Rail chapter was pretty enjoyable and made the whole complex feel massive when I was a jit playing it
I loved this game and playing the online Death matches on the PC, . . Way before CoD. .
0:07 Cheeky ;) The booby-trapped warehouse bothers the hell out of me too. I guess they actually had the intention of blowing it up, which is why there's so many mines everywhere. Maybe this was a precursor to the Spec Ops in Opposing Force nuking the damn place. That, or they just wanted to cover their tracks before they pulled out, making sure that absolutely nobody on the inside was able to come after them. I don't really mind On a Rail either, the only thing that bothers me is that you have to keep switching trains. I think it'd flow much better if you could just stick with the one you had, and instead had to find new ways to clear the path.
Great camera angles and dynamic motion throughout.
Thanks for the kind words, it was my first time doing anything like this so I’m pleased you enjoyed it!
@@azordash_games Best Machinima I've seen in decades. :)
Was waiting for some Half-Life content and your take on it. The environmental design still holds up. Good design ages a slow.
Worf sounds more like Frank Horrigan with that distortion on.
I'm a big fan of Questionable Ethics too, and feel similarly as you re. On A Rail - I don't think it's as bad as it's reputation suggests. I always enjoyed the exploration-heavy gameplay, I think it has some good environmental design and it's neat to have the rocket as a recurring landmark as you climb higher and higher. My favorites are probably We've got Hostiles, Power Up, Questionable Ethics, and the beginning of the game. Forget about Freeman and Apprehension are my least favorite chapters, aside from most of Xen. Btw, you can destroy the helicopter before getting the RPG by using the Tau Cannon if you save up some ammo.
Yeah I definitely agree with you… I just never really got the hate for On a Rail but each to their own! Also there’s a reason I didn’t include the Xen levels here…😆 because I didn’t want to play through them all again.
"Navigating through a small cargo area" You mean the taxpayer funded bottomless box smashing dungeon of course.
100% OSHA approved!
There are moments since i have a commander keen emulator for mobile that i wonder, "How in hell did i play this game as a kid"
There is a better version of this story in the DS9 Millennium book trilogy, which I think this game was partly based off of. In that version, the crew ends up in a future where the Federation barely exists and the universe is about to end with the convergence of the wormhole with this new red wormhole. Definitely worth a read.
I wish Star Trek Online had a space combat system that was like this. Also, why is it always the Romulan Star Empire instead of the Romulan Republic (the actual good guy Romulans) that are in most Star Trek games?
Oh man, did you turned brighness as low as possible? I remember there was such terrible darnkess when you switch to OpenGL instead of using DirectX. It's impossible to play with such brightness level.
Honestly I was just running it under normal brightness… I just assumed it was a dark game but you could be onto something with the OpenGL!
@azordash_games increase brightness to comfort level and play it again. You'll get a lot of enjoyment.
Can confirm this is playable on Xbox Series S using Dosbox-pure via Retroarch, runs, and looks great. Using an xbox control under the right settings works perfect.
I’m curious. Have you tried The Universe is Toast? I never figured out how to download it, but I think the team behind it put a lot of love into it
Hi! What do you think about Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy 2003?
Great game! Would love to cover some of the Jedi Knight games in the future!
One of my all-time favorites. Definitely see the flaws in it, but many happy hours we're headed playing it.
Played it as a kid. Although I wasn't the biggest Trek fan, I'd seen enough in my life to enjoy the game. The story kept me wanting to finish. A solid 8/10 for me.
Looks like you did not know how to maneuver the ship in combat it is like a proto bridge commander
Oh I just bought this game recently because it visually reminded me of Zax: The Alien Hunter in case anyone knows that game. What a coincidence.
I’ve been playing this off and on the last couple years on GOG - but I get to the third level and really suck from there. I wish I was good at this type of game, but accept I’m just not. Elite Force for me!
Trust me… it’s not you; it’s the game… I had an embarrassing amount of saves by the end of the adventure!
Would you believe, I just started a replay of this game last week?
No lore breaking in my opinion. It feels like Section 31 the game.
Definitely picking this up on GOG next chance I get. This seems really fun. Thanks for the review
4:35 I mean….id just assume they report to section 31.
I think you’ve captured it correctly this was Star Trek’s (very belated) answer to Commandos. During what I call the “conveyer belt” era of Trek games, when Activation seemed to pump out a new release every few months. I think producing so many titles in that small window, left most undercooked as a result, and I think you can see this with Away Team. I would reference the volatile AI/combat, and the lack of visuals shown for most briefings after the Starfleet Academy mission. If not for reaching the Monitor’s bridge at the end, you’d have never had known it was a Galaxy-class ship. Unlike mission 2, when you’re shown very clearly you’re boarding an Akira class ship. Since Section 31 is kept such a tight secret, this group with the Incursion sounds like the brainchild of people who have no clue about S31, so from a lore standpoint I’m fully okay with this team existing, as it makes sense thinking about it from that lens. Overall as a game, I agree the ideas and concepts were far better than what the execution produced. With more time in the oven, this could have been a very good game, as it stands now however, I’d grade it 6/10 overall. I’d recommend it to other Trek fans simply for the unique gene and setting no other Trek game has dabbled in to date, albeit with the caveat some points of the game will have you tearing your hair out, and save scumming a lot.
Loved away team when I was a kid. Not sure it breaks canon as starfleet and federation have intelligence agencies. The incursion can't cloak and starfleet used sniper weapons.
I have to admit, I loved the continuity of the activision game era... having the Incursion show up in the last mission Armada II was really cool, like how the Chodak showed up in a bunch of TNG games, really helped to expand the world. Love your content AzorDash.
Seeing the Romulan Griffon ship from Armada 1 show up in Away Team was nice too. To this day it's probably my favorite Romulan design.
@@UndyingNephalim Personally, I've always like the Shrike Class.
While the Incusion itself didn't show up I think, the holographic disguise technology was a major plot point in Starfleet Command 3 too, referenced by name.
@@PurveyorOfEmetophili It did, it's a controllable ship in the last mission of Star Trek Armada II.
@Ternalin No I mean it didn't show up in Starfleet Command 3, just referred to. I know it appears in Armada 2.
game wasn't bad but was so anal about the structure of being hidden, being crouched, do thid and do that otherwise you cannot even shoot a damn enemy
As a kid I spent many a happy weekend on this game and remember the story being quite engaging. I could see it being frustrating to play now though. Good review!
great review! i wish the guys behind Shadow Tactics and Desperados 3 would have done a Star Trek game!
I played this game a lot as a kid and loved it and it's certainly something I plan to play again very soon. I do remember some control issues as well, but I don't believe it was a deal breaker. Honestly given the time it was released it's very good overall and the issues you talk about such as line of fire is very common at the time where other games would usually take shortcuts too. About the lore, honestly this just Section 31 without calling it Section 31. This seems like a missed opportunity since this game released a few years after Section 31's first showing in DS9 and is clearly set after DS9, or at least, towards the end of DS9
It’s actually a really good call out on the Section 31 beat… I recon the game may have aged even better from a story perspective if it WAS Section 31!
I had no idea this worked over a LAN. Anyone want to try using a virtual LAN like Radmin?
yup let me know
I loved the game on release, but I would say any score would be biased +2 points if you're a Trek fan. The visual style with the locations make it a great selling point, but if you're new a lot of the appeal would be lost.
I always liked the idea of the hologram “cloak” being a loophole from the asinine treaty.
Used to obsess over Doom 2. After properly playing first Doom I started to despise Doom 2 for being less of what first Doom was despite having new content and much worse gimmicky maps.
This fixation you have for jumping man 😂 Doom 2 is fine without jumping. Wanting so badly to do that is something I don't understand. Not jumping is so good because it allows devs to put things out of reach but still in vision and that's awesome.
To each to their own :D
Playing on switch. Don't have any of these problems so far.
Yes, it was really that bad. Here is why: "Daikatana" is considered a bad game primarily due to its outdated graphics, frustrating gameplay mechanics, poor AI companions that often get stuck or kill themselves, repetitive sound effects, and a development cycle riddled with delays and management issues, all contributing to a very disappointing experience compared to the high expectations set by its creator, John Romero, known for his work on classic titles like Doom. Key reasons why Daikatana is not considered a good game: Outdated graphics and gameplay: Released in 2000, the game's visuals and mechanics were already considered outdated by contemporary standards, making it feel like a relic from a previous generation. Unreliable AI companions: One of the game's advertised features was AI allies, but they were often useless, getting stuck in walls, dying to enemy attacks, or simply disappearing, making gameplay frustrating. Unbalanced weapon design: While the titular "Daikatana" sword was supposed to be the main weapon, its overpowered nature often made other weapons feel unnecessary and unbalanced. Poor level design: Levels were criticized for being repetitive and lacking in interesting challenges. Development issues: The game suffered from significant delays and a turbulent development process, leading to a rushed final product. High expectations and hype: As a game created by John Romero, a legendary figure in the FPS genre, "Daikatana" had a lot of hype surrounding it, which ultimately led to greater disappointment when the final product did not live up to expectations.
I recently got this game running again from an old copy I had using a linux distro and Wine. Surprisingly stable, and a great game.
Stable is a word I never thought I would hear used in the same sentence as this game, but glad you got it working well!
I have always wondered what it would take to make a Startrek game I would really love and here's my thoughts.. I think it would have ship combat like Bridge Commander. Semi open space map with optional quests or missions. Customization of the ship and bridge officers with RPG elements. 3rd or first person away mission control like Mass effect. Based around the mid to late TNG era of the SHOW. Not the movies.

This has the best looking torpedos of any Star Trek game
Temperature works very different in CorsixTH. Too hot can stress out the hospital staff. If you place radiators correctly you won't need to adjust the min/max ever. Sometimes the heating breaks though. Check your staff at the start of every month and dish out bonuses where required.

I grew up playing commander keen, and keen 6 is my favorite computer game of all time. And I say computer game because this was the era where there was a distinction between what you played on a computer vs what you played on a console. While all my friends had Mario or sonic I was thrilled to have keen
I worked with the devs to promote this game, in a small way. In 2000, I had just started work at an event marketing company in San Diego, and Presto Studios was a San Diego game dev. We worked w/them on I think at least a couple events, I remember one - it was probably Comic-Con. What can I tell you about it? Well, not much, I didn't have a ton of contact with them, though I remember what we did for them was like the most bare bones tradeshow display available, it was a real cheap affair. Still, it was way cool for me - I'd seen the Hidden Evil ads/articles in PC Gamer, I love Trek and have always been obsessed with Trek games (and all licensed games), so I'm a sucker for your channel. I remember a year or so later calling on them to see how things were, if there was anything we could do, but they were pretty stand off-ish. Next thing I knew, I was reading in the magazines "Presto Studios out of business". From what I gathered, they were a really small operation, their marketing budget was low entry-level, which seems to support the other evidence that they were a small, tight-budgeted studio. So I makes sense that if they were given a big licensed opportunity like this but under such crazy demands of low budget and quick turnaround (I can only assume if it was a super fat payday they'd have hired more people); but instead, as you say in your video, sounds like they were so rushed they just skimmed over the second half of the game. They hit their date, it got some sales if only due to the Spiner/Stewart involvement, but any initial sales limped on or trailed off after the opening. I remember it getting pretty savaged in the game reviews. I was still dying to play it, just because I loved when the games gave you a little more story an acting from the OG characters. I even played Star Trek: Borg! I did actually finally buy this on discount from the computer store; I didn't get too far, it was hard, not fun, and since I bought it out of the bargain bin, I considered it a minor loss. I may still have the CD-ROM, but I sure wish I had that box packaging.
I'm still in awe that starship creator got a sequel
It’s not about modern operating systems. This is is buggy even in its natural habitat. I have retro PCs for specific time periods and this thing crashes and stutters on a regular basis on my early 2000s one. A nightmare.
