Extracting Contours from SHP File
มุมมอง 8Kปีที่แล้ว
So you have a SHP file that contains contours. Now you need to import that file into your Civil 3D environment so that you can use the contours to generate a Civil 3D surface. This video walks you through the process of importing the SHP file and getting the elevation data from the imported polylines. I created a much more detailed video which can be found here: th-cam.com/video/g7HW6apnh3g/w-d...

Thank you for the helpful video. I've been using ACAD daily for the past 2 years and did not know this. I use the fillet command mostly to join two different colored polylines together while keeping the source color. For the life of me I can't figure out why in some cases it will actually change my source polyline color instead. Hopefully you can explain that.
The fillet command will use the layer/color of the first polyline you select and the push that the the second line you select. This is, of course, might become an issue when dealing with enclosed areas.
Thank you so much for this. You'd think that attaching elevation would be possible in MAPIMPORT, but nooooo. Thanks again.
I completely agree. That would be nice and too easy.
Thanks for the tutorial, Jason. But i have problems extracting elevation from shp file. I have follow your instruction ,but in the end my cad still shpw zero elevation. Can you help me to solve this issue?
Does the SHP file you have also have supporting files (.dbf, .shx, prj)? Those are where the elevations come from. After you import the files do you see the elevations in the object data (OF) properties in the properties dialog box?
I have to look at this Everytime I need to do it. And I love it every time as the first one haha thank you
Wonderful video. Thank you Jason! Subscribed.
Glad you found it helpful! Thank you.
GREAT VIDEO. THANKS
THANKS alot
You don't need to use the Toolspace to assign the coordinate system, you can do everything in your Map Task Pane. Just right click on the Current drawing in Map Explorer & assign the coordinate system there. You don't have to use 2 different palettes, you only need the Task Pane.
You are correct. I agree. It's a matter of preference.
The video starts at 1:20 Pls save us your life stories. Thanks for the tip
Hey, buddy, I was explaining the past use because some users don't understand why I will show a tool without the content needed. I try very hard to keep any video I make to a minimal. Thanks for watching. Sorry to have wasted a minute and 20 seconds of your time.
Jason, I follow your instructions up to the part where I attach the contour file that is created separately. It attaches per your video but it does not show up at all in the destination file (main working drawing I am attaching it to). Yes, all layers are on. In the define query dialog box, at the bottom it says: "Query source is not available or empty". I cannot get past this point. Any ideas as to why?
I'm so sorry for the late reply here. I've been out of town and no where near my computer. After you import the data, are you saving the drawing as something else? And you're attaching this drawing via the MAP Workspace?
Did not know this. Thanks for the tip.
Glad you found it informative.
This is really informative. Thanks a bunch buddy
Glad you found it helpful.
On the very right of the window there is that vertical menu. How do I get that to show up on my screen?
They should have been there with the install of the software. If they are somehow turned off, you'll need to go into your CUI and turn them back no. Do you know how to do this?
@@j-porter yeah I figured it out…you have to go into the view tab and click civil toolbox
wonderful
The course i paid thousands for didn't teach me this, Thank you
Glad you found it helpful!
Your video is still helping people! Hidden Gem in the Align command to boot! Thanks for a concise explanation!
Thank you! It works better to work with overlays when you have Xref inside Xref that are used in the main layout as Xref too. Thanks for the explanation!
Just tried your tip in AutoCAD LT 2025, It's a little different now. Copy, enter, Mode (0 Zero) enter, Array (A) enter, Number of items, Displacement enter.
Thank you for the update! Much appreciated.
Great tip, thanks for sharing.
thank you, this helped me so much understanding the differences, i have dwgs that reference the same xrefs many times i found it helpful to attach the first set i need in everything, and then overlayed anything else that contained the original xref so i dont have multiple xrefs with the same information inside them
Beneficial, thanks!
great tutorial...👍👍👍 thanks Sir
Good night sir. I have a problem in Infraworks where i imported 3D File from 3ds Max to Infraworks and configurated, Infraworks can not procces it because some error after i entered coordinate X and Y. How can i fix it?
What's the error? I'm not very familiar with 3Ds Max, but maybe we can look up the error.
@@j-portererror File when I opened Infraworks and then I taken 3D Model by Infraworks.
I already have my cuix workspace file used many times, but I can't import anymore I don't know why. Can you help me, please?
How old is it? After some time, I have found these files may age out simply because the coding of the software has evolved. Every 2 or 3 years I rebuild and update my CUI.
I have to put my lines for example on layer 0 then gotta make it block, then move my block into my desired layer. so it can be seen on layout right? when i put block with lines, inside the layer ( grass for example ) then i go inside my block moving again all my lines into Grass layer, it didnt showed on the layout
Sorry for the late reply here. I've been out. I'm unsure what you're attempting to do, but you shouldn't have to go inside you're block and move the lines to the Grass layer. Draw the lines on layer 0, make those lines a block, place the block on the Grass layer, they colors, on, off, freeze, thaw, from there. If the block should move to another layer the color of the lines will absorb the layer's color.
Thanks great video, the only thing I would have added is a custom point marker for the Northing an Easting.
That's a great idea! However, I'm usure how to do that. Please explain to me how.
@@j-porter Create a block of your choice for the Point Marker Style. Name it accordingly for the new marker. Go into point style pick and existing marker save it to a new point style name Select marker in the dialog box select use Autocad BLOCK symbol for marker, find the name of the marker block created, apply and ok. New marker will display for the custom point label style created.
@@cutter3011 Oh, yes! Sorry. I thought you meant a label style. I totally agree with your method. I must add that I rarely create those blocks on layers simply because I place the point marker style on it's own layer. Thanks for the input.
Great
You are a legend, thank you.
Jason, Thank you. This tutorial was exactly what I needed. You're the best!
Sir i followed your instructions but in end when i use insert command it wont work i get a error and my file get closed and restart
Sounds like a corrupt file or software. Did you try it in a new drawing? Are you using the newer software? If so, try the DDINSERT command instead to bring up the old INSERT dialog box. The new one must process a lot, and the more blocks you have in a drawing, then the more it has to process. If none of these work, then try running a repair your software.
@@j-porter sir I am using AutoCAD 2021 crack version and it's totally good not an old or something actually when I type insert I get 2 option with same name 1 is showing error and other is doing the same thing u told but it is not that much useful for me bc it takes time sir i want to know something else in AutoCAD if u can help me and if u know about that it is about plugin I want to add for fast work
@@Mr.kingpatel What is a "crack" version of AutoCAD? Did you try creating this in a new drawing? If it works in a new, blank drawing, then the other drawing may be corrupt. As far as plugins go. . . there are hundreds of plugins out there. Some legit, some not. Just make sure you do some research and verify the company who provides the plugin is legit.
I have a problem with infra works 2022, ground imagery cannot be configured or refreshed, maybe my brother can help him? thanks in advance
Try upgrading your Infraworks. Remember, there really isn't a version of Infraworks. It's a live software that needs to be updated to the latest and greatest to work properly. Even though you may not be using 2025 software, I would still advise to go into your Autodesk account and download the latest version. Whatever you export out of Infraworks should work with any version of Civil 3D.
@@j-porter ok thanks brother, i will try it

sir how to make the orthi(f8) change to right click of mouse?
I'm not sure if you can modify the right-click button. However, if you have a multi-button mouse you can modify the other buttons: help.autodesk.com/view/ACDLT/2023/ENU/?guid=GUID-14CE592B-E8AC-4E9C-BCAE-8AD0F7BA25B5
Thank you, Jason... everything works but "g" for tangent. AutoCAD LT 2020.
This is basically the ONLY thing I do with the mapping tools in C3D. But I always have to check a reference because I do it so infrequently. Thanks for the clear and concise walk-through. Thumbs up and a Subscribe for your efforts. Cheers.
i think new recap2024 no longer have this.
When can we use New layer VP & New layer? What the difference between them
There is no "new layer vp". However there is a "new vp freeze" and "new layer". I'm assuming you're talking about those???? The "new layer" creates a new layer. The "new vp freeze" creates a new layer that will be frozen in any new viewports automatically. You can thaw if needed later. Hope this helps.
@@j-porter Thanks a million
Still coming back to this one!
Mr. Bandas! Glad to see you still know who I am. I hope all is well in your world.
You. Are. A. Genius.
THANKS SO MUCH MAN. SHOR T TO POINT AND PERFECT TITLE..
is there a difference between the .arg file or profile vs the cuix file, workspace file? i have acad lt 2011 at work, and there is no profile tab under options.
The .arg profile controls your settings in your options dialog box (folder preset, display settings, etc.). The CUIX controls your workspace settings (ribbon buttons, toolbars, etc.). It's been awhile, but I believe AutoCAD LT does not have the ability to save a profile (arg).
@@j-porterso do you think acad lt 2011 cuix file will work for acad lt 2022
@@robwinemiller9712 Yes, I've got some CUI's that I've been using for years. With that said, remember, if a button has been added or removed that may not always reflect in the CUI transfer.
@@j-portercool, thanks, starting a new job in may and hoping all my cad stuff transfers ok
@@robwinemiller9712 Good luck to you!
thanks, so why someone would use attach and not overlay?
It's a matter of preference. I prefer to use mostly overlay just to ensure I don't have any circular references. If you're not going to xref the 2nd drawing into a 3rd then attach is just fine.
Im using C3D 2023. When I perform the query to extract the elevation data, there's no window prompt for the Define Query of Attached Drawing. Instead the I'm executing the query on the command line. Do I need to change C3D version?
No, it should work in 2023. Sounds to me like your command dialog boxes may not be appearing. Try typing in CMDDIA at the command line and set the value to 1.
Why it show all points into Grey color.
I don't really know. I just imported them into the software and they came in that way. All I really need from there is to export out the data.
You are a star!
Thank you! Glad it helped.
You seriously saved me MONTHS of headache. Been trying to figure this out on my own for 3 upgrades of AutoCAD so far, always get so frustrated and re-build my work space. THANK YOU!!!!
I'm very happy it helped!!! Thanks for watching.
In the final step I have “block attributes” instead of object data
Is the data in SHP file format? If so, did the SHP file come to you with other files? A full SHP file will be the SHP file along with a PRJ file, an IDX file, a DBF and sometimes an SBN file, an SBX file, or a CPG file. If you don't have the these then the software has a difficult time geolocating the data (using the PRJ file) and providing the object data information (using the DBF file). You can read more about it here: www.autodesk.com/support/technical/article/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Required-files-that-make-up-a-shapefile.html
thank you
