This definitely needs a remaster. The problem was the timing. My favourite Star Trek game of all time A Final Unity was delayed until 1995 so Spectrum Holobyte only began work on Generations after by which you have a game released three years after the movie. As a result the planned First Contact game to be scrapped. A lot of ambition here but the tech and knowhow wasn't there.

I remember playing this in 97. I had a great time with it, but then again, I was 7, and probably wouldn't have known a good game from a bad one. I'd love to play this again on modern hardware.

Looking back I wonder if my enjoyment of ST:G is why I ended up really enjoying System Shock without reservation years later. There were some levels which I dreaded like the living planet but others that I really enjoyed; Galorndon Core, Amargosa Observatory and the Klingon base. Galorndon Core especially sticks out as a fond memory.

SO many hours spent with this game as a kid. I definitely needed the strategy guide, though (remember those)? Though I still could never survive the massive space battle that let you get the "good" ending. And I still wish the Chodak would make a return....

The reason looking up and down appears so weird is because the engine is using the same sort of basic raycasting that Doom did, meaning there's no way to angle the view up or down. To fake the appearance of looking up and down, what they're really doing is panning the view in those directions, meaning you see more on the vertical axis but there's no perspective alteration and all vertical lines remain parallel.

I remember playing this as a kid, I loved it even if it was too hard for me I never really finished it. But I did enjoy just messing around, do space battles etc. Nightdive please remaster this game and add QOL improvements!

I bought the original game back in 97. I was a Mac user and my mum had Windows, so had to use her PC to play it! Literally bought a copy from eBay an hours ago for £5. I use the WINE emulater on my Macs to play old school Windows games (like Blade Runner); they all play fine. Nice review, all the best mate

I'm glad you played this so I don't have to. I'm surprised I missed this, as I know a lot of early ST games, but this looks only distantly interesting. Like, I'd watch a video on it.

I really enjoyed this game in 97. The asethetics is very trek. Alas I never beat the final level. Would love to play a remake.

    Did you find Spot?
1:26 Well, Rick Sternbach decided against publishing a Technical Manual of the USS Voyager. He felt that the quality had been degrading with the DS9 Technical Manual and there would be diminishing returns. Though, if you like blueprints then I suggest that you check out the Whitefire blueprints of the USS Enterprise-D. Ed Whitefire was close to Andrew Probert and had visited the sets for research if memory serves.
7:53 I get the impression that the stun setting doesn't stun targets long enough. Which is a shame or it would have been a neat way to conserve energy.
10:52 The mission briefing, as shown at 8:53 of this video, mentions that weapons fire should be avoided. The game has got its flaws but this one is on you. Besides, I don't know if you recall that scene from "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" where a cooking pot gets disintegrated and the alarms start blaring?
11:58 It's probably my favourite level as it is a nod to an obscure reference from a TNG episode about a planet where exiled Klingons get sent and then this game suddenly has got a secret spaceport belonging to the Duras at this place.
16:04 I would argue that this is a game for people who want to experience just how difficult the job of a Starfleet officer really is. Finding a criminal in the galaxy? Finding your way around a planet while your target is making preparations to leave? That is the thing, the timer is not for show. If you wait then the Amargosa Observatory will blow up and the people you did not save are dead.

I can safely report Spot was found and rescued :D
I honestly remember the blueprints being ridiculously detailed. It's a shame we don't really get material like this for Sci-Fi and alike nowadays. The Whitefire stuff is impressive, something for me to think about for the games room one day!
The whole power level for the weapons is a bit unclear... in some of the levels you burn through power so fast.
You got me there! I do recall the iconic scene from Undiscovered Country :D
Yeah the Klingon base just had a really good vibe to it, the fact they had sections of the base which purely existed just for world building was pretty neat for a game like this.
Yeah that's a good take... as I said, despite the challenges, it's one of those games that I'm glad to have played. It's definitely one of the most difficult Star Trek games I have played... discounting some of the Dominion War missions & late turns in BOTF.

Looking at the gameplay footage while you were doing the into, I was thinking, "Hey, that is actually quite good looking for a quickly made tie in game released in 1994." Then a but later you mentioned it came out in 1997. And, oof. No wonder Quake II was more popular the year this game came out, given it had fancy features like {checks notes}, using more than half the screen.

Oh for sure. In 1994 this would have looked elite 😆

I also have something of a soft spot for Star Trek: Generations (the film). It has an emotional heart despite the problems. This game on the other hand looks exceptionally dated for the era.

I would love a startrek collection for modern hardware. I own the genesis titles and resurgence on ps5(platinum trophy). I would love elite forces I've only played the first one on ps2. Startrek games are my shit. Hanks for the video.

You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed the video. Resurgence was great - honestly the best Trek game in years. I hope it sold well so that we get more original content like that.
I've actually never played the Genesis games, though I definitely want to in the future.
Next up on my Star Trek list for a video is a DS9 PC game called The Fallen. I've never played it before but heard only good things!

They might also have had to keep the main 3D view small just due to processor limitations. I'm not defending the game (I don't think I ever played it, and it doesn't look very good to me....like a poor-man's System Shock) *but* that particular design choice may have been due to technical limitations. What was the minimum CPU requirement listed for the game?
Anyway, thanks -- enjoyed the review.

      @azordash_games  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Glad you enjoyed the review!
Yeah look, I did think that when I first started... but I think the system requirements are honestly more focused on playing some of the FMV scenes. It asks for a Pentium 90 with 16MB of RAM as a minimum & a 166 with 32MB recommended. However, Duke 3D which I think looks better and released a year earlier (although no 'real' FMV's) only asks for a 486 DX/66 with 8MB of RAM :/

I wish it had been a straight FPS. I like the fact they dubbed it as a sequel to A Final Unity cause the Chodak are in it.
If you get the version from Collection Chamber it has PCem built into installer and runs through a Win 95 environment and plays great on current OS
