Enjoyed that Neil, many thanks. Very calming. I too seem to gravitate towards the edges - I need not. Lovely views of Catstycam on this route. Cheers, Simon
Watched this video again today as it brought back happy memories of when i did most of this route over fifty years ago.I did an Outward Bound course at Ulswater,.We climbed Helvelyn from most directions but this route still sticks in my mind. Thanks for taking me back there.Brilliant.
Hi Neil, brilliant as ever, loved it. And I have to agree with Sir Alfred, Catsye Cam is a wonderful looking mountain. Thank you so much for sharing your day with us as always. Cheers Dave 😀⛰🥾🏴
thank you for taking us along Neil, I really enjoyed that and we've now put it on our list to do when we are up and staying in Glenridding next year (we can do from the door, woo!) :)
Thanks, Nic! Sounds perfect - don't forget to pay a visit to the cafe in YHA Helvellyn - essential on the way down after a hot day! They're lovely people and can point you to their secret garden beside the river (through the tunnel to the left of the entrance yard)!
Hey Neil! Can confirm, we did this yesterday (minus Raise and Nethermost and sadly minus the cafe) and what a day in the fells it was! A bit brutal going up those switchbacks near Kepple cove though, our non-hill legs were struggling but we got it done and it was lovely! Can confirm that midget gate on the bridge is a wonderful bit of kit, we loved that (and the waterfalls all along the route, beautiful!) :)
A great film. We lost the views going up to White Side so thanks for showing us what's there. Keep up the fantastic content, love watching these, thanks!
Fabulous walk thank you! It’s years since I’ve climbed Helvellyn & you’ve inspired me to plan my next trip to explore this amazing place. Wonderful route too & a good idea to miss out striding edge. Look forward to your next video 😊
Great video. Good balance on commentary: all information was relevant to the fantastic walk. Relevant information supplied about the route was useful for all levels of ability. Looking forward to your next adventure. Cheers!
A real treat waking up to a new video by you. Last weekend we did the Steel Fell to Helm Crag walk you posted for our wedding anniversary. We watched it half a dozen times before we went and the guidance was spot on. How much of a physical step up would this hike be Neil? Thanks, for your great videos.
Thank you - so glad to hear they've been useful - hope you had a great day for it. This walk is a step up primarily in terms of time - it has quite a long walk in/walk out between Glenridding and around the Youth Hostel, but it's only long, rather than taxing. Overall, this walk is about 5 miles, and possibly about 3 hours, longer, and the descent of Swirral Edge is definitely a little more taxing (hands definitely needed), but taken slowly it's fine and never feels as exposed as Striding Edge. Technically, it's classed as a Grade 1 scramble - doable for hill walkers in good conditions. Hope that helps! All the best
Marvelous! Thanks for taking the time to do this, top quality 👌 As a teenager I knew a joke with the punchline "a cods as good as a mink to a blind Norse" but sadly I can't remember the gag anymore. Never mind, eh !
Hi, great video, thanks. I've probably done Helvellyn 4 or 5 times, always via the "normal route" up Striding Edge, never seen this route before and I must give it a try. 🙂
Thanks, Steve! Striding Edge always draws the attention, but there are plenty of interesting alternatives to explore! Hope you enjoy, if you give it a try!
This was an amazing watch! And I'm taking it as a good sign as i had just turned on Utube after planning this exact route for when i come up in a few weeks and your video was at the top of my feed! Now just got to see if i can do it. I'm not the fittest person but i hope to just take my time and enjoy it. Again, great video!
Thanks, Paul! One of the great things with Helvellyn is the number of options for ascent and descents, so you should probably be fine. The route up is a decent pitch, well-signposted and clear, so as long as you pace yourself, you should be fine. Hope you get a good day for it - let us know how you get on! Stay safe!
Smashing video, thank you. Done Helvellyn a few times but always the "touristy way" via hole in the wall and striding edge. This looks a far more scenic and peaceful way - got to give it a go this year sometime. 👍
Brilliant video and hike, loved the route and the unique commentary. Swirral edge looked a bit edgy!! But you made it feel manageable for even me! Regards, Ashley
Thank you so much, Ashley. Swirral Edge just needs a little concentration (and a bit of seated descent, here and there!). Have fun on the hills! All the best.
Neil, Thanks for sharing yet another cracking walk. Stunning scenery, once again beautifully filmed with great drone footage. Loved the footage of the descent down Swirral Edge and the sharing of your fluent Norse, it may come in handy one day. Great route description also. Keep the videos coming please. Regards Kevin👍
Superb video as always. Your enthusiasm and knowledge of the Lakes shows in bundles peppered with a cracking sense of humour. Best of all though, is the location itself which you always give top billing.
Wow. I have only just come across your chanell and may I say thank you for making such an entertaining video. It is almost like I am walking with you as a companion I have just come across on my own walk. So thank you for accompanying me on my walk and for all the information you have imparted on the way, I look forward to walking with you again, thank you.
This took about 8 or 9 hours, but messing about with filming always adds at least an hour to a walk. Hope you have a good day for it - let us know how you get on.
Fantastic video! I love walking but can’t go anywhere near edges as they give me the heebyjeeby’s. It’s great that you show other ways to do Helvellyn.
You have to do Striding Edge at least once, but once you've done it this route is, in my opinion, just as good if not better as it is far less busy. Great video, look forward to the next one, thanks, Andrew.
“I can’t understand why you don’t get more views. I’ve watched all of your walks and I think the way you present them is unique and makes it look easy. I’ve done over 100 Wainwrights in both winter and summer, so I know they’re not easy. That was a good one and it’s now on my to-do list. 👍” take it easy.
Brilliant video and a lovely day you had for the walk. Keep working on the Old Norse you never know when the Brexiteers are going to start insisting we go back to the old languages.
Thank you - glad you enjoy them. The much-loved Panavision hat gave up the ghost after a few too many washes destroyed the peak - unfortunately they don't have them in the same colour any more, but maybe they'll be back, sometime. Cheers!
Another great video (goes without saying though) I've always had a soft spot for Helvellyn and have ascended by the majority of routes, but not via Keppel Cove (yet). Keep the videos coming. Incedently, how many wainwright's have you bagged?
Thanks, Steve. I'd not done this route previously (although, like you I suspect, have done it from various directions - Striding Edge, up from St John's in the Vale and as part of the ridge up from the Dodds), but this is a lovely approach. I first completed the Wainwrights in 2017, before starting filming them, but will need to do an updated tally of how many have been filmed, now! I'll let you know...
I don’t if I should ask you this question but I will ask are you local in the Lake District and what advice will you give to someone who wants to move here? Thank you
Thinking of doing this tmow as hellvelyn is currently icy and snowy, seems like the safest way up, im not a mountaineer. Would u recommend this route even in the snowy, icy conditions? Many thanks :)
Other than Swirral Edge (which would probably be icy and a little intense in the snow) the rest of the route is probably good in the snow - just avoid the cornices at the edge of Helvellyn, and keep warm!
@@LakeDistrictFilms thank u, i chose to do this walk as was reassurred by ur video and comment, was snow and ice up there but i had my crampons and it was fine, squirrel edge a bit steep but totally fine as long as u dont look backwards. Thanks!
Enjoyed that Neil, many thanks. Very calming. I too seem to gravitate towards the edges - I need not. Lovely views of Catstycam on this route. Cheers, Simon
Thanks, Simon - yes, arguably it's only this way round that you get a sense of the full scale of Catstycam... All the best
Watched this video again today as it brought back happy memories of when i did most of this route over fifty years ago.I did an Outward Bound course at Ulswater,.We climbed Helvelyn from most directions but this route still sticks in my mind. Thanks for taking me back there.Brilliant.

Great video I must say it has given me great confidence to tackle Helvellyn😊
Thank you! Hope you have a great time, when you get there! All the best

Brilliant video Neil, loads of detail, one of the best walks in the Lakes 👍
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it.
Great! I enjoy your videos :)

Thanks for the feedback, David. Much appreciated! More films on their way!
Best TH-cam channel by far, this video is superb. I’m doing this walk next 👍🏻
Than you so much, David! Have a great day on the fells - stay safe!
Loving your films. Most informative. You are giving me some great ideas for my next trip to the Lake District x
Thanks, Paula - that's great to hear. Hope you have a fantastic time!

We did this walk last year and had brilliant weather with high winds.
It has fabulous views
And well worth the long day.
Thanks for a great film
Thank you - yes, it's a lovely walk, that (but, as you say, long - especially the plod back into Glenridding!) Cheers.
Thank you for the time spent descending Swirrel Edge!
Any time!
Another great video. Will try this route next time 😊
Thank you - hope you enjoy it!
Yet another great film, its 3 years until i move back to Cumbria to get baxk out on the fells its not the same where i am now. Keep them coming 😊
Thanks, Andrew.

I first completed the Wainwrights in 2017, before starting filming them, but will need to do an updated tally of how many have been filmed, now! I'll let you know...
Update: I think we've filmed 95 Wainwrights, so far (including one that has yet to be released)! Still plenty to do!
@LakeDistrictFilms looking forward to watching you complete them, and Probably retracing the routes.
Order a meal and a drink 😂
I don’t if I should ask you this question but I will ask are you local in the Lake District and what advice will you give to someone who wants to move here? Thank you
Sadly not local, but have been visiting for around 30 years. Don't know if any other viewers can comment/assist with thoughts on moving to the Lakes?!
Can it still be ridden on horseback?
Judging by the horse poo on the route in a few places, yes!
This looks like an amazing route! Do you remember how many hours this took you by any chance?
Probably took me about 9-10 hours, but the process of filming always adds to the length of a normal walk. I'd budget for about 8 hours, perhaps.
