- Black bears can den in many different places. In the base of a hollow or uprooted tree. In caves or rock cavities or under a brush pile, to name a few. But sometimes one will construct a "ground nest" which actually resembles a large bird nest. After watching a mother black bear raising four cubs in a ground nest hidden within a winter swamp, I witnessed a setting that portrayed comfort, coziness and warmth surrounded by snow and cold. The four energetic cubs feeding, sleeping, wrestling, playing and growing under the shelter and care of mother bear.

Just amazing. I never knew bears made ground nests. But how lucky are we to get to see such innocence and beauty. How anyone would think hunting these animals is something profound. Look at all we lose by killing nature in the name of hunting. Live and let live I say.

@@shannongogal8840 LOL I never heard about that in my life. Also people who hunt for sport are the worst type of people. You can hunt for food I completely understand that but when you start hunting for sport you're literally a psychopath. Also you should not be allowed to hunt endangered animals. Which I'm pretty sure you can't. There is absolutely no reason you should be hunting bears.
@@mothyhtx BTW there is no such thing as "sport hunting" . Hunters who will hunt for the oldest biggest animals is SELECTIVE hunting . They take the oldest animals out of the herd which have very little life left. Taking out the old ones and letting the young breeding stock live helps the herd flourish. You call this " sport hunting" or " trophy hunting" . Its proper game management. Why take out young animals with many years left to breed ???? once again YOU are clueless.

When I came across this bear a few days before Christmas, she lifted her head out of the snow-covered ground nest to take a look at me. On Christmas day I could hear the subtle chattering of new cubs. As the season wore on, I spent nearly every day nearby watching. When the snow started to melt around the nest of canary grass and branches, exposing the growing cubs and momma bear, we knew each other fairly well and I was confident that this bear was comfortable enough for me to begin camera work near the nest. It was one of my greatest experiences in the wild. Less than a mile from my home.

In the future you should put some bales on the side couple 2 levels of bales and put some plywood over the top and then a couple bales on top of the plywood. And make a small entrance Like an igloo with a curve with bales. My dad used to make a Fort like that for us

If I’m correct she won’t kick them out for a couple years
They will spend another winter together, but it will be in a different den. Spring flooding completely wiped out this den site. It happens every spring in this wooded swamp so throughout the upcoming warm season momma bear would be checking out many locations for their next hibernation.
I only pray that they don't become preys of the human beings.
It must be so cozy and worm to sleep in mother bear's lap!😴🐻

How did you manage to get such close footage of them?
After a few visits to the site, I could see that momma bear was tolerating my presence very well. So, over the next few months we got to know each other a bit. Black bears are not aggressive unless put in a situation where they have to be. Once I found a good position for filming, that's where I always stayed.
