Any tips for painting chair rail? Should I follow the baseboard painting guidelines? Thanks!

So you could tape it up like the baseboard or you could tape it like the vertical runs, you would simply bring the tape onto the top of the rail like the edge of the vertical trim taping. The later will probably look better because if you roll the tape up on the wall like I do the base, the ultimate paint line might not look super straight. When you roll up the tape on the baseboard itself, it’s so low to the ground that it’s really hard to see if the line is not super straight. If you tape it like the vertical runs, you can control the line better. I’m assuming there is no wainscoting below the chair rail? If you are going to tape the lower edge using tape, that might be problematic as sometimes the rail profile edge is very small and hard to tape to; in this case jut do the best you can. I will assume that the bottom edge will not be as noticeable so if it’s not perfect, it won’t be seen easily anyway. Sorry if this is too much information, let me know if you need any clarifications. Thanks!

Hi Dave, have learned a lot from your channel, I have a query for you...I am painting wall rails gloss, my issue is getting a cut in line from the wall transition (Matt Paint on the wall) to the rail (Glossed) I don't suspect you can seal tape with gloss then use matt over it to get the cut in line? my thoughts is the tape will tear up lumps of the gloss paint because its thicker? hope I explained this correctly

On my end, it usually doesn't matter to me the gloss levels. If you are worried about it, here are a couple of things to keep in mind; 1) if you use the gloss to seal the tape, don't put the gloss paint on thick, try to keep it as thin as possible, just enough to seal the tape...make sure that the gloss and the finish matte finish are completely dry before you pull the tape, the harder it dries, the better it will pull. 2) you could try sealing the tape with a lower sheen paint that is exactly the same color as the gloss paint, this is hit or miss, as you might (it's rare, but it happens) notice the lower sheen in small areas.
If you have the time to test it, I would try sealing it with the gloss, just try it in a small area. If I think of anything else, I will give you a heads up.
      Thanks!

Great Dave thank you, makes sense to keep it thin. I will manage that no problem, when I get to it I will do a couple of test runs see how I get on with it. You are a great help love all your videos they have been very informative to me. keep up the great tips!

Yeah the tape it’s a lot better because your house settles no matter if it’s brand new or not my house is only 10 years old and a friend of mine he was a custom paint or for over 20 years and he freaking cut the room and lie I was rolling the ceiling and I mean the walls and then I painted my family room and my buddy taped and he showed me a good way to do it and I was really straight but then I seen the way you do it I haven’t tried it yet but I’m about to tonight I’ve never seen a tape like that and it’s great because you only have to tape it one time I will put a tape on the ceiling for the wall annotate 104 for the ceiling don’t give me wrong it comes out good but it’s a lot more time when I was younger I can fly through that stuff and 44 now so it’s not as easy getting up and down and planks ladders I use yo fly because I learned in apartments so we had to be fast I’m actually still pretty fast but not as fast as I was when I was In my 20s people would be shocked how fast we were paying the unit but we sprayed the flat and roll and cut the semigloss so literally after the unit was prepped it will take us a half an hour to paint it

decorators U.K. never used tape guys years ago never used tape don't even use tape on skirts with carpet see a lot of decorators on you tube using tape now must take them ages and cost them lot more through out the year and it's i find it strange you guys across the pond insist on painting the woodwork before the walls making it harder for yourselves.

I disagree that painting the trim last is the most efficient way to paint; in my opinion it is much easier to cut in the wall paint to the trim than it is to cut the trim in to the wall paint.
As for taping, you're correct, it is slower, but I think taping looks much better. Also, this channel is meant for novices, not professionals. Teaching someone with little to no experience to cut in freehand is not practical to me. Cutting in well by hand takes a lot of practice.
Thanks much for the comments, always interested in how others do their craft!
