied to a video. I hope you manage to make many memorable cups of tea and hot drinks in the Wilds look forward to seeing them. Fantastic to hear from you Dave. Steve 👍

Protection of our Highland Bothy Shelters isn't a bad thing. Bothies are a Blessing and could save lives. Any serious hiker would understand the need for geographic privacy. 👣💙🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Our remote bothies have to be protected mostly and some bothies do need protection, care less bothy visitors leaving trash, graffiti, reckless damage, etc spoil it for other more serious hikers but safety n respect for the blessing of remote bothies matters wherever you go. Could save lives. Great video. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👣💙🙏

Hello Elizabeth thanks for reaching out, I do agree and is a shame people leave a mess its not difficult to take it away so its down to education and behaviour. There are a few private bothies they you need to book or not let on where they are. Damage and rubbish stands out more than the scenery which is such a shame but fingers crossed that can and will change. Thanks again for the comment Steve

Hello Tiana nice to hear from you, yeah all the family are well as i hope you all are to. Sounds an interesting thing to do. I am actually away camping with my brother at the end of this month for 3 days but i have thought about some small things to do before that which are not far off what you are saying. I think every bothy is haunted and each have very interesting stories haha. Steve

i have the same tent payed £100 for it a couple of weeks ago and i have been out twice and i luv it buddy and if you want to see that tent in 45 mph to 50 mph winds and in snow check out ant survive the night and you will see it in some bad conditions and happy camping

Hello, absolutely fantastic been out in this a few times now and its as hard as nails haha. Been out in some windy conditions but maybe not 50 mph but that would have been a wild night for sure. I bought some patches to attach to the flysheet corners to pull the tent out a bit. Seen a couple of videos on that to stop the fly touching and give a little breathing space. I will do an up dated video on how that is pitched sometime. Steve 👍
