The reason you find a lot of weapons so quickly is I believe because Quake, much like Doom 2, was built around being able to start levels without any weapons whatsoever (aka. "shotgun start"). So they made sure players are able to find new weapons relatively quickly. You can also see this a lot in Doom 2, which often showers you with weapons you DEFINITELY already have at that point, like the shotgun and chaingun, even if you're three levels away from the final boss. It's something that died out over time because players typically didn't want to play each new level from scratch, so developers stopped adding the option and didn't build levels around it anymore. Also, I agree with you. We really lost a lot of Quake's original charm, which is very unfortunate. And the issue is, with Doom: The Dark Ages, it seems like they're trying to give that same aesthetic to another series entirely. Which could mean there's never going to be another "Quake 1" again, because why have two fantasy medieval-themed FPS games next to each other?
Ahh that does make sense! I might go back and have *another* look at Doom 2 with this new version which has recently become available. But first I will need to summon the strength to get through Downtown again! You see the thing I liked about Quake's setting was that it was fantasy/medieval themed, but still quite grounded for the player (as in the player wasn't casting spells or things...). Maybe I'm just getting old and need to open my mind more haha
@@azordash_games Downtown is easy, just follow the arrow! If you like more medieval-looking FPS games, Heretic is basically Doom in the middle ages with magic elements. There's also Hexen, which takes it a step further. But Quake is something else entirely, I fully agree on that.
I personally liked Q2 and Q4 more than original. I never liked OG Quake's... Solutions, ie. Spawn or whatever the f that blue blob is. Multiplayer is ok, but still for me for pure FPS multiplayer mayhem, Doom it is in it's pureness and perfect weapon set.
Solid list. I didn't really get into the Quake 3 multiplayer scene so that was a little less impactful to me. But I will say that Quake 4 has not aged as well as I remembered in my head... the graphics look great - but everything else... errr not so much :/
I enjoyed the Quake II remaster by nightdive. Played it last year and loved it.
It is great

Funny that quake wars flopped so hard it's not even mentioned here 😂

My Quake games Ranked:
5 - Quake 4
4 - Quake Champions
3 - Quake II
2 - Quake III: Arena and Quake Live
1 - Quake

@@azordash_games Yea, i think Q3 was impactful as i couldn't run CS on my PC so have it plus Urban Terror as a mod for it was important for me
