We definitely have footage of that place (the exterior at least!) Every once in a while they open up the Opera House for events but never when we're passing. That is such an interesting remote junction in the desert!

Now we're cooking! 🤠 I've seen landsail folks on these dry lakes sometimes also. In high winds like this day you could cover a LOT of ground with a magnet attached. I didn't realize how much surface there was to cover until we got out there...

@@mojo.adventures Driving a truck across the lake bed, using a farmer's drag (or a pallet board with nail poking out underneath, one makes long straight lines of the scratched surface. This makes the whole concept of "mowing the lawn" that much easier. You SEE where you have been, and straight lines for the next row. It just like using side scan sonar or an underwater magnetometer looking for underwater treasure. If you attach a large metal detecting wire assembly onto an ATV (like the Meteorite Hunters), you just mow the lawn and listen for the pings. The metal detector is in front of the magnet bar. Then you can drive, and notice the signals of picking up of small objects, but when you have a really large ping, you stop and go back and make sure the magnet bar has picked up the large rock, or it is still buried and needs to be ousted. It really is that simple. Geoff was able to find 2-3+ feet down huge meteors by this method. If you scratch the surface you get all the small stuff out of the way. Its when you have the larger pings you know that something is buried and you have a very small area of excavation for getting a large meteorite from the lake bed.

Very interesting info! I haven't heard of Meteorite Hunters before. I will definitely keep all these methods in mind. Not that I'll ever get a chance to try any of it... I mean it's hard enough just getting all the way out there 😂

@@mojo.adventures Just need to properly prep up for a long 1-2 day adventure, bringing a drag board, super magnets bar, and optional metal detector unit. Lots of fuel. Then drive and "mow the lawn" for all of the meteorites. You will see where you have been by the scratched surface of the drag board. 2 long days of driving back and forth, up and down, and you will have more collected specimens than people walking, or using a metal detector out there. And those little ETs come with a sizable price tag at local astronomy and scientific conventions, partially if not fully paying for the whole trip !!!

Glad it was helpful! We were also surprised to hear Pulte was developing on top of it. For years it was expected (and hoped) that site would be cleaned up but many locals imagined it would be a city park with trees or an open space to help let the ground mend. Even with every modern measure and test conducted before developing, I don't think we'll really know the total environmental and biological effects for perhaps another 100 years. Parts of Cadence over by Pabco were the same way with the old Basic Magnesium leaching pits. Then there is the old Henderson dump area also. With the wind blowing the way it does... all of us in the valley or Guinea Pigs one way or another it seems!

Agree! That is the exact question I'm posing here. In the video I state "(the cleanup) is certainly a good thing, as you can otherwise see how this land would be used." Perhaps there was a better use than a housing development though? I'm no expert and don't have the answers, but if you want to know my personal opinion... I think they should have made that a large xeriscaped city park off the bike trail. The county is just discovering the problem they've created with urban heat islands, and more parks with large trees would help in that area. Plus the vegetation and insects would start to "mend" the soil naturally over time. Of course there is no big profits in building something useful like a park for residents, so the city of Henderson (much like Las Vegas) will sell out and let developers cram houses onto every inch of desert... contaminated soil or not. It's definitely not the small town it was, but change is the only constant here and you learn to live with it or go farther and farther out (Lake Las Vegas used to be "out in the boonies!") We love the Water Street area and so happy to see it revived while they preserve the history of the magnesium industry. Hoping to work with the city of Henderson in the future to promote local history and events. Thank you for watching and taking time to comment!
