    After almost 40 years in this business I've earned my grumpy old soundman badge. My clients know I'll give them the best sound possible but also know that I wont stand for anyone's crap. If you're rude to me or my staff you'll get promptly put in your place. Usually I get told im rude when people are talking to me but it's almost always when im in the middle of something or trouble shooting and I just ignore them. haha I've gotten to the stage where I hate when there isnt a large barricade around foh. I've even had people ask for the lights to not be flashing because it could trigger a seizure, i just laugh and point to an exit.

      There is certainly a time...especially when you are there to do a job and someone is clearly in the way of you being able to deliver...that's when there is absolutely no time for the nonsense.

    One of the things I like with a flexible PA approach is exactly what you have mentioned. One of the approaches I have made a few times in the past is to deploy the same amount of PA, but spread it out a little. I have an event coming up that will be in a room with a 480 person capacity. The room is fairly narrow, and long... I could put all the PA at the front and open the throttle, but I've decided I'm going to put delays in the room. I won't need to push it so much to get the coverage, and I won't need to run it so hard. On the flip side though; if the crowd is a rowdy bunch, I can still open the throttle.
    In regards comments, I have noted a lot of people know better (or think they do) when it comes to how to do sound and lighting... I do the same as you folks; I shake it off, at least most of the time. At a couple of events, I have had a persistent moaners, and in that situation I speak to the person who's paying the bill to get their take. An on one occasion I was told "if that person comes back, tell them to piss off", which unfortunately I had to do. Ultimately, the person was ejected from the event... It was a festival, lots of drink (and I suspect other substances involved too) but in my view, that's no justification for being an ass. I do my best to keep my cool and be professional at all times, but sometimes, enough is enough...

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks John - we have put delays up for a gig too. If that is something we do, my assumption is that we came in with that plan in mind. There is a line with people for sure...your comments made me think about the additional personal element that we hav...there is crossing the line, and then there is the "that's my wife you are talking too!"...which has a lower threshold.

    Another great job team. Having worked at a number of extremely large venues with multiple loading bays, many different sized and positioned function rooms, conference centres & tradeshow halls - not to mention sites with other AV companies, catering crews, construction crews etc (all working at the same time), there are a few things I learnt:
    * Determine which is the nearest loading bay (point) to where your show is. * Establish if you can leave your vehicle in that spot during the show or if there is a parking spot nearby. * Place a laminated sign by the front dashboard with something like "Audio Crew - Chief Ph:XXXX" in case your vehicle is tampered with or needs to be moved. (Especially if you have no company signage). * Make contact with a security guard or someone of authority to confirm who you are, where you should be & what you are bringing in. * Also, see if all the doors are open or if you can be given a key / security pass or assigned an employee to escort you. * For new locations - send relevant pictures & instructions to the rest of the team (or band) about load-in / function room etc. * Have a paper-based list of key contact people (along with the running sheet) in case the power goes out, your battery goes flat or someone steals or damages your phone. * When relevant, have some form of ID badge / lanyard, uniform or business card handy to confirm your identity. Especially handy for large venues or gigs where you may need to move between floors, buildings or function spaces.

    First of all Happy New Year to The Sound Couple.
    This was a very interesting, informative, educational, and helpful video. The multiple camera angles during load-in and set-up greatly increased the learning opportunities. No doubt this also likely increased Bart’s time invested in editing the video-but from my perspective, that time was well-spent.
    It was very helpful to watch Bart use the frequency coordination software from Shure. And, I spotted a master wireless antenna in use for the first time in a video.
    Those of us who want to improve our own professionalism in production always benefit greatly from watching Bart and Stacy share with us their many years of experience.
    As always, a giant “Thank you!” to The Sound Couple for taking us with you for this gig.

    I watch a bunch of your videos, and being a native of the twin cities its cool to watch you guys work, currently were in NC. Quick question, I see you guys run dual subs L and R out of curiosity, why not run them in the center for better bass coverage, also without running them in cardiod mode how do you keep low end from bleeding on stage? You guys are great keep up the good work!

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Cool! Glad we can bring you some snippets of home! To answer your question, our approaches in part, are made up of some factors...1. What is the problem and what are trying to solve? 2. Does it make our job easier? Is the solution practical and present itself well? Answer: 1. We don't recognize a consistent problem 2. It wouldn't make our job easier. 3. For corporate/wedding type event, it doesn't present itself as well, takes up more space, and creates more clutter with stands, cables, etc.. I can't imagine us plopping a sub in the middle of floor at corporate/wedding gig for it to become a convenient drink table? We have never had any musician complain about too much low end...in fact, with more and more bands we work with on in-ears, they like the bleed from FOH! For bigger outdoor shows, we will use center subs for additional support.

    Great Job on another video, i truly appreciate your commitment to helping people in the sound community. I have a question about the CDL12's. I currently run the QSC K12's but one of them is dying on me. Looking to upgrade to the CDL12P. My question is in some bars we play, they are narrow and speakers have to go against the wall. With the Wide dispersion on the CDL12P, have you run into issues in a narrow room? Or feedback issues with the wide dispersion? Also, from one sound company to another I would love to have some insight on what to charge people in my area(Michigan). I know you guys use Shure but have you ever used Sennheiser units? I have a IEM G4 unit and they have their Wireless Systems Manager program that is similar to Shure's Wireless Workbench. I've struggled getting mine to actually do frequency scans or spectrum analyzers. Figured I'd ask here since you give great detail on your setup and would love going into new venues, running a scan, and then get myself and bandmates on a nice clean band. Any help is appreciated :). Great video again and happy new year!!

      We are heading into our 4th year with our CDL's. Definitely recommend them as you can see from our hundreds of videos. That said, it's about what speakers work for you. These are versatile speakers but with our system, we don't expect concert level sound and coverage....we can get pretty close using our lifts. We have done shows like your example, but there are other factors such as the acoustics of the the room, style of music and volume of the band.

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Greg....That question has come up over the years from others. The ideal answer is yes, but for us, no. In our experience, the IEM's are a technical solution with more mental impact to the performers. Our theory is that monitors are easier to blame and IEM's can be more work for the musicians, but usually better with better results. However, they need as much, or more attention than monitors for us to support...we wouldn't feel comfortable sending a band out with packs and wishing them good luck.

      The reality is that PreSonus is pioneering the advancement of AVB in pro audio. Probably a journey that some of us weren't expecting to join them on...but if you have the gear, you are. Personally, we are seeing the benefits, but there is no doubt that there have been problems, and definitely issues with older firmware. We have had the same issues and it can be really frustrating. Our advice is you need to dot all of your I's and cross your T's and then you need to invest some time into your gear to see if you are able to resolve....absolutely imperative that you are on the latest firmware (all components you own) and you have the recommended cables....and even with that, switching cables again to see if you still have the issue...TEST, TEST TEST!! If and only if, you have done everything possible to rule out the issues, and you still have problems, I would open a support ticket and work it until you are satisfied....That said, if you are out of warranty, etc. I can only say that In this day and age with anything you buy..it's really important for you to take the responsibility to ensure you are working within warranty periods and resolve issues before it's too late! We can confidently say our system has been rock solid....but that was even after replacing some cables that were working and then became problematic. Hopefully PreSonus will go with another connector supplier on the next generation of gear.

      Per Shure specs, it can range between 10-30mW (depending on region). Not sure how that works....They are getting more vocal about it too!

      Here is our response from another thread...hope this helps!
      At our target client level perspective, we see two basic approaches. Go after the event or work for the band. Our model has been working with the bands in need...The money may not be like the event money, but the work is there. As you can see, we have low operating costs to keep our cost down so the bands can afford us and we still make money. Then it spins around from there and can lead to getting "events". Per band recommendations, we are in the process of trying to secure a couple of "events" for this year. Finally, our location is primed for live music...go a couple hundred miles in any direction from us, the market changes and we see more sound people working for the event because there just isn't as many bands that need sound. Out there, you will also find more bands running their own sound. Our band clients are typically working with higher budgets and can afford to offload production. Hope this helps!

      @@thesoundcouple I'm in the range north of you. Everyone up here prefers to use their own makeshift PA systems. Most sound hiring is done through "Music General". Leaving the rest of us independents picking up the scraps.

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yep...the market definitely changes more out of the Twin Cities...but it's changed here as well. More bands and venues were in need of PA in years past, now a lot of venues have them or they are contracted through a company to lease or provide them so bands use those. Honestly, the wedding market has really saved us the past few years and a few key clients.@@XIIMonkeysMusicGroup
