Another point I realized why D'Arby got so worked up and that I haven't seen anyone bring up (or did you mean that by "put his own life on the line"? I assume so) : To place a bet you have to put it out on the table, right? So when Jotaro wants the secret to Dio's stand ability as an equal wager to his mothers' soul, D'Arby realizes that to call he HAS to physically tell the group the secret to The World's time stopping ability before revealing his cards. And here comes the kicker: Even if he called and got the Crusaders' souls, word would get to Dio that he did reveal the secret to his stand and this would without a doubt lead to Dio culling the "traitor". So the moment Jotaro asked for The World's secret, D'Arby lost either way. Effectively he even WON by forfeiting the match since at least he gets to survive. That's what I think anyway.

i kinda subscribe to the theory that bites the dust is a requiem, because the stand is the user and the user is the stand so there's no real diffrence and what a requiem does is give a stand the ability of what the user desires most at the moment, like with polnareff who wanted to keep the arrow away from diavolo and giorino who wanted a counter ability to diavolo, before kira got the arrow he panicked about being caught by the josuke crew and really regretted killing haiato and wanted to do it all over again, so bites the dust granted him that thus its a requiem

I loved this fight, and I think there are 3 huge things about it that I MUST say: 1) This is peak writing and shows how well written and intense a story and narrative can get, within a single punch thrown. This goes to show all those *cof* idiots *cof* who think that a story without blood, gore, violence and death is immediately for children, bad written and inheritenly boring. Easily one if if not THE best fight in part 3, and my absolute favorite from all JoJo's (altough I'm just starting part 7 btw). 2) The climax where Jotaro bets his own mother's soul is f- up (logical in all its senses of course, but try explaining that scene without context to someone without them thinking Jotaro is a terrible guy), but the moment he asks D'arby about DIO's stand is where he wins, and my personal canon is that with the mere action of asking DIO's secret, he has won. If D'arby refuses, he will lose and retire himself from the game, allowing Jotaro to win everything, but if he accepts, DIO will know that D'arby is a traitor who is willing to sell his secret in a poker game, and will inevitably kill him for that. Jotaro has won regardless of the outcome. 3) The fight against D'arby gamer is, to me, equally as good, but that one actually benefits from D'arby gambler's fight, because against the gambler brother is all about if Jotaro is bluffing or not, a simple yes-no question that us, as spectators, can most likely assume the answer is yes, but against the gamer brother it's a matter of "how", something us as spectators can't even possibly imagine, and you feel as desperate as D'arby gamer knowing he is cheating, but no idea how (specially considering Hermit Purple hasn't shown to be able to manipulate machines as Joseph does in that fight). An interesting fan-made "series" on TH-cam edits Jotaro and D'arby playing a lot of different videogames, and Jotaro is always cheating in a different, unpredictable way, just as an example of how impossible it is to try and guess what is he actually doing. If someone asks me what is peak JoJo's, this is definitely a valid answer

17:20 it was hard to watch but I could barley manage it while screaming obscenities about the writers at the screen to help me power through the pain. Alessi, coral and wirlpool are characters that I hate because it was pure uncomfortable pain for a long stretch of time because the idea of harming children in fiction while not having anything to say or anything real to depict is just unwatchable to me, even if they depicted something realistic and had an opinion to share it would still be torture to engage with the fiction.
