  • The northern harrier, commonly referred to as "marsh hawk, chooses the vast open bog to hide its nest in this full-length video depicting its life during the breeding season. This open country bird of prey is usually seen cruising low over the ground as it hunts for prey such as small rodents and birds. Being light bodied and buoyant, this sleek raptor is capable of spending nearly 70% of its daylight existence on the wing during the nesting season.

Only harrier documentary I have found and a genuinely well done and gorgeous video. I'm impressed and grateful. Harriers have been my favorite bird since I was a child.

Just saw them in the field across the road, didn’t know what they were at first, here in rural western Oregon, east of I-5, south of Portland, north of Salem, about 600 ft elevation. Beautiful video, Thank you!

I think my favorite bird. I have noted that when the temperatures get below about 15˚F (-10˚C) they quit cruising to search for food and begin perching on a high spot. I suspect that the reduced success is countered by avoiding the loss of body heat cruising through the frigid air.
