Safety Professional in his 40's loses his marbles and decides to switch from cage to motorcycle. This will be a mix of motovlog, travel vlog and talking about my journey into motorcycles. I'm a relative newbie to motorcycles so you get to follow along as I learn and explore life on two wheels. The plan is to get rid of my car after a while, once I figure out solutions to my day to day needs. This is made further complicated by my choice of bikes.
My current ride is a 2020 CB300R. I live in south Texas, so the weather is fairly cooperative in this plan.
I'll talk about gear I like or dislike, observations about things that I found interesting as a rider or at least a rider at my skill level (which obviously changes over time). I'm not going to shy away from things because they seem too basic or mundane. On the other hand, at times I'll get so far into the weeds you'll want to spray me with roundup.

Staying warm on a motorcycle in the winter.
Heated gear is nice, but expensive and annoying for shorter rides. Here is how a daily rider stays warm running errands and commuting to work in chilly temps.
NOTE: Does not apply if “chilly” is much below freezing, go get heated gear and high end riding clothes for those temps.

Some thoughts and questions regarding slipper clutches on motorcycles, and a brief description of what they do for folks who are unaware. Personally, I'm glad my bike has one, and will probably want them on most bikes going forward, but I can understand why someone might feel differently or a manufacturer may leave them off. #boerne #boernetx #youmeettheworstpeopleonahonda #honda #motorcycle #m...

Instead of having frozen hands after a half hour ride, even with winter riding gloves, I'm comfy wearing my mid to lighter weight gloves. The NEW Triumph Speed 400 - Ultimate Small Displacement Retro motorcycle?
When new to motorcycles, I used to be driving along at the highway speed limit -ish and wonder if I had another gear to go up into. There was not a huge difference in performance. And blah, blah, blah, but I figured out that if my speed was 50 mph, and my tach was around 5k then I was in 5th gear. Just remember--- If bike gets to loud, shift up. If it has no power, shift down.
Cb300r is a good stunt bike like a grom but for anything else nah
Which one do u think is better ?
Depends on what you want and how they feel to you. I think the MT07 is a great bike for what it's meant to be, but it's not the right fit for me. I don't find it particularly ergonomic. Other similar bikes suited me more if I wanted that tier of power. Trying to compare the MT07 to the CB300R is like comparing a Mini Cooper S to a Mustang GT. There's a little overlap, but the buyer for one isn't a buyer for the other.
Atta boy 🤜🤛🏽 tell’em 🙌 Great Value & style.
So i narrowed it down between this 300r and a mt03 like everyone else for their 1st bike these days lol....my question is this, i live in pinellas county florida....theres a lot of cars but roads are straugh lt and lights are spaced a little further out in distance, around me i have 55mph highway roads down to double amd signle lane at 45mph limits, but heres the thing, i want to start riding to work bevause the mielage is killing my tacoma, its a 25mile trip each way and consists of crossing over a 10 mileway causeway over water going to tampa whwre i work, speed limit it 60 and people usually do 65 to 75, half the time its also windy....and the highwah getting to the causeway is 55mph amd about 8 miles....i love the look of the honda, but lole the little extra power of the mt03....is it easy to pass cars that are going 65 to 70mph?....and are the vibrations going to make my hands feel like i want to rip them off? Lol awesome video, i was sold on the mt03 for the most part then i saw your video with pretty mjch the same thought process....last thing is the mt03 weighs a solid 50 poinds more, you think thats too heavy for a 1st bike?....Thanks my good man!
No worries on the weight. The MT03 is still a light and easy bike to get started with and will handle those speeds fine.
I appreciate my ‘22 not having a slipper clutch just to understand how a bike works without one-it’s my first and only bike so far-but after 26k miles, I can definitely understand why it would be handy!
I realize its not a fast bike so to speak, but will it pass other vehicles easily? Is the acceleration there when you need it?
Depends on the situation and what you are doing. At 80 up hill? Nope. At 65 on level ground? Sure.
This is the worst and most stupid video I have ever seen
Great review. Thank you
Not everything needs to be on the internet. This is a prime example.
This platform makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the Rebel 300 with the same engine. So much lighter, smaller, and more flickable etc. Thanks for the review!
What about MPG and range??? Why is it the last 3 reviews I just watched don’t mention this. Nice review and you raised valid points on speed and never knew about how good the engine breaking is. Thanks for making this!
Eh, range is longer than you'll wanna be on it. MPG is VERY dependent on speed. If you're doing 80 your MPG/range is probably 1/3 what it is at 45. That's why it's so hard for folks to give numbers that mean anything. At 75 or so on the highway I'm between 45 and 55 unless it's significantly sloped or I'm pushing a crazy headwind. Adding a 20mph headwind is not insignificant. If I'm on the frontage road doing 45-60 I'm anywhere from 75 to over 100 MPG depending on how the hills are and how much I am changing speeds. As a daily commuter, going around 20 miles each way, I get about five days on a tank. There's some errands and such in there, and it'll be a mix of highway and non highway. If I do pure highway when possible I'll get 4 days at most. If I stay off the highway I probably still only do 5, but I'm not looking at a fuel light for the last few minutes of my trip and may actually have 1/4 of a tank left. I prefer to fill up near my house so I don't like to go TO work without knowing I've got plenty of gas to come back on too, even if I do highway both ways and have a traffic jam and whatever.
@@Remymoto Thank you soooooo much for this reply! This is exactly what I needed to hear to help my decision process.
Loved your reply. It's really cool that you have 5,000 miles on your CB300R. It gives me confidence in getting one for myself. I want one for doing the parking lot agility and maneuverability practice I see on those practice drill YT websites. Lesson No. 1 is going super slow in a circle without having to exit early from where I started. Lots of wiggling back and forth with the handlebars. Doing my best to keep my feet on the foot pegs. 317 lbs. is just amazing with adequate power for other rides. I would be safe enough on city streets. I'm doing my MSF BRC in a week. Best wishes on your happy riding experiences !
Up to 17k miles by me on the bike now. Going strong.
Pros and Cons. Pros : Love the weight 317 lbs. wet. Upright seating position. Handlebar placement. ABS ? Slipper clutch. Should be a real safety help and accident avoidance. Cons : Have you changed oil and oil filter yet ? Apparently it's on the lower left hand side down low and mounted sideways. Not smart. It's going to be a mess when you change that filter and drain the oil. I saw a riding review for a bloke in Britain. Have you had to nail the front brakes yet ? His review shows excessive nose dive. His response is to beef up the rear shock and install beefier front forks that are matched. I had seen Honda touting that one fork is purely a spring setup and the other side a pure fluid fork. Bizarre. I want it for it's lightness as I plan to do my Motojitsu agility and maneuverability in tight spaces drills in a parking lot. That is important for my survival. Please tell me about the nose dive issue and the oil issues you are experiencing. Thanks, Bob
I haven't had any real nose dive issues, it's not race tuned or anything, but mine feels ok. I don't normally hammer on the front brake but I have over the past two years and never felt like it got out of sorts. On the other hand, it's a street bike generally configured for a budget price and newbie use, so it's not super firm and sophisticated.
With city/town speed limits I could never understand why people would need a n engine as big as a Harley Davidson
To be fair, the 883 sporty was pretty similar. Totally different feel, but kind of equivalent. That whole air cooled vs liquid, then being about twice the weight with riders on both.
I put 9k on mine… no gear position indicator… ugh… sold it.
I have never understood this. I understand plenty of people feel that way. I just don’t get it. To me that is almost a complete waste of space on the dash. Maybe on par with my average mpg. Not useless, but something I would only very occasionally care about.
Got that one coming too. Wondering if a cardo will fit in there
It should. I am running a cheap non mainstream Bluetooth on mine these days and no issues. About two years in and I am due for a new visor and maybe some fresh cheek pads. I cleaned them recently and it just wasn’t quite enough this time. But if I can get the winter out of it I will probably buy a new helmet and make this the backup anyway. Just feel like something fresh.

Hey! Awesome vids. Exact info and viewpoint I was looking for. Thank you! Quick question as a first time learner rider I’m worried I’ll miss the gear indicator (tells you what gear you’re in) heard this CB 300 doesn’t have one…?! 1. Is that true and 2. Did you miss it? Thanks again!
My understanding is that the US market version still doesn't have it. I don't miss it. It's rare that I'm not sequentially shifting and thus always roughly matching speeds. I consider it mostly a safety issue. If I suddenly change my mind from "coasting to a stop" to "OMG let's get out of here NOW" I'd prefer to be in the right gear. So I usually am downshifting with just a little easing of the clutch to let some engine braking play. I'm not paying any attention to it while just riding around. If I'm at higher speeds I'm in 5th or 6th. If I'm in town it's 3rd or 4th unless my speed is currently coming or going for a stop. Parking lots are usually a downshift to second once I pull in just so I can quickly zip forward if I'm not in a position to stop and a car is pulling out in front of me. It also avoids having to feather the clutch or deal with really low RPMs at those speeds. It's hard to miss going too far and going into first, so if I do I just flip it back up to second before I even change the throttle or clutch.
Unique in it's class, of super low weight.
I like the power on the MT-03, but i like the looks of the cb300r, if it just had the Yamaha engine, it would be the perfect bike for me.

Did you stop making videos? Newest video I see is 8 months ago. Are you still riding the CB300r?
Still riding, this is my primary yt channel though and I have mostly stopped doing anything for the moto channel. I just don't have time for both, I barely have time for this one. I'm still riding. No changes there, no new gear really, either. I've just started up with the EXO Optima jacket again as the mornings are chilly. Loving the Rev'IT RSR4's. Almost another year complete with the bike.
@@BulletsNBrass Right on man, I’ll have to check out BulletsNBrass….. I just got myself a CB300R a couple of months ago. There’s not much content on that bike. Good to hear you’re still riding the CB!
I am looking to buy this bike. I like everything about it and I had and don't need stronger bike. The agility of this one in the city should be great. I need it only for city and around citiy driving and I have one question. How is it like with side winds? I'm not talking about wind protection. It is a naked bike after all and I believe any windcreen kills the joy. My main concern is about bad weather winds when it can push yoh left or right. I live on the cost of the mediterranean where in the winter there are really strong winds. I'm afraid that, because of very low weight, it could be a struggle. My experience with scooters was very bad with side winds. I also had NC750x, NC750s and Triumph street twin. They were all wind proof because of very little or none of plastic surfaces. I had Honda integra, and even it was the most havier I felt big winds because of big plastic surfaces. Right now I have Benelli Imperiale 400 and I didn't have wind problems also. I see on your videos that you drive only this bike without owning a car. I can only assume the you experienced all kind of weather conditions. So, is it good with side winds? Just to tell, I can manage this winds even with a scooter but it doesn't come without being stressed all the time and I drive 365 days a year.
I wouldn't say it's great, but it's not bad. It's not just light, it's also pretty compact. I've ridden in some crazy weather and the real issue is usually that it includes a lot of rain and visibility gets bad.
@@RemymotoYeah I thought the trouth would be somewhere in the middle. The rain and the cold I can manage with good gear. Nano spray helps at some point, and pinlock is a must. You have some fog on the road also I assume. At least I have no problem with that.
Mad expensive
how does your bike sound so different from the stock?
Where the mic is. lol. She sounds like shit now, I need to replace the chain and it's not being quiet about it. Year round riding... not chain friendly.
I mean its kinda hard to tell from that angle. It looks as if they were going straight and you were turning.
My section curves up and around into the next parking area. Their section is a parking lot exit coming into the road I am on. The angle is definitely weird, but I am in a travel lane, they are at an intersection.
@Remymoto I'm not saying you're in the right or wrong. Its just difficult to tell from that footage. I recently just bought my first scooter so i understand more now that they dont see us on 2 wheels.
Bikes seem to think big engines and massive power are the answer. I went on a road trip on my 125 with mates and one had a 1000 we 125ers all got of the bikes laughing and smiling like it was the best ride of our life's he was bored not being able to use the power. We warned him it's not all about the power bikes are meant to be fun. He never used full throttle all week we 125ers used it a lot and had miles of smiles.
I can ride any bike I want but I chose a 125. I gave my brother a few lessons on it and he was surprised at the acceleration of it. I just said every bike is fast if you know how to ride it properly. He laughed till he got left in the dust in the twisty bits. Thanks for a great video and great commentary
Rc390 is nice, Fast Acceleration, speed is alittle slow.
The official Honda motor sports website does not mention a slipper clutch for the 2024 cb 300 r.
You are right, which makes me wonder if all the reviews and such are wrong about that. I don’t have time at the moment to dig to see what Honda has said elsewhere. They may consider it not worth mentioning on the page, but that seems odd.
@@Remymoto for a brand new rider w zero experience, do you think this bike is still a viable option, even without the slippery clutch? Does it really make that much of a difference ? I think it’s still a great beginner bike.
Absolutely. The slipper clutch is just a modern addition and not nearly as big a deal as ABS or something like that. But, for example, the other day I slid my rear wheel coming to a stop because I was downshifting aggressively and passed over some painted arrows. Now, maybe the slipper wouldn’t have totally prevented that, but it would have helped. I am used to it and mostly prefer not having it, but for a beginner it can only be a help.
A balanced and fair review. I have a 2019 version and on British back roads, this bike really does come into its own. It's so light and planted you can really throw it into corners. It forgives all your silly mistakes, thank heavens because I make plenty. It's super reliable (of course it is, Honda made it) and inexpensive to run. One of the best things about it is that you can have tons of fun without breaking the speed limit. The tyres work well on rough pothole-ridden roads: whilst they're not super duper, they're good enough. Incedently, the back wheel will pop up under heavy breaking and front goes skyward under rapid acceleration (but shush, don't tell anyone I said that). You're right about the short gears. However, that comes with one advantage - you can get out of junctions quickly. And, besides these small engines thrive under high RPMs. I reckon on and over 7000 is a reasonable sweet spot. Or at least that's my experience. The OEM exhaust is a ghastly rocket launcher affair. There are aftermarket options. The top tier ones like Akaprovic will set you back about 600 English pounds. Not pocket change. But much prettier, more grunt and considerably lighter. There are cheaper options out there. GR moto spring to mind. They look good, have a decent sound, and retail at about 200 Sterling. The Engine braking is...surprisingly strong and does require clutch feathering. An instructor taught me to drag my back brake whilst feathering the clutch at slow speed. That technique seems to work well. If you get the balance wrong, you will be thrown forward. But this is a characteristic of all single piston small CC bikes, I believe. Honda have done a fabulous job with this bike. My only regret is that I didn't buy one sooner.
I completely agree. I have the 2024 versión and It is all fun.Driving 1500 km to Belgium , complete with luggage passing Spanish Pyrinees no problems

First of all ABS brakes don’t lock that’s why you can’t get them to lock it’s called antilock brake system for a reason. Secondly slap bar end mirrors on it and your vision problem is solved. Wear gear Ride safe!🇺🇸
as long as the bike will do 65mph to 75mph easy will be fine with me
people who buy fast bikes commute in cars
Hey I am planning to buy cb300 Can you tell me traction control on this bike is required or not
Not available and not needed. If you don’t get crazy you won’t have traction issues.
Hi, these clutch levers you've installed, do they help with using just 2 fingers without biting on your pinky? I'm having trouble with my factory clutch lever since they bite on my ring and pinky fingers if I try to use just 2 to squeeze the clutch. But I'm used to just 2 fingers from my previous bike and I felt more control than all 4 fingers. So are these useful for that purpose, otherwise I won't bother to replace them. I'm thinking of cutting off an inch or 2 from the original clutch, as if it fell and broke😎
I think it helps. I have mine adjusted so I can shift with two and not pull it all the way in. At a full stop in gear I hold with all four but really don’t have to.
Thanks for the video. BTW, How well does your windscreen work? Any buffeting? Im planning on installing one like yours in my bike…
I get some at my head but if I tuck down at all it goes away, if I sit more upright it goes away… just my luck that my normal position is a bit off for the height. Not enough I care. I guess it’s telling that I haven’t taken it off yet this year. I left it on once it warmed up to help with the bugs and just never took it off.
Just ordered a white one! Stoked to get my first Shoei. Is it more of a flat white or gloss? All the pics online look like a flat white
I would call it gloss, but it’s not a super polished and high gloss finish. You don’t glow. Lol
Yeah I love mine. I wanted the silver one like you have, but they were out..so I got the green, matches my bike. There is no cooler jacket in very hot weather.
Yup. Great blend of quality, cool, style and price. Add a back pad and it’s about as good as it gets for normal riding in hot weather.
Are you in top for the faster bits of the video 7k at 55mph doesn't sound right...
No, that would be 5th, maybe even 4th. I can’t recall the exact split on those. My brain is blanking right now but 54 is 6k in 6th if I am remembering right.
@@Remymoto thanks for coming back to me, much appreciated. 👍
I bought this bike last week and it's been 8 days now, red one. I'm from India. The brand new chain had several kinks in it and the factory setting had too much lash in it. Asked the dealership to tighten it a bit which the did rather reluctantly, saying it's all good and they only do that during the first service. But it then felt over tightened and the wheel would hardly move when turned by hand. First thing I ordered online was a paddock stand and sat with my bike today as soon it got delivered. My user manual said 1 to 2.2 inch slack but the chain hits the slider on the swingarm before that. For now I've given it a generous slack but couldn't check it due to rains. Oiled it with 90 gear oil generously and rotated the wheels, it just goes less than a quarter turn after I give it a hard spin. So obviously things are not ok. Adjusting the balance on both sides took me 45 mins and my knees were screaming in agony. Not as simple as I had hoped. The kinks still remain but not as stiff. Assuming that brand new O-ring chains may kink due to the friction with the rubber rings, my first experience with o ring chains. Should check how things look tomo but more rain is predicted. No mention of any engine run-in period anywhere in my manual.
The chain is definitely not a feature on this bike. After the first adjustment or two you will get faster at it. But it’s still a cheap chain and sprocket.
@@Remymoto I've done my 1st service yday after 1000 km and many kinks are still present. Dealership tightened it nicely but now the chain wear marking has already approached the red zone. They are assuring me that it will last 10k plus km despite that wear zone. Keeling my fingers crossed for now. I double coated the bike with TW ceramic spray after A24 hour curing time and it looks awesome in its pearl red and black. Looking forward to more rides now. But the chain is a constant irritant.
@@srinathtg4623same thing with mine. :(
I just replaced mine after 17k miles and I was past the red. Officially they last longer but the factory one is just not up to the task. As a heads up, there is no master link so you will have to cut it or grind off the ends of a pin to push it through. I should have done mine a couple thousand miles ago but I was being stubborn. The new one sounds, looks and feels much better than the stock one ever did. DID VX3, 108 links. I am right before the start of the green mark so once it settles in I should be set for a while.

Man, how long was that traffic light? Took up one third of the video.
