Hi. Thanks for the review. I have just bought one. Seat doesn't work for me. You mentioned that you would put a video of your seat mods. Will you be doing that or if not can you post some information on how you went about modifying the seat please?
Good video, thanks!
Have you the link for the indicators?
Sorry, but no. The listing I bought them from originally doesn't exist anymore. I updated the link to some others that looked the same. I then got a comment saying they're different, so I've removed the link 😞
2023 1290 SAS 3K miles haven't seen the Preload Adjustment Error - I suspect they may have fixed this in software - probably best to go to dealer to get a firmware update
Nice one, that's good to hear. I upgraded the battery, and I've never seen that error since 😀 All the best.
Where did you get your engine parts
Please let me know
A combination of eBay and Fowlers (fowlersparts.co.uk). Fowlers for the piston rings and shells.
Great review, just got my new Rabaconda last week 😊
Thank you, hope you enjoy it 😊
Hi, what was the point of stripping the engine down, if the compression readings were in spec? If you planned on stripping it down anyway, why do the compression test. Unless it's a TH-cam content thing? I was under the impression that these had chromed bores, is it a good idea to hone those? Sorry for all the questions, I have a 9 e1 I'm in the process of swapping out an engine, after a weird gearbox fault.
Hi, being a project bike I wanted to strip it down to the last bolt and rebuild it, for no other reason than I wanted the challenge. I did a compression test just to give me a steer on the condition of the engine, and so that I can also perform one after I've rebuilt it, hopefully the results are better :) I don't know about the chromed bores, this is kind of why the project has stalled a bit. I've got to a stage where I need to do things I've not done before and I need to start doing some homework. Weird gearbox fault, I'm intrigued, good luck with it.
@motocrad Shame I can't put pictures up for you. Basically, it looks like one of the shifter forks has tried to friction weld itself to one of the gearbox gears. Does look a bit weird, will be stripping down for a neb. Look forward to seeing more of your project too. Cheers.
Where are we at on the rebuild?
Project has been on hold, but now the nights are drawing in it'll be starting up again. It's going to be a mission remembering what went where 😀
@@motocrad indeed on remembering. How are new parts gathering? Hard or easy?
@justinbustin677 So far, so good with parts, thanks. I think all I need now is the original exhaust with headers, and fairing infills. I'm sure there will be other parts as I start to put it back together, but most parts seem to be available on either eBay or Facebook marketplace 😀

Epic video mate.
Thank you. I need to get to Scotland more often. You certainly live in a bonny part of the world 🌎
Glad you put it together!
Hello! thanks for your zx9r videos. Please tell me how much the naked engine weighs approximately, that as you remove it?
Hi, you're very welcome. If I had to guess, I would say it was about 80kg. My engine is still in pieces, so it's not so easy to weigh it 😉
Once the factory seat breaks in, it’s fine. The CRF red on the bike is gonna fade anyway so don’t worry about the colour lol!
Then u ain't rode all day long distance.
@@alexanderwright9064 The longest ride without stopping was about 2hrs. Arse was numb. I see that woman who rides around with the world with the stock seat. You can only get the entire seat through SC now and that’s $350ish CDN. Anyway find that a bit pricey for something that might only be a little better. Take care and good luck out there.
@alelectric2767 Thanks, mate!
I took my 1190 over there today. I didn't get nearly as far up, so I went back down and did it the other way round. Just as scary going down it!
Good on ya, I suspect it's more scary going down. I'll try it the other way round next time.
Just turn on the bike to the open fuel cap.
To get the key out of range message, you have to have the key in your pocket whilst sitting on the bike
Also can you wire in the DRL’s in the LED ones on the front
You can if you get the right LED indicators. I think if you can find them with 3 wires, then the DRLs should still work.
Wh`to the satnav you have pls?
Hi, it's the Garmin Zumo XT. The lockable mount holding it is the Touratech mount.
The worst part is when the fob battery goes flat you can not just put another battery in..... you have to take the bike to a dealer to reset it fuck'n stupid idea
I don't think thats right. I changed the battery in my fob recently. I had been getting a low fob battery warning on the tft. Just swapped out the CR2032 battery and it worked fine 🙂
@@motocrad Ok , i was just going by what the sales person told me while we were talking about and standing next to the 2024 KTM SAS, he told me its a part of the security system set up, and I told him that it sounded like a dumb idea ...
I've just watched your vlog on the navigation, can I ask why, in this video, does the turn by turn only show on your phone and not on the TFT? Thanks
Ahh, good question. It was an experiment to make sure the Zumo XT didn't change the route generated by Calimoto. I'd created the route with Calimoto, then exported it to the Zumo XT. I'd rather use the Zumo XT for a display. Unfortunately the turn by turn instructions on the TFT only work if you're using the KTM navigation app.
@@motocrad thanks for the reply and that makes sense. After watching the previous video, it looked like you were using the KTM app and I couldn't work out what was going on. Thanks again.
I'm currently thinking of buying a 1290 Adv and this has been really useful. Thank you for putting it together.
You're very welcome, thanks for your comment. It's an amazing bike & you'll not be disappointed, best smiles per miles & practical. Be aware though, the 1390 SAS could be announced in the next couple of months.
@@motocrad Thanks for the head's up on the new bike. I've had a 990 Adv and 640 Adv (which I rode to Morocco), and I'm just getting the KTM itch again.
Thank you for the tutorial. FYI the link to the indicators is not correct. I ordered from the link and they are different. Slightly but they don't fit properly. The rubber collar is not tight enough and the piece moves all over the place even with the screw tight.
Thanks for letting me know. The original listing I got mine from doesn't exist anymore, I thought the link provided was the same, sorry for the confusion.
This was very helpful. Thank you.
Thanks, I ordered the same seat red/black so I got to see it on your bike!
Nice one, I hope you like it 😀
I rode it last month on my 411 Himmy, felt like a total amateur like you. 45 years rode riding, off road virgin, even though I'm a good MTB rider.
At least we're giving it a go, I'd rather do it like a noob than not do it all 😄 Riding off road after so much road riding does take some getting used to. All the best.
Thanks for great videos, i was thinking about changing the fairings only and i dont know what happened, i just found myself with fully stripped down zx9r(e1) 😄😄 will do full renovation hopefully finishes one day🤞🏾 im exited to see more videos from you good luck
Hi and thanks for your comment. I feel a bit out of my depth now which is why I think the project has stalled a little. I've watched a few more videos and read various forums and feel ready to pick it up again. Good luck with putting your ZX-9R back together 😄
No its not just leting go handle bars its slways doing it
That doesn't sound good. Have you checked the headstock bearing and front wheel balancing?
The “star” at 12:08 was me. Ace road. Hard enough on my 701 so respect for doing it on an SAS. 👏👏
Haha that's ace, small world, thank you once again 😀 Are there any other more big bike friendly trails you could recommend in the area?
Hello mate where did you buy the contr support for your Dji drone ? Thx
Hi, I've used the Quadlock universal adapter. It's stuck on the back of the dji controller with 3m adhesive. The controller is then attached to the Quadlock handlebar mount like a phone would attach.
Hi, how many miles did you get out of the Metzeler Tourance tyres
Hi, I got around 4500 miles out of the rear. I say rear because I think the front had loads of life left.
Wobble? Is the front fork bearing loose? classic issue on the 2017>
Thanks for the comment, I've heard that before, loose fork bearings. For me, changing the tyres sorted it. All the best 😀
Fair play mate. The biggest bike I've taken over there is an XT660. I've not been keen enough to take my 1290 over there, yet. Well done fella 👏👏👏
Thanks buddy, there was a couple of times I thought I'd made a mistake with the 1290, but then it adds to the sense of achievement 😀
@@motocrad absolutely!! 😁😎👌
Totally respectable ride! I struggled up exactly the same type of conditions recently, and you're carrying at least another 30kg in weight. In terms of keeping momentum, consider the traction control. The KTM offroad mode is very good, but I find its a bit sneaky in scrubbing speed when its very loose uphill so it can be hard to push the bike beyond slow speed mode in some conditions. Traction control can only manage the traction you have. Another tip is invest your traction, when do have grip, push a little harder so you can ease off where theres none. Don't be too scared when you're going in a straight line, and take necessary changes in direction nice and smooth. I'm actually switching the STR out soon, but I agree they are a good all around tire. Bit of limitation in that type of uphill, and in the mud, in my experience, but can definitely be overcome with good technique.
Thank you, really appreciate all the tips & advice, I want to go back now and have another go 😉 Thankfully I haven't been through much mud, but as you've mentioned I think the STR's are better suited to dry conditions. All the best :)
@@motocrad having another go is a really good idea. Tip I was given recently around riding the same track multiple times to become more comfortable riding overall makes a lot of sense. I'd still say they're pretty good in wet conditions, just where the mud is the kind that sticks to your tire.
Couple of pointers - the STR's are def not up to the task - the standard Rally is better as deeper tread but would not be my choice. Momentum and your position on the bike will also make a huge difference - look through any obstacle and you need to be carrying far more speed up hills with your eyes a good 30 metres ahead all the time. By paddling you are unweighting the pegs - this then in turn takes the weight off the rear tyre and lessens grip. Be worth a day or weekend at sweet lamb adventure bike school with the guys there and they'll teach you the skills to get out on the trails safer and easier with a few bike changes. Great road that.
Thanks Rob, what an amazing comment. I thought when publishing this video I was opening myself up for some stick, but this comment is brilliant, great advice and I really appreciate the pointers. I'll take a look at Sweet Lamb Adventure. Thank you once again and all the best :)
@@motocrad great bike btw - I have the R version and love it.
Great vid but more speed like you say but it all takes time and practice and you’ll get there that Ktm isn’t really the right bike for the job I’ve had 3 adventure 2 1290’s and 1190 they are way to heavy for that type of riding for me especially on where you have loose rocks stones it struggles for grip I always said a enduro be better as you know anyway but as you said you’ve got 2 bikes in one and that’s where the 1290 comes into its own on the road I loved them still miss mine so much I’ve changed direction now and bought a new triumph rocket 3gt and loving it but always thinking about another 1290 it’s in my blood you done we’ll mate congrats to you shame about the drone take care ride safe
Thank for the comment Nicholas, I totally agree, the 1290 is not the best bike for the first section of that road, far too heavy. An amazing road though once you get past that section though. So you've got a Rocket 3GT, beautiful bike, I'd love to add one of them to the stable ;)
@@motocrad you should it is a beautiful bike in my opinion 23 plate I’ve got 45 miles to do till it’s done 1000 miles so another 200 miles and I’ll call it run in the torque is amazing and I haven’t opened it up fully yet so comfy and smooth also get on you certainly won’t regret it take care
Great vid pal some stunning footage too. Looked sketchy nice job 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Jay, yep, it was loose in places but worth the effort.
What’s the cost of those tyres
I bought them from Demon Tweeks, £151 rear, £109 front. I can't comment on the longevity yet, but loving them so far.
@@motocrad how many miles so far did you do Spain on them ??
I did just under 1500 miles on the Spain trip. When filming this I'd done around 2000.
@@motocrad I’ll have alook into them
It was Jay that got me onto them, I think he's on his 2nd or 3rd set.
Please don’t hone these cylinders I’m 90% sure these are coated
Let me know if you’re not past the point of no return or if you have any questions. I’ve had my 2001 for years and completed much of this work. FYI with th3 valve maintenance complete I got 210/210/220/220 on my compression test. These engines have lined cylinders, they cannot to my knowledge be honed.
That sounds like you're getting great compression. I didn't know that about the cylinders, I haven't done it yet, life has got in the way a little and the project is currently on hold. I'll do some homework before starting the rebuild :)
Good luck too, Ive recently done a zx7r with a jumpy gearbox, bent selector fork. zx9 is like exactly the same looking at its guts.
Personally I think you're making ALOT of unnecessary work. You should have put oil in each cyl first overnight. That will give you a accurate reading. also, please throw your Ali-Express screw in comp tester away, the hose swells and stuffs the reading, as well as not sealing.
Thanks for the advice, I do have a habit of buying Aliexpress crap. Making unnecessary work is what it's all about, I wanted a bike I could strip down to the last bolt and then rebuild. Having said that I've been distracted for a few months and the chances of it all going back together are getting slimmer each day 😉
I would not paint it. Just clean everything. Engine cool down is better without any paint.
I'd not considered that, good point. Thank you 😀
Hello, this is the main key. What is the purpose of the small key?
The small fob is like a backup. If you ever lost the main key, you could hold the small fob against the bike by the forks and still start it. I recently did a road trip to Spain. I kept the small fob in a zipped inside jacket pocket, just in case I ever lost the main fob.
@@motocrad Ok, thank you!
I'm doing this exact same thing to my 2001 zx6r, currently the bike is fully spripped, engine is fully stripped (I'm a qualified engine machinist of 20 years) and have started stripping the paint in the frame for some repairs then new paint, complete engine build, new fairing kit and some aftermarket parts.
They're great to work on, back to basics with the electrics and carbs. Plenty of parts readily available. All the best.
I´ve buyed the indicators but unfortunately don´t fit on my crf 300l.Do you know any adaptador?
I'm sorry to hear that they don't fit. I'm not aware of any adapters other than those for the wires.
