Carnarvon Gorge- QLD's Hidden Gem | Where to Stay, What to Do
We've been trying to get to Carnarvon Gorge for years. We are now kicking ourselves as this place has to rank in our top 3 destinations in Queensland! The epic walks, where you can do as little or as much as you want. Epic accomodation options and world-class sites along the 22km round hike make this place well worth a week of your time.
In this video, we also found our very first platypus in its natural environment, making the whole experience even more special. We have been chasing them for years as well, so on our third attempt this trip and very early in the morning, we finally found one.
Here's the details on places featured in this episode:

    Hi We are interested in the Lowdown. Just wondering how much ground clearance is reduced as compared to the Stealth 12? Also the drawbar and hitch appear to be lower than say the stealth 12. I would add a fire pit, waterproof wood bag, tomahawk and hand saw for a fire on cold nights. Also vital in colder weather particularly Tasmania is a 12 volt electric blanket to warm the bed. Uses very little power and makes a diesel heater unnecessary. A waterproof jacket is vital. Also a good pair of boots. We also carry six clamps to hold the anti flaps in place if it gets windy. Our van has also been fitted with a Cowfish mobile phone signal booster which puts out 4G and 5G wifi. This means we don't need a smart TV as we just receive wifi on our devices. We also fitted a Gripsport bike rack to the front of our Lowdown and our bikes go everywhere with us.

      Some interesting innovations. We only have 2 x 190 watts of solar but it's enough to keep the Enerdrive 200amp lithium battery charged. We've been on the road since December and went 56 nights in Tassie without plugging into a power point, so the solar works. Ours is the bunk model so we use the single bed for storage in bags.

It had a little seat on the back that I ‘made’ out of zip ties and stuff from the bin… it was heaps of fun, but the bike took up a lot of space in the canopy. Because we don’t own our vans (we test different models for Jawa) we don’t make any modifications. On both our laps as well, we found places where bikes are handy, there is always an option to hire them. So personally we find the expense of modifying our setup and the PITA it is to take them down and them rack them up, that paying a few bucks to hire is the way to go. We did that in Margaret River, on Rottnest Island and a couple of other places

    • @empty_nestadventures
      @empty_nestadventures 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks. It’s a tough question…. I don’t think it’s too heavy, but depends on your tow vehicle/setup and how much experience you have. Another potential issue with the beach, is generally there is a tight track with low branches to get to your campsite, so the solid roof will limit you. The 2024 model isn’t much heavier than any other poptop of similar size. It’d be fine as an example for the campsite south of Indian Head on Fraser, but I wouldn’t take it up to Waddy Point. I wouldn’t take it to Main or Flinders on Straddie, again because of the height, not the weight.

    Hi guys just a quick question the vehicle bt 50 is it capable of towing the larger Jawas I’ve been on the researching for a powered 4x4 off roader and looking at the Mazda you guys drive it’s only a four cylinder is it under powered? Or is it enough to drive on road and off road comfortably as I’m thinking about buying a six cylinder to be sure…luca..

    • @empty_nestadventures
      @empty_nestadventures 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi mate. We’ve been towing 12 different Jawas with the old BT. Largest being the Tarwarri 18. Firstly, I’ve never had any concern on power, however I have tuned mine. Did make a difference to both power down low and improved my fuel economy. The 4JJ3 motor is pretty bombproof. The most important consideration is GVM and GCM. Even though 3.5T tow capacity is advertised, with the modifications I’ve done and the GVM before ball weight is about 2900 with Dee and I in the car. So when ball weight is added, we do go over standard GVM, but I do have an engineered suspension upgrade. We also sis close to 5950 fully packed in a larger van, so couldn’t have a Tarwarri at its ATM of 3500 with being over the GCM…. So no power probs, but need to watch how you’re going to mod your 4x4 and how much you’ll pack. We’ve learnt to pack light anyway, so a Commander, or Retreat, or Sirocco Grande is all good for us in terms of legal weight

    Like you we love a good coffee when on the road. We've found a Bellman to be brilliant. Works on induction, gas and stove top and has a milk frother built in. It's lightweight and paid for itself in no time. Also love our C gear mat. We've been using ours for at least 8 or 9 years and still looks new.
