  • The mighty Blencathra is often one of the first hills seen by visitors arriving in the English Lake District. Sometimes known as "Saddleback," because of its famous profile, Blencathra is a favourite fell for walkers, some of whom ascend via the intimidating scramble known as "Sharp Edge."
    On an initially cloudy day in late April 2023, Neil chooses another route, up Scales Fell, which is more accessible to everyday walkers, and then visits Mungrisdale Common, Bowscale Fell and Bannerdale Crags. Along the way, he considers Wainwright's most - and least - favourite fells, and takes in some truly epic views.

    Fabulous hike and video, as always, great commentary and information - your knowledge of the area is second to none. We've been on some of those paths and brought back good memories. Sad to see the circular trig point on Blencathra damaged - but no one can damage the views!! Regards, Ashley

    hi Neil, second viewing and i wondered if you knew how many miles the full walk was. these are so inspiring. thanks

    • @LakeDistrictFilms
      @LakeDistrictFilms  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s about 7.5 to 8 miles. 3,090 ft ascent/descent. Hope that’s useful.

    Another great video.. My usual route up Blencathra starts off the same but veers to the right, around Mousethwaite Comb and then upwards. I've done Sharp Edge once, so don't feel the need to do it again 😮

      Thank you! That is a good way up - will probably use that route up to Souther Fell, sometime. Thanks again!

    Really enjoy these walking videos. Thanks.
    Been wondering what set-up you use for filming, wouldn't be a DJI Pocket 2 would it?

    • @LakeDistrictFilms
      @LakeDistrictFilms  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! No, we did look at the DJI Pocket, but there were initially criticisms of battery life, which put us off. It also seems a little fragile. This was largely shot with a GoPro Hero 11, which has amazing in-camera stabilisation. Hope that helps!

    Another fantastic video, Neil! I too cannot be made to do Sharp Edge by any means of compulsion! Weather permitting, I will be striding along these same fells in June - hoping to be game enough to do Hall's Fell ridge or, if I chicken out, I will do Doddick Fell. Hope to meet you in the fells one day! Happy walking :-D

    Dear Neil, in your Souther Fell film you mentioned that the route you took up towards Souther Fell would be a better route to Blencathra than the original gravel path featured in this film. In Mark Richards’ guidebook to Keswick, is that preferred route #17 on page 55? I am just going to say route one more time. Thanks!

    • @LakeDistrictFilms
      @LakeDistrictFilms  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello! No, it’s not route 17 - what I was thinking of is the start of Route 14, to the top of Mousethwaite Comb, but then joining up with Route 13 - avoiding the scrabbly scree (at the bottom of Mousethwaite Comb) and taking the left hand ridge up to Blencathra (basically the second half of the ascent in the film).
      In fact, Mark Richards’ Route 17 is basically the descent in the film, if that’s any guide?
      Hope that helps, but let me know! All the best

    Can i ask, how long did your hike take you? 😊

    • @LakeDistrictFilms
      @LakeDistrictFilms  ปีที่แล้ว

      This probably took about 8 hours, but we tend to take longer (due to stops for filming) than an ordinary walk, so perhaps budget for 6 - 7 hours?
