In 1965 my wife and I whilst on our honeymoon first discovered Friar's Cragg and did this walk many times in later years. We always enjoyed looking for the low water marks and sitting on the end bench devouring the splendid view of the lake. We have 59 years of happy memories of walking in Lakeland but sadly can no longer walk far but still managed to enjoy the valleys.
I have ran around there Soo many times as an adult, used to play for hours on end down by the lake making camps.. now live the other side of the world and continue to love watching your films 👍
I fell in love with the Lake District on my first of two crossing along the Coast to Coast way back in the mid 1980s. Derwent water away from the hustle and bustle of the road is very peacefull and relaxing, but I have only ever done it from Keswick to Borrowdale and visa versa, but later in the year I will attempt a full circuit with my trusty Canon Camera and tripod to stock up on some photographic Memories for the time I know will come when I can no longer hike the Fells, Valleys and Mountains in the area. There is nothing more relaxing for me than a two weeks ramble round the Lake District than a Lakeside stroll on my way to Borrowdale and Stonetwaite Campsite, for a weeks hiking or the hike back to Keswick to catch the Coach back to flat Essex. Now I am retired I am planning another visit this summer to recharge my Memory Banks with the scenic Beauty of Derwent Water and Borrowdale. Now I am retired I may even change from my normal camping routine at and opt for B&B. Thank You LDF for the video. Tony in Essex.

Great vid thank you! Just the right amount of commentary and some great views. This was my very 1st lakes walk in May 2003. We stayed in the boat house down by the boat hire in Keswick. It's sadly derelict now, but had great views over the lake to Cat Bells. Thanks for bringing back those memories.
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it. Staying beside Derwentwater was my first experience of the Lakes, too (around 30 years ago...) It's a shame that that boathouse seems to be so unloved - it's in a cracking location. The floods a few years back seemed to wreck it, but it's never been fully fixed since.
@@LakeDistrictFilms It belonged to the people who owned the house next door. (Mr and Mrs Brown). May be It still does, it makes a great place to stay, but yes, the unpredictable floods probably make it impractical 😏
Another enjoyable vlog, thank you. It is good to see a low level walk included, as they should not be ignored just because walkers are capable of climbing the highest fells. They are excellent for a leisurely rest day or bad weather on the tops, the Derwent Water circular being one of the finest. Many years ago I walked with friends around the Borrowdale end of the Lake in mid winter. Dusk was approaching and we reached the point where you mentioned it was prone to flooding and impassible. However, I new better and we didn’t want to turn back as we were so close to the road. We decided to wade across a number of flooded channels, with we me leading the way. I stepped into the last channel with the immortal words “I wonder how deep this is?” before disappearing. My mountain chums nearly died, laughing😂
Thanks, Paul. Yes, it's easy to overlook (in every sense!) the stunning low level walks around the Lakes. We'll have to get back to Buttermere and do the circuit, because it is stunning. All the best.
LOVED THE VIDEO!!!!! Thanks! Last/only time in Keswick I made it from the THEATRE to MARY MOUNT b4 taking the launch back to Keswick via the Catbells trailhead - yep, a friendly stranger helped my up the scramble... Returning with my husband in OCT and hoping to take the launch to Mary Mount, take in Lodore Falls, a pint then take the trail to the next launch stop for the ride back to Keswick. Good idea? How long a walk? THANKS/CHEERS
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it! That sounds like a lovely trip - would imagine it would take 30-45 minutes, but it depends on your speed (it's not a race, though!). Worth checking the launch timetables, too: keswick-launch.co.uk/cruises/summer-times/ Hope you have a great visit. All the best.
Hi. Can you tell me which bits of this route are not suitable for wheelchairs? I've a powered off-road wheelchair set up, but obviously still limited by bits that need climbing. I'm aware of MWS route 34, but your video seems to show it to be mostly do-able. Thanks.
Hi David. With the caveat that I'm not a wheelchair user, so can't be certain, it appears that the path from the Theatre by the Lake to Calfclose Bay is pretty good for wheelchairs, although the stretch south of Calfclose Bay is the steep bit up to the road, which is currently impassable. The next useable section might be from the car park at Lowcrag Wood, to Lodore Falls, although the last stretch is on the road, and the connecting section towards the gate near Cannon Dub is a rough roadside path on a busy bit of road. From there, it's the MWS 34, which should be good back to Derwent Bay. Hope that helps. If there are other areas that you would like to see, do let us know and we can try and film them another time. All the best
Hope you enjoy. There are a few bits - shown on the film - where the lakeside path is a bit rocky, particularly on the eastern edge of the lake beneath Walla Crag. Will ask on Twitter if anyone has any suggestions or tips and let you know. All the best, Neil
