Playing chess until I hit 2000: Day 272
#chess
This is day 272 of my journey to get to a rating of 2000 on chess.com.
Very happy to get into these games and play some SOLID chess! The French in game one was unexpected, but I think I played very solid apart from my blundering moment, so it's just what it is, the other two games which were a Jobava and a Dutch were a lot of fun, although I made a mistake in the dutch I'm thankful my opponent didn't spot it!
So far on the series:
239 wins 32 draws 197 losses

#chess This is day 271 of my journey to get to a rating of 2000 on chess.com. I really like playing aggressive chess, but I'm still not playing solid enough with black. I need to figure out some better lines against e4, and I'm going to be booking up on playing against weird stuff soon. These two games were a Jobava and a sort of Taimanov game! 11:13 I think the main issue was that you decided to overprepare your position before making a responsible move. That led to you playing Qe8, because you didn't want to have your pawns doubled. You sort of overcooked your position. You should have played Bb5 or even better Nb5 right away, the position was already ripe.

    • @Blunder_Man
      @Blunder_Man 14 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Yes .... This is true!! I could have easily simplified a few moves prior as well... Yes, I need to also be willing to just give a pawn for simplification. I was already so ahead

    Since you're talking about playing the French more often I thought I'd offer some ideas based on the first game (just my humble opinion), hopefully they'll be interesting. At 1:20 when your opponent played e5, the best engine move was Bf5 which makes sense because it gets the often terrible French bishop outside the pawn chain. The only thing you sometimes have to watch out for is Qb3, targeting the pawn now weakened by the bishop moving, but in that position it doesn't work. Similarly, the dark squared bishop is super valuable in these lines, which is why the computer didn't like Bb4. Sure, there is the Winawer variation as you talked about where it gets traded off, but in that variation you give white doubled pawns. Here there is no c pawn so trading on c3 would just help white by giving them a c pawn to solidify their center.

    • @Blunder_Man
      @Blunder_Man 15 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Yes... I had thought of the bishop outside the pawn chain after going through this game's review more in depth. However I hadn't seen that my other bishop move was so bad. That makes sense. Only bring it out if you can double. Got it

    Hey Owen! Pretty nice games today. Just a little tip that in the smith-morra gambit, declining the gambit with Nc6 is generally not all that great, as it transposes to what is also considered a subpar variation in the alapin (e4 c5 c3 Nc6 d4 cxd4 cxd4). I think instead you could accept the gambit, or if you want to decline it, you can play 3. d5 or 3. Nf6, both of which transpose into 2 of the alapin mainlines, essentially any move that isn’t accepting the smith-morra will transpose to an alapin.

    Congrats Owen this was fantastic chess today!! Bit sad you didn't see Rxh2+ queen is forced to take and then Nf2 smothered mate. The taimaniv honestly looks like a very nice opening, I've been playing the french but it's a bit too passive and solid for my style, so I might give the taimanov a shot, these bishops look delicious
