Wow. Head scratcher. My alternative advice. No scouting trips, no transaction trips. Don't ship anything over. Don't sell your house but you may want to sell your car(s) but not quite yet. Turn your house into a BNB so it can earn for you. Keep all your furniture, etc. Don't burn bridges. You might want to return. Move with a suitcase. Many places in Europe are already furnished. Rent one. Don't buy. Now acclimate yourself to the country, take day trips to different parts of the country at different times of year. All you need for the D7 Visa is a one year lease. You can easily get a certificate to teach English. There are countries in the EU who will accept Americans and process the visa for you. There's more than one way to skin a cat. By doing this you are free to leave at any time, have no huge sunken cost and can more effectively find that ideal spot. This isn't a transaction, it's a lifestyle that you're searching for.
Hello! Your channel is very helpful and we've planned a scouting trip for the end of this month. We are retired, live in the US and have questions regarding income tax and health insurance. I think I remember seeing something regarding online consultations with you -- is this something we could schedule?
I find São Martinho do Porto (south of Nazaré) wonderful too.
Why isn’t there a high level summary or something, such a long video
Thank you for your videos, we really appreciate them. We're still aways away, but are already into the planning 🙂 ...a couple of things that we definitely look out for as well are dental services and a local pharmacy. Also, to ensure any medications we require are availalbe and what the local pricing is!
Excellent video, very informative and clear.
Thanks so much for watching!
I hope this message finds you well. As a TH-cam thumbnail designer, I focus on creating visually appealing thumbnails that resonate with your brand. If you're interested, I can design a sample thumbnail for you to assess. Should it meet your standards, we can explore future work together. I’m excited to hear your thoughts!
Love you guys! You are so kind and honest. What about cell phones? Did you get a new one or keep your american one? Thank you!
Thanks for watching! We kept our phones (iPhone 13) and it allows us to keep our US number (if we wanted) as well as add our Portugal number.
U.S. you pay less taxes but health care is much more expensive
Thanks for watching!
I would love to know how you moved the dog. I have a dog that can't fly cargo because she is brachycephalic (Boston Terrier), but is too large to fly in the cabin with me. If I'm missed a video on that, let me know!
Thanks for watching. We were able to put our dog in a crate and have him in the luggage hold on our flight. Best of luck!
So glad I came across your TH-cam channel. I've subscribed for more valuable tips. We are currently living in Upstate New York and dreaming of traveling to Portugal for a scouting trip so this video was incredibly helpful. One important consideration on my "list" is the ease of integrating as an English speaker. Many do not realize that Spanish is not the native language there and, as a foreigner, it's important to embrace learning the language to thrive there. At 66 yo, I am not sure if my brain can make the switch easily so we are looking for an area in Portugal that has a high English language capacity. Certainly larger cities, such as Lisbon, are an option but not sure we want a big city. Braga seems a good option so we have listed this city as an option for our scouting trip but our real wish is to be near the sea. Again...thanks so much for the time and effort in making these videos.
Thanks for watching! One of the surprises for us is how most people here speak English. We are taking Portuguese language lessons and hope to be conversational (we are not yet) but it hasn’t been a problem at all in any area that we have visited. Best of luck on your planning!
If this is covered in your course, please do not give it away here...; any central, or recommended resources for booking hotels or AirB's in Porto or Lisbon? I'm planning on spending a week in each, arriving Feb. 27.
Thanks for watching and, no, we book AirBNB’s in Lisbon and Porto like everyone else, just going to the app, focusing on a part of town that we think we’d like and checking out the prices and pictures :). I hope you enjoy Portugal!!
@@TheUnretirees WIll, do. Thank you so much D&M!
Hi Matt and Dawn. These videos are so helpful; thank you! Around 0:58 Matt says what sounded like "in 2003...we moved abroad ..." have you folks been in Europe for 20+ years, or did you move in 2023?
Thanks for watching….Matt meant to say 2023. That’s when we moved.
@@TheUnretirees Ah, that makes sense, Dawn. So you two are relatively newbs, too. So cool what you doing, and then passing along! ❤
But the NHR is unfortunately discontinued from 1st Jan 2024 if you're just planing to move there now, so the taxation is crazy nowadays
Thanks for watching. You are correct that the old NHR program is no longer in effect for new residents, but everyone’s tax situation is different so it’s worthwhile talking with a pro who knows Portugal and US taxes. Also, a new program was recently introduced providing new residents with favorable tax terms if they meet certain requirements if their income is from a set of professional categories. The new program is called the IFICI. Again, worth talking with a pro.
@ thank you, I would research this topic
We just put our down payment with a relocation company. Mostly because we're late 40s, got 2 kids, pets, and little time to do a scouting trip since we're targeting August 2025 to land.
Thanks for watching and using a relo service can be a great alternative. These next seven months will go by quickly!!
We just purchased a vacation rental home on Madeira Island, and even though we don't plan on living in that house we are seriously considering becoming tax residents of Portugal by next year. We have 3 kids in school, and two widowed mothers so this would be a big deal to move. The house purchase process was long and stressful to manage from the US, but it ultimately worked out and I was on Madeira in December to finish the process and start to set up the house as a vacation rental.
Thanks for watching and congratulations! Madeira is awesome, whether just to vacation there or to move!
@@TheUnretirees I've only spent a day on the silver coast, what decided it for you compared to Madeira?
I follow your channel and watch your videos frequently, not because I want to move to Portugal, in fact I moved from Brazil to the USA, but because I want to learn from your venture on TH-cam. I would like to know if you hired a company to structure the course or if you did everything yourself, in which case which program did you use? Also, do you edit your own videos? Thanks for the great quality content.
Thanks for watching. We write, film and edit our videos ourselves and the course is on a platform called Kajabi to deliver it. I hope that helps!
As a Portuguese-Canadian, I am happy to know that all has come together for you in 🇵🇹. May your retirement be pleasant and meet your expectations.
Thank you so much!
Thanks, very helpful for us. We are planning on making the move in about 3 years and we’re starting to do our homework now. One small observation on your pronunciation of Nazare, the third syllable is not “ray”. It’s reh. It sounds painfully gringo when you stretch out the last syllable. Besides that, you guys rock!
Thanks for watching and for the tip.
I know someone who is from Texas that moved to Northern California that mentioned "it's not home". So, moving abroad, " can u make it home".
Thanks for watching and there’s an aspect of “home” that for most people is about where they are from. I (Matt) grew up near Detroit but haven’t lived there since graduating college, but there is an element of “home” that it has that isn’t filled with anyplace else. But every place I’ve lived since had a sense of home to it anyway with friends made and family relationships growing. It’s a different kind of home that the home you grew up in … but it’s still good - at least it has been for me!
Hello Matt and Dawn, thanks for the informative video again. Can't wait to visit Silver Coast (Coimbra, Leiria and Lisbon area) this coming week from Phoenix! Loved your video.
Thanks so much for watching! You’ll get to experience our winter, which isn’t bad but probably a little cooler than Phoenix. We were just in Lisbon this past weekend and we love going to Coimbra. Leiria is the city closest to us and it seems that we’re there on errands, lol. We need to sightsee there - the castle in Leiria looks very cool. Enjoy your travels!
Would you be able to make video about difference between moving to Portugal verses Mexico?
Thanks for watching. We didn’t consider Mexico so we wouldn’t really be in a position to do a comparison. Thanks!
@@TheUnretirees Thank you. I have emailed you yesterday. Please reply as per your convenience.
Please make a video of your house tour.
Thanks and we’re considering it.
Another fantastic, informative video thanks to Matt and Dawn! We visited Portugal (including Nazaré) in 2022, fell in love, and look forward to a scouting trip this spring or fall. The lessons learned and tips for success will be invaluable as we move forward. Muito obrigada!
Obrigado!!
good, a timely go over for the new year. i have a notebook & have been taking all kinds of notes in prep for my life changing adventure. i just moved from a pretty large city-albany, ny to a rural town an hour west. i love exploring & love, love the back roads. it took a bit of time, but i know or am really familiar with the alternative routes to all my important places. i cannot wait to explore the back roads of portugal. i hope i get the hang of the new traffic rules quickly. i would love to purchase a 60's vw bug. i didn't get my license until i was 56 years old in 2007. i have a couple cars i would love to drive from my 70's teenage years.
Thanks for watching and good luck on your next adventure! Driving in Portugal is really similar to the states once you get used to the roundabouts. Backroads here are really great!
Are the Portuguese still welcoming of foreign tourists and immigrants? I've heard conflicting stories, but several that have said they want foreigners to leave and are less and less welcoming of visitors in general. Is this true? I've heard the same thing about other countries across southern Europe. Just tired of all the congestion and the effects of tourists and immigrants on housing costs and cost of living in general.
Thanks for watching and while we can’t speak for everyone, we have had no personal experience of people being anything other than welcoming.
Hi, thanks a lot it’s really informative. We are looking for a property in between Ericeria and Penice in this price range. A Bit outside of a village but not isolated. So if you know something pls contact me because I’m looking on idealista but without real success Thanks Ralph
Thanks for watching. We’re not as familiar with that area but we do know a relocation company who could be helpful to you. If you want us to connect you with them, just drop us a line at hello@theunretirees.com.

Property 3 for me
We loved property 3! Thanks for watching!
When you mentioned the 34 inches of rain annually at the north Silver Coast as a negative, I was inspired to look up the annual average rainfall for my current location in Knoxville, TN. It ranges from 48-51 inches, approximately. I don’t feel annoyed by this amount of rain, so 34 inches wouldn’t seem like too much for me. I formerly lived in California and got tired of how dry that state can be.
Thanks for watching! The rain isn’t bad, but it all comes in a 3-4 month period. This year, though, it’s been below average rain where we live - more sunny days!!
Adorei o video!

Your car rental fees seem excessive. I am finding them at $9-$20 a day. Why is there such a difference from what you paid?
Probably because we needed a larger vehicle because we were buying furniture to furnish the properties. Thanks for watching!
Excellent video Thank you
Thanks for watching!!

I was hoping for specifics. This was kinda vague. Just pay people, get our course….
One thing that is curious to me is that I understand that you should enter the country using your new visa to activate it. Which Matt did but Donna was already in country, so perhaps should have left and then returned again. Thanks for the informative videos.
Thanks for watching and, yes, you’re probably right that Dawn should have left and then returned, but it wasn’t a problem for us. I imagine someone may have an experience where it didn’t work out, but it worked out fine for us.
@ glad to hear that. So many land mines in the process.
Hi, guys and Happy New Year. You can't use your american express miles for travel around here but you can use a Portuguese Card called Unibanco for that and use that milleage using TAP as your prefered airline in Europe and overseas.
Thanks for watching and thanks for the info. We’ll have to check into Unibanco and TAP’s programs!
Wow 78 days?!?!? You've got MY attention 👀
Thanks for watching and we feel so fortunate!!
Thanks for coming here and just make our life a nightmare. You guys are one of the causes for the high house costs. The first mistake you guys did was deciding coming here.
We are thrilled to be here. We understand that not everyone agrees with the Portuguese government’s decisions over the past 12 years to create clear and attractive pathways for non-Portuguese people to move here legally. Thanks for watching.
@ of course you are 😂

One question however regarding Italy which was also on your initial list of places to live. If an American does not have ancestral ties to Italy can they buy property to live in or do they have to only rent? I love Europe but have spent most of my time in Italy. Take care all.
Thanks for watching and we believe that non citizens without ancestral ties can buy in Italy without issue.
Well I appreciate all of your videos they are very useful but for me I will have to say God bless America and here is where I stay. 🙂 For all of that cost to move I can probably do okay right where I'm at.
lol and thanks for watching. We love the USA but we also love living in Portugal!
Awesome video, I recently just moved to Portugal and I totally agree with all 4 things you mentioned, especially hiring experts/professionals.
Thanks for watching and welcome to Portugal!!
What would you add to this list?
Hi Dawn and Matt. Very helpful; I'd only rent or commit after physically seeing the place. Great sketch of the possibilities. Thank you!
Thanks for watching and we agree that we’d not rent a place without seeing it. Many people do, though, and it often works out (not all the time)
@@TheUnretirees 👍
Hi Dawn and Matt! This is excellent in getting into broad-strokeBa$ics with data. Thank you so much! One thing that would be interesting for your audience, perhaps, is what is the combined US and Portugal income tax on passive or investment income generated with US assets, while living as a resident in Portugal?
Thanks for watching and we try not to get too in the weeds on taxes because there is so much we don’t understand and we’re not tax experts. Every person’s situation can be very different, and even on passive income it’s different for rents vs dividends vs pensions vs social security. It’s worth it to have a consultation call with a tax pro who can help explain all the tax scenarios that could come into play. Thanks!
@@TheUnretirees Thanks for your time in response; makes perfect sense.
Great to learn what this coastal are is, and is called! Depending on construction quality as regards noise and shared walls, ceiling and floors, I'd probably stay away from Condos, as I would in the US. I'm assuming there is some kind of "HOA" type monthly fee, too? I'd be curious to see what spending a bit more, say $300K in €'s might buy for more interior space and nicer interior appointmentsRenovations, in a stand alone property? What are the broad property tax costs?
Thanks for watching. There are some shared costs in a condo but generally not a structured HOA like we had seen in the U.S. in terms of property taxes, we pay less than 10% in property taxes here than a similarly priced home in Connecticut…about 0.2% per year.
@@TheUnretirees Thanks for you time in response! This is helpful to know.
@@TheUnretirees Can €300K get one substantially more modern interior renovations in a stand alone home? Thanks!
