nah video essays are a really great niche right now, it might be oversaturated in the sense of people are making bad video essays, but there's a lot of great upcoming channels making some really high quality stuff that dont use these formulaic cliches, u might just be getting recommended some bad essays, also when u talk about editing point, this is something I've been thinking about, I've noticed that the standard of video editing for a good successful video essay/documentary channel has changed. Now you really need to be super prolific with amazing effects in order to stand out because everyone knows how to use a paper crumble overlay, slow zoom in, blur transition or a highlight effect. Right now is the best time to be a youtuber, the whole algorithm has changed, like look at how TH-cam recommended me your video with only 41 views, there's a huge chance for people to make it now, all you have to do is make a good and unique video that compliments the algorithm. Good video by the way, I like following small creators, will subscribe to see where you head next
I think the phrase “video essay” is being diluted by it being used to describe creators like SunnyV2, SummoningSalt, Internet Anarchist, etc. Their videos aren’t really an essay with arguments as much as they are really a summary of events (with a weird ideological bent in Sunny’s case at least). And yeah if I see another fucking video essay about a random movie I’m gonna end up institutionalised.
ideological bend? are u talking about the chris tyson video where he was completely correct in saying that he is a controversial figure now and will hurt mr beast somewhat??
@@egg-mv7ef not particularly, i haven't watched that one. a while ago i noticed that sunny either doesn't think about or actively ignores societal factors when he talks about how a channel's popularity moved (minecraft creators, for example), which is an oversight so glaring i can only assume the reason for doing it is ideological also *she
ngl i was getting panic attacks not getting any fast cuts, fx, pan/zoom, meme etc. every 3 seconds. Hats off to the attention focussed mild edited video....(i swear i felt like writing a video essay script rn)
I agree that the term "video essay" is a bit diluted now. To me, video essays are long videos with a thought-through argument/thesis and evidence to support it. The best video essays connect whatever they're talking about to larger themes in society. Other videos could be classified as "commentary." If you're looking for some good video essays, I recommend Big Joel, Shaun, and Contrapoints.
It's true, ive been watching them since 2016 and they havent died in popularity. The biggest issue has gotta be the constant promotion that youtube gives them all compared to other forms of content like more art or music.
Idk if this is just a me-thing but... If a title and thumbnail look click-baity I've found myself just right clicking and either clicking unsubscribe or on 'don't recommend again'. I'm done wasting my time on terrible content when there are all these perfectly good videos out there that don't need to rely on insane exaggerations and the content creator making a 😱 face in the thumbnail, but will instead just summarize in title and thumbnail what the video is actually about.
i feel most of the “video essays” now are just getting pushed out so quick that it lacks substance and becomes just a 3rd grade video summarizing a historic event with the narrators basic take on a situation like sunny’s videos are just a farm of views with no substance
I doubt his scripts are ai generated but I wouldn’t be surprised if a good chunk of vid essays are, sometimes I’ll just stop and go “wtf am I listening to” and click off😭
Is your criticism seriously that the titles use verbs and nouns? Sometimes it feels like these meta critique videos about youtube are just people who have nothing to do but complain

Like anyone can do this. ____ ____ TV? What a generic TH-cam channel name!
it’s formulaic pseudointellectualism

Is your comment really a complaint about a video about a complaint? Cringe! Follow for more
