"Great Blue Heron: Elegant and Stately Giant of the Wetlands"
Great blue herons are among our most elegant and stately birds. Standing four feet tall with a six-foot wingspan. It seems the slightest breeze will carry them aloft on outstretched wings. They have been termed gentle giants of the bird world, but as hunters they are precise killers, using lightning speed to thrust their daggerlike bill into an unsuspecting fish. To me, they are simply another beautiful creature that uses its natural skills to stay alive. Wild Journey Films heads into the wetlands to capture this towering waterbird at work. In the springtime, these solitary wetland hunters come together in sometimes large colonies to build their nests high in the treetops. When the eggs hatch, the heron "rookery" takes on a raucous, noisy atmosphere as squawking youngsters incessantly scream for food. It's a magnificent place to just sit and watch as adult great blue herons come and go with food.

The dense stands of cattails are home to one secretive marsh bird after another. The Virginia Rail and Sora fit into this category extremely well. "Black Tern: Jewel of the Marsh"

The black tern is a small, graceful, swift flying tern of the marshes. In summer plumage, an adult's head and body is shiny black with silvery gray wings and tail. A stand-out among a world of white terns. I think of them as "jewels of the marshes." Wild Journey Films follows this elegant tern as it darts and dashes around the shallows. Chattering and chirping as they forage on the wing for ins...

I live in far SW Wisconsin, close to Dubuque, Iowa! And for the past three years we’ve had (?) tundra swans ( I think) that seem to be possibly nesting just north of where I live?( closer to Biscobel? Close to where the Mississippi & Wisconsin rivers merge?!? Has anyone else noted this?!? Just extremely curious!;) Thanks for the WONDERFUL VIDEO!!:)

I suspect that they are trumpeters, or possibly mutes. But your question did make me think about tundras possibly nesting here, so far out of their range. I talked to Sumner, the fella who headed up the trumpeter reintroduction project. He said the only possible nesting tundras in Wisconsin was in 1954 in Onieda County. The only report in 150 years. The report also states that the swans might have been sick. Unable to move north. As I always say, "never say never!" Thanks for watching.

Great stuff. Love the shot of the Bald Eagle babies and the shots of the Great Horned Owl. You mentioned the bluffs of the Mississippi; I live in La Crosse WI so I get to see stuff like this in the fall/winter migrations in places like Trempealeau State Park and Goose Island Park. Very pretty and captivating time of year for birding.

What a “Magnificent” Video! I enjoyed every minute of it. What a beautiful location and footage. To get the opportunity to witness all of it is something very special. But to capture it all to share is even better. My opportunity to catch moose behaving naturally and not on woods roads and such is rare. But to see them feeding, rutting, rubbing and nodding off..is just Awesome! 😊👍

I think my favorite bird. I have noted that when the temperatures get below about 15˚F (-10˚C) they quit cruising to search for food and begin perching on a high spot. I suspect that the reduced success is countered by avoiding the loss of body heat cruising through the frigid air.
