Mike from Nature's Neighbor performs live at Michi No Tochu Cafe & Gallery in Sonobe-cho, Nantan-shi, Kyoto on December 15th 2024.
~
Wow, what a way to cap off the year. This was the best show I’ve played not only in Japan, but probably the best show of my career as a singer songwriter (if you can call it a career).
I’ve been making a lot of new friends around Nantan recently and some of them are local musicians. Ever since moving to Nantan, I’ve been on the lookout for people who make music and people who own and run music venues so that I could get into the local scene. I got really lucky with meeting the owner of DAVADA in Kyoto city during my first year living here, but I had always wanted to find out a way to play at some more local venues in the town I actually live in.
I was never able to make it happen until last month when my partner and I befriended the owner of a local cafe & gallery called Michi no Tochu, a beautiful spot in the more rural side of Sonobe that the owners converted from a very old mountainside akiya house into a cozy place to eat, drink, talk and make friends. They also put on live shows there once a month. The owners invited us to a BBQ party at a beautiful house owned by a Japanese woman from Kyotango and her Canadian husband who were currently in the middle of renovating.
As we sat around drinking beer and eating maple syrup glazed burgers, a Japanese guy with a really pretty Gibson SJ-200 acoustic guitar walked up to me and started talking to me about The Beatles. He didn’t speak any English, but his knowledge of The Beatles was incredibly impressive. He knew it all. We sat around talking about music until he asked me if I had also brought my guitar, to which I said yes and went and grabbed it out of my car and we started jamming classic Beatles tunes.
Apparently this guy was also really good friends with the owner of Michi no Tochu and after a rendition of Blackbird, the two of them started talking about how it would be fun for us to do a Beatles night at his cafe sometime before the end of the year. I said I’d love to do it, and maybe a month later the owner of the cafe reached out to me through instagram offering me a show at his place on December 15th. We then had a meeting at his place where the musician from the BBQ party, Takao-san also showed up with a younger friend who was also a musician named Yoshi-kun. We then decided that the event would be a Beatles theme. Takao-san and Yoshi-kun would open the show doing Beatles covers and then I’d get 45 minutes to play my own solo material and any other songs I wanted. Then after that the three of us would sing some Beatles songs to close out the night.
I practiced my ass off for the next two weeks until the day of the show finally arrived. The place filled up with people rather quickly and by the time I want on stage the crowd was in a great relaxed mood. I fed off of their energy and did my best to give them a great show. I tried to speak a lot in between songs, as I’ve noticed that Japanese crowds in small intimate shows like this really appreciate good spirited stage banter and background information to the songs being played. I didn’t bother making subtitles for this video because my Japanese is trash anyway, but I think I was able to get my ideas and stories across in a very crude yet hopefully charmingly self deprecating manner.
I really have to thank the owners of Michi no Tochu as well as Takao-san for providing me with the opportunity to share my music with the local people of Sonobe and for putting their trust in me to put on a good show even though we had only just barely met. Situations like these that arise out of organically formed relationships within the local community are what I live for and this show was truly a special moment that I will remember for the rest of my life.
So here it is in full, my live set at Michi no Tochu, and my last video for 2024. Happy Holiday’s everyone. See you next year for more moments like this.

Nature's Neighbor - "Song For Bella" (original song)
มุมมอง 114หลายเดือนก่อน
Mike from Nature’s Neighbor performs “Song For Bella” from their 2023 LP The Glass Album. This song is about my first pet. Her name was Bella and she was a pure bred German Shepherd. We bought her when I was 13 years old and she passed away when I was 25 after suffering from a hereditary disease that caused her to lose control of her hind legs. Before she fell ill, she was such a strong, energe...

Mike from Nature’s Neighbor performs ‘Don’t Let it Bring You Down’ from Neil Young’s legendary 1970 album After The Gold Rush. What can I say about Neil Young other than he’s the fucking man? nice nice nice nice very nice bro
TH-cam's auto translate helped out a lot so you don't have to worry about adding subtitles but it's cool hearing the story of how you got there! it was nice hearing you play the piano and everything, awesome show!
Oh wow... I can't even begin what the TH-cam auto translate AI came up with when trying to create subtitles out of my garbled, barely intelligible Japanese... 😅 But hey, I'm so glad you came to watch the concert video! Thank you. I know it won't be one of my most popular uploads, but I'm incredibly proud of it!
Beautiful. Full send.
Big up from korea!
WOLF Rains. Congratulation for this song man
My daughter was born to this song 13 years ago.Thank you for this beautiful cover.
Get those damn onions outta here! (beautiful my friend)
wow, what an experience.
You have a great sensible and emotional voice. Steve Conte is such an amazing singer but on this song you are on his lelel. Beautiful!
Magnificent performance, mate! Even without the rough voice of Steve Conte, you perfectly captured the languishing essence of this song! Wonderful, clean voice you have, all my respect!
So good bro
The Voice to match The Vision. Top effort! Anyone's interpretation/understanding of, "no black and white in the blue..." lyrics? Is it like to go beyond duality or something philosophical? "Life is like a dream (is collapsing) y'know....I'm ascending (to go even beyond a SSJ....over 9000!!)" See ya' later Space Cowboy~
Thanks for the kind words! For me, the "no black and white in the blue" line is about the complexity of emotion. People often use the word 'blue" to describe feelings of melancholy or sadness, but for me and I think for the original lyricist as well, "blue" is so much more multifaceted and complex than simply a word used to describe "feeling down." The word "blue" is used so many times in the song to hint at something indescribable... "There's something 'bout blue" or "Things have turned a deeper shade of blue" The blue sky can represent endlessness... A realm of infinite possibilities just beyond our grasp. I think this song is about grasping for something beyond our reach. Transcendence, if you will... Man, the more I think about this the more complicated it becomes! It's hard to sum up. I think that's the mark of the song's lyrical brilliance. Cheers!
@@natures_neighbor Agree and resonate with your interpretation of blue to eternity from the context of the scenes in Bebop where Real Folk Blues plays as Spike witnesses Julia's death while Blue is playing for his own death and or transcendence if you will (and hopeful reunion with all that is /those dear to him)... Remember Spike told his comrades how in one eye he sees the past and the other the future - but what about living fully present in the moment? Blue is liberation - clear blue sky - boundless limitless light~
@@natures_neighbor p.s. where's your Patreon? and/or equivalent - hope it gathers momentum sooner rather than later~

I’m glad you made it here. Welcome! I’m a huge Wilco fan myself.

good job man!
I'm really sorry for your loss and she sounded like a really special dog. I had to go through a similar experience in college and I never got to see my dog put to sleep either. Also it's a beautiful song and a great tribute to your dog...as always I love the unique sceneries!
Unfortunately the moments leading up to when the life leaves them is a memory that sticks I have found. Love the song.
You have an amazing voice
Thank you for saying so.
I wasn't expecting to be tearing up this Friday morning, but an incredibly relatable song. Don't beat yourself up too badly, its a very hard thing to be in the room for, especially when its a family pet that has that much personality.

Nice cover ! :)
Ho, a cover of one of the best song of all time ! Nice ! :)

THIS IS SO PEAKKKK!! I love your take on it dude! Are you at all willing to share the tabs/chords? I've been trying to learn this song for a minute but I can't seem to lock down the shapes!
Really enjoyed your content this year, including the life updates! I started this year with January Again and actually prefer your Sufjan Stevens covers to the originals. If you have not already, you should really check out The Antlers, particularly their Hospice album. To 1k and beyond!
Thanks for hanging and watching my stuff this year! I'm honored to hear you started your year off with one of my songs. You know it's funny, a close friend of mine just told me that I should listen to Hospice... So I better get on that. Thanks for the recommendation! Stick around!
Good seeing you get appreciated by the local crowd as well. Community matters for these things. Keep it up! I'm sure there will be many more articles and collaborations in the future.
Thanks a lot! Yeah, recently I've really been trying to make more connections in the local community and see where they lead. It feels like I'm on the cusp of making some interesting things happen. Promise to share them all here with you guys as they unfold! Cheers!
congrats on making it in the paper! I'm sure you'll make it to 1K soon but just keep making videos whenever you feel like it or are inspired like you said. it'll be cool to see you collaborate with other people too!

Stunning cover of such a great song! This happily goes onto the playlist next to Steve's version. It's nice to see you are a genuine fan who loves this OST too, it's really some of Yoko Kanno's best work!
Good to find another person as passionate about the music of Wolf’s Rain 😊
I'm really into your Wolf's Rain covers, just found the channel and binge watching them all now. It's truly an amazing anime OST which I've reguarly obsessed with for years. You've been nailing every song. The only thing missing is some Raj Ramayya covers would enjoy to hear your take on covering Strangers. Maybe you could venture into songs from the Made In Abyss OST as well another classic which I feel is spiritually connected to Yoko Kannos work.
Thanks so much for your comment! I’m glad you are digging my videos. And that’s actually a really good idea to try covering Made in Abyss songs. I just finished rewatching that series again so it’s fresh in my mind. Also, I totally plan on covering “Strangers” 👍
