We are walking the 214 Wainwright summits across England's glorious Lake District - for the second time - and filming them all. We have walks for all abilities, from long days on the hills, to gentle bimbles - big mountains to small hills and simple lakeside paths. We have films in the sun, the rain and the snow - sometimes on the same day! We hope you enjoy our films, and find them inspiring for your own adventures.

TRAILER | Show Up and Start: The Art and Life of Dorothy Ramsay
Show Up and Start: The Art and Life of Dorothy Ramsay
RS FilmFest 2024 (FINALIST), Latitude Film Awards (Documentary Feature BRONZE WINNER, October 2024) New York Film and Actor Awards 2024 (SHORTLIST), Athens International Monthly Art Film Festival (HONOURABLE MENTION), Paris International Short Festival (SEMI-FINALIST), Edinburgh Film Awards (SEMI-FINALIST), Los Angeles Movie & Music Video Awards (OFFICIAL SELECTION), London Lift-Off Film Festival (OFFICIAL SELECTION)
"Show Up and Start" is more than a documentary - it’s a celebration of resilience, creativity, and the transformative power of art. This deeply personal film chronicles the remarkable journey of Dorothy Ramsay, an artist whose life has been as textured and vibrant as her work. From her postwar childhood in northeast England to her formative years at London’s Camberwell School of Art, and her reinvention as a weaver and therapist, Ramsay’s return to full-time artistry exemplifies her inspiring belief: show up and start, and the work will follow.
Set against the awe-inspiring beauty of the English Lake District, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the film invites audiences to experience the interplay of nature, life, and art through Ramsay’s eyes. Interviews with younger artists, touched by her wisdom and legacy, add layers of intergenerational perspective, making the documentary both timeless and urgent.
Elevating the narrative is an exquisite soundscape by Shelley Roden, an award-winning foley artist from Skywalker Sound, and Jeffrey Roden, an acclaimed composer whose music resonates with emotional depth.
"Show Up and Start" is a visually stunning, emotionally moving exploration of creativity, perseverance, and the landscapes - both external and internal - that shape us. It is perfect for audiences seeking inspiration, art lovers, and anyone who believes in the power of dedication.
We believe this film will resonate deeply with you and leave a lasting impression. Join us in sharing Dorothy Ramsay’s extraordinary story and her universal message: the first step in any creative journey is to simply begin.
“Dorothy Ramsay's wit, charm and talent certainly shined through in a well deserved documentary about her life!” - Dances With Films: NYC

Lake District Walks | Walking the Wainwrights | Low Fell and Fellbarrow - Buttermere valley view!
มุมมอง 2K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
On an unexpectly lovely Sunday evening, Neil heads out from Thackthwaite in the north west of the Engigh Lake District, to visit two low Wainwright hills - Low Fell and Fellbarrow. Along the way, there is a song thrush, endless sheep, a spectacular view south over the whole Buttermere valley and west and north to the Irish Sea and Solway Firth, across the Cumberland plain. To the east is are th...
Lake District Walks | Walking the Wainwrights | High Rigg and Castlerigg Stone Circle
มุมมอง 2.5K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
End of March 2024, on a bright spring morning, Neil tackles the sixth-smallest Wainwright, High Rigg, beside St John's in the Vale, via Tewet Tarn and Low Rigg, returning via the epic Castlerigg Stone Circle. It's a 6.5 mile circular route, of around 1,250 ft ascent and descent, with spectacular views of Blencathra, Skiddaw, Helvellyn and Bleaberry Fell. On the way, he makes friends with ponies...

มุมมอง 2.4K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
Mid-February 2024, Neil heads out from beside the River Duddon, through Hardknott Forest (and a red squirrel encounter) and up Harter Fell. It's a steep ascent (Wainwright recommended the route from neighbouring Eskdale), but the views are stunning, particularly in the snow. Lake District Walks | A Circuit of Haweswater - flooded Mardale, Withnail and I film location
มุมมอง 2.5Kปีที่แล้ว
On a gloriously sunny day in mid-November 2023, Neil visits the epic Haweswater Reservoir, to the west of the Lake District. There, he explores the beautiful autumnal scenery and dark past of a vanished community - uprooted by the flooding of their homes in 1935, and finds the location of an iconic scene from Withnail and I (Dir. Bruce Robinson, 1987). The tree he refers to is not, as he guesse...
Lake District Walks | Walking the Wainwrights | Wetherlam via Coppermines Valley and Black Sails

Mid-October 2023, and Neil heads out of Coniston in the English Lake District on a clear, bright, but cold morning, up to Coppermines Valley, via the neglected gem of a ridge walk to Black Sails to Wetherlam. This Black Sails is not to be confused with Black Sail Youth Hostel or the Black Sail Pass, both of which are over towards Buttermere/Ennerdale. Presumably both share the same derivation, ...

Hello really enjoyed the video and would love to go. Where can I park? if you have a postcode please thank you.
There are a couple of car parks - this is one: maps.app.goo.gl/PL95GEKyjadoyjvb6?g_st=com.google.maps.preview.copy
My 4 year old liked watching this with me, and he says he likes your hat. We did Castle Crag with him when he was 3, and he loves to tell people about it.
Hello! That's so good to hear - tell him he has good taste (in hills and hats)! All the best, Neil
Great video thank you I will be doing this walk on 15th December when I’m in the lakes and your video has helped massively so you got urself a sub.Can I ask I will be going to high street also and was looking at the path to bale out if I don’t have time etc is the path off between Mardale lll bel and hartel fell towards the reservoir? Il be using the all trails app so should be ok but just checking.
Thank you so much! Hope you have a good day for it - depending on your speed, it might be a longish walk for limited sunlight, but it's a cracker of a walk. The path south between Mardale lll Bell and Harter Fell is a good escape route, if needed. It doesn't go down meet to the Kentmere Reservoir, but tacks parallel to it up the hillside. There is a right turn off to Whether Fold and the weirs below the reservoir from Smallthwaite Knott, although I think I'd recommend sticking on the main path down to Hallow Bank and then Low Lane back to the start. Hope that helps! Let us know how you get on. All the best, Neil
Where can I watch the full film please
Hello! We’re not releasing it publicly for now, because it has been submitted to several festivals who prefer films not to be available. If you email info [at] onyvafilms [dot] com though we can send you a link to the unlisted film. Hope that helps!

always a pleasure to see and listen to you Neil!
we love this walk.
It's a hidden gem! Maybe one for November?
Shame about the weather, because that one is a cracking walk
i tried doing the Hardknott this summer on a pan european. the pass was closed due to an accident. now that ive seen clips im sort of glad. but i will definetly come back to the lake district
There have been a few closures due to accidents this year, but the Lakes are always worth a visit! Thanks for commenting.
Very timely, this video popping up in my notifications, as I will be in Elterwater myself next week for a few days hiking. One of my walks includes this path (or path, if you prefer)! Can we have some new content please Neil. You are starving us of your exquisitely dry sense of humour! 😁👍
Thank you! Hoping to get back on the hills filming soon - I've been working on a couple of bigger documentaries this year, which has taken up a lot of time, but always looking forward to getting back on the fells! Hope you have a great trip to Elterwater!
@@LakeDistrictFilms That sounds interesting.... I hope we will be able to see the fruits of your labour through here.
Just did haystacks today after a fall on high stiles 2 months ago resulting in a torn mcl and climbing up with a leg support on was ok but coming down my leg gave up took me 4hrs getting down. Stupid to attempt it but just missed the views but i think after today my climbing days are over. Loved the video thanks.
Wow, sorry to hear about the fall and recurring pain - I still get pain from a badly turned ankle last November, so I can't imagine what you're going through. Hopefully things will improve! Best wishes, Neil
@LakeDistrictFilms thanks. After watching your videos I gonna have to get back up there it's just to good to walk away from. My leg will heal one day I hope.
I do enjoy your videos. You have developed a great conversational style combining history with route finding. You definitely deserve more views for your channel. I do hope you intend to make more.
Thank you so much - I'm definitely planning on doing more! Hope to get something new up before too long. In the meantime, thanks again for your comment; it's much appreciated. Best wishes
Aliens
Yep, Hardknott makes the Honister pass and Belach na Ba in Scotland seem like a walk in the park! Awesome cheers👍👍
Thank you!
Hello guys. Amazing video. I can’t seem to open up the OS route via the link you posted in the description. Could you please copy in the link again or what I need to search on AllTrails or OS to find the particular route you took. Thank you and great video
Wow Neil, one of the best videos I have ever watched on the Wainwrights. Many years ago I ascended / descended the ridge from / to Ennerdale and have been contemplating your route, so stumbling across this is a great motivator!
Many thanks Michael. That's so good to hear! Hope you have a good day, when you get to the route - let us know how you get on. All the best
Some of that Base Brown stuff looks a bit sketchy for doddery old buggers like me and the Mrs. Is it as questionable as it looks? I absolutely hate turning back defeated by my faint heartedness.
The hardest bit about Base Brown is probably route-finding - it's steep, but not terribly scrambly (other than the first little section by the beck) - you just have to pick your way through a few false leads around the Hanging Stone, before you get to the final ascent. Hopefully the film gives a clear idea of how to get round it! Good luck!
Neil, quite a while since you put a video out, we hope that you are OK. Or is it just the rotten weather we have had this so-called summer. Best wishes Kevin & Barbara
Hi Kevin and Barbara. It has been a while, but I'll be back soon! All well - just been working on a longer documentary, which will be out soon, and a project with Hardknott Forest, which is interesting but time-consuming! All the best, Neil
@LakeDistrictFilms thanks Neul, looking forward to it
I'm loving these videos. Can't wait to get back up to the Lakes next year.
Thank you - glad you're enjoying them - all the best!
Done the mosedale horseshoe several times in the past with two border collies sadly long gone. My favourite part is the view from Red Pike beyond wastwater including Whin Rigg & Illgill. I’ve been known to sit several minute’s absorbing that view. Thank you
Where have you been? Missed your positive videos and chats. Bosh
Hello! Sorry - it's been a busy year, but we're working on it!
I'm loving this content. As a Wainwright walking enthusiast, living on the South Coast with not much opportunity to head North currently, I'm finding these videos are helping me not to let stress win. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you! That's really good to hear - hoping to be back with some new films soon!
thanks Neil
Beautiful ❤
Thank you!
Where is dudon valley
Roughly between Wrynose and Hardknott passes.
Well I did it, High Rigg was stunning in full bloom with the heather, it was a carpet of Purple. For not a lot of effort I was at the top and spent al ot of time wandering across towards St John inthe Vale and back. Wonderful
Congratulations! It’s a lovely little hill, that! The Lake District in miniature!
Made my day. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi been watching lots of your videos they are great do you use the all trials app at all? I’m no good at reading maps as didn’t know if any of these walks are on there? Thanks
Hello and thank you! No, I don’t use All Trails, but will look into it. I tend to use the Ordnance Survey app (and maps) - a lot of our walks should be on there. If there’s anything you’re particularly interested in, let me know and I’ll check!
@@LakeDistrictFilms thank you I need to get a plan together I want to complete 40 wainwrights before I’m 40 which gives me a year but I live 5 hours away so have to plan some routes that cover a few in one walk
@@amybowles4078 You're welcome - good luck with the Wainwrights. In case you haven't already seen it, I recommend this book as a good way of optimising your walks: www.wob.com/en-gb/books/stuart-marshall/walking-the-wainwrights/9781850587538?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwt4a2BhD6ARIsALgH7DrwzVageRVIx-nNkAhPNwQAvhuowkmmocEb1sMncNIgWrcXsc8Csu0aAiOhEALw_wcB#GOR002265088 My feeling is that some of the timings are optimistic (particularly for someone of average fitness), but the longer walks often come with two day alternatives.
@@LakeDistrictFilms thanks so much just ordered it I have the other wainwrights books I have just started reading, keep up the great work with your videos I’m still making my way through them but they are very good must take you ages, enjoy the rest of your weekend
Ooooh! Not too sure about that descent from Fleetwith Pike! If i did it in reverse would the descent from Haystacks be better or worse?
A lot of people seem to be against the Fleetwith descent, and it is a little exposed in places, but I found it OK. The ascent is comparatively popular, and the descent off Haystacks, although steep in places is probably easier because each steep section is relatively short, and the walk down from Scarth Gap Pass to Buttermere is straightforward. Hope that helps!
How long does the circular walk take roughly? Which is the best way to walk round to get the best evening light views?
Hello! Depending on your speed, it’s about a 1-2 hour walk. If you’re doing an evening walk, personally I’d walk it anti-clockwise, because the setting Sun reflects on the lake, beautifully. Hope you have a great walk!
What were you driving? Would it be proper scary in a motorhome Width:2.13 m Length:5.90m? Any suggestions of a goodcampsite near Buttermere? Thanks in advance
I’ve never driven a motor home, so not sure if it would make it. If it’s any help, the busses drive over the pass, so if it’s just a matter of size, I think you should be OK! There are a couple of campsites in Buttermere itself (I think), and other good ones in Borrowdale - I’d recommend the one in Grange, which is basic, but lovely.
Brilliant video. I’ve been walking the Wasdale fells with my family (partner and x 2 kids). We’ve done, Lingmell, Scafell and scafell pike, great gable and Kirk fell. Pillar is next for us. It looks a bit hairy at the top! How dangerous /narrow is the high ridge to the summit? Also how’s the descent from red pike. The music makes it all feel like a walk in the park! But I’m sure it isn’t at all! Your dogs do great! Thanks for such a useful video! 🙏
Thank you! It’s been a few years, but my recollection is that the path op to Pillar is reasonably straightforward and not exposed. The ridge up towards Little Scoat Fell from Wind Gap is a bit more scramble, but also not too exposed. The descent down Dorehead Screes is definitely steep and not enormously fun… the alternative way off is following the path to the west of Yewbarrow, which is fairly gentle, but significantly adds to the length of the walk, with a longish plod back up the road/Mosesale Beck back to Wasdale Head. It’s a great walk, all in all, but inevitably a long day! Hope that helps.
Done it today, steep climb
What an amazing film. Cheers! (or rather chin chin)
Thank you! To a delightful weekend in the country!
I went to Uncle Monty’s house around 25 years ago and got in to have a look around. It had not been used since the filming and the weather was very similar too 😂
Hello friend, I hope you are well. We are going to climb Skiddaw in August, but we would want an easier route that avoids the hard portion. Any recommendations?😅
The "classic" way up Skiddaw is probably from the car park/gate by Latrigg - it's not terribly steep, but it is long, and some find it a little boring. Great views back over Keswick and Derwentwater, though, so definitely not to be sniffed at! Alternatively, you could reverse the end of this walk, and go up via Bakestall, get to the top and go back, but that's also quite a long walk... Hope that's of some help - on a good day, any way up Skiddaw is worth the effort!
I have just found your channel (liked & sub'd) and love this video. I definately want to walk your route with my partner and look forward to watching more of your videos. Any advice on where to park? I have tried zooming in on OS maps, but cannot see anything clearly marked. Thanks!
Thanks so much! I parked in a small parking bay on the road heading towards Orthwaite. Hopefully you can click on this link, and it will take you straight to it: goo.gl/maps/3nQvoPVa2S4AGRJZ9 All the best, Neil
Catbells was my first Wainwright a couple of months ago. Epic views, but i absolutely hated that walk back down, my knees were not happy with me when i finshed. Although i was lucky enough to have the summit all to myself for approx 20 minutes
Fantastic! Always nice ot have the top to yourself! Hope you enjoy other Wainwrights in future. All the best
In 1965 my wife and I whilst on our honeymoon first discovered Friar's Cragg and did this walk many times in later years. We always enjoyed looking for the low water marks and sitting on the end bench devouring the splendid view of the lake. We have 59 years of happy memories of walking in Lakeland but sadly can no longer walk far but still managed to enjoy the valleys.
Thanks for letting us know - glad to hear that you're still enjoying the Lakes. Best wishes
How long did it take you to complete please?
Hi. It's about a 10 mile walk, and around 3,430 ft/1,045 m of ascent, and is a long day... Possibly 8 - 10 hours, depending on speed and how many breaks you take!
Planning to do the Cumbria Way next summer, so definitely going to deviate at Hawse End and climb up Cat Bells instead to get those great views. It's great to see this video to see what to expect.
That sounds great. There's a clip of the descent down Hawse End in our film of the Newlands Round (and bits of the Cumbria Way here and there in several other films!) Hope you have a good day/days for it - enjoy!
Lovely walk. Superb video. Well played, sir
Thank you!
Are there any bbq/picnic areas here? If so how close are they to the car park? Thankyou
😂Techno bird.
Completed this one last week. It was my first Wainwright! I parked by Legburthwaite and followed the path from the south. I wish i saw this video first because that path was pants. Lots of scrambling. Thanks for the video 🐴
Oof! That's a tough way up! Hope you had a good day, though!
Thanks for taking us along with you. Lovely walk.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it!
Always enjoy your videos - thanks for sharing - my wife and I did the walk a few days after you did it. I think the view from Low Fell looking east is one of the best in Lakeland.
Thank you - greatly appreciated. It's a lovely, if slightly underrated hill. Glad you enjoyed the film! Neil
