Pre-trip, Boat Safety Check

What do you do to pre-trip your boat?
In this video, you'll see a few different safety devices being checked for function during part of my pre-trip process. I also check oil levels, bilge area and bilge pumps, battery levels, water pressure, engine operating temps, navigational lights, both VHF radios, horn function, safety gear and fire extinguishers and overall function of all systems.
This 10-15 minute check may be mundane but, it's the best opportunity to spot an issue BEFORE you're out on the water. In my case, the boat is used commercially in a passenger-for-hire operation making the pre-trip process even more important both from a safety standpoint and legal standpoint.
You don't generally see me wearing the emergency engine stop lanyard. Because I'm frequently moving about the vessel, staying tethered isn't a good option. However, if I'm on the ocean alone, I'll hook it up!
I choose to use the Fell Marine Man Over Board, wireless kill switch. Not only can the vessel be shut down remotely, but it also has a programed proximity setting meaning, if I leave the boat with that attached, it will automatically shut the vessel down. Likewise, if the Fob gets too far away from the boat or if the battery dies, this will also trigger a shut down.
The dead battery in the wireless kill switch shutting down the vessel is a bit of a problem, especially when underway. However, the vessel can be immediately re-started and the wireless MOB bypassed. This issue is my own fault because there is an App for this wireless
system with among otjrt useful data, let's me know the battery level of all 3 wireless FOBs being used. This device also works as a security system and can "lock out" our engines from being started.
Overall, the ‪@fellmarine6885‬ wireless system still gets my 10/10 endoresemt as a kill switch (whether tethered or wireless) is always being used while the engines are running.
