'嵐の前の静けさ' (Calm Before the Storm) Final Fantasy X OST cover

Mike Walker from Nature’s Neighbor performs his cover of ‘嵐の前の静けさ (Calm Before the Storm)’ from the legendary OST of the world renowned video game Final Fantasy X.
Final Fantasy games (especially VII, IX & X) were a huge part of my high school years. I obsessed over those games and completely fell in love with the story, gameplay and most of all, the gorgeous OSTs created by the legendary composer Nobuo Uematsu. Mr. Uematsu is a hero of mine and I have enjoyed his music for more than half of my life.
Of all the OSTs, FFX’s soundtrack is the one that I hold most dear to my heart. That OST has the most calming and beautiful melodies and synth textures that I can sit and listen to for hours on end. I often look up 10 hour versions of songs like ‘Wandering Flame’ and just let them play in the background when I need to focus on something.
When I was a senior in college, I figured out a way to tune my guitar so that I’d be able to play ‘Calm Before the Storm’ all by myself. I spent hours working out my own arrangement of the song until I could play all the melodies in succession and have them flow together seamlessly. It’s one of my favorite instrumental pieces to perform on guitar and I’m very proud of my arrangement. A fun fact about that guitar tuning I made (E B E F# B F# ) is that, although I originally conceived of it to allow me to play this instrumental FFX piece, I would go on to write many original Nature’s Neighbor songs using this same tuning. Many of these songs are some of the best compositions I’ve ever created, and if it were not for FFX, I would have never written them at all.
So thank you FFX, thank you Mr. Uematsu and the two other composers that worked on the OST. Thank you for providing me with endless inspiration and for helping me find my own songs through yours.
